It's been far too long since I left off, let's get back to it!
On we go with our last relaxed chapter!
Peaceful Day
When Rean walked out of the side room, Laura stood from her seat beside his mother to wave him over. "Rean, the best seats are here! Hurry before it begins!"
Rean jogged to her side and, in an act of brazen daring, cupped her cheek for a deep kiss.
Laura flushed in surprise, cheeks turning a deep red as Teo gave a loud whistle at the sight. "That's my boy! Stare death in the eye and come back to your lady!"
"I don't believe that's quite right, Lord Schwarzer." Rufus said with his usual smirk. "There's still the matter of us facing our deaths, so let's not celebrate your son's courage quite yet. Not to mention he has duels of his own before making that claim."
Victor stepping onto the training platform with blade drawn and power roaring about him reminded everyone why they were there, though the Viscount wore an amused smirk of his own. "Who says my dear girl is his lady? Is he not more her man?"
"Father!" Laura cried, mortified as Rean just laughed. "Stop making this about us, get on with it!"
The duelists laughed, but their focus sharpened as they took position. Klaus stood opposite the spectators, a rapier at his side and face set in a neutral mask. "This is not a formal duel, but I shall act as referee all the same."
Lucia grabbed Rean's arm and forced him to sit, Laura taking her spot beside him with eager eyes taking in every detail. Rean was equally enthused, barely noticing the note-pad and pencil Lucia held out for him.
Lucia giggled as Rean took the stationary and started to write, pencil blurring over paper as Laura gave a running commentary on the stances and slightest movements.
"Your children are sword-nuts." Rufus commented airily as the duelists eyed each other. "I don't know if that's a match made in heaven or hell."
Victor's sword fell from his shoulder to his side, relaxed and alert at the same time. "Then we best give them a good showing. Come, and show me if you have any pride in those blades!"
His opponents blurred forward, Teo's blade raised with clear intent to take Victor's head while Rufus came in low, poised to stab the Viscount through the leg.
Not one opening was presented in their attack, already in sync with only a single warm-up to learn the other's ticks. It was the perfect attack.
Victor's sword swept forth and broke the assault like a passing wind.
Rufus and Teo slid back from the force, faces set in masks of concentration. Victor still had his smirk in place, daring them to keep trying.
Rufus blurred forth with a flurry of strikes, each precise and calculated for maximum effect. It was a grand showing of the court's fencing style, every thrust and jab a work of art that Jusis aspired to reach one day.
Not one so much as touched Victor, the master turning aside each blow with a speed unbecoming of a man his age wielding such a large sword. Rufus kept at it; brow beaded with sweat as he kept up his unrelenting assault despite making little if any progress.
Victor kept smiling as he systematically emasculated the Albarea heir. He knew the young man was quite proud of his skills with the blade. It showed in how a frown worked its way onto that handsome face the longer he went without so much as making Victor blink.
Then Victor caught Rufus's blade on his own, the younger man frozen as he was suddenly trapped in a contest of strength.
Victor smiled at him, almost serene.
Rufus returned it with his best award-winning smile.
Then he vanished as Victor twisted his wrist and batted the young man straight out of the ring and into the wall. A massive boom echoed through the hall as Rufus's impact kicked up a cloud of dust, the obscuring cloud slowly fading.
Teo stared as he watched Rufus hang against the wall for a moment, a spider-web of cracks behind him, before he peeled off the wall and fell face-first to the ground.
He gulped before facing off against Victor again. "Well… that was something."
"I'm feeling much better." Victor said, as if discussing the weather. "I just took care of an annoyance is all. Now, want to show me what you have?"
Teo nodded and started his assault. The Schwarzer style relied on more finesse and sweeping strikes than the quick and precise style Rufus used, but it made up for it with liberal application of arts.
Fire, lightning, ice, and wind rained on the Viscount as Teo twisted and thrust his blade from odd angles. The light show was meant to distract from the dance of steel Teo was putting on, with his opponent either defeated by blade or element.
Victor smacked each art aside like they barely existed, even no-selling a direct bolt of lightning while he blocked several vicious consecutive strikes from Teo.
But, Teo smirked after the last strike of the combo, Victor reading his intent just a moment too late.
A pillar of fire erupted under Teo's feet, forcing the duelists away as the murderous heat made them sweat. Victor had barely a moment to ready himself before Teo charged through the flames and struck, his blade stopped a bare inch from nicking Victor's lapel.
"Impressive." Victor praised as he held Teo off with one arm. "You could hold off a platoon with that style. Quick question, how much energy does it use?"
Teo kept pressing despite his sweat beaded brow and short breaths. "It… takes a lot. Shock and awe are the last things… most expect, but I can't… deliver the coup de grace anymore. The problems… with getting old."
Victor nodded and pushed him away. "Indeed, though I have a feeling you can still do it if you try. Prana knows a great remedy for pulled muscles, so give me your best."
Teo chuckled and held out his blade, power flowing through the metal. "Very well then, if you'll have it."
Victor held out his blade in salute, a silent challenge.
Teo grinned and swept his blade back, the power in his blade conjuring mystical hounds that snarled at the Viscount. Teo blurred forward and caught Victor on his backfoot, driving the Viscount back if only just.
The hounds followed with hellish howls, leaping at the Viscount with reckless abandon. Victor destroyed each as they charged him, but every swing of Teo's sword summoned more and more until entire packs threw themselves at the Radiant Blademaster.
As Victor dealt with them, Teo reappeared and concentrated, power roaring through his blade until it formed a snarling wolf's head. With a roar of his own, Teo charged through the opening Victor left as he cut down the last hound.
"Land's End!"
Victor met Teo's gaze as the strike closed in, acknowledgement passing between them.
And Victor broke him.
The grand attack was shattered as Victor swung his blade, the force summoning gale force winds. Teo was thrown out of the ring and across the floor, slamming into the wall next to the still recovering Rufus.
Victor no longer wore a smirk as he regarded his defeated opponents. "Well done, both of you. Rufus, you've clearly improved from when I last saw you, and Lord Schwarzer you would be a wonderful sparring partner down the road. In fact, I wonder if this would've been so one-sided were you in your prime."
He hefted his blade onto his shoulder and looked to the spectators. "Well? What'd you think of that?"
Rean and Laura gaped, their attempt at note-taking long since abandoned.
Lucia sighed and stood. "Quite impressive, Lord Arseid. However, I must attend my husband now, so if you'll please excuse me."
Victor adopted a sheepish smile. "Oh yes, please. I apologize for sending him flying, but he forced my hand."
"High praise from the Radiant Blademaster." Lucia answered with a proud lilt in her voice. "I leave my son in your care for now. Should you have any further business with us, please let us know."
Victor nodded and looked to Klaus. "Would you take care of Lord Albarea? I've no doubt his own servants will see to him, but I wish to speak with my daughter and her paramour before we call it a day."
Klaus bowed and went to Rufus's aid, the heir of Kruezen bowing respectfully to Victor before limping out of the training hall with Klaus's help.
Lucia followed them, supporting her satisfied husband all the way. She just knew he'd start crowing the moment they were alone, so she silently waved off Rean's attempt to help once his shock wore off.
Rean and Laura watched them go before Victor cleared his throat and drew their attention. "Now then, there's something I'd like to talk to you both about."
He sheathed his blade and stepped off the dueling platform, arms crossed as he regarded the pair. "I've heard less than pleasant rumors coming from Toval and a friend of mine in the capital about your class. They say you've been meddling in military and civil affairs, along with several other groundless claims. However, one of those rumors speaks of something I want to hear from you both."
"What's this about a gauntlet?"
Rean and Laura froze, their shocked gazes all the answer Victor needed. "So, it's true then. I apologize, but it appears trouble follows you both no matter what you do. My lone question is this. Are you ok, Laura?"
Laura sighed and nodded. "I am, Father. It's taken some time to get used to my situation, but nothing's come of it yet. All I can do is keep moving forward and work it out."
"And I plan to help wherever I can." Rean added. "Of course, if she doesn't solve the issue first."
Victor nodded, smirk returning. "Good, that's all you can do right now. Laura, if you and Rean wish it, we can have you back in Trista by morning. I'm sure you'd both prefer to return to school while you still can."
"What about my parents?" Rean asked, the offer tempting. "Or Lord Albarea for that matter?"
Victor shrugged. "I want to talk more with your parents about some finer details in our trade agreement and Rufus is bound to be gone in the morning. There's an overnight train that runs to Trista with sleeper cars last I checked, a new project or some such from the tourism board."
Rean and Laura shared a considering glance. She shrugged and Rean gave the answer. "We'll take you up on that, thank you, Lord Arseid. At least now we won't be too behind on our schoolwork."
"Whole point of me offering it." Victor laughed. "Also, just for when I next see you, go ahead and drop the 'lord' formality. I can put up with it in formal settings or with Klaus, but everyone else calls me Victor."
He held out a hand, Rean taking it and shaking with a strong grip. "If you say so, Lo-… sorry, Victor. Do we need to purchase the tickets for the train, or do we just need to go to the station?"
"I'll put in the call, just gather your things and be at the station by nine." Victor said before pulling Rean close and whispering in his ear. "Also, I don't mind you calling me 'Dad'. And I expect two pairs of pattering feet in the manor before I go grey."
Laura heard that last part. "Father, for the love of the Goddess, would you stop?! It was bad enough listening to Lady Schwarzer talk about it; I don't need you getting corrupted too!"
Victor laughed and released the blushing Rean. "Hey, I'm getting up there in years and I can't spoil you anymore. I'm not saying you need to conceive on the train-"
Laura's blade appeared out of thin air and she charged her father, the older man laughing uproariously as he blocked her sloppy strikes while she cried for him to stop embarrassing her.
Rean wisely bowed out of the training hall, leaving the father and daughter to their impromptu-duel.
"They're… kind of weird." Rean muttered as he wandered back to the manor. "I mean, I had no idea Laura could ever get so flustered. Nor that the best swordsman in the Empire, if not Zemuria, could be so… silly and serious at the same time."
Klaus met him at the door, Laura's case in hand and Rean's beside him. "Ah, wondering on your paramour and her father yes? I admit, they're frank with each other, but to show it in front of you should be seen as a blessing."
He placed the case on the ground and handed Rean's to him. "Only their closest friends have seen them at their silliest. For milord to act as such in front of you and your parents, he's practically welcomed you all to the family."
Rean took the case with a sheepish smile. "You're too kind, but I can't help but wonder if they're too quick to do so. I mean, assuming everything works out as I hope, I still have to duel her."
Klaus glanced around before adopting a wise countenance. "In truth, there's been little reason to enforce that tradition for the past century. Milord and Lady Anne never dueled until after their marriage, nor did Lady Laura's grandparents. If she wishes to wed you, then the duel can be easily foregone."
Rean felt his eye twitch but left the matter to rot. "Ok then… regardless, thank you for grabbing our things. I've never been on an overnight train, so this will be an interesting experience."
"I hope it will be restful if nothing else." Klaus agreed. "Now I assume milord embarrassed his daughter into a duel of their own, so would you care for some tea while we await them? If they're not back when the bell tolls eight, I will retrieve them."
Rean accepted the offer and gathered the cases. Once Klaus had him situated, Rean started running all sorts of scenarios through his head.
Seeing Dad go all out was something else. Man, can only imagine what he'd be like if the bear hadn't injured him all those years ago. Same with Rufus, his form was flawless and pinpoint accurate, I can see why Jusis admires him in that regard.
He shook his head, still in awe at what he'd witnessed.
Yet, Lord Arseid broke both of their assaults into pieces, without even trying. I knew he was strong, to the point the rumors do him no justice, but heaven above. He could probably take on a tank battalion and win, hell maybe even an entire division.
Why anyone would seek to make an enemy out of the Radiant Blademaster, he didn't know, but now he understood the magnitude of what Laura was striving to be. The Arseid school was well known throughout the Empire as was, but she was essentially set on becoming its greatest master.
And to do that, she had to surpass her father.
That's like trying to beat Master Ka-Fai. Just mastering one of the paths in the Eight Leaves school gets you called a Divine Blade, you'd have to master all of them to surpass the founder himself.
Rean shook his head and started to compare the styles he'd seen and how they worked. Getting a first hand account from Rufus was bound to help Jusis out and he could use parts of his father's style to assist Paula and Fie with theirs.
Before he knew it, the clock chimed and he looked up to see the small hand pointing at the eight, with neither Arseid in sight.
"Are they still at it?" Rean wondered. He hadn't really been paying attention, but it was sunset when they'd gone into the hall and now it was dark out.
On cue, the main doors opened and Klaus entered, his liege following behind disheveled while Laura was a panting mess. She'd ruined her hair and make-up while her gown was all kinds of wrinkled.
"Milady!" Prana gasped as she hurried down the stairs, several towels in hand. "What have you done to your hair! And the makeup, Goddess!"
Victor adjusted his rumpled coat with a laugh. "You can blame me for that, Prana. Embarrassed her too much and we had a tussle is all. Laura, go with her and clean up, I'll meet you and Rean at the station."
Laura pouted at him and trudged towards the stairs, Prana fretting over her the whole way. Rean watched this, bemused, when Victor walked up to him and clapped his shoulder. "Klaus told me you had everything, so you can head to the station if you like."
"Thank you, but I need to say goodbye to my parents first." Rean said. "By the time Laura's ready, my mother should have stopped crushing my ribs."
Victor chuckled. "You're lucky to have parents like them. So open with their love, yet willing to let you stand alone."
He shook his head. "That last lesson's one that took me a while to learn. You saw the picture in my office I bet, but Laura's the spitting image of her mother. She threw herself into training to make me happy at first, then it became her passion and… I wasn't able to let go. Took Klaus over there beating some sense into me for that to happen."
They looked to the butler, his wise countenance still in place. "I am ever at the service of the Arseid family. Whether that be refreshments, tidying up, or delivering a swift kick to the pants."
"Love you too, Klaus." Victor drawled as he gave Rean some space. "Anyway, go give your parents a fond farewell and I'll see you at the station."
He nodded at Rean and strode toward the stairs, Klaus close behind. Rean remained seated for several moments, processing what he'd just learned, before sighing. "Small wonder he gets on so well with Mom and Dad. I'm thankful Laura's got such a loving home."
He stood and stretched before jogging up the stairs. He could hear his dad loudly describing the duel in near exaltation, so it was easy to track down the room they were in.
"Oh, Rean!" Teo greeted as his son entered the room, his body crisscrossed with compresses. "Did you take notes on that fight?"
Rean smiled sardonically. "Not after you pulled out the hounds. How the hell did you do that?"
Teo chuckled, though with hisses of pain intermixed as he stretched his bruises. "Lots… of practice with Badeaux in my youth. Laid me out though, can't move too well."
"Nor will you until morning." Lucia remanded him, stilling her squirming husband. "Rean, we'll be staying the night here to let your father recover. I assume Lord Arseid's already seen to setting up a room for you?"
She covered her mouth with a hand, voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper. "Or maybe… it's been decided you'll be sharing with Laura?"
Teo valiantly reached up to yank on her ear, Lucia yelping in pain. "Hey!"
"None of that, dear." Teo remanded right back. "I think you and the Viscount have teased the two of them enough for one day. Rean, what are your plans? I assume you'll be heading back to Thors after breakfast tomorrow."
Rean shook his head, amused. "Actually, Lord Arseid told me about an overnight train. It'll have me in Trista by morning and they're testing out sleeper cars. Something to do with the tourism board from what he told me."
"Oh, I've heard of that." Teo said, surprise clear. "They've been thinking of using them for long haul tourist parties, but I didn't think any test runs would come to Legram."
Rean shrugged. "Lord Arseid told me to meet him at the station, wanted to buy a ticket so I can be back in Trista by morning. Best guess is he wants to apologize at least a bit for getting us involved."
He was not going to mention Laura would be going with, his mom would latch onto that and never let go.
"Well that's good." Lucia sighed, clearly relieved. "This whole mess has been quite stressful; I can only imagine returning to school will be good for you."
Rean's mind turned to his classmates and the inevitable antics awaiting him. "Yeah… let's call it that. Anyway, I just wanted to let you know, I need to be at the station before long."
Lucia stood and opened her arms, Rean walking into the embrace. "Then we'll wish you well. It's been so good to see you again, Rean, and I can't wait to hear the stories you have to tell when you come back for break."
"Hopefully, anyway." Teo chuckled as he held out his hand, Rean gripping it tightly despite being trapped in his mother's arms. "I'd prefer to see you again after some time has passed and you have more stories to tell. Oh, and after I've had a conversation with your sister."
Rean heard the undercurrent of frustration and silently prayed that would go well. "I'm looking forward to it. Rest up, Dad, and I'll write again before long."
His parents smiled and let him go, though not before Lucia gave him a big kiss on the cheek, just to embarrass him.
Rean blushed and bid them farewell, jogging out of their room and down the stairs to find Laura in her casual dress and case in hand. "Oh, there you are."
"Here I am." She greeted, looking far more relaxed in the casual clothes. "Father hasn't left yet, so would you care to accompany me to the station? We have time to stroll through the town before we have to be there."
Rean nodded and offered his arm, Laura rolling her eyes but taking it all the same. Rean grabbed his case and they set off, stepping into the cool night air and following the haunting light of street-lamps shrouded by mist into town.
No one was out at this time of night, lights in windows showing the denizens had long turned in. It was just Laura and Rean in the streets, silently enjoying each other's presence as they meandered toward the station.
When they came upon the statue of the woman, Laura spoke. "That's Lianne Sandlot, the founder of the Eisenritter. You know her, right?"
"The Lance Maiden, Emperor Dreichel's closest and strongest companion." Rean answered, knowing the tale. "Her knights were said to be lightning across the field. If I recall, your ancestor was her second in command."
They stopped before the statue and stared up at it, Laura leaning her head on his shoulder. "Indeed, and her closest confidant and friend after the emperor himself. The Sandlot line ended with her, and as she'd once ruled this land, my family mourns her death every year."
"Another role model to aspire to." Rean muttered, guessing why Laura spoke with such reverence. "Though if she ruled this land, then the Eisenritter were based here."
Laura nodded and gestured to the west. "Castle Lohengrin, that was the base of the Eisenritter. None live there now, and while my family is technically charged with its maintenance, little actual work is done. It stands simply as a relic to a bygone age."
Something clicked in Rean's mind as he thought on this information. "Hey, Laura… are you trying to tell me something with all this?"
"Not really." Laura answered a tad too quickly. "I just wanted to share. Something tells me we'll be talking about this in our history class soon, so I thought to give you a head's up."
Rean hummed and let it drop for now. "Thanks, that helps a lot. Shall we keep going?"
Laura nodded and they wandered towards the station again, Laura sharing quick tales of her adventures about the town. From dueling with the other children to swimming in the lake and parties at the inn.
Rean listened with a content smile, glad to see Laura so relieved and relaxed. Once he'd learned about the reason for this meeting, it only made sense that Laura must've known about it for some time. While it didn't excuse her earlier behavior, he was at least glad one source of stress was gone.
They paused before the station doors, Laura freeing her arm and stepping away from Rean. "Well, it's about time. Ready to get some rest and dive into the madness once more?"
Rean stepped after her, catching a flash of teasing joy in her eye. "When am I not? I've got a day of gopher work waiting for me, and we all know those days are… interesting."
Laura kept stepping back from him, Rean matching her step for step. Slowly, she guided him to the side of the station and out of sight. Rean sensed no danger as she did so and was only slightly surprised when she pushed him against the wall.
"Thank you, for being here." Laura whispered, embracing him and holding him against the wall. "I never thought the Count would pull in Duke Albarea. Rufus would've arrived in the end, but I'd have been in a poor state when I returned."
Rean returned the embrace. "Anytime, but you really should thank my parents. I'd have let you do as you asked and go alone were it not for them dragging me along."
"I'll do that next I see them." Laura chuckled. "But if nothing else, I'm still thankful you came. I had a feeling Father would like you, and you presented yourself well. Having your parents aboard at the same time is a weight off my chest."
Rean nuzzled her hair, doing his best to return her affection. "My parents loved you the moment they saw that picture you sent before we went to Thors. They started dancing around the house and ran out into the town square. Got a whole party started."
Laura's ears burned, but she wore a grin as she looked Rean in the eye. "They're kind and boisterous, the latter far from your personality as can be. Still…"
She kissed him lightly.
"They raised you well."
Rean returned the kiss with a smile. "And so, did yours. Who else can say they love someone so noble and upstanding?"
"You've been getting tips from Crow." Laura chuckled as she smiled into the kiss. "All honey and no substance."
Rean pulled back with a raised brow and a smirk. "Oh, you think so? Milady, I mean every word."
Laura rolled her eyes and kissed him again, the pair enjoying themselves. Each kiss was longer and deeper than the last, Laura tilting her head just enough to better press against Rean.
They froze as Laura felt something… poke her thigh. "Rean… that's your case, right?"
Rean dearly hoped it was. "Uh… yes?"
"Is that an answer or a question?" Laura asked as she stepped back, eyes glued to Rean's face. She cleared her throat and turned around, grabbing her case after dropping it to embrace him. "Regardless, we've waited long enough, yes? Father's bound to be here soon if he isn't already."
Rean's cheeks burned as he placed his case in front of him, ruing the poor timing. Thank the Goddess the Viscount hadn't seen that.
"Ah, there you are!" Victor called as he walked out of the station. "The fog's heavy tonight, I think I walked right past you. Been waiting long?"
Laura wouldn't look at Rean, so he did his best to answer. "No, Lord Ars-Victor. We've been here only a short while."
"Long enough to suck face." Victor muttered to himself, low enough for the pair to miss it. "Anyway, come on in. The train's still boarding."
They followed him into the station and stared at the large green cars sitting on the rails. While they took in the sight, Victor strode to the cashier and ordered two tickets, a conspiratorial wink shared with the cashier before returning to the still silent pair.
"Here are your tickets." He said as he handed them out. "Pillows and blankets are provided, but you can get a few things extra if you're willing to pay for them. I covered the basics and they'll pull into Trista at six in the morning."
Laura looked over the ticket. "Um, Father? Is there a place to store our things?"
"The conductor's going to explain." Victor said with a smile. "Now hurry off before I come up with a reason to keep you here."
Laura smiled and embraced him. Then, with a respectful bow, she strode through the turnstiles and entered the train.
Rean gave a bow of his own. "Thank you for your hospitality, Lord Arseid. I'm glad we can put this entire situation behind us."
"Agreed." Victor huffed, scowling internally at the memory. "Never been so insulted in my life. Anyway, keep embarrassing her in my stead and keep up with your training. I expect you both to improve by the next time I see you."
He leaned in with a cheeky smile. "And remember, I want two."
"My mother's corrupted you." Rean deadpanned, making Victor laugh. "For Adios's sake, we're dating. For all of a few months at that, neither of us are so much as thinking about it."
Victor's grin was smug. "Says the high brain, but your hind-brain's telling a different story. I didn't earn my title without being observant."
Rean froze and flushed, mind scrambling for something to say.
"Oh, relax." Victor sighed. "I'm not going to ream you over something natural. You're both old enough to make those types of decisions, even if I'd prefer you wait until after you're both employed. Just be safe and I'll be happy."
Rean gulped. "Should… Shouldn't Laura be here for that discussion?"
Victor gave him a flat stare in return. "You and I both know what she's like. Outside the sword, she's the purest maiden in the land. She wouldn't speak to me for three weeks after Prana gave her the Talk."
Rean's blush darkened. "Lord Arseid… is this really the best time?"
"No, but that's why I'm doing it." Victor quipped. "Look, just be honest about it and everything's going to be fine. Set the boundaries and go from there."
He crossed his arms with a toothy grin. "That way no one gets upset over a stiffy."
Rean could take it no more and all but fled from the Viscount, Victor watching him run through the turnstiles with a sardonic laugh.
"What did you do to the poor boy?" Klaus asked as he entered the station. "I've only seen one run that fast before, and it was Lady Laura after Prana's talk."
Victor shrugged at his friend and confidant. "Just setting some ground rules is all, nothing serious. Oh, did you manage to put my gift in one of their cases?"
"Of course, milord." Klaus answered, unflappable as always. "Though what was in the bag if I might inquire? It certainly didn't feel like money or whetstones."
Victor didn't answer, preferring an innocent smile.
Klaus sighed and turned on his heel. "Milord, meet me in the training hall. I think it's time I fulfill my duty."
Victor cracked his knuckles, smile turning to a smirk.
Time for a real workout.
-Rean-
"Um, Laura?"
"Yes Rean?"
Rean sighed as he looked at his ticket and the bunk Laura was lying in, the curtain drawn to only show her head. "I think your father played a trick on us."
Laura hummed and took his ticket, her hair down and flowing over the edge. "Actually… you're right, the tickets match. What are we going to do now? The conductor already gave me the explanation, but we… can't just share a bed, it's not proper."
Rean glanced into the bunk, noting it was big enough to fit two. "We may not have much of a choice. If it helps, I don't toss in my sleep, so I can just squeeze into the edge and you'll never know I'm there."
Laura blushed and played with her hair. "I mean, can't we just get you one of the other beds?"
"I heard him talking over the intercom, didn't you?" Rean asked, slightly annoyed. "All the beds are reserved and they're picking up the majority of the passengers at the next stop."
"We'll just have to bear with it."
Laura flushed as she looked away, not sure how to take that news. "I… suppose you're correct. Heaven, how does Fie do this so casually?"
"No sense of personal space." Rean shot without missing a beat. "Now to make this as bearable as possible, I'll change and press myself as far into the corner as I can. That way I spare you the embarrassment."
Laura didn't look at him, a tight nod her only answer. Rean sighed and went into a cubicle to change and store his clothes before going back to the bunk and turning his back to it. "Alright, I'm good to go. You can come out and we'll get this over with."
He didn't look back as the curtain moved aside and Laura's bare feet landed on the carpet. He heard her pad away and turned to the bed in the opposite direction of her cleared throat. Without prompt, he climbed into the bunk and shimmied to the edge, making himself occupy as little space as possible.
He didn't speak as the mattress shifted and creaked, Laura climbing in and closing the curtain. Neither could close their eyes, awkward energy oozing between them as they tried and failed to relax. It was dark in the bunk, only the moon's light filtering through the haze of the fog outside the window.
Eventually, exhaustion caused Rean to doze, eyes half-lidded as the train trundled out of the station. The rocking of the cart, slight though it was, started to lull him to sleep when he felt a hand on his shoulder. "Rean?"
Rean froze as he felt the mattress shift, Laura's voice closer. "Um… I'm sorry for this, but… I need to hold something in order to sleep. Can I take your pillow?"
Rean sighed and took the pillow he was using out from under his head and held it over his back. Laura took the pillow with a whispered word of thanks and withdrew her hand. It was quiet again for a time, Rean nearly lulled to sleep again.
"Rean?"
Rean groaned as he was roused again. "What?"
His answer came as arms snaked around his chest and he was pulled towards the center of the mattress, Laura's nose buried in his shoulder. "I… I'm sorry, laying like that must be uncomfortable."
Rean patted her arm, not sure what to do. "T-That's ok. I've camped in way more cramped conditions."
Laura's hold tightened. "But you don't have to, and I can't make you. And, now that I've had time to think about it…"
Rean felt her chin settle on his shoulder and he felt compelled to look at her. Shining amber eyes met his gaze, Laura clearly as unsure as he was. "I want to see if what Fie does is just as good as she claims. Is… is that too much?"
Rean gave her a tired smile and pushed her back a bit. Laura looked disappointed, until Rean rolled over so they were face to face. "I don't mind, so long as you don't mind me laying like this."
Laura flushed and looked down, a simple night-gown her sleepwear. "Um… I think I can manage."
Rean smiled and reached out to slowly embrace her, Laura returning the embrace tentatively. Rean rested his chin on her head while Laura took courage enough to nuzzle his chest.
"Goodnight." Rean whispered as the warmth of her embrace banished his anxiety.
Laura hummed. "Goodnight."
They drifted off together, Laura's questions answered. No wonder Fie vastly preferred sleeping with Elliot. This was so… relaxing.
So relaxing in fact, when she woke up at her usual time of 5:30, she felt more energetic than usual. Seeing Rean's resting face so close to hers was a treat too, Laura taking the chance to peck his cheek and stroke his hair.
Then her other hand bumped something as she pulled out his embrace, a low hiss from Rean making her freeze.
Oh Goddess, not again.
Laura took a deep breath and very carefully freed herself. It appeared that one problem with any future arrangement like this would be their own bodily functions. Not unexpected, but certainly inconvenient, and very embarrassing.
She opened the curtain enough to slip out, her case stored in a rack at the end of the car. She grabbed it, snuck to the cubicle, and changed into her casual wear again before writing a quick note to Rean and retreating to the meal cart.
She needed something to take her mind off what she'd woken up to, and the heat it had set off.
When Rean woke up shortly after, he was perfectly fine and unaware. He found Laura's note, changed, and was in the meal cart to join her for breakfast with his things. All with a pep in his step.
Laura was slightly jealous of that pep but couldn't hold it for long as they talked about what they'd missed and if the dorm was still standing. Sure, it had been all of a day, but it was always amazing how much trouble their class could get into on a given day.
Thankfully, when the train pulled into Trista and they disembarked, there was no sign of a fire or other disaster. They were unmolested as they exited the station and walked to the dorm, the venerable building in one piece, and none were in the lobby when they entered.
Shrugging, they went to their rooms, unpacked, and changed into their uniforms. It was an off-day, but they were still required to wear the uniforms if they were going to be on campus.
It was when they got down that the madness started.
"Thank Aidios, you're back!" Alisa cried when they came down again, the entire class present. "Emma's at the end of her rope and we can't keep Paula back much longer!"
Laura and Rean blinked owlishly at that statement and took in the room. A disheveled Emma was off to the side, wearing an expression of utter defeat, while an enraged Paula was attempting to charge a cheery and hogtied Millium.
The rest of the class was staying on the margins, only Gaius and Jusis holding Paula back.
Rean took a deep breath and sighed. "Alright, I want a sitrep on the last 24 hours. Make it snappy, I don't want to deal with an upset Towa this morning."
Fie and Elliot ended up giving the explanations, Machias too busy consoling Emma while Crow kept Millum on lock-down.
Apparently, the previous morning had gone fine after Paula informed everyone Rean had been dragged off to Legram alongside Laura. Breakfast was fine, the walk was fine, even the first class was fine.
Then everything went to hell.
It was entirely Millium's fault at the end of the day. The girl just could not stay still and would constantly act out in class or passing periods. She'd call up Lammy, pester the others incessantly, and altogether make an utter nuisance of herself without a care in the world.
The worst part was she always did it with the instructor's back turned, so they couldn't catch her in the act.
It all came to a head when Sara had asked Emma to pick up Millium's student book from Towa. It was there they found out the emperor himself had pushed for Millium and Crow to join the class, much to everyone's shock. Who knew the emperor would ever do something like that?
It certainly reeked of blood and iron, that was never in doubt.
Regardless, Millium had run off before Emma could deliver the book. This led them on an hours-long, class wide chase in which Millium ran them into the ground all in the name of amusing herself.
The reason Paula wanted to kill her is because Millium had hijacked Jusis's horse and run off with it and the rider in tow, driving them around and around the field. That wouldn't have been bad if her exuberance hadn't been constantly threatening to render the horse lame and seriously injure Jusis.
Then, to wrap it all up, she'd called Lammy up in the middle of town and they had to get the many spectators out of there while Millium soaked up the attention.
To say they were upset with her did not do the situation justice.
"Ok, here's what we'll do." Rean sighed after hearing the story. "Millium, I'm going to have Sharon ban you from any and all sweets until you get it together. I understand you're excited and energetic but doing things only for yourself isn't near as fun as doing it with others."
Millium looked stricken but tilted her head in consideration. "I mean, you're all so slow, how can I do anything fun if you can't keep up?"
"It's not a matter of keeping up, it's keeping pace." Laura answered. "We may not have the same amount of energy as you, but that doesn't mean we can't keep up. We just have to work in bursts, not on a constant burn."
Millium didn't look like she fully understood. "So… I should try and have as much fun as I can in one sitting?"
"More or less." Rean hedged, trying to be careful with his wording. "Think of it this way. Trying to eat your favorite food all the time is great at first, but eventually you get sick of it. That's why you take a break and eat other things. Same situation, but with playing."
Millium's eyes brightened in understanding. "Oh! So, I should play as hard as I can at certain times, like breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Ok, that makes sense!"
It was certainly a start if nothing else. Rean clapped his hands clear of imaginary dust and looked to Paula. "I understand you're rightly upset with her but hold off until we head to group practice. I'm sure Millium would be more than willing to spar with you."
Millium nodded rapidly and Paula at last stopped trying to attack her.
"She better be ready." Paula muttered, glare still in place. "No one puts Juice or the horses in danger and gets away with it."
Rean silently prayed that they wouldn't destroy the field again before clearing his throat. "Alright, with that settled, what's the plans for today? I have no doubt there's my usual set of gopher tasks in the mailbox, but what about you guys?"
"I've got a concert with the Wind Orchestra." Elliot informed, Fie in place on his back. "We're playing in the chapel today, so if anyone has the time to pop in, it'd be appreciated."
Jusis sighed as he let Paula go. "It's my turn on stable duty, so I'll be tending the horses most of the day. Beyond that, not much to speak of."
"I've been asked to help with Alisa's practice today." Gaius said as he released Paula's other arm. "Though not until later. Right now, I plan to make some progress on a few projects."
Alisa echoed the same plans.
"Studying per usual for us." Machias called as he guided Emma up the stairs. "Emma's going to be at her club later, but we're free otherwise."
Crow started untying Millium. "I'm gonna be hanging around, just remember to let me know if you head into the Old Schoolhouse. I want my own crack at the place."
"Same!" Millium shouted as she popped free. "I have to fill all kinds of reports about it, so the sooner the better!"
The class was non-plussed at her exuberant revelation, everyone slowly splitting off to start their days. Laura tapped Rean's shoulder and passed him a stop-watch. "If you have time, stop by the Swimming Club and time me. I need to see how I'm doing against Monica's recent runs."
Rean shook his head with a grin. "Sure, If I find it. Who knows what Towa's sent my way?"
Laura returned the grin and strode out of the dorm. Rean took a moment to look around and take in the atmosphere before steeling his nerves and going to his mailbox. He opened it, found the usual letter, opened it, and read.
…
"Well, never thought Beryl of all people would request something." Rean sighed after finishing. "Oh well, it's been a while since I got to go around and talk to everyone in town. May as well use the time."
He set off into the outdoors with a skip in his step. He had a feeling today would be great for catching up with everyone before getting dragged into the usual strange tasks he ran into so often.
Something told him the pool would be involved.
-Gaius-
How in the hell had this happened?
The morning had started easily enough. Rean and Laura were back, their business concluded, and everything looked to be going as normal.
Then he accompanied Alisa to the field to help with lacrosse practice, only for Ferris to challenge Alisa once again. It should've been a simple race, 50 arge all told, but Feris demanded a rematch despite Alisa's marginal victory in the competition.
Then another rematch…and another… and another.
This repeated several times, Alisa the winner of each, until both were bent over panting.
"Alisa is the winner once again." Emily said with a smile, apparently enjoying this.
Ferris's head whipped up, indignation in her eyes. "No, I refuse to accept it!"
"Can't… argue the result." Alisa panted. "But… wow, you're… so much faster. Really… putting in the hours… huh?"
Ferris's eyes attempted to burn her alive. "You can't keep winning like this! I've put in so much work, there's no way you should be winning!"
Alisa looked to her clubmate with a frown. "You're… not the only one who trains."
"It was a good match, as were the ones before." Gaius interjected. "For now, you should both rest. There's still regular practice after all."
Ferris's ire turned to him. "Don't attempt to belittle me, Nord!"
She found the strength to stand and ran off. "I refuse to accept this! I can't accept this!"
No one chased her at first, stunned by her stubbornness, before Gaius got their heads on straight. "We need to go after her. Being emotional like that may put her in danger."
Alisa and Emily agreed, but no matter where they looked or who they asked, Ferris was nowhere to be found. Emily realized she must not be on campus anymore, at which point she told them to search the west side of town while she took the east.
It was on the west highway they found her, surrounded by slavering wolves and crying for her brother. Right as they arrived, she caved and called for Alisa's help.
Alisa answered by planting a bolt into one of the wolves.
"Alisa!" Ferris gasped as Alisa rained arrows on the wolves, forcing the pack to back off from Ferris. "W-What?"
Gaius leapt in front of Ferris; spear brandished in open challenge. "Come then, if you think me an easy meal!"
The wolves snarled but slowly retreated. Alisa had injured several of them and they didn't fancy their odds against Gaius's spear.
Once they were gone, Ferris sank to her knees, hiccupping in relief. Alisa was by her side immediately. "Ferris, are you ok?! Geez, you had to choose the highway to do your sulking, and without your bow at that!"
"D-don't belittle me!" Ferris squeaked, somehow still mad despite her immense relief. "That's what you came to do isn't it!"
Alisa wanted desperately to slap her. "That is the last thing on my mind right now! I want to know if my friend's ok, so can I talk to her please?"
Ferris looked stunned, Alisa sighing at her disbelief. "Is it really so hard to believe I want to be friends with you? For heaven's sake, we both like what we do, we share a lot of interests, so why can't we just be friends?"
Ferris bit her lip and looked away. "I… as a member of the Florald family cannot be lesser to a commoner. It has been drilled into me ever since I could walk, and my pride will simply not allow it. Even if I want to be friends."
"That should be no obstacle, especially if you want to be friendly rivals." Gaius advised, making Ferris look at him. "Continue to compete, that will satisfy your pride, but be friends off the field. And if you try to play the family card, look at Jusis. He's dating a commoner and he's damn serious about it. If he can break that taboo, you can be friends with Alisa."
Ferris worked her jaw before nodding. "Alright… you're correct, both of you. I apologize for being such a nuisance, Alisa, I hope you can forgive me."
Alisa waved off the apology. "It's fine! Competition's fine between friends, trust me, so let's do our best from here on."
She smiled at Ferris, a tad sheepish. "We'll have to. You running off like that has Emily beyond worried. We'll be stuck on clean-up for a month I bet."
Ferris's face morphed into a visage of horror, her hand shooting out to grab Alisa's arm. She proceeded to drag her new friend back to town, trying desperately to come up with something that would get them out of clean-up duty for so long.
Gaius watched them go with an amused smile. It was always nice to resolve conflict peacefully, especially something that had been eating at Alisa ever since she'd joined the club. Hard to see how the day could go much better.
He shrugged and set off for the field. They'd need a cool head for when Emily inevitably blew up on them, so best get on the way.
-Machias-
"Why are we looking for Celine again?"
Machias's question wasn't unwarranted. He'd been practicing chess with Stephen during a break in his studies only to have Emma burst into the room with Millium at her heels. They started asking about a cat with a blue tail-ribbon, but Machias hadn't had the chance to answer before being dragged out to assist.
"She was just sitting on my lap when Millium came by." Emma explained as she looked through a bush. "Millium wanted to pet her, but she scared Celine. Haven't seen her since."
Millium dropped out a tree nearby. "I didn't mean to! I just got so excited and she looked so cool, I couldn't help myself!"
"Launching yourself at a cat is a poor way to pet them." Emma scolded, Millium pouting in answer. "And to be honest, since you scared her, she may not come out with you around. Machias, I'm sorry for dragging you away, but can you take Millium into town? I'll call your ARCUS if I find Celine."
Machias scowled, but Emma set off to search another area. With that avenue cut off, Machias grumbled and waved for Millium to follow him. "Come on, may as well see if there's something to do in town."
Millium lost her pout and skipped after him. "Hey, can we shop? I need to pick up a few things."
Machias grunted, not caring.
Millium took that as a yes and ran off, Machias giving chase with a groan. Much to his surprise, the pursuit ended with them inside the boutique, Millium glancing around. "Why here?"
"I need some normal clothes." Millium chirped as her eyes took in the wares. "Don't have much beyond my uniform and work clothes."
Machias grimaced as he recalled what Millium wore for 'work'. "If you call that work clothes, but I see what you mean. Alright, take a look around and pick out what you like. Probably shouldn't ask me for tips though, I'm useless with women's clothes."
Millium happily ignored him and set about browsing, constantly asking his opinion on different items and clothes despite his every exasperated reminder. He also had to prevent Lammy from joining the 'fun', but Millium took her time to tease him when she went about trying things on.
Machias would never forget the stink-eye the receptionist gave him when Millium held up a see-through camisole. Why did Millium even know what the hell that thing was?
Regardless, it was with great relief the boutique's door opened and admitted Emma, Celine held in her arms. "Oh, there you two are! I've been trying to call for a while."
Machias sighed and waved. "Couldn't hear the ring over this ball of lightning. Forced me to sit here and watch her model different hair bands."
Emma giggled and walked over to join him right as the changing stall's curtain parted to show Millium in a pair of hot-pants and a t-shirt. "Heyo! Oh, kitty!"
Emma froze her in place with a glare that could melt iron. "Do. Not. Jump."
Millium straightened, already coiled up to do just that. "Right… sorry."
Machias noted Celine relax immediately. "Well, can't say I blame her. Celine is said to have the softest fur in all of Trista."
Celine yowled as Milium leapt forward and snatched her out of Emma's arms. While the cat attempted to free herself from a very aggressive petting, Emma raised a brow at Machias. "And what did she do to deserve such punishment?"
"Spilled my coffee and bit my hand when I tried to give her a snack." Machias answered, a satisfied smirk on his lips. "Had the gall to come up again the day after to demand another one."
Emma's brow lowered and she smiled. "I see… Millium, Celine really likes it when you scratch her back, make sure it's nice and firm."
Millium gave the ok and stroked hard, eliciting another yowl from Celine. "Wow, she has a real weird way of purring."
Emma merely smiled at her. "It's ok. Just be careful if you get a bad spot, she may scratch you."
Millum giggled and continued to dole out Celine's punishment, all while Machias gave the scene an amused stare. "…She's taking over for Fie, isn't she?"
"Sad, but true." Emma confirmed with a fond sigh. "With Elliot unknowingly taking her away, I have to find another surrogate little sister. Millium though… well, I'll need some help. Do you mind?"
Machias hummed, Celine freeing herself at last and fleeing with Millium in hot pursuit.
…Well, it'd never be boring. And he could spend more time with Emma than just the study sessions and meals.
"Sure."
-Fie-
"What happened to you?"
Fie was standing to the side of the chapel, gazing curiously at Hibelle and his cast-encased arm. "Last I checked, you didn't have a broken arm."
"I'd rather not say." The second-year muttered as he watched his fellows set up for the coming concert. "So why don't you tell me why you're here? Distracting Elliot?"
Fie shrugged, eyes turning to Elliot. "Not really. I don't have much to do today, but he mentioned the concert. Thought it'd be nice to drop by, considering I sit in on his practice so often."
Hibelle huffed, exasperated. "Sure, let's call it that. Anyway, I've done all I can to prep them for this. Now, it's up to them."
He leaned against the wall, looking to his fellow performers with clear pride. Fie hid a smile and pushed off the wall, giving quiet encouragements to Bridget and Mint before walking up to Elliot. "Nervous?"
"Lot of people." Elliot chuckled. "Most I've ever played for are you guys and the monsters we're fighting. This is different, with me as the lead violinist now."
Fie tilted her head and glanced into the audience, spotting Alan and Rean towards the back chatting. "Well, I don't mind hearing out your nerves if you want. May as well pay you back for all those times I crashed practice time."
Elliot shook his head. "And using me as your personal steed, along with running me all over Heimdallr. I don't mind talking, just let me tune."
Fie smiled and let him tune, the soothing sound of his violin washing over their corner. As he tuned, Fie's sharp eyes noted the lines of nervousness in his face fade, alongside the tension around his eyes.
When he was done, Elliot regarded her curiously. "What's got you grinning? Remember the peach cobbler Sharon promised for tonight?"
Fie's grin grew. "That, but also how confident you look. I remember you quivering like a new-born not too long ago, but now you look… refreshed, I guess. Like some itch finally got scratched."
"That's thanks to the last field study." Elliot stated, his sure words complimenting his grin. "Seeing my friends from the Music Academy and talking to my sister again did a lot to help me let go of my uncertainties. You were especially helpful with that pep-talk before you went off and dueled Laura."
Fie felt an uncharacteristically shy smile rise on her lips, heart speeding a bit at his praise. "Ah, you just needed a bit of a kick is all, no need to think much of it."
"N-No, quite the opposite!" Elliot sputtered, suddenly blushing. "Really, I appreciate you talking to me a lot. You're… honest with your opinions, and it helps me stop overthinking things."
Fie felt like there was more to say, but Elliot glanced over her shoulder and put on his game-face. "Time to go?"
"Yeah, we're about to start." Elliot confirmed. "Hey, thanks for another pep-talk. You're actually pretty good at them."
Fie shrugged and spun around to find a seat. "Knock-em dead. Should probably head back after this though, there's rain in our future."
Elliot blinked in confusion, but Fie had already walked away. Deciding to drop it, Elliot walked over to his fellow performers for a last minute meeting.
Fie sauntered over to one of the pews and sat next to Rean, her friend sporting a smile. "Good talk?"
"About as well as you could ask, Mr. Bleeding-Heart." Fie shot back. "When are we heading into the creepy basement?"
Rean shrugged as the performers took their spots. "Still have a few things to take care of, but it should be within the next couple hours. For now, let's see what Elliot's got in store."
Fie nodded and settled in for the performance, eyes glued to Elliot as the music filled the air.
Not a bad way to spend the rest of the morning.
-Paula-
"What are you doing here, Crow?"
Paula was visiting friends in the lower-class dormitories that morning, Jusis shooing her from the stables with barely an explanation when she'd gone over to help (and hopefully sneak in a snog-session). Much to her surprise, one of the newest Sevens was here too.
"Oh, Dern, heya." Crow greeted as he looked to the stairs, Paula walking down to meet him. "Just came by to pick up a few things from my old room. Swear I grabbed everything, but apparently not."
Paula raised a brow in question. "Really? Need any help with that? I got time."
"I won't turn down someone." Crow chuckled. "And having a first-year at your beck and call sounds lovely, though I'm sure noble-boy would run me through if he heard that. Wish Rean would walk through that door, but he did his rounds here before I showed up."
Paula rolled her eyes, but didn't get to speak as a pair of second-years walked down the stairs. "Hey, Crow! What are you doing here, didn't they kick you out?"
"As if anyone wants to get rid of me!" Crow shot back. "Besides, you don't want me gone. That'd absolve me of… actually maybe I should go ask for the principal to expel me."
One of the second years glowered at him. "And make Towa upset? You and I both know there's not enough brass in your balls to commit that sin."
Crow shrugged and the other second year looked at Paula. "Oh, Dern. Forgot you got sucked into the new class too. Crow here being his usual self?"
"Already conned everyone in the dorm out of at least a thousand mira total." Paula answered without skipping a beat. "Except me, I was already wise to him. Said he needed help getting some things, and I got time."
The second-years looked at each other and nodded. One set off up the stairs again while the other gave their answer. "We'll get the gang together and help. At least we can purge the dorms of his presence now."
Crow held his chest in faux-pain, only to laugh. Everyone else laughed with him and Paula found herself swept up in the flow as several more second-years arrived. They swiftly grabbed the remainder of Crow's things from his old room, purified the threshold with salt, and carried it to his new room.
Once all was said and done, Paula watched the second-years bid farewell to Crow. Once they were gone, she looked to the new Seven. "I'm still surprised at how popular you are."
"I've been here two years, and with Towa at that." Crow stated. "And with my winning personality, it's only natural I know people. Who knows, maybe you'll be as popular as me one day."
Paula slugged his arm. "Please, I 'd have to be you for that to happen. Besides, I don't make friends by losing out on the races."
Crow shrugged in defeat. "Well, thanks for helping regardless. Still freaks me out seeing you lift an entire shelf with one arm."
"I've had to yank foals out of their mothers with a chain, a shelf's nothing." Paula drawled, leaving with a smirk as Crow grimaced at the image. "Anyway, I'll see you later. Remember, Rean's going to call us at some point to head for the Old Schoolhouse."
She barely heard his goodbye before she was down the stairs and on the street, a curious sight greeting her. "Juice?"
Jusis was before her astride his steed, Paula's preferred horse tied behind him with a basket hanging off her saddle. "Your timing is, as always, impeccable. I was coming by to change, but it appears there's no need of that."
Paula's hands came together, a smile bursting to life. "Is this a picnic? Gosh, Juice, you shouldn't have!"
"I didn't wander off on our rides with Lambert because I felt like it." Jusis replied, usual smirk in place. "I found a lovely spot for us to enjoy a private lunch, and I convinced Sharon to let me make our favorites. Apologies for keeping you out of the stables, but I wanted to surprise you."
Paula cheered and almost jumped into the open saddle waiting for her. "Then let's go! It's a lovely day, and we'll want our fill for the expedition."
Jusis nodded and untied her horse, the couple cantering out of the town and onto the highway. Jusis led the way, harmless chatter about school-work training flowing between them. For a while, they just relaxed on the ride, the few monsters minding their own business.
Then Jusis stopped before a low hill with a small copse of trees and dismounted. "Here we are. Nice shade, perfect view of nature, a pleasant breeze."
"And not a soul in sight." Paula laughed as she dismounted and grabbed the picnic basket. "Perfect for a first date. Good choice, Juice."
Jusis coughed, a light blush on his cheeks. "Well, after the disaster that was Rean and Laura's first outing, I've done all I could to make this worthwhile."
"So long as you haven't hidden a near-death experience, I think we'll be fine." Paula giggled.
For the next while they found a spot, set out the blanket, and prepared their food. All the while chatting about more inane topics and altogether relaxing. It was a nice time, and the slight breeze rustling the trees agreed.
"How's your back?" Jusis asked after they'd polished off the main course. "I know it's been hard hiding the… new addition."
Paula sighed and leaned back; hands curled in the soft grass. "It's been dormant, nothing to talk about. Ever since I saw that… thing back in Heimdallr, nothing strange has happened."
Jusis couldn't help but sigh in relief. "That's good to hear. I admit to being more than a little anxious about taking you on the expedition today, but… well, you'd force your way in, wouldn't you?"
Paula giggled and flopped onto the grass, content to stare at the sky through the leaves above. "You know me so well."
They laid on the grass for a time, soaking in the peaceful air, only for a dull roar to break the tranquility.
"What's that?" Jusis wondered as he sat up, glancing to highway. "It's coming from Trista."
Paula sat up and squinted back the way they came. "It… looks like some kind of machine. Wait, is that Rean?"
Jusis said nothing as the machine roared past them, Rean's familiar face directing the steel beast while a head of braided brown hair sat in a small car next to him. Nothing was said as that pair vanished into the distance.
"Well that was something." Paula cracked. "Is that the thing George and Angie are always working on?"
Jusis relaxed and nodded. "I believe so, and with a new addition. Looks like that mad contraption can carry two fools to their doom."
Paula adopted a mischievous grin and crawled over to Jusis, as silent as she could manage with his attention on the horizon. Once in range, she pounced on him with a laugh.
Jusis yelped as Paula's weight hit his back, sending the both of them rolling down the hill. Jusis ended up with his back in the grass and Paula over him, their uniforms stained and rumpled from the tumble. "Why… did you do that?"
Paula giggled sheepishly. "Sorry… wasn't expecting you to be that off balance. Just wanted to snuggle in the grass and take a nap before we had to head back."
Jusis smiled. "A nap doesn't sound too bad. Only problem with that is Rean's inevitable return waking us up."
Paula leaned down to peck his cheek. "Then we'll wait for him to go by, then we'll cuddle. Are you just looking for an excuse to not get showered in affection?"
"I believe a bit of peace is something to be desired." Jusis countered with a chuckle. "I recall showing you more than enough affection not long ago."
Paula rolled off him and grabbed his hand. "That was a lovely party, I'm glad you convinced me to pack for it. Still, that doesn't mean I can't do something lovey-dovey and embarrass the crap out of you."
Jusis gave a long-suffering sigh, blunted by his grin. "It seems I cannot stop you. Whatever will I do about the scandal?"
Paula rolled into him, Jusis tilting his head to look her in the eye. "I'm sure you'll think of something. Like, say, telling them to fuck off?"
"Must you be so crass?" Jusis chuckled, only to be silenced as Paula kissed him. Again, they lay there for a time, trading kisses and smiles as the lazy wind passed them by.
Slowly, they started to nod off, lulled by the warm air and comfort of the soft grass, only to hear a familiar roar returning.
Jusis sighed and sat up again, Paula following with a pout. "We should probably head back. Knowing Rean, we're bound to get the call before long."
"I will get that cuddle-nap with you someday." Paula sighed, saddened by the lost chance. "Though at least I'm not Fie, right?"
Jusis barked a laugh and stood, helping Paula to her feet before answering. "Yes, well, Fie is quite frankly emotionally stunted. I'd be quite concerned if you snuck into my room at odd hours and in varying states of dress."
"She's not that bad anymore at least." Paula giggled. "Sure, she still sneaks into his room, but at least it's always in correct sleep-wear."
She glanced at him, voice taking on a husky tone. "Though… are you sure me showing up like that would be so bad?"
Jusis looked to her with great alarm in his eyes. "Excuse me?"
Paula lost the tone for a mischievous comeback. "Ha! You wish that'd happen, Juice. Come on, I need to hack apart some bastards before I can call the day done."
She winked and skipped up the hill to start cleaning, Jusis watching her as Rean and his passenger roared past once more.
What was that about?
-Laura-
"What an odd situation."
Laura's observation made Rean slump. He'd come by to help time her as promised, only to find himself a lead as Monica went for her goal of fifty arge. He had to change before they could start but seeing everyone cheering for Monica did his heart good.
Especially seeing Laura, who practically glowed with pride as Monica reached her goal. Her coaching had helped the other girl tremendously, and Monica made sure to show it by giving Laura a big hug.
Laura then thanked Rean for his help, sneaking in a peck to his cheek when no one was looking. After that, she started her own training, Rean acting as timer and challenger as needed. Everything started getting strange when Sara walked in with the ladies of Class VII in tow.
To summarize, Sara had found out about Neithardt's 'training' session for the guys and decided to hold one of her own, with Rean getting roped in to spill the 'secret' techniques he'd been taught.
Except there was no secret besides competition, so Rean was currently about to race Laura.
"Enough dallying you two, let's go!" Sara hollered from her place between the diving platforms. "Rean, I know you got another request today, so hurry it up!"
Laura smirked at him and took her position. "How's this? Loser has to pay for the subscriptions two months in a row."
"I am not paying for the Mishy Fanclub." Rean shot. "But you'll be paying for Sword Forge by the end of this."
Laura smirked in answer and turned her attention to the pool. Rean did too, finally taking his position.
"After far too long," Sara drawled, "off we go. Ready… 1, 2, …3!"
The couple dived into the water and surged across it with all their strength. They pushed themselves as hard as possible, the winner decided by a lone hair.
"Yes!" Rean cheered when his victory was announced. "Two months of magazines for this guy!"
Laura rolled her eyes at him. "Such a petty prize for your victory, but I see the merits in this practice. Maybe I should have you race me more often?"
Rean almost answered before she ghosted towards him and wrapped her arms over his shoulders. Rean had barely a moment to think before she pushed them into the water and kissed him in the same motion.
The spectators watched the couple make-out underwater with unimpressed stares.
"They're rather saccharine today." Sara commented with her usual flippant tone. "Wonder what went down in Legram?"
Millium had a more immediate concern. "Don't they need to breathe?"
"They'll be up in a minute." Fie answered with a yawn. "Now are we going to do this or can we head off to prep for the expedition?"
Sara shrugged and gestured to the end of the pool… where Rean and Laura were still under and sucking face. "When they deign to join us, we'll get back to business. Much as I'd love to embarrass them, I'm curious how long they can stay under."
A moment later, the couple surface with Rean sporting a luminous blush.
"Almost forty seconds." Alisa muttered, showing the stopwatch she'd procured to Emma. "That's a new record."
Emma giggled as Laura teased Rean in the most polite and knightly way possible. "I'm just so glad to see them back at it. Saccharine should be their base, not what they were during the fight."
Paula sighed and rubbed at her back; swimsuit slightly raised over the thing in her back. "Well regardless, I want to do something. I'm itching to get the expedition on track."
Unknown to them all, a slight glow shown through the thin cloth, the orb buried in Paula's back silently flowing with energy.
And a hideous laugh echoed through the depths of her mind.
Ch. End
Finally, it is done. I'm sorry ladies and gents for taking so damned long, but I hope to be more active for the next little while.
In other news, I tried my hand at another lemon. Got dared by a friend of mine, so I gave it my best shot. It's over on Archive of Our Own in the interest of not violating rules, so pop over there if you like. I'm Gallian_Squad_7 over there.
Now, reviews!
Valiant Chord: I'm beyond flattered and glad to see a new writer. Take any criticism with a grain of salt when you get it, most want to help you in some way. Best advice I can give and I hope you enjoy the new chapter!
Yoheer: Rufus can be plenty awesome as we well know, but it's always fun seeing Victor lay into some fools. Hope you enjoy the duel and chapter at large!
Heero de Fanel: I'm glad you enjoyed and hope you enjoy the chapter here too! Especially Machias and Emma taking charge of Millum!
Tsyne-Oblivion: I want to write that actually, where they get into a drinking game over praising their kids and it turns into this massive mess when they get smashed from it.
Ashen Messenger: Glad to see you and hope you're still enjoying!
PendragonZ0R: Welcome to the story and I hope you continue to enjoy!
HaoHansuke: Glad to have you and I hope you enjoy the newest chapter.
Camperor: Thinking about it, he'd be fun to add, even if just in passing.
That's all folks, again I apologize for the long wait. See you all next time!
