Chapter 28

Going to the chapel and we're gonna to get married

2 weeks later

"You seem sad today, my love," Daniel said while stroking my hair. My head was leaning on his chest and he had wrapped his arms gently around me. There was no place I would have rather been at the moment, his presence made me feel safe and for a brief moment I was allowed to be myself, I didn't have to pretend anything to him. He didn't mock or demand anything from me; he simply loved me and allowed me to love him back. He was perfect in every way, like a saint. I had no idea what I would have done without him.

"Have something happened?" he asked.

"Not really," I muttered. "It's my birthday soon and Klaus wishes to celebrate it."

"Is that a bad thing?"

"No, I suppose not, but…"

I had no idea how to continue, I had felt restless ever since my awkward talk with Klaus. I had a very bad feeling and I just couldn't shake it no matter how hard I tried. He was planning something and I didn't think for a second that it would be anything nice. Bridgette had seemed concerned as well, but she had also seemed absent-minded during the last few days. I suspected that it had something to do with the man she was seeing, who ever he was. She deserved to be happy and I truly hoped that she would be.

"I am afraid," I said quietly.

"Of what?" Daniel asked.

I shook my head and wrapped my arms tighter around him.

"I am not sure; I just feel that something bad is going to happen."

"No," he said firmly and touched my cheek. "Not as long as my heart still beats."

I felt a lump in my throat; I couldn't bear the thought of losing him.

"I wish…I wish we could just leave together, you, me and Bridgette," I murmured. "I would like to build a small home with you and be happy."

That sounded foolish and naïve even in my own ears, but the childish part of me wanted to believe in happy endings. Daniel was quiet for a while and continued stroking my hair.

"We cannot leave, Liliya," he finally said. "Where would we go?"

"I know," I sighed. "It is just my dream."

"I think we should be wed first," he said.

I smiled; he always knew how to cheer me up.

"Yes, in a cathedral in front of the king and the queen and all the lords and ladies in England, the bishop could wed us."

He swallowed.

"I…was thinking more along the line of a cleric."

I froze; it took a moment before I managed to get into a sitting position. He got up as well and took my hands between his owns. We were sitting on a haystack and I heard few horses nickering around us, but all I saw was him. He cleared his throat and looked into my eyes.

"This was not how this was supposed to go…" he muttered. "I…practiced a speech, but I cannot remember a word from it, I am so sorry."

I let out a nervous laughter; my heart was pounding like a drum.

"I love you, Liliya, more than I ever thought would be possible to love anyone and I would do anything for you. I know I am not good enough for you, but it would be my greatest wish to call you my wife."

My eyes were watering up; I had never felt such joy in my life.

"Yes! Yes, I…"

All my joy was gone in a fraction of a second when I remembered Klaus.

"No…"

Daniel looked confused, no wonder.

"I would want that more than anything, but I cannot," I said quietly, swallowing my tears. "Klaus would never allow that…"

"He does," Daniel interrupted me. "I spoke with him."

My eyes widened in surprise.

"You spoke with him?"

Daniel nodded.

"Yes and he promised us his blessing."

I couldn't believe what I was hearing, could this be real?

"Are you…absolutely sure?" I asked cautiously.

"Yes, I would not propose otherwise. He said that this would be his birthday gift for you."

I still couldn't believe it; could Klaus really allow me to get married?

"Was there any conditions?" I asked automatically.

"Only that we must stay here," Daniel replied. "And he promised me a better position so I can take care of our family."

Our family… Fresh tears coursed down my cheeks, I was still afraid to believe this. Gently he wiped my tears away and kissed me.

"Will you make me the happiest man in the world?"

I let out another sob and nodded.

"Yes, my love, I would be honored to be your wife."

There was the biggest smile on his face when he kissed me again and hugged me tightly.

"I love you so much," he muttered and stroked my back.

"I love you too," I replied, enjoying my perfect moment of happiness. A part of me was still afraid that Klaus hadn't meant anything he had said, this could be some sick joke, but right now I wanted to believe that this was really happening.

"Oh, I have…" Daniel started a pulled away. He was still smiling when he took something from his pocket. It was a simple tin ring, but to me it was the most beautiful object I had ever seen.

"It is not much…" he started, but I silenced him by placing my finger on his lips.

"It is perfect," I said and hold out my left hand. He kissed it softly before placing the ring on my finger; it fit perfectly, like it would have been made for me.

"We can be wed on your birthday," he said. "If you wish so."

I nodded and kissed him.

"I cannot wait."

Kol stayed out of sight when Liliya hopped out from the stable, she was practically floating in the air. He had certainly never seen her so happy. Too bad there would never be any wedding, not when the groom would be dead. Did that foolish boy actually think that he could take what belonged to Kol? That would never happen. He had barely managed to control himself during their cute little scene, but now it was the time for the big finale. Apparently his compulsion hadn't been enough, the boy needed to disappear. He was just about to enter the stable when he heard clapping.

"Bravo! That was a wonderful performance," Nik's voice said. "Very touching."

"Thank you, master," the boy muttered.

What…

"You did well," Nik said. "I trust that you will keep up the good work."

"Yes, master."

"Wonderful. You will follow my current orders for now; I will give you new ones before…the big night."

"Yes, master."

"Hmm, it won't be long now…"

Kol zoomed away silently before his brother walked out. What the hell was going on?
