Author's Notes: Hey guys, its Logan GC. Apologies for the delay, this chapter really took a long time to write. This is completely original and easily my most biggest one to date. As always, thank you so much for your patience and understanding. Hopefully, the chapter is to your liking. Enjoy.
Chapter 27: Obsession
Mount Justice December 8th 1520 hours
"There's something I have to tell you. Something… that's been bothering me for a while now." Galen spoke quietly to Black Canary, meeting in a small conference room on behalf of the Force-user's request. Ever since he arrived in this world of heroes, the young man was stricken with visions of the past. Visions that would keep him awake at night leave him confused, angry, scared, of who or what he once was. Recently, his visions became worse. For every new memory, pain would crash into his head, with death becoming a common theme, as he would hear dying screams echo in his mind.
What was even worse as how he lost control, attacking the bounty hunter Fett, the man who knew who he was, like a deranged animal and almost killed him on the previous mission. What the hell is wrong with me? Galen would think to himself, ashamed for acting in such a way three days ago. The mission ended in failure, and Galen really felt the weight of it, losing himself to his anger and forgetting the lessons he was taught of being a hero. Artemis didn't feel all that better, considering the fact that in her fear of the Team realizing that Cheshire is her sister and wanting to prove herself to Red Arrow, she kept the Team separated from each other, which in turn led to Sportsmaster and his allies escaping with whatever that was inside the case.
Wally is still angry with Artemis, and Galen understood why, if only he didn't have to keep the truth a secret, then the Team would understand. In fact, the Force-user not only knew about Artemis' family ties, but that M'gann is actually a White Martian, and is fearful of being rejected and forced to go back to Mars. When Conner came home on Thanksgiving, Galen sensed he was hiding something too, adding further secrets to be piled on, like a tower of lies being hastily constructed until it will inevitably collapse.
For the most part since his unexplained arrival, Galen considered himself to be mostly calm, but even he has a breaking point. His visions are getting worse with each passing day, sleep being a distant dream itself. His friends were right, he needed to talk to Canary, he can't keep it to himself forever. Galen just hoped that Artemis, M'gann, and Conner will do the same when they feel they shouldn't hide what is true anymore.
Galen sat on a green sofa, clasping his hands together as Canary sat on a chair opposite of him, staring at the young man with concern.
"And what's been bothering you, Galen? Is it the mission?" The blonde heroine asked, noticing the teen's discomfort.
Galen shook his head. "Well, not exactly. It's been something that was with me since I first came here." He explained vaguely as he noticed Canary's blue eyes narrow in curiosity. "Even though I have amnesia, I've been receiving memories… visions of what my past life is like." The Force-user added, seeing that Canary's lips began to form a smile.
"That's wonderful, Galen. There are now answers to help you discover who you are." The blonde hero supported optimistically, though her smile lessened as Galen's frown did not waver.
"Trust me, my memories are anything but insightful." Galen replied, the teen's reply sullen as Canary could see the internal torment through his brown eyes.
"Tell me, what are these… visions like?" The beautiful blonde carefully asked, as Galen quietly exhaled.
"Pain, misery, death." The Force-user quietly responded as Canary became more concerned, leaning forward to hear more. "I see different places, creatures, but the people I once knew… sometimes I can't make them out. Sometimes I do, but it's… it's so confusing." Galen explained the best he could, his forehead creasing in frustration. "Every day, the visions get worse. I hear screams, people dying, maniacal laughter, a deep mechanical voice and… that breathing." The young man added, his skin crawling with goosebumps as he remembered how much he hated it. Subconsciously, he placed his hand on his stomach, reliving the feeling of being impaled through that area. Realizing that Canary was looking, he lowered his hand and continued. "Recently, every time I get a memory, it hurts. Like someone set a bomb on my skull and exploded." Galen described, placing a hand to support his head, his tormented look still evident.
Canary was shocked at the young man's revelations, being more concerned than ever. "Galen, why didn't you tell me sooner?" The heroine asked, her tone close to a mother seeing her child suffering from a flu that will not go away.
The young man sighed, his posture slumped as he leaned back on the sofa. "To be honest, I don't know. When I first had a vision, I was excited, ecstatic even. I really wanted to know more about who I was. But now, with everything that's been happening…" Galen paused, sitting up straight as he looked Canary in the eyes. "…I'm afraid."
The blonde hero stared at Galen, trying to locate deceit. But as she stared at his brown eyes, underneath his calm exterior, she saw genuine fear. And knowing his accomplishments and courage on the Team, fear is the last thing Canary would use to describe Galen, but here he is now.
Wanting to help the young man, Canary needed to know the exact source of his problem. Leaning forward, she asks carefully "And what scares you the most?"
For a moment, Galen remained silent. Should he tell her what Fett said? Outside of Artemis, he never told anyone else what the bounty hunter said to him, that he was a criminal, a murderer, a traitor. The way that the bounty hunter said all that to him in such… disdain, really got to the young hero. Was he that much of a monster in his past? What did he do? Why is he being hunted? Why is Fett working with Cheshire and Sportsmaster? And these questions are being added to the already large amount of concerns that Galen has been asking himself with. His knowledge of the Force, the source that his power is derived from, is limited though he does have a firmer grasp of it's power with each passing day. He still didn't know why the Force gave him a "second chance" like what his father said. My father. How was he going to explain that to everyone? Oh yeah, on Halloween, I met a ghost-like figure who told me he was my father and that I made a big sacrifice so this all-powerful Force gave me a second chance, crazy right? And that's not including secrets that Artemis and M'gann confided in him in which he swore to secrecy.
It's a miracle that Galen didn't completely lose it at this point, the young hero practically reaching his breaking point. A portion of him wanted to the truth, to just tell everything to Canary about his father, what Fett said to him, everything. On the other hand, he promised to Artemis and M'gann to keep their secrets, and who knows how Canary will react to Galen's cluster mess of his past life. Realizing he was silent for too long and that the blonde heroine began to look at him suspiciously, Galen snapped out of his jumbled thoughts, having an answer. Composing himself, the Force-user opened his mouth, ready to respond…
"Attention Team, gather in the mission room immediately for briefing." The Dark Knight's voice echoed through the intercom, disrupting and consequently ending the conversation between Galen and Canary. From the tone of Batman's voice, it sounded urgent, both of them standing and headed out.
As the two exited the room, Galen spoke up. "Another mission?" He asked, surprised that there was an assignment so soon.
Canary gave an uncertain look in return. "I'm not sure. If there was one, I would have been notified." She responded, getting annoyed when Bruce didn't tell her what he had in mind beforehand. Ignoring her frustrations at the bat-obsessed billionaire, she gave a smile to the young man. "You did the right thing for coming to me with this issue, Galen. If you want, you can meet with me later so we can finish our conversation." She offered, with Galen giving a small grin in return.
"Thank you, Canary." The young man responded in great appreciation, the blonde beauty's smile never wavering.
"Anytime." She responded, the two walking to the mission room in a comfortable silence.
Blüdhaven December 8th 1525 hours
Boba Fett could feel his troopers eye him as the bounty hunter marched through their hideout, intent of speaking to Darth Vader. Despite communications being repaired a few days ago, the Mandalorian was hesitant on replying back to the Dark Lord, especially with the results of his… recent failure on capturing the boy. The bounty hunter understood why he failed, he was too confident. He was certain his previous success of fighting Jedi and the aid of the Terror Troopers would carry him through. He was wrong, and his mistake almost cost him his life.
The delay of a response wasn't just fear of failure. The New Orleans warehouse was Fett's new base of operations that the Shadows used for their recent assignment. Before the child heroes and the Jedi attempted to uncover the Shadows' plans, Fett ordered his men to take the Slave I, and locate the older safe house in Blüdhaven after all the men rendezvoused at the safe house in Jersey City.
Luckily, the old base remained untouched and undiscovered, as though they never left. The safe house was very similar to the one in New Orleans, though the conditions for the one in Blüdhaven were in more disrepair. Despite several holes in the ceiling and the inside smelling of damp and decaying wood, to Fett, it was more luxurious than any high-price villa on Coruscant. It also had a bonus of a basement that is large enough to house his beloved Slave I, without the worry of trying to hide her in the forest.
As he delayed on making a reply, the bounty hunter spent those few days thinking of a suitable answer that Vader could accept. Though, Fett has a feeling that the Sith would see through his bluff, regardless of what explanation he would say. Knowing that he delayed a response for too long, Fett re-opened communications, and awaited for a response. Surely enough, the holographic image of Darth Vader came through, his arms crossed over his chest. Though the Dark Lord seemed casual, Fett could tell he was displeased with him.
"My readings indicated that Captain Targo has repaired communications days ago, yet you did not reply. Any particular reason for this delay?" Vader began, his baritone voice booming through the transmission, as Targo and some of the men watched from the background.
Not wanting to be intimidated, the bounty hunter resumed his dignified posture. "I have encountered the boy." Fett spoke, ignoring Vader's question as he hoped the Dark Lord would be interested with the news. It seemed to slightly work, as Vader lowered his arms and stepped closer in the hologram. "I also have confirmation that he is working with this Justice League and its allies." He added, hoping the information would please his employer.
"And the results of the encounter?" Vader asked, his tone sharp with a warning edge to it, almost as if daring Fett to lie. While the Mandalorian never believed in the Force, he was aware of how Vader could see through lies and how severe the Dark Lord's punishments were. Targo looked from the hologram to the bounty hunter, wondering how Fett will respond.
"Unfortunately, the communications were damaged which required most of the men to repair it. Because of that misfortune, I was unable to defeat the boy with the limited reinforcements I had available." The bounty hunter told honestly, knowing that Vader would find out the truth eventually. "However, I have become close with organizations that are enemies with the Justice League and I am closing in on where the boy is hiding." Fett added, wanting to prove to Vader that he wasn't completely incompetent. "I just need more time to properly fi—"
The bounty hunter was cut off midsentence as he felt an invisible hand strangling his neck, slowly lowering any chance to breathe properly. Fett choked in his helmet as his hands clawed his neck in a desperate attempt to break free but to no avail. If Fett's coughing didn't cloud his visor, he would have realized he was being lifted off the ground but he was too much in pain to notice.
"I did not hire you for your failure, bounty hunter." Vader's voice echoed through Fett's ears. "Did you forget that the Force is still present in this other galaxy due to the tear in reality?" The Sith continued as Fett felt losing more oxygen by the second. "I gave you the necessary men and equipment for this assignment, and in return, I expect results. Finish the job, or I will finish it for you." And with that final remark, the transmission ended as Fett fell to the floor, coughing wildly to regain his breathing.
Using a nearby wall for support, Fett picked himself up, the bounty hunter clearing his throat as he regained his breathing. Panting slightly, Fett turned around and saw the men staring back, who witnessed what just occurred.
"Get back to your stations." The Mandalorian growled in a threatening tone, daring any one of them to make a remark over what has transpired. The soldiers obeyed, quietly returning back to their tasks as though nothing happened, not wishing to feel the wrath of an enraged Mandalorian. Targo, who turned and planned on joining his comrades, heard Fett call his name. "Captain, a word." The bounty hunter ordered, with the 501st soldier stopping immediately.
Although Targo is the highest-ranking officer present, Lord Vader requested that all soldiers follow instructions from the bounty hunter on this extremely confidential mission. Even though the Imperial's opinion of bounty hunters barking orders at him and his men felt demeaning toward his loyalty to the Empire, Targo will respect Vader's order no matter how petty it may feel.
"Yes sir?" Targo asked, his voice strictly professional and clear through the Stormtrooper helmet awaiting the bounty hunter's response, directly standing opposite of the Mandalorian, who was preoccupied by checking his throat for any external damage.
Fett regarded the soldier for a moment before lowering his hand and taking out a crate, filled with the remaining rations for their duration on Earth. "After my encounter with the Jedi, I have been recounting what food we have left ever since our arrival." The bounty hunter stated, lifting the lid ajar to reveal a modest amount of packaged Imperial army rations before closing it. "Our rations will hold, though if other attempts to capture the Jedi end in similar results, we may be stuck here longer than expected." Fett added, placing the crate back on the floor. Though the bounty hunter was skilled on keeping his voice professional and neutral, Targo heard a subtle change in the Mandalorian's octave. Whether it was concern, frustration, and anger Targo couldn't specify. Perhaps it was all three.
"You're saying that we might not have enough food if the assignment is longer than anticipated." The Imperial captain stated, not bothering to hide the disappointing tone in his voice. Ever since Targo was chosen by Lord Vader to accompany Fett into a new universe, the 501st soldier was more than happy to demonstrate the combat skills he learned serving under Empire. However, it has been almost a standard month since their arrival and subsequent partnership with the League of Shadows with little results given. With the exception of the breaking out Slade Wilson as an audition to the Shadows, Targo was relegated to guard duty and communications repairman. In his mind, the sooner they capture this Jedi, the better. He is a soldier, through and through. Being assigned on guard duty made the Imperial miss being apart on combat missions to crush rebel scum back in the home galaxy.
Fett remained silent on Targo's remark, neither confirming nor denying the Imperial's statement. "Regardless…" Fett began speaking again, his attention solely on Targo. "…For now, our rations are not the concern." The bounty hunter than placed a black, metallic suitcase next to him, the metal gleaming off of whatever sunlight entered the safe house. Targo immediately knew what it was; the reward money for assisting Cheshire and Sportsmaster in breaking out Slade Wilson. Seeing that Fett has the Imperial's undivided attention, the Mandalorian continued. "It's dawned on me that the Jedi is more powerful than anticipated. In addition, from what Sportsmaster has told me, there are potentially more of those young heroes with the Jedi." Fett explained, opening the case to reveal neat stacks of paper currency, which Targo suspected is worth tremendous value around here. Though if Targo remembered correctly, he could've sworn there was more than is shown in the case…
Fett looked at the bills, the reflection of the green paper glancing off his visor before returning his gaze back to Targo. "I didn't delay a response to Lord Vader without a reason. I made a deal with criminal and arms dealer Black Mask, who resides in Gotham." The Mandalorian continued, taking out a small holographic projector from his pocket. Pressing the palm-shaped center, a hologram of said crime lord appeared before Targo. The Imperial captain grimaced at the face inside his helmet, taking notice of the black skull-shaped mask the criminal is wearing. "Clearly, we need more heavy ordnance if my first attempt at capturing the Jedi is any indication." Fett explained, pressing the palm-shaped center of the projector, deactivating the hologram and placing the device back in his pocket. "I arranged a deal with Mask. Thirty-five thousand bills in exchange for the planet's best assault weapons, explosives, and portable rockets that are on this planet's black market." The bounty hunter concluded, closing the case before handing it to the 501st captain, standing motionless. "The deal I made with Mask will commence tonight in Gotham within the sewer system, according to this country's time zone at 1830 hours, or six and a half hours past midday. Your assignment will be to make sure this transaction is successful, and return back to base with the weapons intact." As Targo now holds the case in his hands, the Imperial furrows his brow in confusion.
"So you want me to make sure your deal works out?" The 501st soldier clarified, a hint of aggravation noticeable in his voice as now he is promoted from guard to errand boy.
Fett ignored the irritated inflection present in Targo's voice and continued. "My armor received slight damage from my encounter with the Jedi. I have to make sure he didn't cut my armor plating too bad with his lightsaber. I also have to check the cargo hold of Slave I, to double-check our munitions. Otherwise, those weapons Black Mask has could help out our mission significantly." Fett explained, his tone having no objections though Targo is far from pleased.
"Why do we need this planet's weapons anyway? Imperial technology is lightyears more advanced than whatever scrap this system calls a rifle." Targo exclaimed, the thought of using primitive slugthrowers being more disgusting to him than the after hours in Jabba the Hutt's palace.
"Those weapons may be useful than you realize, captain." Fett responded, with a tone of condescension present in the Mandalorian's voice. "Much like a situation where our rations can be depleted due to overstaying our presence here, the same can be said about our blaster packs and thermal detonators. In the event that does happen, and in worst case, the entirety of the Justice League discover our location before I capture the Jedi, these primitive weapons can mean the difference between life and death." The bounty hunter concluded, his voice ending all debate and if Fett didn't have his helmet on, Targo can imagine the smug grin of superiority the Mandalorian has on right now.
Defeated, Targo gave a barely, audible sigh. "Very well." He responded, his teeth almost grating in irritation. "I will go to this meeting and purchase these weapons." The captain said, obeying orders like how a good soldier should act. Though, Fett almost smirked under his helmet at hearing a grumble following his sentence. Targo looked at the case in his hands then back at the bounty hunter. "What about Sportsmaster? He has grown fond of you, surely, he must have better weapons than what this Black Mask has." The Imperial captain reasoned.
Fett shook his head. "I already tried. Sportsmaster respects me, but his superiors are still hesitant to share all of their toys." The Mandalorian explained. "If I was in their position, I don't blame them." Fett reasoned, before standing to his full height. "If there are no more questions, I suggest you get going. The Terror Troopers have acquired a civilian vehicle from Blüdhaven. Considering that in your record you have piloted an AT-ST walker in the battlefield, an automobile should not be difficult to drive." Fett ordered, outstretching his hand towards Targo with something clenched in his fist. "Here. This is a schematic detailing Gotham City, from the outskirts to the city center with road routes informing you how to get there." The bounty hunter stated, as Targo opened his hand for the object that Fett will give him. It was the holographic projector from earlier as the Mandalorian dropped the device into Targo's free hand, with the other hand holding the case. "Before you reach the outskirts of the city, press the projector. It should automatically show you the nearest entrance into the sewer system outside the city limits. Once you are inside the sewer, I detailed routes to traverse the section of the sewer where the transaction will take place." Fett explained, as Targo glances at the projector in his other hand. "If there's any other concern, now is the time to speak." The bounty hunter offered, as Targo took a moment to digest all the information he was given.
For a brief minute, Targo looked at the projector and the case in his hands before looking back to Fett. The Imperial trooper's answer was a shake of his head. That was all Fett needed to hear. The bounty hunter gave an approving nod and Targo began to walk out the safe house, intent of completing the mission. While on his way, he spots several other 501st soldiers watching his exchange with Fett from their stations. "You three, with me. And bring my blaster!" The captain barked, as the three other soldiers immediately ran to their superior's side, all of them carrying blasters (as well as Targo's) in the chance that the deal will go wrong.
Fett watches as the Stormtroopers exit the warehouse, seeing them closing the door and shortly afterward, hearing the ignition of the automobile as it takes off. The bounty hunter then summons his six Imperial probe droids, the surveillance units beeping rapidly in Imperial code.
"All of you, go to these locations." Fett ordered, bringing up a map of the continental United States through the use of another holographic projector Fett kept on his person. As the map of the country is seen, six red dots blink rapidly, some close to Blüdhaven while others are further west. "These are the cities I want each of you to monitor; Gotham, Metropolis, New York, Star City, Coast City, and Central City." Fett listed as the probe droids documented his orders. "These cities have the highest probability of Justice League member activity, which in turn, a potential lead on the location of the Jedi and his friends." Fett continued. "Search every street, corner, and alleyway, and don't return until at least one of you finds anything that will lead me closer to the boy. Stay out of sight, from both local authorities and League members alike. If you are spotted, flee the scene at once to find an area where it is safe. If any of you are caught and there is no other alternative means of escape, activate your self-destruct. I can not risk the Justice League tracking the frequency to this location." Fett ordered, the probe droids receiving their assignment. With mechanical beeps of acknowledgment, the droids left in short order, exiting Fett's hidden base of operations to journey into their respective concrete jungles.
With a weary sigh, Fett sat down and checked his throat with his hand one more time if barking orders around caused any visible stress to his vocal cords. The bounty hunter knew of Vader's infamous reputation for choking out subordinates, but to experience it first hand in another galaxy no less, was something else entirely. The Mandalorian understood that Vader had little tolerance for failure, considering he was lucky compared to many other officers who didn't have Grand Moff Tarkin to keep Vader in line. Seeing his throat just fine, the bounty hunter turned his attention to several other members of the 501st. "You four. Come with me to the basement, I need help with an inventory check on Slave I." Fett ordered, the soldiers snapped in attention.
"Yes sir." All four responded at once, following the Mandalorian to the lower level of the safe house. As the soldiers followed Fett below, the bounty hunter's thoughts shifted to his encounter with the boy. A wave of anger and vengeance began to swell, Fett wanting no more than to find him and gladly drag the boy in chains to Vader for delaying his return home and his reward.
Fett will find and capture the Jedi. Not even the boy's allies in the Justice League or his sidekick friends will stop the bounty hunter from fulfilling his mission. He's proven time and again, that he is the best for a reason. Back home, he has chased targets to the farthest edges of the galaxy. Fett knows considering the Jedi is on one planet, a planet that has not developed widespread galactic travel yet for its populace, this mission will end very soon.
As a man of his word, that is a promise he intends on keeping.
As Galen entered the mission room, the rest of the Team was present, all dressed in civilian attire with the exception of Batman, who is standing in the center. Conner and M'gann stood close together, as did Jason and Tora, with Wolf sleeping in his usual corner. Kaldur was closest to the center of the room, with Robin next to him. Zatanna leaned on the wall, looking bored. Though, the Boy Wonder gave a backward glance to the young sorceress and offered a comforting grin. The magician saw his grin as her blue eyes lit up, returning one of her own. Wally was eating a candy bar, munching on it happily though his mood turned sour as he saw Artemis, giving her an angry look after her deception on the last mission. The blonde archer sighed when she saw the speedster's glare, though she retained a small smile when Galen approached her.
"Hey." Galen greeted warmly, sensing her residual guilt from what happened on the mission and hoped his presence here will help her feel a little better. It seems to work, as Galen could tell that she is glad to see him, her warm smile still evident.
"Hey." She echoed quietly, the archer feeling less tense with Galen here, his warm brown eyes more comforting than any cup of hot chocolate. Artemis really doesn't give Galen enough credit. Anytime she's dealing with something that's been affecting her personally, he's been there for her, and the same could be said about her being there for him. The archer really didn't know what to call their relationship. They aren't technically together, yet it is quite obvious to everyone that what they have is much deeper than a simple friendship.
"How are you doing?" The Force-user asked, hoping Artemis felt better from what happened the last couple of days ago.
The blonde's smile lessened slightly. "I'm fine, though some are still… upset." Artemis replied, as she gave a quick backward glance to Wally, who looked like he was actively avoiding her.
Galen also looked at the speedster's direction before turning his attention back to the archer. "Give Wally some time. He'll understand eventually." The Force-user replied with reassurance, his calming grin still noticeable. Artemis nodded, feeling a little better and really thankful that there was at least one person on this Team who trusts and cares for her on such a personal level. Before she could continue the conversation, the Dark Knight spoke up.
"Now that everyone is present…" Batman's monotone voice echoed throughout the room, snapping everyone into attention. "…we can begin." The masked detective started as Wally gave a quick head count, realizing one was missing.
"Wait, where's Roy?" The redhead asked, the crimson-clad archer nowhere in sight as the teen looked around for his friend.
"Red Arrow left the Cave this morning, following a lead in Central City to locate Cheshire." Batman quickly explained to the speedster before setting his sights on the Team as a whole. "Though, he is the main reason why we are meeting here." The Dark Knight added, as members of the Team looked confused at the older hero's answer.
Black Canary, who accompanied Galen to the mission room, spoke up for everyone. "Batman, what is this about?" The heroine asked, her tone unsure where this conversation will go.
The Dark Knight looked from Canary to Kaldur. "Aqualad informed me of what had occurred on New Orleans, in which Sportsmaster and Cheshire escaped with an attaché briefcase. He also told me that there were several unknowns also present as well, aiding them with their plans." Batman began as Wally winced in memory.
"Oh yeah, those faceless assassin dudes. Who could forget about them and their discount phasers." The speedster grumbled under his breath, remembering the paralyzing shock he experienced from them as Robin gave a grin at his friend's sci-fi reference.
Ignoring Wally's comment, Batman continued. "However, before Red Arrow left for his search this morning, he told me additional information regarding the mission." Galen began to feel agitated, nervous on what the Dark Knight will say next. "He stated there was a man in green armor who carried futuristic weapons and equipment, such as a jetpack." Batman added, with members of the Team nodded at the information.
"And we are sure that it's the same person who you fought in Gotham?" M'gann asked, the Dark Knight neither confirmed nor denied an answer.
"I'm certain Starkiller has the definite answer to your question." The Caped Crusader responded as he and the others present in the room shifted their eyes toward the Force-user. With everyone staring at him, Galen eyed Batman in uncertainty. What is he doing? The young man thought to himself. Under his stoic exterior, Galen sensed that Batman was studying him, as though he were tested. The young man began to feel frustration, those blank white eyes of the cowl analyzing him. Does he want to see my reaction? Another thought entered his mind, his anger increasing that Batman would secretly judge him on something. But right now, he needed to focus and give a proper response.
Snapping out of his thoughts and calming down, Galen turned his head to the Martian girl and nodded in confirmation. "Yeah, it was him. He confirmed it himself that he fought Batman." The Force-user carefully responded, answering M'gann's question before staring back at the Dark Knight, hoping his answer would satisfy the older hero's suspicions. Galen was telling the truth, albeit not all what Fett said to him, but the truth nonetheless.
Batman's eyes narrowed slightly behind his cowl. Years of detective work allowed the Caped Crusader to determine whether or not individuals would reveal the truth. While Galen's answer is honest, the older hero noticed that the younger man took a few moments to formulate a response, indicating hesitation. This only supports Batman's theory that the young man is not telling the entire truth, purposefully withholding information. The World's Greatest Detective took a mental note on Galen's physical and oral response and proceeded onward.
"In any case, Red Arrow also informed me of your encounter with the armored mercenary." Batman added, which Galen felt his anxiety rising up again, his palms beginning to sweat at what the other archer told the bat-themed hero. "He noticed during your engagement that the bounty hunter had a weapon that countered the use of your lightsaber, deactivating it." The Dark Knight included, which members of the Team were surprised by this news.
"Wow, I didn't know that someone could do that. That's so not asterous." Robin spoke up, Galen nodding in agreement. The Force-user would replay that moment over and over in his mind, still not getting over the initial shock of how his weapon got disabled so easily. In fact, his arm now has a permanent scar from the engagement thanks to that weapon of his, as well as a growing bruise on his lower jaw from getting punched in his shock.
"It is clear that the mercenary prepared contingencies against you, which now begs the question, do you know why this man is hunting you? Has he said anything to reveal his motivations?" Batman asked, putting Galen on the spot once more. The Dark Knight remembered what the bounty hunter said to him during that scuffle in Gotham, that the boy, standing a few feet away from him, is a murderer, a killer, an outlaw. The hero isn't stupid, Batman knows that the armored man wasn't revealing the whole truth and most likely was lying, but this could be the only link as to who Galen is. Batman understood that the boy has amnesia and does not remember his past completely, but right now with Galen acting as though he's hiding something, what the bounty hunter said may actually have some meaning.
It was at this point that the Force-user's patience reached its breaking point, these series of questions becoming more and more of an interrogation. With a weary sigh, Galen calmed himself before responding to the Caped Crusader. "I'm not sure exactly. He mentioned something about me offending his employer. Details on anything else… got fuzzy." His last sentence came off more softly than expected, his mind gazing back to his rage that night as his mouth turned into a pensive frown. Almost as though my anger consumed me… and I became something else. He added as a thought to himself.
Batman remained impassive, mentally taking a notice in the change of Galen's demeanor on his last reply before turning his attention to Kaldur. "Aqualad, is there anything else about these unknowns that should be a concern?" The Dark Knight asked, with the leader of the Team furrowing his brow in recollection.
"I believe any information I can give you Batman was my report after the mission ended in failure." The Atlantean answered honestly, his pale eyes matching the white lens of the Caped Crusader's cowl. "The only new information I can think of are that these assassins were completely foreign to us. And next time we encounter them again, we will not be caught off-guard."
Wally nodded at the Atlantean's words. "Yeah, I want some payback. Those stun guns they had really hurt." The speedster emphasized, his green eyes filled with desire to find the elusive assassins and return the favor.
The Boy Wonder, like his mentor, realized how bad the mission was to the Team personally. Even after reading the report Kaldur made the night the Team returned to the Cave, clearly some wounds were made. More evidently the way Robin sees his best friend occasionally sending a glare at Artemis every few minutes. "Man, I kinda wish I was there with you guys." The young teen hero added, even wearing dark glasses, his teammates can see the sympathy on his face.
Conner crossed his arms as he leaned back against the wall. "Ditto." He replied, earning agreeable glances from M'gann and Zatanna.
"Regardless, not every mission will be a success, particularly assignments that have unforeseen variables. The mission is a failure, but lessons can be learned from defeat. As Aqualad said, next time you will be ready." Batman explained, with Robin most noticeably having a small grin at his mentor's attempt of elevating the younger heroes' spirits. With that said, the Dark Knight turned his attention to Black Canary. "Canary, I need you to watch surveillance in the Watchtower." The Caped Crusader requested, much to the blonde's confusion.
"Today? I thought it was your shift Batman." The bird-themed heroine asked, looking back at the defender of Gotham with a confused glance.
The World's Greatest Detective shook his head. "There is a meeting in the Hall of Justice which request only the founding members can attend." Batman explained, his tone neutral.
Black Canary crossed her arms. "I should have been notified earlier at least." The bird themed heroine reasoned, her face crossed with annoyance.
The Dark Knight took notice of her issue. "It was a last minute decision. I'll be sure to compensate by working one shift for you in the near future." Batman compromised, as his offer caused the blonde bombshell to grin slightly. With that said, the Caped Crusader turned his gaze to three of the young heroes in particular. "Aqaulad, Robin, Kid Flash; your presence is also required."
All three of said heroes garnered surprised looks, most evidently being Wally, who was busy finishing his candy bar leaving only an empty wrapper. "Wait seriously?" The scarlet-haired ginger asked. "Why us? What about the rest of the Team?" The speedster asked, his arm gesturing to the other young heroes in the room.
"The League members wish to converse with you three as you all, along with Red Arrow, were the first to demand more autonomy from League supervision. The meeting will entail if your opinion or other concerns have changed ever since the investigation at the Cadmus facility from July." Batman explained, though some of the younger heroes exchanged glances with one another. The mention of Cadmus, especially over what happened in Thanksgiving, caused Conner to tense. M'gann, seeing at how the Kryptonian stiffened at the mention, placed a supporting green hand on his shoulder along with a comforting grin. At that action, Conner relaxed and likewise, offered a small, thankful grin in return.
"So, we'll just stay here and wait for our turn?" Zatanna asked, not the only one feeling left out in this evaluation meeting and practically speaking for the other young heroes.
Batman turned his gaze to the young magician. "There will be another day for each of your respective evaluations." The Dark Knight explained before returning his sights to the three, chosen heroes. "All three of you, suit up. We will be leaving shortly. The rest, dismissed." And with that order, the mission room began to disperse. Notably, Kaldur, Robin, and Wally going to change into their respective hero personas. Wally was the first to exit, brushing past Artemis. Kaldur quickly followed with Robin last. Before Robin left the room, he was stopped by Zatanna.
"Let me know if you get bored and hacked something." The magician said with a small smile, as the Boy Wonder formed a grin of his own.
"Wouldn't be the first time." Robin replied with a playful tone. As they were talking, Batman was watching the exchange from a distance. Had no one else been here, the Dark Knight would have given his ward an approving grin, only reserved for those he cared for the most. His musing were cut short when Black Canary just walked past him, a few feet away from the zeta tube.
"What is this meeting really about?" She asked, her voice low enough that only Batman can hear. Her only response was an impassive look from the darkened cowl. The blonde heroine rolled her eyes, typical Bruce paranoia. "Fine. Let me know later." She requested before going to the Watchtower, the Zeta tube announcing her departure.
With the mission room having more space than earlier, Artemis began looking for Galen… who had his backpack from school ready by the side. A confused look on her face, the blonde archer walked forward to the Force-user, who just finished closing a zipper.
"Galen?" Artemis asked, as the amnesiac teen looked behind surprised.
"Oh hey Artemis." The other teen greeted, with the archer's steel eyes looking from the backpack to Galen.
"Are… are you going out?" The archer asked, her voice filled with a mixture of emotions that Galen couldn't specify which one is the most prominent.
The Force-user nodded slowly. "Yeah… I want to walk around for a bit. Clear my head, especially…" He paused, noticing Batman still in the center of the room. Leaning forward, Galen's voice lowered to that of a whisper. "Artemis, I need to get out of here. What happened between me and Fett… it keeps playing in my mind. I… I need some air." He explained, the young man's voice evident of desperation and remorse for the action he almost committed a few nights ago.
"Galen…" Artemis began, grasping his shoulders as her grey eyes locked with his brown eyes. "…I told you, what Fett said to you doesn't matter." She replied, her voice matching his in quietness, their conversation just for the two of them. "You're good. Stop doing this to yourself." She stated, her demand sounding more like a plea in this instance.
The young hero sighed. "I just need some time to think." Galen assured, lowering Artemis' arms from his shoulders. "Please, Artemis… I need this." He concluded, a voice so soft that the blonde archer sighed in defeat.
"Okay." Artemis replied, accepting Galen's desire to go out alone for the afternoon. Though, the archer internally wanted him to stay. The previous mission also hit her on a level too. That said, as Artemis looked into the Force-users brown eyes, she saw the fear and regret in those chocolate orbs. The regret of losing self-control. "Okay, okay… I get it. If you need some space…" The blonde archer said, having a supporting grin. "…Then I'm for it." She concluded, wanting her friend, well more than a friend, to gather himself back together.
With her understanding, Galen smiled and embraced her with a light hug. "Thanks Artemis." He thanked, with the blonde returning the gesture, though a little hesitation was on her part to let go when the hug ended. With the blonde understanding of his dilemma, the amnesiac young man placed his backpack on his back and began moving towards the Zeta tubes. But before he could walk any closer, Artemis stopped him one last time.
"Wait Galen…!" Artemis called out, stopping the young man in his tracks. Turning around at her request, the Force-user looked at her quizzically as Artemis held his hands, grasping at his sleeved shirt to temporary extend his presence in the Cave. "Just tell me one, more thing. You're only taking a walk right? Nothing else that I should know?" She asked, her gray eyes examining to see if he will do something as stupid as she did on the previous mission.
For a brief moment, Galen didn't directly look at her eyes before gazing back confidently. "I won't do anything too intense. I just want to use the zeta tube, walk around New York for a few hours to clear my head, and come back before midnight. If I do stumble into something, I can handle myself." The young man responded, his demeanor changed with more positivity than how he was the past couple of days. For Artemis, she suspects that he's putting on a front to not let her be worried about him. Nonetheless, she relented.
"Alright, before midnight okay." She requested, finally letting go with Galen nodding, intending to keep his word. The two shared one, last gaze with each other before the young man turned around, adjusted his backpack, and proceeded to walk at one of the Zeta tubes. His small grin he had talking to Artemis quickly turned into a frown as he noticed Batman staring in his direction.
"Going somewhere?" The Dark Knight asked, his question sounding more as a demand than anything else.
Even though it was a question, Galen's forehead creased with annoyance, probably at Batman's mini interrogation back at the Team briefing earlier. "I'm going out for some air, need to clear some things. I'll be back before midnight." The young man explained, before stopping next to Batman, noticing the older hero's stare hadn't disappeared. "Is there a problem?" Galen asked, though his patience began to diminish as indicated by a tone of annoyance in his voice.
For a few seconds, Batman continued his stare, the human lie detector examining every physical detail of Galen's person for twitches or involuntary ways of the human body showcasing deception. With the tense moment subsided, Batman's eyes narrowed at the young man behind his cowl. "Don't cause trouble." The Caped Crusader warned, a tone in his voice offering no objections.
Galen merely nodded, acknowledging Batman's order as he walked to one of the Zeta tubes, the mechanical marvel sending its traveler to New York City. The Dark Knight looked from the recently used Zeta tube to Artemis, with the blonde leaving the mission room to join the other young heroes in the kitchen.
It was then that Batman's frown deepened, reminding himself of the words Red Arrow said to him earlier about the failed mission in New Orleans as he waited for Robin, Kid Flash, and Aqualad.
Gotham City December 8th 1610 hours
The drive towards the outskirts of Gotham wasn't as long as Targo thought, him alongside the three other 501st members all dressed in Earth civilian attire that the Terror Troopers acquired along with the automobile, with the captain driving them all near the outskirts outside the city.
Targo was also grateful how close Blüdhaven is to Gotham, their time going to the destination in just under forty five minutes despite passing the appropriate speed limits on the road. The Imperial captain paid no mind to these laws; the sooner he's done being Fett's errand boy, the better. Targo also disliked the civilian clothes he's wearing, the cotton shirt obviously inferior to quality Imperial fabric back home.
Targo's eyes dart between the holographic route presented to him on the dashboard and the road, his foot firmly placed on the accelerator to increase speed. The other 501st members remained quiet, they too eager to get this assignment over with as well. The soldier next to him is fairly younger, fair skinned and looking to be in his twenties. Though Targo knows that age hardly is a detriment to be in the 501st. From Targo's perspective, experience matters most. The other two soldiers in the back looked physically identical to each other, aside from the various scars earned in battle.
To the average citizen on Earth, the two soldiers can be seen as identical twins. Although uncommon, it is not unheard of and probably wouldn't bat an eye with an exception being made to the scars. Targo, however, knew that the two are clones. In fact, a majority of the 501st are cloned humans, with the Jango Fett genes being phased out for other templates. The clones in the back had darker, tanned skin, though not as dark as the Fett phenotype. Despite the majority of the 501st populated by clone troopers, there were a few human born members in the ranks, Targo and the trooper next to him being proof of that. Although, only the very best can be hand-selected by Lord Vader personally to serve in the 501st, and Targo earned his position throughout his service to the Empire. A service that Targo will gladly continue when the invasion fleet arrives to this miserable planet for Imperial dominium.
The captain's thoughts divert back to the road, with the hologram directing their route blinking red, indicating they were close to the entry sewer point. Slowing down the vehicle, Targo parks the car off the road with the sewer pipe several feet away. Turning off the hologram and shutting the ignition, the four Strormtroopers exit the vehicle, their noses immediately picking up the stench of raw sewage close by.
Targo wrinkled his nose in disgust at the smell as he gave a quick glance to Gotham City, which he could see the outline of where the actual city began. Although it is early by Earth standards, the winter on this part of the globe is noticeable, with the Sun becoming dimmer by the hour. Targo immediately returned to the topic at hand; completing the mission.
"Corporal..." Targo began, with the young, other born human soldier snapped into attention. "…Get our armor and weapons from the trunk. Should the deal fall apart, I'd hate to die wearing Earth's excuse for clothing material." The superior officer ordered as the younger man nodded.
"Yes sir." The lower-ranked officer replied, going to the trunk as Targo turned his attention to the two cloned soldiers.
"Lieutenant." Targo began, speaking to the clone with a scar that travelled across his left eye. "Do you have the case with you?"
Said clone displays the metallic object, gesturing it with his left hand for which he held it with. Targo nods in acknowledgement as all three of their attention turns to the corporal, who drops a duffel bag at their feet. The captain then kneels down, pulls open the zipper, and grins as Stormtrooper armor plating and E-11 blaster rifles gleam from what little Sun exposure is left.
Eager to finally start the mission and leave the sewers as soon as they can, Targo takes his trusted blaster and securely places the weapon in his grip. "Lets get to work."
Hall of Justice December 8th 1615 hours
Déjà vu was the word that echoed through Robin's head as he, Kid Flash, and Aqualad entered the Hall through the zeta tubes with Batman leading them. The Boy Wonder really did not anticipate how much has happened over the last several months. From wanting more autonomy to going on covert missions to getting new members, being part of the Team really became a turning point for not just his superhero career, but his friends as well.
Speaking of friends, they arrived at the Hall a little late mostly because of Wally. The night before, the speedster had a bet with the Boy Wonder that his extremely fast metabolism can handle all the fast food he can eat and digest it before serious indigestion can occur. To Wally's credit, he was fine in the evening… before the food sat in his stomach like a rock the following day and needed to use the restroom.
Robin slightly chuckles as his best friend grumbles to himself, placing a hand on his stomach as the two along with Aqualad are being led to the meeting room by Batman. "You were saying about your metabolism?" The Boy Wonder said, earning an annoyed glance from the speedster.
"Hey, I did good!" Kid Flash protested, before a slight groan of discomfort exited his mouth. "I just think eating that extra candy bar today might have set my stomach over the edge." The red head concluded, taking a mental conclusion to never mix Taco Bell with McDonalds ice cream ever again.
Robin's smirk was still evident on his face. "Still, a good ten bucks for me." The Boy Wonder gloated, waving the crumbled bill in his fingers before placing the money in a compartment within his utility belt as Kid Flash resuming his annoyed glare and Aqualad watching with an amused grin.
"Regardless, a valiant attempt nonetheless Kid." The Atlantean complimented, the young man commending the red head for eating such low quality foods back to back.
"Yeah… I'm gonna need some good grub when I get home." Wally concluded, hoping as soon as the meeting's over to eat a delicious home cooked meal his mom is famed for in the West household.
The young heroes' musings were cut short as they stopped in front a closed door, indicating they are just outside the meeting room. All three former sidekicks immediately straightened in attention and demeanor as Batman addressed them all directly. "We're here." The Dark Knight announced, entering first into the room.
Robin followed his mentor second, then Aqualad, and finally Kid Flash. Though when all three went inside, each young hero widened their eyes in surprise. With the exception of all four of them present, no other founding member of the League was present. Instead, just an empty room with a table and lot of unseated chairs.
It didn't take long for all three to come to the same conclusion almost instantly. "Batman, what is the true purpose for bringing us to the Hall?" Aqualad asked, turning to face the Dark Knight and speaking on behalf of all three of them. It was obvious that this "original members" evaluation was a ruse. The real question that hovered the young heroes' thoughts, most evidently from Robin, is why lie in the first place?
Batman hesitated, mostly glancing at his ward for he too had the same confused look as the other two heroes. "It pertains to our discussion on the mission from the Cave." The Caped Crusader replied, as all three listen to hear more of the older hero's logic. "More specifically, additional information Red Arrow informed me of that I was hesitant to share with the other members of the Team."
Aqualad and Robin shared a look of remembrance, more specifically the secret meeting they had about a possible mole on Halloween night. Robin hated that night, hated how he, Kaldur, Roy, and Bruce talked about vital information without the other members knowing. Information, or more specifically, accusations of a traitor even though how well the young heroes worked well together as a unit. Robin hated this, all this sneak talking… it feels dirty. Based on the Atlantean's frown, the Boy Wonder deduced that he too did not like that history is about to repeat itself.
As the two stood and thought over Batman's reasoning, Kid Flash decided to take the initiative and sat down on one of the chairs. "But why us specifically? Why not some of the other members?" The red-head asked, swirling the chair around to ask the Caped Crusader directly.
In an instant, Batman's attention switched from the two standing young heroes to the one in the chair. "You three, as well as Red Arrow, are the original members before the formation of the Team, before mention of a possible mole. You have all served in hero duty the longest in contrast to the other members." The Dark Knight explained, before pausing, as Kid Flash noticed a slight hesitation in the older hero's voice. "But most importantly, I trust all of you the most."
With that statement, all three heroes shared a look of surprise and concern. Surprised, and in a way flattered, by how high in regard Batman considered the three of them. Though, the need for secrecy has become more of a reoccurring theme too much for their liking. "Batman…" Robin began, getting his mentor's attention as the youngest hero walked a few steps closer. "…What did Red Arrow say that made this secret meeting necessary?" The Boy Wonder asked, immediately asking the important question that any student of the World's Greatest Detective would ask. "Why the lies? Why the deception?"
Batman's attention turned to his ward and frowned. To many who was not familiar to the Dark Knight personally like Wally and Kaldur, one would assume the frown meant disapproval for speaking up. Being the adopted son of Bruce Wayne, Robin can read the miniscule details on that frown to know what his mentor will say next. And based on the light creases surrounding the Dark Knight's edges of the mouth, Robin concluded that what next will definitely make them surprised. "When Red Arrow confronted Sportsmaster, he managed to see a glimpse of Starkiller attacking Fett wildly with the lightsaber. Arrow said to me that Starkiller had the intention of killing Fett in mind."
All three former sidekicks widened their eyes in confusion and shock, unable to think that one of their own will willfully disregard all the training and discipline to be a hero. Kaldur stepped forward, standing next to Robin to address Batman directly.
"With all due respect Batman, Red Arrow had an untrustworthy relationship with Starkiller from the beginning. Considering that he insists that there is still a mole on the Team, it is reasonable to assume that he purposefully wants our faith in Galen shaken." Kaldur spoke, with Robin feeling pride at the growth his Atlantean friend achieved being leader.
Kid Flash, still in slight shock from what Red Arrow had to say about Starkiller, also spoke up. "I agree. Roy's been kind of a jerk to Galen from the start." The speedster spoke up before turning his head to the side with his arms crossed, his green eyes suddenly feeling heavy with guilt. "Then again, I'm one to talk considering I spi-" Noticing that his mouth was running faster than his brain in typical speedster fashion, Kid Flash's eyes widen and immediately ceased talking, realizing he almost spilled the beans on his secret.
Kaldur acknowledged the sudden shift in behavior with a raised brow but said nothing. Robin, however took glances from the now panicked Wally to his mentor, who the Boy Wonder read from body language was irritated at what the red head was about to say. Turning his attention directly to his friend, Robin addressed the speedster directly. "KF, what were you about to say?" The Boy Wonder asked.
With everyone's attention on him, Kid Flash began fidgeting in his seat, doing everything he can to look anywhere but the three of them and mumbling incoherent responses under his breath. Luckily for the red head, the Dark Knight cleared the air.
"Shortly after Starkiller's arrival to the Cave, I assigned Kid Flash an objective to report on any change or new information regarding his abilities, confirmation of his amnesia, etcetera." Batman explained honestly, sparing an annoyed glance to the speedster that he revealed what was supposed to be a confidential assignment.
Taken aback, both Aqualad and Robin glance between the two of them with more shock than Red Arrow's comments. "What?" Kaldur asked quietly, his pale eyes widening in surprise.
Robin, however, was less composed. "Seriously?!" The Boy Wonder shouted, his head twisting in direction from his mentor to his ashamed and flushed friend repeatedly for a few seconds. Blowing the bangs out of his face with annoyance and anger, Robin walked forward to Batman. "You got KF to spy on a member of the Team for months now without telling anyone on the Team? Not even to me, your own partner?!" The young hero inadvertently screamed out that last part, and despite Robin doing all he can to compose himself, a tone of betrayal seeped in his voice.
Once more, Robin stared at his mentor's cowl, the frown on the older man's face being one of the miniscule, physical ways mentor and apprentice spoke without words. This frown being 'I'll explain more in the Batcave ' as well as being more apologetic than previous frowns. The almost unseen gesture seemed to work with Robin giving a brief exhale and regained his composure. With the Boy Wonder calmed down, the Dark Knight resumed command of the conversation.
"Sense we are on this topic, I suggest the both of you sit down." Batman addressed Aqualad and Robin, gesturing his gloved hand to seats next to Kid Flash. "We have much to discuss."
Mount Justice December 8th 1630 hours
"Recognized Chloe Sullivan, A-0-4."
The blonde teen blinked her eyes as she entered the mission room in Mount Justice, the zeta tube echoing her arrival. Chloe gave a glance towards the teleportation device that just transported her and slightly shivered. Clearly, she still needed time to get used to the device before noticing that the Team wasn't present in this room and began to walk through the hallway to find them. More specifically, wanting to talk with Superboy.
The events at Cadmus almost two weeks ago still replay in the young teen's mind everyday, most specifically learning the truth about Conner's half-human origins. Chloe wanted to talk to the half-Kryptonian, wondering how he's taking the news. Unfortunately, coming home past midnight that day didn't give Chloe any favors.
The blonde winces in memory as her family screamed at her to the heavens for coming home that late and missing Thanksgiving. It didn't help that her dad got very mad with her phone being broken, thanks Luthor, who tried calling her all night. And such her punishment was being grounded for two weeks, with chores assigned to her. Luckily her father was impressed by how well Chloe did her assigned work and decided to end her being grounded today. And a good thing too, the blonde teen wanting to talk to Conner as soon as she had the chance.
Soon enough, the sound of voices coming from the kitchen was an indication that she was going the right way as Chloe stopped from where the hallway ended and the kitchen began. Curious, Chloe poked her head out to see the commotion inside.
M'gann was wearing an apron and mitts, happily baking cookies in the oven as she watched over the pastries. Conner was with Wolf, the superclone petting the mutant animal in the corner of the room. Artemis was by herself, leaning against the wall with her arms crossed and clearly frowning about something. Jason, Tora, and Zatanna all sat on the couch, with the two girls becoming more amused and exasperated at what the fire conjurer is saying.
"How about 'let's turn up the heat?'" Jason asked to the magician and the cryomancer.
Zatanna rolled her eyes. "Pass." She deadpanned as Tora giggled at Jason's disappointed look.
"Okay… how about, 'this fight's heating up?'" Jason added, but became even more annoyed at Tora's giggling.
"What's the American saying again? It's… 'cheesy' yes?" The Scandinavian girl commented, trying to control herself as Zatanna laughed slightly as well and Jason even more determined to think of something better.
"I got it!" Jason exclaimed, snapping his fingers with a proud smile. "How about this? 'Flame on!'" The pyrokinetic offered and grinned at both of the girl's approving smiles, feeling proud he nailed it.
Conner, who was busy petting Wolf but was overhearing their conversation, interrupted. "I'm pretty sure that's taken." The Kryptonian stated, as Jason sighed and slumped down on the couch.
"Man, all the good stuff's already thought of." The dark skinned boy commented in a defeated tone, with Zatanna giving the fire conjurer a look of sympathy.
"Sorry Jason, even with catchphrases, it's hard to think of something original these days. Just look at Hollywood." The dark haired magician offered her two cents as Jason groaned in displeasure and Tora still smiling at his overreacted lamentation. With the commotion dying down, Chloe made herself present to the young heroes.
"Hey guys." Chloe greeted with a friendly smile and a wave, the group all turning their heads to smile at the newcomer.
"Hi Chloe." M'gann greeted warmly, a welcoming smile stretching across her emerald skinned face. Conner and Wolf walked forward to greet the blonde teen as the mutant animal began to nuzzle against Chloe's jacket.
The young reporter in training smiled at the animal's gesture for affection. "Hey buddy." She whispered, gently rubbing the animal's hair through his mane. Chloe looked from the dog to Conner, who he too seemed pleased that she's here.
"Wolf likes you." Conner commented, noticing how the near always ferocious battle tank of an animal is acting like any other household dog.
Chloe grinned before releasing her hand from the mutant animal as she turned her attention to Conner. "Well, I am a great person to be around." The blonde bragged as the Kryptonian rolled his eyes.
"Don't flatter yourself. You're annoying enough as is." Conner teased as Chloe mockingly huffs in indignation before breaking out into a smile.
"So, how you've been big guy?" The blonde teen asked, her tone becoming softer than before.
Conner sighs. "I'm about as well as I can be. Then again, I'm lucky as is." The taller teen responded, his blue eyes glancing back to M'gann who is preoccupied with the baking.
Chloe's smile remains on her face, noticing his direction. "That's great to hear." She responded as her attention turned to Artemis, who still leaned against the wall. "Hi Artemis." She greeted to the archer, whose head turned at the mention of her name.
The Eurasian girl gave a weak grin. "Hey." She responded briefly before turning away, her eyes meeting the floor as her grin turned back into a frown.
Chloe's smile lessened as she gazed at the archer with concern. Noticing the look on her face, Zatanna spoke up. "Don't take it personally, Chloe. The other day there was a mission that didn't go well. Artemis… is taking it a bit hard." The dark haired magician said, speaking from the couch with Chloe giving the archer an apologetic glance.
"Oh alright." Chloe responded, wanting to remain silent instead of trying to make the older blonde awkward over what happened. Looking around, the blonde's investigative instincts kicked in. "Hey wait, where's the rest of the guys?" She asked, noticing the absence of a certain scarlet haired speedster.
Jason, who was busy flipping through channels on the TV, responded. "Robin, KF, and Aqualad went to some League meeting with Batman, or something. Galen went out for a bit, don't know when he'll be back." The fire conjurer answered, clicking on the remote repeatedly and Chloe nodding at the information.
Amidst the conversation, Artemis reached in her jacket and pulled an electronic device slightly. Though she quickly placed it back in her pocket, her eyes widened slightly what was on the electronic screen. Standing to her full attention, the archer addressed all the young heroes in the room. "I should get going, it's getting late." The blonde announced her departure with most of the young heroes seeming disappointed.
"Are you sure you want to go? The cookies should be done in a few minutes." M'gann asked, giving her most pleading look to the archer.
Artemis looked back at the Martian with an apologetic grin. "Sorry M'gann, I have to catch up on some homework. But save me a cookie for tomorrow 'kay?" The archer compromised and the green alien nodded at her request. Before walking out, the blonde addressed the other teens one, last time. "I'll catch you guys later." She added before turning her heel and walked towards the Zeta tube.
When her footsteps were out of earshot, Jason shook his head. "Dang, Artemis is taking the mission pretty hard." The pyrokinetic commented.
Zatanna turned her head to the dark skinned teen. "Give her time. She'll get better. It was just a mistake." The magician reasoned.
Tora shrugged her shoulders. "Maybe you should tell Kid Flash that, Zatanna. He's still angry with her." The ice conjurer suggested as she resumed watching a sit-com with Jason.
Seeing this as her chance, Chloe addressed Conner by a poke to his shoulder. "Hey, my uncle got me a new phone. Want to talk about it?" Normally, the Kryptonian wouldn't really care about tech talk. That's more up Robin and Kid Flash's alley. But, Conner noticed Chloe had a vague but different inflection for the word 'it' in her question. And the super clone didn't need M'gann's mind link to know what Chloe really asked. Looking around, Conner sees that M'gann was checking the cookies and Jason, Zatanna, and Tora watching TV. With the other teens preoccupied, Conner turns his attention back to Chloe.
"Okay, outside in the hallway." He replied quietly, the two of them leaving the kitchen though both didn't notice M'gann watching them with a backward glance as she checked the pastries. When they were far enough away not to be heard from the kitchen, Conner gazed back at Chloe. "What do you want to talk about?" The super clone asked, his voice curt.
Chloe exhaled quietly as her emerald eyes met Conner's blue ones, her playful smile from earlier gone. "How are you holding up since DC?" She asked, her tone filled with concern.
Conner sighed. "I don't know. Sometimes, I wish I stayed for Thanksgiving. Match, Luthor being half my genes, and him shutting me down with words…" The Kryptonian paused, clenching his fist before calming himself and resuming his train of thought. "…It's like a bad dream." He concluded.
The young blonde teen nodded at his words. "I'm sorry you feel like that. If it's any consolation, my uncle would have his tailor design Luthor's prison jumpsuit himself if he didn't destroy my phone." Chloe added, hoping to cheer the taller teen up. It seemed to work, as Conner had a miniscule grin imagining Luthor being locked up at Belle Rev. Seeing the Kryptonian a little better, Chloe cracked a grin too. "And besides, at least you have friends here, your real family. Not Luthor and his crappy shields." And the mention of the shields, Conner didn't meet Chloe in the eyes, turning slightly away. He didn't see Chloe's eyes nearly bulge out of her skull.
"Seriously?" Chloe whispered that almost turned into a scream. After looking around the corner to make sure the other heroes didn't hear her, she resumed her outrage towards Conner. "You kept that stuff? Even after he used you to locate Match and the genomorphs?" The blonde teen asked, not understanding at all why he would keep them.
The Kryptonian stopped her before more questions hurled his way. "Look Chloe, I removed the tracer from the tins. They're safe, and besides, I can use them. I can help the Team more, I can be like…" Conner suddenly paused, having a lump in his throat. Swallowing, he finished "…like Superman." When he finished his sentence, it was nearly unhearable."
Hearing the last part of his sentence stopped Chloe from asking more questions. Looking at Conner, the blonde knew he had good intentions. But there was a glaring problem with those shields. "Conner… look, those shields may give you a boost but there's a serious downside. You're more angry when you have a shield on your arm. When you were pummeling Match, I screamed at you multiple times to stop." She paused, noticing Conner's eyes staring at her before continuing. "When you have one on, you don't think clearly." The blonde reasoned with a soft tone, hoping the Kryptonian can understand.
Conner's eyes narrow at the smaller teen. "I saved you with those shields, Chloe. If I hadn't, Match could've—" He was about to say more but both him and the blonde turn to see M'gann a few feet away from them.
"The cookies are done. I just wanted to know if you want any." The Martian offered, looking at the two of them with a curious glance.
A master of quick replies after years of being caught hacking into government computers, Chloe immediately responded. "Great! I love chocolate chip!" She exclaimed with delight, walking towards the kitchen. However before she entered the room, the young reporter gave a quick glance to the Kryptonian. "Thanks Conner. We should talk about my new phone some other time." The blonde added, quickly saving themselves from being caught before entering to grab a fresh one from the countertop.
Chuckling awkwardly, Conner rubbed the back of his head. "I guess I'm a little hungry." The super clone commented, walking towards the kitchen.
"Conner?" M'gann's voice rang out, stopping the taller teen in his tracks. "Is everything okay?" The green alien asked her boyfriend.
Knowing he couldn't look at her almost caramel colored eyes without feeling pangs of guilt, Conner resumed walking. "Yeah, why wouldn't I be?" He responded, hoping his voice didn't give out any indication that he is hiding something. As he walked in the kitchen to grab a cookie, M'gann watched from the hallway, the Martian's smile lessening than what it once was earlier.
Gotham City December 8th 1645 hours
The clouded skies of winter covered Gotham, the cold air taking away whatever warmth the Sun provided earlier. Light began to dim, with sunset being more close by the hour than anytime this year. On one rooftop in particular, a lone figure stood, gazing upon the crime-ridden city and ignoring the surrounding cold.
That figure was Galen.
The Force-user did tell Batman the truth… from a certain point of view. He did take the zeta tube to New York City, he was truthful about that. However, at the first opportunity, Galen took the next train from New York to Gotham, the amnesiac teen having a task in mind to complete. Ever since meeting Fett, Galen tried looking up any information in regards to find the elusive bounty hunter. To his disappointment, the only evidence that pointed to authentic appearances prior to the mission was Gotham. If it was Galen's choice, the Force-user would have never wanted to come here for his search, knowing full well this is Batman's territory and the Dark Knight is distrustful of him at best. But, Gotham is the only lead he has.
As he stood on the rooftop, clad in his hero uniform with his hood down, Galen lowered his head and sighed, his breath visible in the cold air. The young man hated himself for withholding his true intentions to Artemis, lying to her straight in the face. Then again, Artemis lied during the mission in New Orleans among other things… and Conner and M'gann are hiding some things of their own, with Galen knowing the Martian's. There have been a lot of secrets and lies being said already, and the Force-user acknowledging the blatant irony of hiding his private investigation while lamenting.
To be honest, Galen was going to say something to Canary about himself mostly before Batman called everyone in the Cave. But then again, would the bird-themed heroine believe him about the Force or the visitation of his ghostly father? Would the Team believe him? The Force-user needed more answers, at least to explain to everyone, and Fett is his best bet. Wherever Galen came from, Fett came from the same place. And whether or not the bounty hunter's damning words about him are true, the bounty hunter is all he has. Artemis, Batman, the Team… they'll understand. Galen needs to find Fett, to get the answers he desperately needs ever since awakening in this world and to end his nightmares when he sleeps.
In the midst of his thoughts, Galen's focus shifted back to reality as on the streets below, two police vehicles speed on by, their klaxons blaring down the road.
Pulling his hood over his head, Starkiller intends to follow the vehicles. Perhaps Fett revealed himself again in Gotham. Before leaving, the Force-user paused, still wearing his backpack despite changing into his hero uniform. After a moment's indecision on to leave it behind, the hero continued on following the police cars, his backpack still fitting snugly on his person.
The two cop cars stop by a closed alley, with four officers exiting their vehicles and chasing down the criminal into the inclosing space, knowing they have the perp trapped with semi-automatic pistols at the ready. However, upon reaching the end of the alley, the officers only looked in confusion. No one was here, and no escape ladders from the buildings surrounding the alley were pulled down.
As the officers look around the alley in confusion, a lone figure watches them on the roof from across the city. A female figure in top physical condition wearing a skintight dark leather suit with matching boots, customized gloves, and a leather helmet with two protrusions on each end of the top of the helmet to look like cat ears.
Placing orange-tinted goggles upwards from her eyes, the notorious thief Catwoman watches the officer's dumbfounded confusion with a satisfied grin. "Hook, line, and sinker." The feline themed thief remarked, placing her now coiled whip back to her left hip, the tool used as her escape from the cops in the alley by whipping a pipe from a nearby building and using the retractable claws from her customized gloves to scale the walls and flee.
Walking across the rooftop, Catwoman holds the object of her desires in her right hand, a very rare Russian faberge egg outfitted with red, blue, and purple jewels. Initially, the item was held for auction tomorrow in the upper eastside of the city, the auction house no doubt to be filled with the richest of Gotham. But, then again why should a bunch of snooty, rich folk offer thousands and millions for it when Catwoman could get it for free?
Tracing her finger across the item, her emerald eyes shined at her latest catch. No doubt this will make her a pretty penny on the black market. Suddenly Catwoman felt the wind shift slightly behind her, her musings about the cash cut short. She wasn't alone. Placing the egg down to her right side of her hips with an attachable hook on her suit, the cat-burglar palmed the handle of her whip, expecting a certain bat and his annoying bird sidekick. When she turned, she felt surprised she stared down the hero she heard about from the news, Starkiller.
The Force-user followed the police, hoping it was Boba Fett. Though instead, he is currently glaring at Catwoman, one of Batman's enemies. Starkiller narrowed his eyes at the thief under his hood, a frown forming on the lowered half of his face. "You're not who I'm looking for…" The young man muttered, not bothering to hide the disappointment in his voice.
Catwoman took his comment as her chance to distract. "Oh? Does this mean we'll go our separate ways?" The thief asked innocently as she has a firm grip on her whip's handle.
Starkiller's frown deepens as he notices the jeweled item by her hip. "You're going to hand that egg and yourself to the police." The Force-user demanded, prompting the feline thief to retort.
"And if I don't?" She asked, a dangerous glint in her eyes with her body spring loaded to move at any second.
Starkiller's hand hovered above his lightsaber, a clear warning for the thief to not escalate things any further. "I'll stop you." The hero replied, his voice filled with conviction while trying to sound as intimidating as possible.
The cat burglar merely chuckled. "Nice Batman voice, hero. Still needs some work." She quipped, immediately launching at the young man with the front end of her whip to trip Starkiller's feet from under him, the air cracking at the weapon's sound. With quick reflexes, the Force-user jumped over the whip, activating his lightsaber with the intent to disarm the thief of her weapon with a downwards chop. Realizing she didn't have enough time to pull her whip back and strike again, Catwoman coiled her whip in her hand and rolled to the side, avoiding the young hero's incoming strike. Realizing she can't fight with the egg on her person lest it breaks, the feline thief quickly threw a bola at Starkiller in an attempt to slow him down. The weapon wrapped around the young man's legs, causing him to trip and fall on the ceiling with an annoyed grunt.
Catwoman grinned as the Force-user glared at her. "Sorry kiddo, better luck next time." The thief remarked, giving Starkiller a lazy salute before leaping over to the next building with the aid of her whip. Unwilling to let himself be beaten by a glorified cat burglar, Starkiller used his lightsaber to cut the wires around his legs and freed himself. Using the Force, the young man jumped high in the air, landing on the opposing rooftop with a forward roll and continued chasing Catwoman.
Seeing if she's still being pursued, Catwoman glanced behind her for a moment and frowned in annoyance. He's persistent, I'll give him that. She thought to herself before pulling another helpful trap from one of her pockets in her suit. The kid has spirit but she's given more experienced heroes like Batman a more difficult time. From what she can tell, he's still new in the hero gig.
Before using her whip to grab onto one of the gutters of the next building, Catwoman throws a handful of miniature caltrops on the ground behind her before turning back around and with her whip's aid, swings over to the next building. Seeing the sharpened metal on the ground, Starkiller jumps above them, avoiding the dangerous trap as he continues his pursuit.
The chase of cat and mouse went on for a few minutes, both of them jumping over ledges and running across rooftops as a means to get away and pursue, respectively. It is clear to Catwoman that losing Starkiller wasn't an option; he clearly had the stamina and the speed to keep up. The only choice she has to keep the egg and get away is to beat him. Though, that laser sword of his will be quite the problem. Instead, she'll have to fight him her way… on her terms.
Seeing a rooftop with lines of laundry being placed on wires as well as outside vents to hide in, Catwoman uses her whip to swing to the building. Starkiller followed and with the Force's aid, landed on the building with ease. Clothes fluttered to the wind as the Force-user looked around to see where the conniving cat burglar is hiding. He knew she couldn't have gotten far, using his lightsaber to illuminate his path as whatever light slowly disappears from the sky. It didn't take long for the Force-user to stumble upon the faberge egg placed seemingly on the floor in the middle of the roof. It didn't take a genius to know that Starkiller stumbled into a trap.
Suddenly, Catwoman pounced at Starkiller from one of the vents, the feline thief knocking him to the ground and disarming him of his lightsaber, the weapon cluttering to the side as she pinned the young man on his back. With her retractable claws out from her customized gloves, Catwoman prepared to strike the young hero in the face, ending the fight. However, the amnesiac hero refused to give up, planting a knee to her abdomen before grabbing her shoulders and flipping her off of him. The thief gracefully landed back to the ground with an Olympic style somersault as Starkiller got up to his feet, dusting himself off.
Both hero and thief stared each other down, waiting for the other to make the first move. Catwoman, slightly panting from both the running and their quick exchange, spoke first. "You know what, I'm starting to think you're just as annoying as Bats." The cat burglar remarked, the amusement earlier in her voice completely gone and replaced with irritation.
Starkiller ignored the insult. "This could be a lot easier if you just give up." The Force-user replied and frowned when Catwoman starts laughing.
"Yeah, okay. I'll just go to prison and think about what I've done like the bad girl I am." She replied sarcastically before shifting her attention to the faberge egg sitting on the roof a few feet away from them. "That egg will get me a lot on the black market." She stated before looking back to the amnesiac hero. "In case you haven't noticed kid, Gotham's the Wild West. The strong live in their big towers while the weak live in the alleys and on the streets. In this kind of city, you need all the money you can get."
Starkiller merely scoffed. "Then you should've moved out and got a job." He quipped, using his left hand to call his lightsaber to him. Catwoman, noticing the Force-user's telekinetic pull, pulled out her whip and lashed at his left hand. Exclaiming in pain, Starkiller retracted his hand as his lightsaber cluttered to the side. He didn't have time to use telekinesis again as he avoided three swings from Catwoman's whip, all three strikes having the intent to trip and ensnare. Jumping over a strike that attempted to grab him by the legs, Starkiller raised his hand and launched a Force push against the cat burglar. Eyes widening, Catwoman felt herself get blasted away by an unseen force, sending her flying back to the ground with a pained grunt as her whip was sent feet away from her.
Undeterred, Catwoman unsheathed her retractable claws and pounced at the hero. Seeing her strike, Starkiller quickly avoided her attack, metallic claws missing mere inches away from his face. Unafraid that he's disarmed, Starkiller counter attacked, sending a flurry of left and right crosses to drive her back. During their exchange, the feline thief restarted a conversation. "So, who are you looking for anyway?" She casually asked, as if they were having a normal conversation while dodging a punch from the Force-user.
Starkiller's mouth forms into a tight line. "Boba Fett. Heard of him?" He tersely replied, using his elbow to block a high kick aiming at his head.
Catwoman's eyes widen slightly in recognition. "The guy who beat Batman? Why do you want him?" She asked, before grabbing Starkiller's shoulders and using him as a base jump to vault over. Before she could land and attack the young hero from behind, Starkiller reacted first. Turning quickly, the Force-user raised one hand and a torrent of lightning shot out from his fingertips, striking the cat burglar. Although Catwoman's leather suit can absorb most of the electricity, Starkiller's connection to the Force allowed him to up the voltage though he held back to not potentially kill or give external damage. Eventually, his Force imbued lightning overpowered her suit's insular nature with the cat burglar screaming in pain. With her immobilized, Starkiller then raised his lightning striking hand toward a wall bordering the roof. He then ended his lightning attack before sending a moderately powerful telekinetic push, sending the cat burglar to the wall. The infamous thief landed against the bricks with a soft thud, slumping to the floor exhausted and panting wildly, with residue smoke from his lightning strike floating away from her body.
Groaning lightly, Catwoman's green eyes looked up to see Starkiller leveling his lightsaber blade at her, the victor of this fight. "What I want with Fett is my business." The Force-user finally answered, his unseen eyes looking to see if the cat burglar is thinking of running. After a moment of examining the thief to see if she's defeated, he then deactivated his lightsaber and placed the weapon back on his belt. "And you're going to the authorities." He proclaimed, his voice offering no exceptions.
Using the brick wall behind her for support, Catwoman picked herself back up. "Wait…" She requested, prompting Starkiller to eye her curiously. "…I can help you find Fett." She finished, standing to her full height and seemingly okay after the lightning attack.
Starkiller is doubtful about her claim but decides to listen regardless. "And what makes you say that? He could be anywhere, not just in Gotham." The Force sensitive reasoned.
Catwoman smirked. "I have friends in the streets. Anything interesting going on, I would hear about it. I heard from a few days ago that Fett is having a deal with Black Mask… today." She emphasized the last part, getting Starkiller's complete and upmost attention. "When I say I can find your guy, I'm not joking." She added, acknowledging that she herself is Starkiller's only chance to find the elusive bounty hunter as evident by that self-satisfied smirk still placed on her face.
The amnesiac hero stood in silence, contemplating what the feline thief said. Having a criminal help him… this is very gray territory. So gray that if Batman found out, he would no doubt use this as an excuse to bench him from the Team permanently. After a moment of hesitation, the young hero spoke. "What do you want in return? Judging by your profession, I'm guessing this favor isn't free." Starkiller replied, noticing the glint appearing in Catwoman's emerald eyes.
"You're catching on." The thief replied. "It's simple. You scratch my back, I scratch yours. I help you find Fett, I get off scot-free. No cops, no prison." She explained, closing the distance between them until they were mere inches apart from each other. "So… do we have a deal?" She asked, extending her gloved hand and knowing full well that she is Starkiller's hope to find the bounty hunter.
The young man considered his options. Sensing her mental fortitude, he ruled out using the mind trick. And using lightning and telekinesis to force an answer out of her isn't an option. Being a member of the Team, torture wasn't an option. Especially since this night is morally questionable already. He couldn't even imagine how the Team, especially Artemis, would think of him if he used his powers for torture. With a defeated sigh, Starkiller accepted her gloved hand with his own, nodding silently.
Catwoman's grinned remained on her face. "Good choice." She complimented, ending the handshake and proceeding onwards. "Come on." She requested, already going in a direction in mind.
"Wait." Starkiller exclaimed, stopping the feline thief from continuing. Looking at the still unharmed faberge egg on the roof, the Force-user continued. "There's one more thing to do."
After combing through the alley ten times, the officers finally gave up their search. Walking towards their vehicles with the intent to inform the commissioner about failing to catch the thief, Gotham's boys in blue were surprised to see the faberge egg sitting harmlessly on the hood of one of the police cruisers.
Starkiller and Catwoman watched the astonished officers from a rooftop across the street, though only one of them was pleased to return the object back to the authorities. "There goes this month's rent." The feline thief lamented, with the amnesiac hero rolling his eyes at her overreaction.
"Just be glad that you're not down there with the egg." Starkiller said, turning his head to the thief. "Unless you're lying to me." He added, his voice carrying a warning edge to it.
Catwoman merely chuckled as a response. "You need to start trusting me more often hero." She replied, before turning around. "Come on, we need to get moving." Looking at the police for a moment longer, Starkiller turned and followed the cat burglar south in Gotham.
As they journeyed in the city, it didn't take long before Catwoman started talking again. "I wanted to say something earlier… but what's with the backpack?" The feline thief asked, pointing a finger at said object fitting snugly on Starkiller's back.
The Force-user contemplated an answer for a moment. "It has my clothes." He replied simply, not bothering to lie.
Catwoman stared at Starkiller with a bemused expression before cracking a grin. "You're definitely something else than the bat." She added, moving slightly slower so the young man could catch up. When he was a few feet closer, the cat themed criminal had a mischievous glint in her eyes. "I think you take the hero gig way too serious kid." She drawled, unzipping the top of her suit a little bit for Starkiller to see some skin.
Realizing that she's doing this to make him uncomfortable, the Force-user looked away, forever grateful his hood covered his now red-colored face. "You aren't the first criminal with a cat fetish trying to distract me." Starkiller retorted, his voice being the only thing not bothered by the thief's flirting.
Catwoman huffed in indignation, zipping her suit back up completely. "I take it you met Cheshire." The thief said, her tone neutral now that the Force-user isn't being fun.
Starkiller nodded before turning back to the thief. "You met her too?"
The feline thief winced. "Only once." She replied briefly as the amnesiac teen considered her answer.
"I'm not surprised. All you criminals are best buddies." Starkiller answered with Catwoman shooting a glare at his direction.
"Let's get one thing straight, hero…" She began, raising her voice enough for the Force-user to be surprised shift in tone. "I'm a thief. I just like to get pretty and shiny things from rich people who are too bored with their lives. Cheshire's a killer. I don't want anyone's blood on my conscience." The feline criminal reprimanded, as the Force-user stared at the burglar with surprise at how defensive she is. Realizing this too, Catwoman re-focused on the task at hand. "This way." She muttered, continuing to traverse across the rooftops with Starkiller following close behind, his opinion on the cat burglar slowly beginning to change.
Hall of Justice December 8th 1710 hours
For almost an hour, Robin and Aqualad sat in silence as Batman revealed all the reports Kid Flash sent to the Dark Knight during Galen's early days on the Team. Although Robin calmed down substantially than earlier, the Boy Wonder was still a little angry that his mentor and his best friend! did this little operation behind not just his back, but the entire Team too.
Totally. Not. Asterous.
After Batman concluded, the two turned to Kid Flash, who for most of the hour was spent squirming his seat and doing everything he can from bolting. Even with his uniform on, Robin could see the redhead's face turning as scarlet as his hair. Eventually, after another moment, the dam flooded.
"I'M SORRY OKAY!" Kid Flash screamed, finally bursting out as he flung out his arms before looking the most apologetic the Boy Wonder ever saw from his best friend. "Ishouldn'thavetakentheassingment, IwasjustjealousofGalenandIwantedtomakesurethathewasn'tabadguyorwhatever. YouguysaremybestfriendsandI'msosorryIhidethisfromeveryone. Pleasecanyoueverforgiveme?"
It took a moment for both Robin and Aqualad to comprehend the speedster's extremely hyper fast apology. By the end of it, the scarlet haired speedster looked at them both with pleading eyes before tugging his air in agitated puffs.
Batman spoke once again for the speedster. "If it is any consolation, after Kid Flash's assignment with Starkiller to deliver a new heart to Queen Perdita, he spoke with me privately saying that he does not want to continue his assignment." The Dark Knight spoke for the speedster's defense, with the World's Greatest Detective addressing Wally directly. "Kid Flash, I apologize for placing you in this predicament." Batman said, with the red head looking back in surprise at how rare the Defender of Gotham issues apologies. Batman then turned to his ward and the Atlantean. "Whatever anger you have, direct them at me. I have given Kid Flash this assignment and encouraged his distrustful behavior towards Starkiller."
After hearing what was probably one of the most sincere explanations Batman has ever said in front of others that didn't involve Alfred, Robin felt whatever anger he had left dissipate. Don't get the Boy Wonder wrong, he's still peeved that the two had this assignment without the Team's knowledge, but he understood their intentions. Truth be told, Galen was an unknown who magically popped into their lives, in the Cave no less. Batman and Wally did this as a means to protect the larger Team as a whole.
Looking to his leader, the dark-skinned Atlantean was thinking the same thing as Aqualad turned to Batman. "We understand that you had good intentions in mind…" Kaldur spoke before looking to the speedster. "…And yes Kid, me and Robin accept your apology." Aqualad said, speaking on behalf for him and the Boy Wonder.
Exhaling a gigantic sigh of relief, Kid Flash looked to his friends thankfully. "Thanks guys. I really am sorry. You won't believe how hard it was to keep this in." The science wiz spoke sincerely as Robin formed a sympathetic grin.
"It's okay KF, me and Kaldur are both whelmed now." Robin replied to his friend, as Kid Flash grew a small smile that the Boy Wonder is back at making up words again. "Just… don't do it again." Robin added, giving a glance to both his mentor and his best friend.
Aqualad nodded. "Agreed." He said to Robin's insight before turning back to Batman. "It would be best that we inform the Team about this assignment at a later date. Due to Artemis' mistake on the recent mission, information such as this would only add salt to an already open wound." The Atlantean concluded, with the Dark Knight wordlessly nodding at Kaldur's request.
Gotham City December 8th 1730 hours
Catwoman leads Starkiller deep into downtown Gotham, the increasingly darkening skies matching the seeding underbelly in this area of the city. For Starkiller, it was like walking into a separate city in and of itself. The streets look more decrepit, the buildings are more rundown, and there are fewer people walking the streets compared to the more rich center several blocks back. The Force-user really wonders how Batman can manage such a broken, splattered mess of a city…
His musings were cut short when Catwoman suddenly drops to street level, reaching a corner section of a certain block secluded from most of Gotham. Following her lead, Starkiller lands on the street as well, only to gaze in confusion. In front of them both is a rundown looking bar, with hard rock blaring from the inside. On the outside, the light's advertising the establishment's name, The Desolate Dustbin, blinked off and on repeatedly with an obvious need for a repair. Looking at the building, the Force-user raised a brow under his hood. "Fett is in there?" He asked, his voice filled with disbelief.
The feline thief slightly fidgeted, as if knowing how the teen will react next. "No, he's not." She said truthfully, trying to ignore Starkiller's surprised look directly at her. "But...!" She paused, stopping the young man from immediately calling her a liar. "I know a waitress in there. She's a friend of mine. Anytime gangs come through here, she hears rumors. I'm sure she knows where your boy's at tonight." The cat thief explained before walking towards the establishment. She didn't get far as Starkiller grabbed her by the arm.
"You promised me you'd find Fett." Starkiller said, the Force-user becoming more agitated than reassured.
Catwoman frowned at his response. "And I will." She emphasized, pulling her arm away from the young man's grip. "Anything going on tonight, one of Mask's thugs probably came here for a drink. And my friend will know about it." The cat burglar explained, though the amnesiac teen remained hesitant. Seeing his stubbornness, Catwoman rolled her eyes. "Look, I know you're really trying to be the best boy scout you can, but you need to trust me on this."
Starkiller narrowed his unseen eyes. "How do I know you won't escape through the backdoor?" He asked, still hesitant to trust one of Gotham's most notorious criminals.
Catwoman gave a smirk. "Because I don't like owing goody two-shoe heroes a favor." She responded. "I'll take you to Fett. You just need faith for little, old me."
After hearing that last sentence, Starkiller scoffed. "That isn't really assuring." He deadpanned, the two walking towards the entrance.
"Just a heads-up, a lot of bad guys, mostly thugs, like to drink here. If you get 'em pissed, they'll try to stab you." Catwoman warned, opening the entrance door.
"I've faced worse." The Force-user replied, not intimated by drunken criminals and thinking of much more deadly opponents he's faced on the Team.
Inside, rock music blared everywhere, the band being unfamiliar to the young man. The establishment was a bit crowded, tables being filled with what Starkiller guessed to be criminals. The patrons are drinking alcoholic beverages with waitresses bringing them even more beverages to them. At the bar, the barkeep is busy cleaning glasses when he notices the newcomers walk in. "Hey Kyle. You brought a friend?" He asked.
Catwoman retained a smile. "Just showing him around Gotham. Is Izzy working tonight?"
The man pointed a finger to the kitchen. "Her shift just ended. You might catch her before she leaves." The barkeep recommended as the feline thief gave the man a thankful grin.
"Appreciate it Joe." She said to the man, who returned to cleaning the glasses at the bar. Turning to Starkiller, she says "Wait here, my friend's in the back." The feline thief instructs to the amnesiac teen.
"And what do you want me do?" He asked, feeling uncomfortable being in an establishment such as this one.
Catwoman shrugged. "Get a drink, make new friends, have some fun." She suggested before turning her heel and began walking towards the kitchen. On her way, a large, portly man hollered from a table in the corner.
"Hey kitty! How much will it take for you to give me a good time?" He drunkenly asked, breaking out into rambunctious laughter.
Catwoman didn't even look at him. "For you Willy, about ten times Bruce Wayne's net worth." She coolly replied, the insult taking the man's perverted smile off his face as his drunken friends laugh at his embarrassment. With the cat burglar not seen, Starkiller took a seat at the bar, which earned a raised brow from Joe the barkeep.
Realizing he's staring at him, Starkiller looked at the menu. "One sparkling water, please." He requested as Joe wordlessly went to the mini fridge and pulled out a frost, covered bottle. As the barkeep filled Starkiller's glass, a very unkempt looking man sat next to the hero.
"Want to buy some heroine?" He asked, pulling out a bag of said drug from his worn-out jacket.
Starkiller took a sip from his drink before waving his hand in front of the drug dealer's face. "You don't want to sell me heroine." He commanded, the disheveled man nodding at his words.
"I don't want to sell you heroine." He robotically repeated, placing the bag back into his coat pocket.
Starkiller waved his hand again. "You want to go home and rethink your life." The Force-user added, the disheveled man already standing from his seat.
"I want to go home and rethink my life." The now former drug dealer exclaimed, exiting the bar as the Force-user grew a smirk while drinking his water.
In the backroom, Isabella Costello placed her waitress apron in her locker, already dressed and ready to go home.
"Hey Izzy." A familiar voice greeted the waitress, who turned to see the notorious cat thief standing in the doorway with a friendly grin.
Isabella sighed. "Selina." She greeted briefly, as she closes her locker. "What do you want? I had a long day today with a nice shower waiting for me at my apartment." She asked tiredly, as evident by the bags under her eyes.
The thief walked closer to the waitress, her grin gone and her face all serious. "In the bar, I'm helping this hero out, said he's looking for the guy who took down the bat a few weeks back." She explained, as Isabella's eyes slightly widen in interest. "A lot of people come through here. I figured you have to know at least something."
At that last statement, the waitress gave a brief chortle. "A lot of bad guys come through here, you have to be more specific kitten." She replied, placing the tips she made this day in her jacket pocket.
Catwoman sighed. "Word on the street is there's a deal tonight between Fett and Black Mask. Heard anything about it?" She added, causing the waitress to think over her day.
"At lunch, a couple of Mask's goons came here for a few rounds. I was their server. I didn't hear much, but the deal's happening in a little bit." She explained, looking at her wristwatch. "In a little under an hour."
Her information has Catwoman's undivided attention. "Where?" The thief asked.
The tired woman sighed before looking around to see if anyone is listening. Regardless that no one else is present in the room, Isabella moved closer until she was mere inches away from the thief. "They're meeting in the sewer, a couple of them mentioning that their entrance point is two blocks west from here. They said something of taking the main route in the sewer straight ahead but beyond that, I have no idea." She whispered to the thief as Catwoman smiled.
"Thanks Izzy." The cat burglar replied as the waitress zipped up her jacket.
"Yeah, well consider us even since you helped me paid my bills last month." Isabella replied, having a small smile of her own.
Back at the bar, Starkiller finished his glass as he turned his head to the kitchen. It's been a few minutes and the amnesiac teen felt his patience starting to wear thin. Thoughts of Catwoman ditching him began to cross his mind. He really hoped he didn't make a mistake sitting back here…
His thoughts are interrupted when a rough hand grabbed his shoulder and made him turn to the left. An Asian man began yelling in a language that Starkiller didn't understand, though judging by his tone, he clearly was angry. Not understanding a word just said to him, Starkiller simply turned around. Suddenly, he felt three sharp pokes on his shoulder.
The young hero turned to see an older fair-skinned man joined the other man from before, with Starkiller noticing both men had penguin tattoos on their left arm. "He doesn't like you." The man translated for his friend, though Starkiller isn't intimidated.
"That's his problem." The amnesiac teen retorted, ignoring the two thugs. Unfortunately, his shoulder is grabbed again, forcing the young man to meet the two face to face.
"I don't like you either kid." The other thug snarled. "You better watch yourself, we're wanted men. I was sent to Arkham for ten years." He boasted, though Starkiller's patience is near breaking point.
"You think I'm intimidated by you two?" Starkiller asked, getting out of his seat. "I've faced criminals who can kill you two ten times over. Compared to them, you're a walk in the park." The Force-user stated, clearly not afraid by their threats. His insults however caused the two men to growl threateningly, both of them pulling out their switchblades. Suddenly, the two lunged at the young hero, knives in hand. Fortunately, Starkiller reacted first, sending a powerful telekinetic push that send the two attackers flying to the west wall, collapsing to the floor unconscious.
The rock music suddenly stopped as Starkiller turned to see every patron in the bar staring at him. Some expressions carrying fear, others with disdain. His thoughts were interrupted when heard the sound of a shotgun being loaded at him and turned to see Joe the barkeep aiming the weapon directly at his face. "Out of my bar, freak." Joe ordered, his hands shaking but refusing to aim the gun away.
The entire bar watched in silence, looking to see what Starkiller will do next. Luckily for everyone, Catwoman spoke up. "When I said have some fun, I didn't mean too much fun." She remarked, clearly amused at the situation. Walking to the Force-user, she turned to the nervous barkeep. "It's okay Joe, we're leaving anyway." The feline thief remarked, soothing the already tense atmosphere. Her advice seemed to work, the barkeep lowering his shotgun as Catwoman turns her attention to Starkiller. "I have info about your boy. Come on, we don't have much time." The cat burglar said and walked out of the bar.
Wanting to follow her and find Fett, Starkiller pulled a hundred dollar bill out of his backpack, some of the money Batman gave him to buy clothes and other personal accessories when he first arrived here. He then hands the crumbled bill to Joe. "Sorry about the mess." He said, paying for his drink and the potential damage his telekinesis did to the wall. Closing his backpack, Starkiller walks out of the bar as Catwoman waits for him.
Outside, the Sun is almost out, the dark clouds of winter covering the city in it's cold gaze. Exhaling, the Force-user turned to the thief, who seemed untouched by the chilling breeze. "So, you know where he is?" The young hero asked.
Catwoman retained her confident smirk. "Just keep up." She requested, using her whip to latch unto a nearby gutter as she propelled herself high into the air. Starkiller followed, using the Force to leap high unto the rooftops to keep up. Unbeknownst to either of them, a lone figure watches the two from the shadows before pursuing them from a discreet distance.

Conner enters his bedroom, wanting a little peace and quiet from today. Sitting on his bed, the Kyrptonian thought about what Chloe said to him earlier. Did those shields make him lose control? When he was fighting Match, remembering what happened became a bit fuzzy…
Opening the drawer beside his bed, the superclone takes out the metallic case Luthor gave him. Tracing the symbol of the House of El with one of his fingers, Conner thought about the billionaire's words. "You will be as powerful as Match, as Superman."
Pressing the button, the metallic case slide up, with Conner looking at the Shields inside. On the one hand, having full access to his Kryptonian side… it would no doubt help the Team in a bad situation.
But then again, Chloe had a point. This stuff makes him lose his self-control, becoming no less different than Match. And the last thing Conner wants is to act like a wild animal, like his clone brother. Narrowing his blue eyes at the supplements, Conner closed the lid and placed the small box back in his drawer.
He won't use this stuff… at least not now.
Gotham City December 8th 1805 hours
Starkiller and Catwoman arrived on a rooftop near a lone and quiet street in the downtown Gotham. In the middle of said street, one sewer lid is present on the road, making this Black Mask's entry point. "This is the one?" Starkiller asked as the feline thief nodded in confirmation.
"Yup. Told you hero, need to trust me more. You take the main route when your inside and go straight. Eventually, you'll see your guy." The cat burglar replied, walking away and turning her back on the young man now that their business with each other is done. "A deal's a deal. I showed you where your boy's at, we go our separate ways." Catwoman said, preparing to leave this night behind her.
Starkiller's forehead creased. "Yeah, you lived up to your end." The Force-user stated, before suddenly blasting a powerful telekinetic push at Catwoman's direction. The thief didn't even had a chance to react as the telekinetic wave send to her crashing to a brick wall, sending her to the floor, unconscious. Looking over her with a pang of guilt, he continued. "But you're still a criminal. I can't let you go free." He muttered to the knocked out thief.
Picking her slump body in his arms, Starkiller landed on the street with the lone sewer lid. Seeing a nearby lamppost, the young man placed the unconscious criminal beside it, using her whip to tie her hands around the lamppost in case she wakes up. Heaving a sigh, the Force-user knows that Catwoman differed from most criminals he's faced during missions for the Team. But still, she breaks the law and hurts people to get riches. In this already gray evening, having Catwoman tied up for the authorities after dealing with Fett will put his thoughts in a better place.
The young man then kneeled down and pulled on the lid, grunting slightly to move the heavy metal. After a moment's struggle, he brings the heavy metal object to the side and looks at the darkness below. Sighing, the amnesiac teen jumps down in the underground passageway below.
The first thing that came to Starkiller's senses is one of the most putrid odors he ever smelled. Controlling himself from coughing up his lunch, the young man pulled out his lightsaber. Activating the weapon, aqua blue light filled the dark hallway, giving him more visibility than before. Looking down, the young man groaned that his boots are covered in sewage. "This smell will never come off." The young man groaned before starting to walk, doing his best to ignore the putrid odor around him as he uses his lightsaber to illuminate his path.
He walked down the same path for what seemed like hours, the walls seen from lightsaber's glow not looking any different than earlier. The young man really wondered if he's just going in circles. His thoughts were broken when he heard sloshing of sewage several feet behind him. Narrowing his eyes, Starkiller knows he's being followed but by who? Catwoman? Cheshire? Batman? Seeing a path breaking away from the main one, Starkiller turns the corner and deactivates his lightsaber, his ear close to the wall to hear the sound of sewage being sloshed back and forth from footsteps. Waiting for a few moments, the footsteps reached closer, no doubt whoever is pursuing him is now lost without the aid of his lightsaber's helpful glow. When the sounds were close enough, Starkiller jumped out, activating his weapon and pointing the blade at the interloper. He was met with a sharp arrow, ready to be released directly at his face.
With his lightsaber activated, Starkiller felt his jaw go slack. "Artemis?" He asked in disbelief, lowering his weapon to see the blonde clad in her uniform.
"Galen." She greeted, lowering her bow and placing the arrow back in her quiver.
"What are you doing here?!" The two asked simultaneously, pointing an accused finger at each other.
Removing his hood, Galen asked first. "What are you doing here? How did you even find me?" The young man asked, clearly perplexed as to how the archer knew where he is.
Artemis frowned. "Before you left the Cave, I…I put a tracer on your sleeve." She explained though the end of her sentence was spoken in a more soft tone.
Eyes widening, Galen reached into his backpack and took out his shirt from earlier. And sure enough, there was a green tracer fitted snugly on his outer sleeve. Placing both items back in his backpack, the young man looked back at the archer unamused. "Seriously Artemis? A tracer?" He asked, remembering the blonde's actions on their latest mission.
The other teen's frown deepens. "Hey! Don't judge me mister since you're doing shady, secret stuff too!" She replied indignantly, her voice reverberating in the sewer. "Seriously Galen? What's going on? Why are you partners with Catwoman? What are you doing in this sewer?" She took a moment to compose herself before looking at the young man dead in the eyes. "Galen… just tell me the truth." She pleaded, her tone softer and quieter than her outburst.
Looking into her gray eyes, the young man sighed. "It's not what you think Artemis. I'm not partners with Catwoman. I only used her to find out where Fett is, which apparently is tonight in this sewer." He explained honestly, not bothering to lie to the one person he has strong feelings for.
In light of this revelation, Artemis stared back in slight shock. "Wait, he's here. In this sewer?" She asked, wanting a clarification.
Galen nodded. "Yeah." He confirmed, noticing the pitiful look on Artemis' face. He quickly spoke up before she can say anything. "Artemis, please give me this. You don't know what it's like, being so lost over who I am." He explained before gesturing to himself in general. "What I am." The young man added, looking at his lightsaber before returning his gaze to the archer. "I know Fett could have said those things because he hates what I am, but he's the only link to who I once was. I need answers. Maybe… maybe once I get them from him, my nightmares will stop."
The two then stood in silence, with Artemis taking in Galen's small speech and listening to every word. "Okay, I understand Galen." She replied, walking a step closer to him. "And I'm coming with you." She stated, her voice offering no objections.
Galen's forehead creased in anxiety. "Artemis, it's too dangerous. I've faced against Fett personally. He'll—" He was going to say more until the blonde cut him off.
"Then it's better that I come with you." Artemis interrupted, ending the debate. Seeing the worry on the older teen's face, the Eurasian girl added "If things get too out of hand, we contact the Cave. Okay?" She compromised and her face lightened up at seeing Galen nodding in approval.
"Yeah, that sounds like a plan." He said, the two continuing down the main sewer hall with Galen leading the way using his lightsaber like a torch. "From what Catwoman told me, she said Fett is meeting with Black Mask down this path. Though earlier, I felt like I was walking for hou—" His conversation ceased when a blaster shot rang out across the sewer. Giving a glance to each other, Galen placed his hood over his head and ran towards the source of the sound. Artemis followed, arrow ready in her bowstring.
When Artemis kept up with Galen, she saw the Force-user knelt down over a grate, staring throw the holes in it with an intense gaze. Noticing his lightsaber is deactivated, Artemis puts her arrow away and kneels next to the amnesiac teen, curious to what he's seeing.
Below the grate, there is a hidden large subsection underneath with two tunnels leading out in opposite directions. There was some kind of portable lights set up in the room, illuminating it for others to see. The two teens see four men, wearing some kind of white armor. Two of them were sitting on a slightly raised platform, doing nothing in particular. The other two were standing, though one had his helmet in his hands as the other soldier's gun released smoke, indicating he was the one who fired the shot.
Targo groaned, turning to the corporal who just fired his blaster. "Corporal, any particular reason as to why you fired your weapon?" The Imperial captain asked, hours of waiting in this meeting location making his patience wear thin.
The lower ranked officer stood in attention. "Sir, I was merely practicing my aim. That rodent proved to be a fine target." The younger man explained, as Targo shifted his gaze from the soldier to the now-dead rat a few feet away, smoke coming from its carcass.
"In any case, limit using your blaster packs. If this deal doesn't happen, Fett could be right about conserving our ammunition." Targo recommended, earning a salute from the corporal. The captain then turned his attention to the clone troopers, the both them sitting down on a raised platform with one of them carrying the case with the money.
"Lieutenant." The captain exclaimed, getting one of the clones' attention. "What time is it now?"
The trooper took out the holographic projector and pressed a button, revealing the current hour and minutes. "Sir, it is ten minutes passed from the supposed time that the deal is supposed to take place." The clone answers as Targo clenches his fist in disappointment.
The corporal, checking his blaster, speaks up. "Sir, what if this Black Mask doesn't show?" The trooper asked, a thought that entered Targo's head.
"He'd better. Otherwise, this trip in this disgusting place would be a waste of my time." The captain growled, silently cursing Fett for doing this degrading job for him.
"Ye of little faith." A gruff voice rang out from the tunnel opposite from the soldiers. A figure stepped out of the shadows, wearing an expensive white suit with a purple shirt underneath. But what is most noticeable is the skull-like black mask on the man's face.
Knowing who he is, Targo placed his helmet back on his head, their business about to start. "You're late." The captain stated, his voice slightly distorted in his helmet.
Black Mask chuckled. "I just got this suit. Don't want it dirty." He replied as ten men working for Mask arrive, dragging three giant wooden crates on wheels into the room. Looking at the four Imperials, Mask narrows his eyes. "Where's Fett?" He asked, his voice rough.
The three Imperials look to their captain, the man being the one to speak on behalf of them. "He is preoccupied at the moment. I was sent to follow this deal through." Targo replied, his answer not satisfying the crimelord.
"I ain't dealing with no middle man." Mask replied, clearly unhappy that Fett isn't here.
Stifling a curse, Targo resumed the conversation. "We have the money." The captain assured, gesturing to the clone soldier carrying the metallic case. "You have the weapons. The deal is still on. If it's off, it would be a waste of everyone's time." The Imperial reasoned, all eyes pointing on him. For a moment, it was tense silence as Mask met Targo's emotionless helmet's gaze.
Then suddenly, Black Mask broke out with a humorless chuckle. "You got a point." The crimelord acknowledged, with the tension in the air lowering. "Alright, let's see the cash." Mask commanded, the deal going through.
Targo gives a wave to the clone having the case, beckoning him to bring the object to him. The trooper did as instructed, giving the captain said case. With the money in one hand, Targo moves closer to Mask and lifts it open. Seeing the bills caused Mask to grin in pleasure. "And now, the weapons." Targo requested, with Mask snapping his fingers. At the notion, Mask's henchmen used crowbars to pry the crates' lids open, the covers placed on the ground. Targo, closing the case, walks to the crates and inspects the weapons inside. And true to his word, assault rifles, portable rocket launchers, and landmines are all present.
Forming a smile for once in this miserable day, Targo extended his hand. "Pleasure doing business with you." He remarked with Mask shaking the hand with his own.
Starkiller and Artemis watched all that is uncovering from above, being quiet as they can. "Fett's not here. Damn it." The Force-user whispered, frowning that his chance is gone.
Artemis placed a hand on his shoulder. "I'm sorry Galen, but we have to go back to the surface and contact the Cave. We need backup." The archer reasoned, her gray eyes filled with concern.
Galen nodded. "I know, I know, just a little longer. Maybe I can hear one of them tell Fett's location." He insisted, leaning forward on the grate to hear more. He was so eager on what he wanted to hear from the Stormtroopers, Starkiller didn't realize the grate began to creak and wobble.
Eyes widening, Artemis knew what would happen next. "Galen-!" She began but the grate fell under Starkiller's feet, the Force-user yelping and falling into the room below. The amnesiac young man fell to the room with a thud, landing on his stomach and coughing from the fall.
All the armed men in the room watched in confusion, though the 501st members had a different reaction. "The Jedi!" Targo exclaimed, the entirety of their mission right in front of them.
Black Mask, however, is less than thrilled. "You were followed?!" He snarled but Targo ignored his outburst.
"Set your blasters to stun. Time to get Fett his prize." The captain ordered, the Stormtroopers raising their blasters. Before they had the chance, an explosive arrow launched in between the Stormtroopers, sending the Imperials flying back.
"Get to cover!" Mask ordered, pulling out his handgun as his henchmen fired in all directions. Above where the grate once was, Artemis provided covering fire for Galen.
"Artemis to Cave: me and Starkiller are engaged in combat with Black Mask and several unknowns! Need immediate backup!" The archer shouted amidst the gunfire in the air.
Getting back to his feet, Starkiller activated his lightsaber, using the Force to augment his speed and disarm Mask's men of their weapons before blasting them away with either telekinesis or lightning. Seeing the situation becoming unmanageable, Mask took it as his chance to run. "Screw this shit! I'm out of here!" He yelled, making a run for it in the northern tunnel with his now disarmed henchmen following.
The 501st soldiers got up from the explosive arrow attack, with Targo glaring at the blonde above. "You two!" He shouted, getting the clones' attention. "Distract the girl! Me and the corporal will take care of the Jedi!" The 501st captain ordered. The two clone Imperial troops nodded, focusing their E-11 blasters on the blonde. Artemis quickly went to cover, blaster bolts nearly singing her.
With his blaster set to stun, Targo eyed Starkiller down. "Hello Jedi." The Imperial captain snarled, both him and the corporal trigger fingers at the ready.
Galen held his lightsaber in a defensive posture. "Where's Fett?" The young man demanded, his blue blade humming in the air.
"Busy." Targo replied, a dangerous smirk forming inside his helmet. "And unlucky for you traitor, you will be sent back to the Empire unharmed so that your execution will be swift." The 501st soldier added before him and the corporal fired stun blasts from their blasters. Masterfully, Starkiller blocked the attacks with his lightsaber before retaliating with a telekinetic push. The corporal was sent flying back to the wall, stone breaking apart from his impact as he laid motionless on the ground. Targo was pushed roughly on the ground, groaning from the blast as his E-11 scattered to the side. The two clone troopers who focused their fire on Artemis re-aimed their sights on Starkiller, firing their shots. The Force-user deflected their blaster bolts before using the Force to cast lightning from his fingertips, immobilizing the troopers and sending them flying back. Snarling, Targo pulls out a virboblade from his belt and slashes wildly at Galen. The Force-user dodged his swings with ease, allowing himself room against the captain so Artemis can take a shot. A precise shot from her bow struck Targo's knife hand, forcing him to drop the weapon. Artemis then jumped down arrow ready as Starkiller used a telekinetic push to his face, sending the captain to the ground and shattering half of his helmet.
Targo groans, removing his now broken helmet as Artemis walks up beside Starkiller, a sharp arrow aimed right at him. "Don't move a muscle." She demanded, her body as tense as her bowstring.
The skirmish over, Starkiller pointed his lightsaber at the Imperial captain. "Who are you?" The young man demanded, his brown eyes glaring at the Stormtrooper.
Targo laughed. "Don't play dumb Jedi. You know who we are and why you are nothing but a criminal." The captain replied, as unknown to the three of them the corporal began to stir and move.
At being called a criminal, Starkiller edged his blade closer to the captain, hoping to frighten him. Instead, Targo glared back unafraid. "Go on then, kill me. Kill me like how the other Jedi tried to kill the Emperor all those years ago." He goaded, with Artemis and Galen focused on him while the corporal gets back up to his feet.
The young man resumes his glare at the defeated Imperial. "I'm no murderer." Galen responded, his grip on his lightsaber tightening as he remembers similar words Fett said to him in New Orleans.
Targo chuckled darkly. "Who are you trying to fool? The attack on the Emperor. The betrayal of the Jedi. Operation Knightfall. All results that prove you Jedi are all filth." The captain listed off.
Galen frowned at those words. He swore he's heard them before somewhere else, he just can't remember… "I have no idea what you're talking about." The amnesiac teen replied, as Artemis watched the conversation with concern.
The Imperial captain snarled. "Why are you acting like you have no idea what I'm saying?! It's almost as if…" Suddenly, Targo paused, taking a moment to notice the puzzled look on Galen's face before breaking out into a cruel smirk. "You really have no idea who you are." The captain proclaimed, the tone of his voice filled with amusement and condescension.
Their conversation was cut short as the dazed corporal is preparing to throw something in his hand, a thermal detonator. Suddenly, Targo's cruel smirk morphed into a look of horror. "Corporal, stop!" He ordered but the disorientated trooper threw the explosive anyway. Luckily, the device flew harmlessly over the three of them. Unluckily, the detonator rolled up next to the crate filled with the portable rocket launchers. All the color drained from Targo's face. "Oh hell." He muttered as Starkiller quickly used the Force to send both the detonator and the crate high into the ceiling.
"Artemis, get down!" Starkiller screamed as the detonator exploded, igniting the rockets on the ceiling and a huge explosion occurring. Seeing Artemis' frantic look was the last thing Starkiller saw before the shockwave from the ceiling sent everyone to the floor and knocking his head on the pavement, suddenly feeling bliss.
There was noise.
A lot of noise.
Someone telling him to get up, yelling loudly. Go away. Galen thought, wanting to rest. Probably the best sleep he's had since he came here. The voice getting louder, screaming his name. "Galen!"
"Galen!" The voice was more desperate.
"Galen! Galen, Get Up!"
Suddenly, the young man shot up, clutching his head as Artemis helped him to his feet. Debris is falling everywhere, the sewer caving in. Blinking repeatedly, Artemis gripped him by the shoulders. "We have to get out of here!" She yelled amidst the chaos happening around them.
"Wait!" Galen said, turning around. "Where are Fett's men?!" He asked, and watched as the four Stormtroopers ran in the south tunnel, with Targo holding a metallic case. Realizing he's staring, Artemis made him face towards her.
"Forget them! We have to go… NOW!" Artemis yelled, as she and Galen ran in the tunnel in the opposite direction. They ran as fast they could, all the meanwhile the structural integrity above them collapse. Realizing they won't make it out in this speed, Galen scooped Artemis up in his arms and used whatever energy he had to channel the Force into his legs. In a zoom, the Force-user ran as fast as he could, holding the blonde archer tight as the sewer water began to flood the lower levels. As he was running, the Force sensitive sees the hole where he took off the lid, tens of feet above him. Using whatever he had left, Starkiller jumped straight up, narrowly avoiding the torrent of sewage water heading their way. He successfully made it to the surface, landing on the street with Artemis in his arms. Coughing wildly, Galen lowered the archer from his arms and turned around to see the road in back of them partially collapsed underground.
"That was… that was too close." Galen muttered, knowing full well a terrible fate could have happened to them if he wasn't fast enough.
The young man felt a nudge on his arm. "Ah, Galen?" Artemis asked, prompting the Force-user to turn around. There the impassive cowl of Batman stared right at him as the young man noticed Black Mask and his henchmen all apprehended by Robin, Kid Flash, and Aqualad as sirens begin flooding the streets of Gotham.
It didn't take M'gann's mind link to know what Batman is thinking through the glare aimed right at him. He's in trouble. BIG time.
Blüdhaven December 8th 1920 hours
The disheveled body of Captain Targo barged through the warehouse with his equally rustled-up men following in tow. The troops in the warehouse all paused and looked at how covered in dust and grime all four of them are. With added displeasure, they all smell like they dived headfirst in Bantha fodder. Boba Fett waited for them in the center of the building, not saying a word as the bounty hunter noticed their beaten and dirty appearance. They stopped in front of the Mandalorian to catch their breath, all of them helmetless and panting wildly.
Fett watched them for a minute before asking the question every other Imperial in the building had on their minds. "What the hell happened?" The son of Jango Fett asked, his voice calm but tittering on the edge of yelling.
Targo spoke on behalf of his men. "The boy… he was there. Must have followed us when we were going through with the deal." The Imperial captain explained, getting the Mandalorian's complete and utter attention.
"The Jedi was there?" Fett asked, not bothering to hide the shock in his voice.
Targo nodded, noticing the apologetic look on the corporal's face. "A firefight ensued. The Jedi brought a friend, the girl archer. He then used his lightning to trigger the explosives in one of the crates, attempting to kill us. Luckily, we escaped." Although the captain lied, he was true about the explosion. The corporal giving the biggest thankful grin he can muster to the highest-ranking Imperial as the two clone Stormtroopers remained silent. "Also, I have the case." He said, presenting the item to the Mandalorian. "A little banged up, but overall intact." The captain explained as Boba Fett took the metallic case in his hands.
Opening it briefly to make sure everything is intact, Fett looked back at the captain. "Is that everything that happened?" The bounty hunter asked, curious to know what else occurred in this eventful evening.
Targo smirked. "He has no idea who he is." The captain added, causing Fett to double-take.
"Come again?" The Mandalorian asked, wanting to make sure his helmet isn't malfunctioning.
The captain's smirk remained. "The boy. He has no idea who he is." The captain repeated, with Boba Fett being silent as this information sunk in.
Having his respect for the Imperial captain grow immediately, Fett nodded. "Good work, Captain Targo. Relieve yourself and your three men from guard duty today and tomorrow night. You've earned it." He complimented, Targo giving a respectful nod as well with all four men retreating to their private quarters, intent of resting as a reward.
With this new information, Fett grinned maliciously under his helmet. "Well, now things just got interesting." He muttered quietly to himself, adjusting his plans in light of this vital information.
Mount Justice December 8th 2110 hours
"This is Vicki Vale reporting live from downtown Gotham. Hours earlier, what was a quiet and peaceful street erupted in chaos and destruction as the road behind me caved in directly into the sewers. What was said left by an official statement from police was the criminal Black Mask attempted to make an arms deal with an unknown party. Something went wrong in the exchange, as a crate of weapons misfired causing an explosion in the sewers. Multi-billionaire Bruce Wayne has already made a statement that he is planning to donate funds to fix the road and the ruined sewage system in this neighborhood. There have been reports that fairly new hero Starkiller was also present, but these reports are unconfirmed. Time can only tell what really happened on this fairly eventful night. This is Vicki Vale fro—"
The transmission was turned off in the mission room as all members of the Team, save for Red Arrow, is present with Batman. Galen didn't say a word since returning to the Cave, silently acknowledging the actions he made tonight. The Dark Knight walked up to the troubled teen, a deathly calm concealing restrained fury. "Explain." He demanded, no ordered.
Robin watched the two next to Zatanna, a frown filled with disappointment. All the progress that was made tonight… all that hard work for his mentor to trust Galen… and then his friend pulls this stunt, destroying any chance of Batman giving the amnesiac teen the benefit of the doubt.
Totally. Not. Traught.
Feeling all eyes on him, Galen spoke up. "I'm sorry, okay? I went looking for Fett on my own. The only clue I had to his location was Gotham so I went digging. When I heard that Fett had a weapons deal with Black Mask, I investigated. Things… just got out of hand." The Force-user explained, feeling guilt for his actions.
Batman's eyes narrow behind his cowl. "You lied to me. You faced several unknowns, risking not just your life but Artemis' as well, when you should have exited the sewer and waited for back-up." The Dark Knight reprimanded, everyone glued on this conversation.
"Yes, I get it!" Galen shot back, not standing down. "I messed up! But you don't know what it's like Batman, to be in this world with no idea who and what you are. I need answers. I-I can't stand another night with visions haunting my sleep!" The Force-user finally vented, the members of the Team taken aback by his words as the young man breathed erratically.
Batman, taking a moment to consider the young man's physical and mental state, spoke up. "Clearly, this obsession with Fett has made this too personal for you to think rationally about not just your well-being, but those close to you." The Dark Knight spoke, that line aimed particularly at Artemis. "As of this moment forward, you are suspended by taking assignments with the Team. On days where you have school, you report immediately to the Cave, no exceptions."
The Team looked at Batman in utter shock, even Robin founding himself almost agape at what his mentor just said. Galen was heartbroken. "What?" He whispered, his eyes growing as wide as dish plates. "Y-You can't!" The young man protested, feeling his anger rising.
Batman remained calm. "I can and I will. Fett is making you act irrationally, clouding your judgment. My concern is the well-being on the Team as a whole and as of right now, they cannot afford a liability in the field."
Galen began to breathe heavily, clenching his fist in rage as the Team can feel the pure anger radiating off the young man in waves. "Galen…" Artemis tried to speak but the young man didn't hear her.
"It's always the same with you, isn't it?" The Force-user spat, his face morphing into a growl. "I can save the Team ten times over, offer myself to be Nabu's puppet, help save a queen from another country, but I make one mistake and that's enough for you to bench me." He snarled, his voice rising higher. "It's never enough for you, is it?! You never trusted me from the beginning! Always judging me, always watching me! Well, I've had enough from you!" Galen screamed, his sight blurring Batman with an unknown dark figure that always gave him torment in his nightmares.
The Dark Knight didn't back down, placing a gloved hand on Galen's shoulder. "Calm down." He ordered, though the Force-user only got angrier.
"Get off of me." Galen snarled, as Batman noticed his eyes began turning from brown to a harsh and raged-filled yellow.
"Calm. Down." The Dark Knight repeated, refusing to go let go.
"I said… GET OFF!" Galen roared before releasing a powerful telekinetic push at Batman, sending the World's Greatest Detective into the wall.
The Team watched in horror, most too stunned to speak or move. "Batman!" Robin cried, running towards his mentor with Aqualad and Superboy helping the Dark Knight to his feet. For a few moments, Galen breathed heavily, calming down. With his eyes reverting back to brown, the amnesiac teen's rage turned to horror when he realized what he just did.
Artemis turned from the injured Batman to Galen, who began to shake. She noticed his arms and legs are twitching and that his gaze looked at the Zeta tube.
Oh God, he's going to run.
"Galen…" Artemis began, using her most calm voice she can muster to ease the young man from doing something drastic. It fell on deaf ears as Galen immediately ran, picking up his backpack and entering the Zeta tube. "Galen wait!" Artemis pleaded but was too late as the technological marvel announced his departure. Everyone was too stunned to stop him, no one said a word.
Particularly Batman, his eyes behind his cowl staring at the Zeta tube for what seemed like an eternity.
Gotham City December 9th 0235 hours
Catwoman pants as she avoids the spotlight from one of Gotham's police helicopters, running endlessly on rooftops. Not long after the twerp turned on her, the feline thief managed to get away. It took a little bit of time to break into the police department and get the egg back before they handed it back to the auction house. Although, breaking out caused a commotion, creating this mess. As she is running, she noticed that the next building is fifteen feet away. With no where to run and the egg in one hand, attempts the jump. She was close… but not close enough.
Before falling to the street below and potentially break something more than the egg, a gloved hand caught her free arm. Catwoman looked up, green eyes confused as she was pulled to the roof. Much to her surprise, her savior is Starkiller. "Are you going to run or what?" The Force-user asked, taking the initiative and starting to run with Catwoman following.
Eventually, the police copter gave up the search, returning back to the station as the Force-user and feline thief watch from below. When the coast is clear, Catwoman spoke first. "I don't get you kid. First, you turn on me and leave me to the cops and now you help me run? What's your deal?" The feline thief demanded, unsure of what to make of the young man.
Starkiller sighed and swallowed some air before speaking. "I need your help." He said, his voice sounding croaked.
Catwoman couldn't help but laugh. "Why should I help you? After leaving me to the cops? Give me one good reason." She requested, a glare being sent at his direction.
The young man removed his hood, allowing the cat burglar to see his face filled with misery. "I have nowhere else to go. I…I did something stupid, got Batman pissed at me." He said, his voice sounding a lot younger than what Selina heard earlier.
Seeing his guilt-ridden face, the cat thief calmed down. "You're partners with Batman?" She asked, her voice filled with curiosity.
"Was." The amnesiac teen clarified. "He doesn't trust me. He won't allow me to find Fett. Tonight it wasn't him, his henchmen went to the deal." The young man explained before turning to the feline thief. "Please, I need your help to find Fett. It's just me right now." He pleaded, knowing full well Batman will probably start hunting him down soon being that he transported to Gotham.
Catwoman considered his offer. "What's in it for me? If I were to accept your offer, I won't be doing this out of the charity of my good will." The burglar insisted.
Galen sighed, knowing full well he has no other choice. "I can use my abilities to help you steal whatever you want." He offered, with Catwoman's eyes widening in surprise.
"Whatever I want?" She repeated, her ruby colored lips stretching into a smile.
The Force-user nodded in defeat. "Yes. In return, you'll help me find Fett so I can bring him to Batman." He clarified, extending his hand. "Do we have a deal?"
Seeing that dangerous smile is all it took for Galen to realize that the gray line he was walking earlier became completely submerged in black. Catwoman shook his hand without hesitation.
"Deal."
Other Notes: So… a few things first. To my knowledge, I don't believe Catwoman appeared in Young Justice at all as of yet. For a visual representation, my vision of the character is based off her appearance from the video game Batman: Arkham City.
As for the 501st Legion, I know that Legends and Canon differs who compose that unit. In Legends, the entirety of the 501st are composed of clones whereas in Canon, all clones are phased out by humans. I decided to mix the two, in that for the most part, the 501st Legion is composed of cloned humans but certain normal humans who achieve certain battlefield achievements and get Vader's approval are allowed to serve. Just wanted to clear some stuff.
I hope this chapter was too your liking and I am once again sorry for the long hiatus. Please, any comment, review, critique is appreciated as this is my first chapter being both not based off an episode and the longest one I've ever written. Again, thank you for reading. This is Logan GC signing off, and have a nice day.
