Thanks for the reviews, now let's continue with the story.
*Huey's P.O.V*
"Cookie? Why are you here?" Granddad asked, a question that roamed in everyone's head.
Everyone in the room was shocked to hear that the person we were supposed to go visit was now standing in the living room. Our friends who had no idea who she was now knew who she was and were very confused.
"I kept calling you and leaving voicemails to tell you I was coming, why didn't you picked up?"
"What? I got voicemails that said you wanted us to come visit you for something important."
"Yes, then I changed my mind and decided to come to you guys instead, which is why I called all morning to let you know I was coming soon. Where's your phone?"
Riley then ran upstairs to grab Granddad's phone. After a few seconds, he can downstairs and handed the phone to Granddad. He then decided to play one of the messages out loud.
"Robert, how are you doing? I haven't heard from you boys in a while. I know this is short notice but I was wondering if you guys can come visit me for something important. I don't want to say what it's about, but just know it's urgent. Thanks, call me back as soon as you get this."
"I got that last night." Granddad finished.
"Last night? I sent that a week ago." Cookie said.
Everyone in the room became dead silent as Granddad was mistaken. I grabbed Granddad's phone to see the date, and to no surprise, Aunt Cookie was right.
"Granddad, she sent this last Sunday." I said. I went to his call log and seen multiple missed calls from her as well. "And all of her missed calls are right here."
Granddad grabbed the phone from me. "This damn flip phone, i'm getting me an android."
Riley and I rolled our eyes, as everybody else giggled.
"So, does that mean you guys are actually staying?" Jazmine asked, hope in her eyes.
"I guess so." I said and everyone in the room got excited.
"Aunt Cookie, how long are you going to stay with us?" Riley asked.
"Actually, I'm not staying for that long." Aunt Cookie said.
I raised my eyebrow and got curious. Why did she make this long trip just to leave in less than a day or however long she's planning on staying.
"Why not? You made a long trip and you're family, you can stay as long as you want." Granddad said.
"Robert, can I speak to you privately please?" She asked and went to the kitchen without waiting for an answer. Granddad looked at us confusingly and hesitated for a second, before following her into the kitchen.
The vibe in the room was awkward as no one knew what was going on, or what Aunt Cookie had to say to Granddad so suddenly. This left me with a weird feeling in my stomach, and Riley looking confused as well. All of our friends saw our expressions and tried to make light on it.
"Y'all look like y'all saw a ghost." Cindy said to Riley.
"Right. Halloween is a year away, no ghosts are here." Tamara said and most people in the room started snickering.
The ones who weren't snickering were Jazmine, Gwen, Heather and Chris, who were trying to figure things out with me.
"What do you think they're talking about?" Heather asked, referring to Granddad and Aunt Cookie.
"Must be something important. You have any clue?" Chris asked me
"I have no idea, hopefully it's nothing serious." I said.
"When was the last time you seen her?" Gwen asked.
"I can't lie, it's been a while. Last time we seen her though, everything seemed fine."
"It's probably something light like she needs help finding a house or something to move closer to you guys." Jazmine said. Whenever Jazmine gets confused or worried about something she has no idea about, she tries to find different solutions or outcomes that could be possible.
However, I don't know what do believe and I never will until I know what they're talking about in the kitchen.
While it's true we haven't spoken to Aunt Cookie in a while, she's the only other family Riley and I know other than Granddad, clearly. So it's usually rare for her to come to us with any problems.
After about another minute, all of the conversations in the room were stopped when Granddad and Cookie came back into the living room, and the tension was thick once again.
"Is everything fine?" Riley asked.
Aunt Cookie looked like she was going to speak, but Granddad beat her to it. "Yes, everything is."
Granddad received a quick glare from Aunt Cookie, but they both looked away. I don't think anyone else in the room caught it before I did.
"Okay then, let me take your bags upstairs then." Riley said, walking towards Aunt Cookie and Tom following along.
"That won't be necessary honey." Aunt Cookie stopped him.
Riley stopped and once again looked confused. Granddad looked nervous and kept his head down. I knew they were hiding something.
"What are you keeping from us? What's the real reason that you came?" I asked Aunt Cookie.
"Boy, watch your mouth speaking to your Aunt like-"
"No, Robert, it's okay." Aunt Cookie stopped him.
Granddad looked shocked and realized nothing he could say or do now was going to make her not talk.
"Boys, the real reason I came is.." She stopped for a second.
Everyone in the room patiently waited for her to continue. The tension was very heavy and everyone was nervous because no one what she was going to say.
She took a deep breath while Granddad held his.
"I want you boys to come live with me."
Woah. To say that the room went quiet would be an understatement. The room was practically dead quiet as everyone had mixed reactions. Of course, everyone looked very shocked, but they had different ways of expressing it.
Ed & Rummy looked angry, mainly because they still had no idea what was going on, but they did understand that Riley might be leaving.
Tamara & D'Angelo looked angry and confused because Riley is their close friend and they don't want to lose him.
Gwen looked genuinely confused, mainly because she wanted to know why she wanted us to move with her. Heather looked sad, as she considers me a close friend and did not want to lose me, and Chris looked like he had no emotion, but I knew he was upset as well.
Tom, kept his mouth shut, but kept his head down as he showed some signs of being sad because he grew accustomed to us.
And lastly, Jazmine & Cindy looked very upset. Jazmine showed her sadness with a deep frown, and Cindy showed her sadness with her fists balled, her knuckles almost turning white.
I looked over to Riley, and he was at a lost of words. He made all these friends in the room and now there's a potential fact he's going to be leaving all of them.
I wouldn't exactly say I was sad, I was just shocked and wanted to find answers.
"Why?" I asked. It was like a bullet shot through the room after I asked that because everyone looked up and stared at Granddad and Aunt Cookie, waiting for one of them to answer.
"My husband died." Aunt Cookie finally said, and closed her eyes.
We met her husband a few years back, and he was a nice guy. His name was Harold Jackson, but he decided to take the Freeman last name. He tried to bond with us, and showed he really cared for Aunt Cookie. Whenever we used to visit her, he would always be the first one to greet us and treat us like we lived there.
Which is why I got sad when she said he passed away, and I can visibly see Riley become sad as well.
Now it all makes sense. Aunt Cookie was lonely, and she needed someone to come live with her to keep her company. She's lived in Chicago for so long, and knows sometimes it can be unsafe.
But she didn't care about that. She just wanted another presence in her house, and I assume she wanted Riley and I just to keep her company for give her protection.
"But, Aunt Cookie, we're still going to school. We can't just drop out in the middle of the school year like that and move." Riley said.
"It's not hard for your transcript to be sent to a different school in Chicago. You're not going to stop going to school." She said.
"But we would still be hopping into the middle of the school year of a different school, meaning we'll be far behind in whatever they're teaching, which will lower our grades. Also, I'm sure some schools won't allow you to transfer so late anyway." I said, going against what she said.
"We can easily work that out with the principle and explain the situation, and we'll find a solution." She said.
"But we'll still have to meet new people. What about all of our friends we made? They're gonna be watching us leaving forever right in front of them." Riley said, referring to everyone behind us.
"Look, boys, I'm sorry about this sudden request, but I need you boys and I can't live by myself, I just can't. I'll give you some time to think about it, but please think long and hard." She finished and ushered for Tom to help with her bags upstairs.
After she went upstairs, once again the room became silent. Granddad stood by himself in front of everyone. After realizing this, he went upstairs to help Aunt Cookie settle in.
Riley and I turned to face everybody, and they still had the same expressions.
"Who does she think she is?" Cindy burst out, surprising everyone. "Why does she think she can just come randomly out of nowhere and try to take you guys away?"
"I don't know, but I'll fight for you guys to stay." Tamara said.
"Damn right." Ed said, with Rummy & D'Angelo following suit.
"I don't like this one bit. She seemed so sure of everything too." Gwen said.
Everyone in the room started bickering about them disagreeing with Aunt Cookie. However, the only person I didn't hear a word from was Jazmine. I looked at her and she still had a frown.
I went up to her while everyone continued their bickering. "You okay?"
"Not really. I don't want you to leave." Jazmine said, trying to hold back her tears.
"I'm not going anywhere, don't worry."
"But she's your Aunt, you can't say no to her like that."
"It's not her decision to make, it's mine. And I'll make the one I feel is right." I said.
Jazmine smiled and watched as everyone continued their bickering.
I sighed. This was going to be a messy situation.
*3 Days later*
Ever since Aunt Cookie dropped the bombshell of a request, everyone has been going crazy.
Jazmine has been trying to talk to Aunt Cookie about this situation, but Aunt Cookie has literally been avoiding her, along with Cindy. All of our friends have been trying to been around us as much as they can so that Aunt Cookie can somehow change her mind and see how we're all connected.
And I have not heard from Granddad about this situation ever since it happened. Of course, I never brought it up to him, but I would've figured he would eventually sit down with Riley and I and have a serious talk about it.
For me, I have mixed situations about this whole moving thing. Part of me wants to move, as I sometimes grow tired of Woodcrest and miss Chicago. I was originally from there so it wouldn't be bad to go back to my roots and restart from there.
However, another part of me actually likes being in Woodcrest. Not because of how great the city is, because to be honest, this city is a dump sometimes. But it's the fact that I've lived here for so long, I've gotten used to the dump. Also, I'm so deep into my school year and near graduation that it would make no sense to just leave.
And also, I made so many new friends and met new people that having to start over again would be a headache.
My thoughts were interrupted as I went into the kitchen to grab myself a drink. As I got there, I saw Granddad sitting in his chair in the living room. I wasn't sure what he was doing so I went there to see what he was doing.
"Hey Huey." He said as he spotted me. He got up and went to the kitchen, and I followed him. He got a glass of orange juice and put his cup down on the counter.
"Granddad, you okay?" It was a random question, I know. But I haven't heard from Granddad at all so I was just starting a little small talk.
"I'm fine, why you ask?" Granddad said, with his voice sounding hesitant.
I feel as if he knew I heard him hesitate, so he turned around again.
"Granddad, I have a question." I said. Granddad turned around and looked at me. "What are your thoughts about the whole situation?"
Granddad visibly tensed up and he didn't reply for a minute. I decided to give him time until he answered.
"I have no thoughts about it."
I don't know if I felt upset or pissed at that. I felt something because I don't know why he had no opinion on it.
"Why not?"
"It's both of you boy's decision. You're grown enough to make them on your own." Granddad said.
"But you're our guardian. You opinion matters regardless."
"Boy, once your Aunt has her mind set on something, there's nothing I can do to change her mind."
"So you're not going to at least put up a fight? You just don't care about us?" I said, and I sort of regretted it.
Granddad looked very upset and slammed his cup down on the counter. "Boy, don't you ever say that again. I took you and Riley into my house when you two had no one else. You two are my grandchildren and I've been raising you for over ten years. I gave you a roof over your head, clothes on your back, food in your stomach, and a soft bed to lay on. Even though you two have made me want to sometimes run away, I still care for you two very much and love you both."
"Then if you do, why haven't you said anything about this situation at all? Why have you made it seem like you don't care if we leave or not?" I said.
"Because," Granddad paused for a few seconds before continuing, "I'm scared."
I raised my eyebrow and decided not to speak and waited for him to continue.
"I said you two have made me want to sometimes run away, but clearly I wouldn't get too far if I even attempted. What I'm scared about if you two leaving me here by my own. I'm a very old man, and I honestly don't know how I'm still walking or functioning. That being said, you two have grown into young adults that can defend yourselves, survive for yourselves, and can continue doing so.
Meanwhile for me, I can't do that. I can't defend myself as much as I used to, I can't survive on my own either. In a sense, I need both of you. This house just wouldn't feel right." Granddad finished.
I listened to everything he said and did not expect any of that. I never heard Granddad come off like this, and I felt sympathy for him. He really is getting old and I'm not sure how much he has left to offer, but for the time being he does need us both for protection.
"Another reason is because of Riley. I know I don't have to worry about you, Huey. But I want to look strong for Riley. I know he can't survive on his own that strongly yet. He's getting there, but he's not fully there. That's why I want to show him he can make his own decisions and not have to rely on me or you most of the times." He finished.
I agreed too, Riley still isn't mature but he's slowly working on it. I started to see from his point of view why he's been quiet about this whole situation. He wanted to look strong for the both of us, but he was still scared to admit he actually needed us.
I did something I never expected me to do. I went up to Granddad and gave him a hug.
He hugged me back and we stayed like that for a few more seconds. This was truly the first time I felt like Granddad and I actually connected on the same page.
We both heard foot steps and turned to see Aunt Cookie standing in the kitchen doorway, with a smile on her face.
We both separated and Granddad gave me a head gesture that told me to leave and he'll talk to her. I gave Aunt Cookie a smile and went up to my room, where I saw Riley sitting on his bed.
"I heard everything." He said the moment I walked in. "And I'm pretty sure Aunt Cookie did too."
I should've expected. Granddad really was speaking a little bit loud.
"So, what did you think about it?" I asked, laying down on my bed.
"I never heard Granddad talk like that. I never knew he actually cared for us like that. I thought he was just keeping us in his house so he could get rent discounts or some shit. But, that's crazy." He said.
"Yeah, I didn't expect that either."
"And I heard what he said about me. Do you really think I could take care of myself?"
I looked at Riley, and he really looked serious. In fact, one of the more rarest moments he looked serious.
"I think you could if you learn to be more mature, and keep on growing."
Riley took that answer as the best one he was going to get.
"Huey, I think we should stay." I looked over to him again and waited for his reasoning. "I was all for going to Chicago and starting new lives and shit since that's where we from, but then I thought about it. We met mad new niggas here, and we been living here for a while so it feels like this is truly home. And all that shit Granddad said downstairs showed he really needs us, and I don't wanna abandon the nigga." He finished
Riley said everything I was already thinking about this moving situation. Now that I know Granddad and Riley are on the same page about not moving, it seems like everything is fine so far.
The only issue is convincing Aunt Cookie.
*Next Morning*
The next day around ten in the morning, we heard a knock on our door. Granddad had awoken everyone in the house to make breakfast for everyone.
I went up to the door and opened it, revealing Jazmine and Cindy.
"Goodmorning." Jazmine said smiling, and walked in. Cindy nodded and I nodded back, and she followed Jazmine to the kitchen.
"Hello cutie pies." Granddad said to them. Jazmine and Cindy greeted back, and Cindy dapped Riley. "What brings you two by so early?"
"My dad is at work so we just wanted to see how you guys are doing." Jazmine said.
Already I can tell she just wanted to see if Aunt Cookie changed her mind. Riley, already sensing this, decided to step in. He locked eyes with me and I gave him a nod and he went on with it.
"Cindy, come with me real quick. I need help picking out some outfits. Jazmine, you two." He said. Cindy was confused but still went along with it.
Jazmine, who was confused, didn't know what was going on. "Why me?"
"He needs a second opinion Jazmine, just roll with it." I said. She looked at me to confirm and she reluctantly followed Riley and Cindy.
After the three of them left, Aunt Cookie spoke.
"Huey, it's none of my business but what is she to you?"
I raised my eyebrow. "A close friend."
"Doesn't seem like it to me. From the looks of it, you guys are always around each other, and it shows she really cares about you. A deep kind of care. Same goes for Riley and that Cindy girl." She finished.
"So why have you been avoiding her?"
"I haven't been avoiding her. I clearly knew how she felt about this situation, but her opinion didn't matter as much as yours or Riley's."
I nodded because I guess it made sense.
"What it shows me is that you two definitely link, and it would devastate her to have you up and leave her like that."
I didn't reply because I don't know where this is all coming from and I don't feel like entertaining it.
"Huey, I had a long talk with your Granddad last night after you left the kitchen. And the only question I have is, what do you want to do?" She asked.
I raised my eyebrow curious as to what she meant.
"He made a point saying you two have your own room to make your decisions, and I shouldn't impose such demanding requests like that from you guys. So, whatever decision you guys make, I'm fully behind it." She said.
I looked over to Granddad and saw him cracking a little smile, and I knew he finally stood up to Aunt Cookie.
"I want to stay." I said with all heart.
"Then that's the deal. Once again, i'm sorry for doing this at such short notice and causing drama."
"It's no problem. So you planning on staying here?" I asked.
"No, you boys need your privacy. I can find an apartment out here somewhere."
"If you want, I could always ask Ed to give you one for free." Riley said, coming into the kitchen with Jazmine & Cindy behind him.
I raised my eyebrow at how they all came suddenly.
"Ed Wuncler's son? You can get him to give me a free apartment?""
"Yeah, he's my good friend. I can convince him too." Riley said with a grin and Aunt Cookie smiled.
After a few minutes of extra talking, I went to the living room and Jazmine followed me.
"How much did you hear?" I asked as we both sat down on the couch.
"Starting from where she said it would devastate me if you leave." Jazmine said smiling and I rolled my eyes. I turned on the TV and she wrapped her arms around my arm and rested her head on my shoulder.
It's probably an understatement to say that she's very happy.
*2 Days Later*
Ever since I made my final decision to stay, everything has been calm. Our friends and neighbors found out we were going to stay, and they became ecstatic.
Riley lived on his promise to get Aunt Cookie an apartment and managed to convince Ed to give her a deluxe suite. Now, here we are dragging her luggage downstairs with Tom being her chauffeur.
Granddad, Jazmine, Cindy & Tom were present and were ready to say their goodbyes.
Aunt Cookie gave Granddad a big hug, and dragged Riley & I into it, much to our dismay.
After we finally separated, she went up to Jazmine & Cindy. "Take care of them both, you two."
Both Riley & I rolled our eyes and they giggled.
Aunt Cookie went to the door and turned around. "Thank you guys so much for everything and once again, I apologize for causing a rift like that."
"You didn't cause anything." I said.
"Yeah, everyone just overreacted." Riley said.
"You're not a rift. You're more than welcomed to come back anytime you want." Granddad said and everyone nodded in agreement.
Aunt Cookie nodded and smiled and left, with Tom right behind her.
After the door closed, everyone sighed heavily and sat on the living room couches.
"I'm glad that's over." Riley said and everyone agreed.
"Mr. Freeman." Jazmine said and Granddad looked at her. "I heard you said you love Riley and Huey."
Granddad glared at Riley and immediately he started chuckling, along with Cindy.
"Please, I only said all that so Aunt Cookie would leave." He lied.
"Sure Granddad, it's okay if you love us. We not gonna think you gay or anything." He said, continuing to chuckle.
After a few seconds of more laughter, we all heard a whipping noise. Riley stopped laughing and turned to Granddad, who had a belt in his hand, staring Riley down.
Riley then got up from the couch and ran upstairs, with Granddad chasing after him. Jazmine and Cindy started laughing and I even cracked a tiny smile.
Things were finally back to normal.
