Nightmare Under the Bed: Chapter 2

"Hola,"Isaac and Jackson greeted at the same time as a young woman opened the door to an apartment. Jackson flashed her a friendly smile as he pulled out a pen and scribbled on the clipboard.

"I'm Jensen Martinez and this is Bob Marley. We're part of pest control,"Jackson explained, to the suspicious woman. "And we were given orders to perform routine checkups to ensure that unwanted guests haven't made a home in your home." Jackson smiled a million dollar grin. "We're just making sure nothing dangerous is going on within your walls." Jackson tapped on the wall for emphasis.

"Got pests?"Isaac stated, making up a slogan for their fake business. "We'll waste 'em."

"Pest control?" the woman questioned, opening the door a little further. "What dangers?"

Isaac peaked around the woman, noticing three young children between the ages of seven and four.

"Oh, you know,"Isaac drawled, a smile planted on his face. "Mold. termites. Weird creaks. Flickering lights. Have you noticed any flickering lights?" The woman shook her head, brown eyes wide in concern. Isaac hummed. Jackson glanced over at the taller werewolf, giving a brief nod.

"What does flickering lights and weird creaks have anything to do with pests,"the woman questioned.

"You'd be surprised,"Isaac responded with a woman glanced at him in concern, when she didn't get a straight answer. She scratched at her arm nervously, suddenly getting the itches.

"Well, if you don't mind letting us have a peak around,"Jackson continued. "It would be very helpful. Get the big bosses off our backs if you know what I mean."

"No, I don't,"The woman responded, her nails digging into the door frame. "My husband's not home. If you don't mind waiting-"

"Of course, Ma'am,"Isaac replied, politely. He glanced at his wristwatch, sighing. "But we're on a pretty tight schedule-"The woman bit her lips before requesting to see their qualifications. The wolves showed her their forged badges. The pack had met with a man, who created fake licenses and badges for hunters. He didn't care who he met with as long as he was paid. The woman nodded her head.

"I guess it wouldn't be too much trouble if you stepped in for a minute,"She stated, opening her door fully and stepping aside. Her brows crinkled as she observed the young men at her door. "Aren't you a little young for this job."

Isaac glanced at her, seriously. "Yes. Yes, we are." She stiffened and Isaac smiled, brightly. "Now, Jensen here has a few questions for you. I'm gonna take a peak around make sure everything is working properly. And nothing is living under the floorboards. And so forth." Isaac glanced at Jackson. "Jensen?"

Jackson stepped forward, quickly glancing at the piece of paper. "It's a new government idea,"Jackson explained as Isaac wandered into the kitchen, opening cupboards and sniffing around. Jackson had noticed the woman's hesitance. "Preparing the youth for the working world."The woman nodded, her body less stiff.

"Oh,"she stated. She still seemed suspicious of their age. "What's it called?"

"No Child Left Behind," Jackson responded, inwardly grinning at his sorry excuse for a joke. Hopefully the mother of three didn't pay attention to American politics. "They find it better than schooling. Get those kids experience, they say!" The woman's irritation rose as she readied another question.

"Now,"Jackson continued, an attempt to distract her. "Any creaks? Weird flickering? Strange noises?"The woman raised her brow, shaking her head.

"No,"she responded, crossing her arms. "Not any that I'm aware of-"She glanced over at Isaac, who had wandered down the halls, towards the bedrooms. "What's he doing?"

"Checking for monsters,"Jackson replied, nonchalantly. He noticed the woman's confused look and smiled. I'm just kidding, Mrs..."

"Alcaraz,"she stated, absentmindedly. Her focus solely on Isaac's progression down the halls, as he tapped on the walls, listening for sounds that couldn't be heard by the human ear.

"Pest control,"he reminded as he scribbled on the paper. "He's looking for insects or rodents. You could very well be infested with mice, Mrs. Alcaraz."

"Oh, good heavens,"she exclaimed.

"Now the questions,"Jackson asked.

Isaac stood in a child's bedroom. His eyes searching the toy-filled room as he wandered further in, trying to see if any monsters had made their homes under the bed. Dakarai had been talking to a man, Fernando Alcaraz, down at his new job the previous day. Fernando had told Dakarai about his current sleep deprivation, the last few weeks. His children had been waking up in the middle of the night, screaming about monsters. Similar to what had happened to Essy and Diego, a couple of nights before. Jackson and him had decided to pay the family a visit and get some answers.

Nora, Lilith, and Mara were back at the house, researching different folklore, while Cora and Dakarai had proceeded to collect information from other families who haven't been able to sleep because of their kids' screams of terror. The group had discovered they were right in the middle of the monster's hunting ground. Each house attacked was a few blocks away from the motel.

Isaac paused, noticing fur trapped in the floorboard under one of the beds. He knelt down, pulling tweezers out of his pocket. He plucked the fur, sniffing it. No scent. He crossed his eyebrows.

"What the hell?"he muttered, pulling out a little baggy and placing the evidence in the plastic bag.

"Who are you?"a little voice asked, interrupting the investigation. He turned swiftly, coming eye to eye with three curious kids. The oldest girl stood tall, hands on her hips, and a reprimanding glare in her dark eyes. She, obviously, was the one who asked the question. Since the other two looked about five and four. "I don't think you're supposed to be in here?"The girl looked drowsy and pale, which weren't good signs. He needed to find out if this was the doing of the monster.

Isaac grinned, charmingly. "I'm not?"Isaac replied. "But, I have to do my job. I'm part of pest control. Just checking for mice." Isaac paused, quirking his head to the side. "What's your name?"

"Isabella,"She replied, haughtily. "And I don't believe you." She wagged her finger. Her lips parted, revealing the gap in her mouth.

"Why not?"he questioned. He had learned long ago that children had amazing intuition and tended to see things that adults failed to notice.

"Because you dress and talk weird,"She replied. "And you're obviously lying." Isaac raised a brow.

"How did you-"

"Because you're about to tell us the monster under my bed is real,"She revealed. Isaac snapped his mouth shut, shocked, and unable to form words. "I saw you yesterday." Isaac scooted closer, eying the young girl.

"But I wasn't here yesterday,"Isaac replied. The girl rolled her eyes.

"Of course not silly,"She stated. "I saw you in a dream." Isaac leaned back.

"Isabella,"he questioned. "Do you have visions often?" The seven-year-old shrugged.

"Sometimes,"she muttered. "I always get a headache and really sleepy when it happens." Isaac nodded.

"Isabella always knows when something's about to happen,"the five-year old boy interrupted. The four-year old girl bobbed in agreement.

Isaac sighed, scratching the back of his head. His gaze focused on the three kids. "The monster under your bed is real,"Isaac stated.

"And you're here to stop it?"Isabella asked. Isaac replied, affirmatively. "How?"

"I hunt monsters,"he explained. "My friends and I, we stop beasts from hurting the innocent. And that's what we plan to do here."

"But you're a monster too,"the girl replied, confused. "Your eyes glow and you have-" She made a growling noise, baring her teeth. Isaac chuckled, staring at the young girl. Who was she? What was she? Obviously some sort of psychic. Possibly a young oracle who was just starting to develop her abilities. First the pups, now this girl. He'd have to hear back from Dakarai and Cora, but he was sure there was a pattern.

"I'm one of the good monsters,"Isaac reassured her.

"Oh."

"Now, do you mind telling me what it looked like?"Isaac asked. The girl agreed as the two younger ones huddled close.

"It was furry,"the girl explained. "Gray fur."Her finger pointed towards the baggy. "Like the one you placed in the bag. Sharp teeth and claws." She shivered and the younger ones whimpered. "But, it doesn't stay the same."

"What do you-"Isaac began to ask, but Mrs. Alcaraz's shrill voice broke his question as she came stomping into the room, pointing an accusatory finger. She pulled her children close to her side, Isabella protesting.

"What are you doing in here?!"she demanded. Isaac put his hands up, slowly standing to his feet.

"Sorry, Ma'am, I was just checking-"

"I think it's time for you to leave,"she stated. Isaac nodded, heading over to Jackson who waved him out the door.

"Have a nice day,"Isaac started, but the door was slammed in his face. Isaac looked over at Jackson and the shorter werewolf shrugged, before making his way down the hall. Isaac quickly followed.

"What happened?"Isaac asked.

"She didn't believe my bullshit, that's what happened,"Jackson responded with a huff. "She didn't know much anyways."

The two quickly took the stairs, pushing the door open at the bottom, and exited out on the street, avoiding the people milling about. They stepped around crowds, avoiding bicyclists. They crossed the street as automobiles beeped their horns and angry taxi drivers yelled profanity out the window.

"What about you?"Jackson asked, shooting a glance at his friend. "Did you find anything?" Isaac grinned, pulling the baggy out of his trench coat pocket.

"Actually, I did,"Isaac stated. Jackson took the baggy, scrutinizing the lone strand of hair. He raised a brow.

"Cat hair?"Jackson questioned. Isaac rolled his eyes, taking the baggy from his hand.

"No,"he huffed, pocketing the evidence once more. "It came from the monster." Jackson smirked. A woman bumped him, quickly apologizing as she made her way down the street. Jackson looked back, watching her retreating form with a smile. "I also had an interesting conversation with the seven year old."

Jackson's eyes shot back up to Isaac's. "What do you mean?"

"I mean, she knew we were coming, before we knew we were coming,"Isaac responded with a frown. "I think she might be an oracle." Isaac paused, his train of thought racing down the tracks. "A young one, but-"Isaac scratched the back of his head, pursing his lips. "There has to be a connection."

"Alright, Sherlock, settle down,"Jackson quipped. "Don't give yourself an aneurysm." They paused at a crosswalk, watching cars pass by and businessmen talked on their cellphones. "What's your hypothesis?"Jackson asked.

"I think there's a connection between supernatural kids,"Isaac stated. "I'd like to hear what Cora and Dakarai found out. But it's no coincidence that this thing spooked the pups as well as this oracle girl."

Jackson nodded, scratching his chin. "But it still could be,"Jackson debated, watching his friend. "We really don't know how many supernatural beings are out there."

"I guess,"Isaac replied, but he was going to keep hold of his hypothesis until proven wrong. "Hey, did Essy and Diego describe the monster?"

"I don't think so,"Jackson said. "Why?"

"The girl said the monster was furry with fangs,"Isaac answered. "I want to know what Diego and Essy saw?" He pulled out his cellphone, calling Nora. He let the girls know he and Jackson were coming up before pocketing his phone. Jackson pulled out the motel keys.

"Hi, lads!"Lilith greeted, skipping over and pulling them into a hug. She grinned gigantically, her red curls bouncing. Her turned-up nose crinkled because of her extended smile. She fluttered backwards, her hands behind her back.

" 'sup,"was Nora's simple greeting. Mara didn't respond, busy flipping through books. Nora sat cross-legged on the couch as she searched the internet, saving documents and asking questions to supposed experts. The pups dropped their toys and in a flurry of motion, leapt at the two older wolves. Essy buried her head into Isaac's neck, while Diego proceeded to use Jackson like a jungle gym.

"Hey," Isaac replied, stepping into the room with Jackson following. "Did you find anything?"

Mara glanced up, shrugging. "We looked in the bestiary, but there were no accounts of the monster that Diego and Essy saw." Isaac raised a brow, glancing at the small girl. She nosed his neck, eyes flashing nervously.

"They told you what it looked like?"he asked, rhetorically, as he chewed on his bottom lip in concentration. He pulled out the small baggy, showing the pups the strand he found. "Did it have gray fur?"he questioned. Both pups shook their heads.

"No,"Diego whimpered as he played with Jackson's face. Jackson made a silly face and both pups giggled. Isaac's brows furrowed in confusion.

"I'm guessing you found something," Mara interrupted, getting up from her seat from the table. She made her way over to the two wolves and took the baggy from Isaac.

"Yeah,"Isaac replied. "I talked to a little girl and she told me the monster was covered in fur and had fangs."

"That's not our monster,"Essy chimed in. "Ours was green and scaly." She growled, extending her claws. An attempt to make herself look intimidating. Isaac brushed back her dark locks, looking her in the eyes.

"Really?"he asked. "What else?" The little pup, tapped on her chin. This description was completely different from Isabella's. They might be dealing with multiple monsters.

"Fire,"Diego murmured.

"From it's nose,"Essy exclaimed, pointing to her nose. "Diego told me!"

"Ah,"Isaac replied. He walked over to the table and sat in one of the chairs, Essy sitting comfortably in his lap. Jackson pulled out the other chair, doing similar. Lilith leaned forward, her elbows on the table as she huffed. Nora stayed on the couch, continuing her search. She blew blonde bangs out of her face, slightly irritated with the lack of results. Mara pulled out the hair evidence, glancing at it suspiciously. When Cora and Dakarai got back, they would hear about the evidence they found and maybe they could start connecting the dots.

"Godzilla,"Diego sniffled. Isaac's gaze shot towards the young wolf.

"What did you say,"the older wolf asked. Everybody glanced towards the two, almost three, year old.

"Diego's afraid of Godzilla,"Essy mentioned.

"When did he watch Godzilla?"Isaac asked. Diego pointed up at Jackson. The shorter wolf's eyes widened in defense.

"Hey,"he defended. "Don't look at me. I didn't let him watch it." Isaac ignored the statement. Knowing the child must have watched it from afar. Maybe only caught a glimpse of the creature wrecking havoc in Japan when he was supposed to be in bed.

"Diego, did the monster look like Godzilla?"Diego nodded, focused on the lapel of Jackson's shirt as he fiddled with it. A lightbulb went off. It doesn't stay the same. Cora and Dakarai walked into the motel room and Isaac grinned, triumphantly.

"I think I know what we're dealing with."He informed the group.

Cora and Dakarai explained what they had found, as Isaac pulled up what he believed the creature was. In one account, the creature was pale and wore a hood. The child had explained that it looked like death and was coming to take his dad away. Another said the monster was a zombie. A witch. And so forth. Each monster looked different but Isaac could bet that it was the same creature.

Cora and Dakarai had been posing as child services, saying neighbors had been complaining about nightly screaming and it was their job to check out the issue. They were able to question the children and Cora discovered that quite a few were a little more special than just human. Which proved Isaac's hypothesis correct. But, why it was targeting supernatural children he didn't know. But the one thing that the other two supernaturals worried about, the children were looking sickly. Just like how Isabella looked. They had asked them when their night terrors had started and they replied about three weeks ago and it had been continuous nightmares.

"So, what are we dealing with, Holmes,"Jackson asked, leaning back.

Isaac turned the laptop around, showing the pack. "The boogeyman." The group stared at him, waiting for the wolf to continue. "It's not the sack-man or the El Coco, but the boogeyman."

"What do you mean the boogeyman,"Cora asked, taking the laptop from his hands. "Isn't the boogeyman more of a myth? A legend to make sure naughty children behaved?"

"Well, isn't everything we deal with just a myth,"Isaac retorted. "Aren't we the living embodiment of myths?" Cora nodded, accepting the answer. Her whole childhood, Cora's mother had reassured her that the boogeyman wasn't real. That it was just a story that people made up. She had been afraid of the boogeyman, but her parents reassured her that it could never hurt her. Well, now her one childhood monster had come to life and it was a bit hard to handle.

"You see,"Isaac continued. "There are so many accounts on the boogeyman, but each description is different it never looks the same. In fact, many don't know what it truly looks like. Or if it even exists in a tangible presence." Isaac stood, pacing the room as he thought about the bit of information he had on this mystery creature. "It must take the form of the child's fear,"Isaac considered.

"How do we kill it,"Dakarai asked, getting straight to the point. He had made himself comfortable next to Mara. The raven leaned into his side, her black eyes watching the progression of the conversation.

"Nobody knows,"Isaac explained. "Not even hunters. See, hunters know the story of the boogeyman, but because of it's master disguises they always believed it to be a myth. When one attacks, they don't ever think boogeyman since the information left behind by both clues and witnesses point towards other supernaturals like vampires or werewolves. It disappears. Hunters lose it's trail and end up leaving whatever town it had attacked."

"Or they kill the closest supernatural resident and call it done,"Mara retorted. Lilith scowled.

"Typical hunters,"Cora mumbled, acidly. Isaac ignored her comment and continued his explanation.

"There is literally nothing about this creature in any bestiary or online website,"Isaac continued. "It's bundled in a rubber ball of mystery."

Jackson leaned back, rolling his eyes at the growing excitement in Isaac's eyes. "Wow, you are such a nerd,"Jackson commented with a smirk."How do we stop something, that nobody knows how to stop?"

"That's why we're gonna have to find out ourselves,"Isaac replied. "We also need to understand what it's doing to the kids and why does it seem to be targeting special children specifically."

"Maybe we should have a nice long chat with it,"Jackson quipped, sarcastically. Nora giggled.

"Hey, Mr. Boogeyman,"she impersonated, deepening her voice. "Mind telling us why you keep attacking these kids." Isaac rolled his eyes when Jackson high-fived her. "Get out from under those beds."

"So, back to the topic,"Dakarai stated, pulling everyone back to the previous conversation. "How do we stop it? And if it is intangible, what methods would work?"

"Possibly light,"Mara proposed. It is a creature of the night.

"Or silver?"Lilith added, looking among her pack mates. "Silver seems to work on everything."

"It's probably going to come back here,"Isaac stated. "It seems to give routine visits to each home. We could set a trap? It obviously can be tangible, if it left behind fur and scratch marks."

"And use the pups as bait,"Cora snarled, pulling Essy and Diego close. "I don't think so." Isaac pinched the bridge of his nose, knowing Cora's maternal instincts would kick in at even the consideration her pups might be put in danger.

"We'll figure something out,"Isaac muttered, not wanting to place the pups in any danger either.

"No,"Essy interrupted, she crossed her arms and pouted. "I want to help." The pack glanced at the two small pups, Diego quickly copying his sisters movement.

"Honey, we don't want you in jeopardy,"Cora answered, smoothing back the girl's wild hair. The pup shook her head.

"Others are hurting,"she mumbled. "We can stop it right?" Isaac nodded, slowly, not liking where this conversation was heading. "The boogeyman will be coming back for us, right?"

"We can fin' another way ta stop it, lass,"Lilith replied.

"But, if we wait, it will get away,"the little girl stressed. "I don't like being scared." She looked over at her little brother. "And neither does Diego." The toddler nodded. Essy swallowed down her fear. "We'll go to bed tonight,"the pup mumbled. Diego glanced over at his sister and shook his head. The last couple of days, the pups had refused to sleep and the older pack members had taken shifts staying up with them. They were exhausted and needed sleep.

"Are you sure?"Isaac asked.

"No!"Cora exclaimed. "They're just babies." She pulled Essy and Diego close, her eyes flashing threateningly. Essy turned, grabbing Cora's face and looking her in the eyes. Dark chocolate met light brown.

"It's okay, Cora,"she promised. "We have to stop the monster."

"No, you don't,"Cora protested. "The pack has to stop the monster."

"We're pack too,"Essy reminded, giving a shy smile. Cora sniffed, but she stayed silent. She held the small pup close, burying her nose into the little girl's neck.

"Why are you growing up so fast?!"Cora sobbed. In just a few months, they went from the scared pups in Columbia to fighting against evil. Diego patted Cora on the head, leaning his cheek against her bicep.

"You'll protect us won't you,"Essy directed at the group. Everyone nodded.

"Always and forever,"Isaac replied.

"We'll kill the boogeyman before it even lays a finger on you,"Dakarai promised. Mara snuggled close to the were-lion's side. Isaac looked at the group that surrounded him. Even with a terrifying monster on the loose, he couldn't help but feel thankful that these people had come into his life. They filled an empty void in his soul and became family.

"So,"Cora addressed. "What's the plan?" Isaac smiled. They delved into planning as they tried to pinpoint the monster's weakness.

Hi, thanks for reading this short story. One more chapter I believe and then a multiple adventure story in Central America. Quick question: Are there any creatures or scenarios you would like to see in the coming up stories? Can be relationships, monsters, cute family moments, etc.. I want my readers to be just as involved as I am in writing it. Thanks again for reading. Please let me know in a review.
