Previously...
(Natalie's POV)

"I'm just going to slip off real quickly and use the bathroom." I informed them, gesturing to the tree line. I wasn't looking forward to having to squat, but when you've got to go, you've got to go.

"Alright, but be quick, Darlin'." Jasper sighed, releasing me from his grasp.

I made my way over to the tree line, continuing on a little ways in until I found the perfect spot to squat. I moved as quickly as I could before pulling up my jeans and zipping up.

The sound of a twig snapping from my left caused me to jump, whipping my head in the direction of the sound. I didn't see anything at first as I squinted into the darkness, my heart rate speeding up with anxiety and fear.

I heard it before I saw it as a low growl began to sound from above the direction that I was looking in. I swallowed thickly, afraid to look up to see what I'd find, yet I knew I had to.

Tilting my head, I looked up and sucked in a breath as I stared into the hungry eyes of a large mountain lion.

Shit…

Chapter 29: New Developments
(Natalie's POV)

I stood there frozen, unable to move, run, or even cry for help. My eyes stayed glued on the giant cat as it stalked me from the rocks above. It lowered it's body as it put it's weight on it's haunches, preparing to strike as a low growl rumbled in it's chest. I felt the fear rocket through me and I could only pray that Jasper felt it and would come for me before the mountain lion could finish me off.

Just then, the large cat pushed off it's back legs and pounced. I automatically curled into myself where I stood, tucking my body forward with my hands over my head as if to protect my most vulnerable access point for the cat to strike.

Seconds passed, and, yet, I felt nothing. No giant claws ripping at my flesh. No sharp teeth biting into me. Nothing.

I hesitantly peeked up and jumped when I saw that the mountain lion was still present. However, that was not was shocked me. All around me was sparkling, shimmering almost as I remained encased in what appeared to be a glittering bubble.

I watched as the large cat scaled the outside, trying to find a way inside as it leaned it's front paws on the bubble, but to no avail. It was almost like a shimmering force-field was protecting me from a horrific ending with the mountain lion.

"Natalie!" I heard my name called from my left and whipped my head in the direction, spotting Jasper's wide-eyed stare.

The second the cat spotted him, it hissed and took off in the opposite direction. It was then that I recalled Jasper telling them that animals instinctively shy away from them, and came to the conclusion that the mountain lion was scared off by him.

Once the large cat was out of sight, I flickered my stare back over towards Jasper and saw that the rest of the group had joined him. Their eyes were wide as the gawked at me, still encased inside of my protective bubble.

"Well, hot damn! It seems that Lil Bit, here, has a shield." Peter grinned.

"But as a human?" Rose asked, coming as close as a vampire could to stuttering.

"Sure does look like it," Peter confirmed, crossing his arms over his chest with a look akin to pride on his face.

I was still shaken up and in shock over what had occurred only moments ago, that all of this just didn't seem to register in my human brain. I could only manage to stand there and stare at everyone in silence, confusion pouring from me.

"I can't feel her from inside of there," Jasper stated dryly, obviously not liking that fact. "Alice?" He asked without taking his eyes from me.

She shook her head, her eyes blank. "I see nothing. I can see everyone else around her, but not her. It's like she's a blank spot."

Jasper didn't respond to her as he slowly began to make his way down the small embankment and stopped just outside of my bubble, shield…whatever it was. He reached up and placed his hand on the outside as if it were a window to my safe cocoon.

"Solid," he mumbled more to himself, reaching up with his other hand as well and began to press on it, looking like he was testing it for weaknesses. "Impenetrable."

"Should we call Carlisle to come down here to check her out?" Emmett asked as he made his way down to stand next to his brother, cell phone in hand as he waited for Jasper's okay.

Jasper pursed his lips, shaking his head. "Not yet. If we need him, then we will call him. Wait until we get her out of here and then we'll meet him back at the house to have him check her out to make sure that she's okay."

I was getting irritated that everyone was talking as though I wasn't even here, as if I couldn't hear everything that we being said and didn't have an opinion of my own. However, try as I may, I couldn't seem to make my lips work, and I clenched my hands into fists at my side.

Why wasn't anyone explaining anything to me?

What was I, some freak they all felt they could gawk at and pretend that I'm not a person with her own thoughts and feelings, one of those being fear at what was happening to me. Why didn't anyone care?

"You might want to back away from there, Major," Peter spoke up uneasily.

Jasper's face scrunched up into confusion and he turned to look at Peter before following his gaze over to me. His eyes widened as he looked at me and immediately began to take several steps back.

"What's going on?" Emmett asked with his back to me, entirely focused on Peter and Jasper. "Do I need to get Carlisle on the phone to deal with her?"

Oh no, he didn't…

'Deal with me? What was that supposed to mean?' I thought to myself in anger.

Finally able to force the words from my lips, I gritted my teeth and yelled, "I'm right here!"

Two things seemed to happen simultaneously the second I had screamed. First, the bubble around me expanded outward, cutting right through the trees closest to me. It uprooted them from deep within the soil, revealing their large roots. Second, Emmett was hit with the exterior of the glittering orb and sent flying several yards backwards until he slammed into a large tree that broke in half from the force of Emmett's rock hard body.

"Oh my God, Emmett!" Rosalie gasped and flew to him, helping him from the pile of debris.

All eyes immediately flew to me, their jaws slack in astonishment.

I felt myself begin to sway on my feet, a sharp pain shooting straight up to my head as the world began to dim around me. I dropped to the ground, unable to hold my own weight any longer as everything began to wither into darkness. Jasper's anxious and fearful expression was the last thing that I saw before it all went black and I faded into unconsciousness.

(Jasper's POV)

The second Natalie's eyes shut, her shield disappeared and allowed me to finally get close to my mate. I didn't know what was happening, or how this was even possible for a human to accomplish, but I was going to find out.

I scooped her up into my arms, taking care not to jostle her too much as I held her to my chest protectively. My mate was hurt and vulnerable right now and I would protect her with everything in me; my vampire mating instincts demanded it of me.

I heard Alice gasp, covering her nose and mouth with her hands as her eyes shot down to Natalie. "Jasper, run!"

I looked down and saw that blood had begun trickling from Natalie's nose and muttered a curse.

"Call Carlisle and meet me back at the house!" I hissed at the black-eyed vampires around me before taking off into the trees before someone lost control. In the state that I was in right now, there was no way I would be able to curve their thirsts, as I normally would have.

I flew through the trees in the direction of the mansion, knowing that the rest of them would stop to pick up the cars on their way. I kept Natalie safely against my chest, taking care not to bump her into anything in our path.

It took me less than five minutes before I showed up on the property and immediately spotted Carlisle on the front porch waiting for me. I knew that Esme wouldn't be around, not wanting to risk getting too close to my bleeding mate for both Natalie's safety and her own.

Spotting me with Natalie in my arms, Carlisle flitted down the steps and met me half way to the porch steps.

"Jasper, what happened?" Carlisle asked as he looked her over from his vantage point next to me, knowing that I wouldn't release my mate from my hold unless I had to.

"She has a gift," I answered, still striding purposefully to the front door.

"A gift? What kind of gift? What do you mean?" He quizzed, opening the door for us as I turned sideways and carefully maneuvered Natalie through the doorway before heading for the stairs to head up to Carlisle's office.

"It's a shield of some kind," I responded. "She went off into the wood by herself for a moment. A mountain lion was hunting her and it manifested itself in order to protect her. I didn't see how it happened. All I felt was a mass amount of fear and panic one second before it all disappeared. When I arrived, I saw the mountain lion just before it ran off and she was surrounded by a globe of some kind." I finished as I rounded the corner at the top of the steps before making my way down the rest of the hall way and into his open office.

"And she just collapsed?" Carlisle assumed questioningly.

I shook my head as I gently laid her down on the small couch off to the side of Carlisle's desk. He appeared next to me with a handkerchief and tilted Natalie's head back before pressing the fabric to her nostrils.

"Everyone else showed up and we began to talk about her and her shield. She didn't like that we were speaking as though she wasn't there and got mad. Peter warned me to back away and when I saw why, I began to get back. She had her hands clenched at her sides and her eyes were bright red. This… energy…began to flow from her shield and Emmett said something that sent her over the edge. Her shield sent this sort of shock wave out and it uprooted a bunch of trees and sent Emmett flying into a tree. When I looked back over at her, she started swaying on her feet and she just collapsed."

"Did the shield drop when she blacked out?" He queried.

"Yes," I confirmed, brushing her hair back away from her face.

"Hmm," Carlisle hummed, "We will give her a little while longer to wake up on her own merit. If she doesn't wake up in an hour or two, we're going to take her down to the ER."

"Why not take her now?" Esme appeared in the doorway, obviously not breathing but wanting to check on Natalie all the same.

"Well, this was a supernatural incident. I'd rather not have to take her down there and be questioned. Her injuries aren't life threatening from what I can see so far, but I would like to bring some equipment home from the hospital to do some tests."

I narrowed my eyes quizzically, "Tests?"

He nodded, "Humans don't have these kinds of gifts for a reason. Their bodies aren't built to withstand it. Her nosebleed could just be coincidence or it could mean that something happened or something is wrong. Either way, it needs to be done."

I swallowed thickly and nodded, "Okay."

"I'm going to go down stairs and talk to the others. Stay with her and let me know if you see any changes." Carlisle instructed before exiting his office, wrapping his arm around his mate's waist, and making his way down the stairs and out the front door.

(Natalie's POV)

I didn't remember what happened right away or where I was when I started to come back to myself. I felt something cool wrapped around my right hand and was stroking the back of my palm.

Slowly, my eyes began to flitter open to reveal an office of some sort, which was dimly lit. The pain in my head made me wince, and the light stroking stopped.

"Natalie?" I heard from my side and turned to see Jasper's concerned eyes watching my face carefully for signs of my condition.

"Where am I?" My voice was raspy as I spoke, causing me to clear my throat. "What happened?"

Jasper frowned, "We're in Carlisle's office back at the house." He scooted closer to me and leaned forward intently.

"What do you remember, Natalie?" Carlisle appeared from the doorway behind Jasper, peaking his head inside before coming forward to sit in the other chair.

I closed my eyes, trying to picture the last solid thing I remembered doing before everything went dark. "We were at a field in the woods playing football." I said, opening my eyes to see either of their faces for clues.

His face was blank as he continued to press for more. "What else?"

My eyebrows furrowed in concentration as I continued to think back, everything slowly coming back to me. "I went off into the tree line to pee in the woods before we left, everyone was packing up the equipment." I said, staring blankly ahead of me as I recalled the events. "I was about to head back to everyone when I heard something, a twig snapping, maybe? Well, when I looked up at where the sound had come from, there was this big cat, it looked like a mountain lion."

I paused, biting my bottom lip as my hands idly fidgeted with the blanket that someone had put over me. "I remembered being so scared. It was looking at me with this predatory glare and crouched low on its haunches. I knew it was getting ready to pounce on me."

I took in a deep breath and let it out slowly, unable to control the fear as I relived the events within my mind. I rationally knew that I was safe and had no reason to be afraid, but regardless, I was still afraid.

"It's okay, Darlin'," Jasper's voice brought me into the present as he reached for my hand, causing me to look up at him. "I'm right here and you're safe. Just take deep breaths and continue your story."

I gave him a small appreciative smile and gave his cool hand a small squeeze in thanks. I took another long breath and resumed my tale. "I don't know how it happened. I just remembered being so scared and hoping that you could feel my panic and fear from where you were out in the field." I told Jasper. "But before I could really think or do anything else, the lion got ready to pounce. I curled into myself and tried t o shield my head and stomach, trying to protect myself in any way that I could. But…nothing happened." My brows furrowed as I thought about the glittering bubble that had saved my life.

"Your shield," Jasper speculated before turning to Carlisle. "When I found her, the lion was circling the barrier as if it were looking for a way inside. It ran off the second it saw me."

I couldn't help but to shiver, unable to help but imagine what would have happened if the lion had gotten to me. "I don't know how it happened or why, but it saved me. I felt safe…protected inside of it, as if no one could ever get to me."

Carlisle continued to study me, thoughtfully. "What happened next?"

I felt a blush burn into my cheeks as the next events played in my mind. "Everyone showed up. I guess I was in shock, because I couldn't make myself move or speak. I just stood there, staring. But when everyone started to talk about me like I wasn't even there, like I was some freak who didn't deserve an opinion…I suppose I got a little mad." I ducked my head, unable to meet their eyes.

It was quiet for a couple of seconds and I heard a faint buzzing noise, and I assumed that Carlisle and Jasper were talking at a speed that I couldn't understand or hear with my human ears.

I didn't have much time to think on it as I felt Jasper's hand give mine a squeeze, and I looked up at him questioningly.

"I'm so sorry, Natalie." Jasper spoke with conviction as his remorseful eyes stayed glued to mine. "I guess my instincts kind of got the better of me. I was in shock and you had almost been killed…there's a lot that you still don't know about my kind, and my head just wasn't in the right place. Forgive me?"

My lip twitched as a small smile spread on my lips before I slowly nodded.

"How did you manage to drop your shield, Natalie?" Carlisle asked as he leaned back against his desk, breaking my focus on Jasper.

My brows furrowed and I shrugged, "I don't know." I said. "When I got angry, I felt…something…and it exploded. All I saw was the trees around me started falling, and Emmett - oh my gosh!" I sat up straighter, my eyes wide. "Is he okay?"

A smile pulled at Jasper lips as he nodded, "He's fine, Darlin'. Us vampires are nearly impossible to seriously hurt." He chuckled.

I sighed, sagging back onto the pillow behind me in relief. "All I saw was him flying backwards and slamming into that tree, breaking it in half. After that, my head started to hurt a lot and I got really lightheaded and dizzy before everything around me went dark."

"She just dropped and the second she was out, the barrier disappeared." Jasper finished for me.

"Hmm," Carlisle hummed thoughtfully as he stared at something behind me before dropping his focus back onto me. "Would you mind if we did a few tests?"

I tilted my head in confusion. "Tests?"

"Medical tests," he rephrased. "An MRI, EKG, maybe a Cat-Scan and some blood work?"

"But why?" I pressed, not liking the sound of any of it. "What will any of that tell you?"

Stepping forward to squat down in front of me, Carlisle looked up at me with a mixture of concern and earnest. "Natalie, humans do not have supernatural gifts for a reason. It is too much for their bodies and minds to handle, as well as other reasoning. As soon as this happened, you passed out and your nose started to bleed. I just want to make sure that everything is okay, and that there isn't anything that we should be concerned about."

I swallowed thickly. "And if there is?" I asked, my heart pounding loudly in my chest.

Carlisle turned his head and looked at Jasper, who looked at me as he spoke. "We will cross that bridge if we need to." He answered dismissively, leaning forward slightly to make sure that I was looking him in the eyes. "Just know that no matter what happens, I will never let anything happen to you, ever."

I continued to hold his eyes in mine as I spoke. "Will you change me?" I asked, searching his gaze beseechingly.

He didn't hesitate as he answered. "Without a second thought."

His expression never faltered and his eyes held nothing but honesty. I knew he was being truthful and that he would never let anything hurt me or separate us.

Nodding, I turned my eyes to Carlisle and took in a breath, giving him a single nod. "I'll consent to testing."

Happy with my answer, his body relaxed and he let out the air from his lungs. "Good," he smiled. "We will meet up here at the beginning of the week so I can talk with you and get a brief medial history. Then, we will do the tests throughout the rest of the week at the hospital."

My eyes widened, "I don't want Charlie or Bella to know -"

"No one will see the scans or results but me," he interrupted me, putting my mind at ease. "I will be doing the tests myself off the books, so as far as everyone else is concerned, they never happened. I would have the equipment delivered here to the house, but I'm afraid it will take too long and raise too many red flags."

"I understand," I nodded.

"Okay then," Carlisle nodded, appeased, turning to Jasper. "You should probably get Natalie back home. It's getting late and I'm sure Charlie will be worried." He turned his amber gaze back to me. "Let me know if anything happens before we can meet for the consultation. In the mean time, feel better and take it easy for the next few days." He winked.

A broad smile crossed my face and I nodded, "Thank you, Carlisle."

He patted my shoulder affectionately, "Any time, Natalie." He said before slipping out of his office, closing the door behind him.

We pulled up in front of the house to see that Charlie was already home from the station. Jasper had insisted on driving me home, claiming that it wasn't safe since I'd been unconscious only an hour prior. I didn't argue, allowing him to drive me in the truck, however, getting him to go home was another matter entirely.

"I'll be fine," I insisted. "I'm sure you have better things to do than to watch me sleep all night long."

"No, actually, I don't," he smirked. "Please, don't argue."

Sighing, I relented, mainly out of selfish reasoning, wanting nothing more than to fall asleep in his arms. "Fine, but keep an eye out for Bella. She likes to sneak into my room sometimes."

His smile widened at my acceptance and he nodded, "Don't worry, she won't even know I'm there. Neither of them will." He said, referring to Charlie.

"Good," I grinned, "I've got to get inside. I'll see you in a little bit?"

"Yes, ma'am," Jasper smirked, leaning in to meet me in a deep kiss, his tongue diving into my mouth possessively. I couldn't help the chill that went down my spine at the erotic nature and I scooted myself closer to him so that my body was pressed up tightly against his. Jasper reached up with his other hand and cupped my jaw.

Finally, I couldn't delay the fact that I needed air, and pulled back, breathing heavily. He leaned his forehead against mine, lightly running the backs of his fingers over my cheek.

"You're so amazing." He whispered before pulling back. "Now, get in there before I can't control myself and end up ravishing you." He chuckled, pulling the keys out of the ignition and placing them in my hand.

I laughed as I began scooting back over to the passenger side of the truck and opened the door, climbing out of the cab. "See you later."

Jasper waved, disappearing out of the driver's seat before my eyes, door shut behind him.

Sighing happily, I made my way up the front walk way and over to the front door, opening it up before slipping inside.
