Chapter 29
*Dorene's POV*
I sat on the floor the items I spent a few hours buying laying next to me and still refused to get up when Gavner woke up. Even when he knelt down next to me I refused to look at him or even acknowledge he was there. In the end Gavner just decided to leave me be and made his own meal and packed the food up into my bag and even the rest of my stuff without me noticing.
Finally I could take it no longer and I slowly and unsteadily got up off the floor and walked over to the table where Gavner was still sitting and I noticed that he even set out a place for me with a few pieces of toast and two eggs.
"Thanks Gavner." Was all I could manage to say as I sat down and pushed the plate of food away from me as I rested my head on the table with my arms outstretched. Gavner continued eating and left me be.
"I packed your stuff for you." Gavner stated when his mouth was clear of food and all I managed was a mumbled yeah as the room went back to silence.
"You do know that means we are moving again, Right?" Again I just mumbled a reply into the table and the room went back to silence, which was something that really never happened between Gavner and I, but he seems to get my need for silence and just his company which I am very thankful for.
After a few more minutes of silence I finally got sick of the silence. "So when are we leaving?" I ask as I begin eating the cold meal before me.
The answer came soon enough because as soon as I finished eating Gavner stood and announced that we were heading out once all our stuff was on our backs and he wanted us to be outside and ready to go in five.
The two of us than travel through the night and every time we take a break or truly every time Gavner takes a break my mind goes to Steve and I try to figure out his motives behind blackmailing me but I always come to the same conclusion. I will have no hope of figuring out this deluded boys mind unless I ask his ex-best friend about what happened when he became a vampire.
At one point during the night I must have fallen asleep because next thing I know I wake up on a bed starring up at a plain white ceiling. I walk to the window to see if I can recognize any of the surroundings and to my horror find myself in the town that I turned my back on swearing to never come back let along think about it and yet here I am starring at so many familiar faces and once again I lose the ability to breath as I fall to the ground panting for air.
'Why were we here? Why did Gavner think that this was a good spot to come?' I look around the small room and notice that in the other bed Gavner is sound asleep and once again snoring like a bear in the middle of winter.
'Shit I can't wake him up now.' I mutter to myself under my breath. And then the rest of the day passes with me kneeling right under the window sill refusing to look out it at the fear that someone will notice and recognize me.
Finally night comes and I hear Gavner grunting as he turns to his side and slowly wakes up. I take a chance and glance out the window seeing to my joy that the streets are clear and so slowly I get up and begin making Gavner and I our meal. Thinking to myself that I have had enough of hiding, but in truth I'm still too afraid at the thought of being caught and returned.
So instead I just settle for going out with Gavner tonight to drink and then hightail it back to the hotel room to get back to my hiding once again. But I knew I couldn't live a normal life if this continued on the road that it was going. I sigh as I watch Gavner finish his 'meal' and then moves to the side so that I may get a drink before he closes the small incision on the man's upper arm.
I finish and shuffle back a few feet to give Gavner room to seal the small minuscule cut than the two of us begin making our relaxed way back to the hotel taking our time due to the fact that I don't have to worry about people seeing me and recognizing me.
'Huh I think night time is my favorite time now.' I think to myself as Gavner and I continue our slow pace under the canopy of trees of the city park that I remember so many summer days spent here with friends and even during school I would hide in the trees instead of going to class for the many hours of ridicule and torture that I would've had to put up with. As I continue down this thought I don't notice that Gavner had taken a seat on one of the park benches that were in a dire need of a new paint job.
"Dorene, why don't you sit down and relax." I stop and stare at Gavner as he pats the seat next to him, again I sigh but see no way around it so I just sat down on the splintering wood of the bench and my shoulders sag as I wait for the coming conversation. Oddly enough no words come out of his mouth and we just end up sitting in silence.
I look up to the sky and struggle to suppress a yawn as I stare at the stars that dot the sky everywhere you look. I think that this was the one thing that I truly liked about this small town is the fact that once the sun disappeared below the horizon the stars and the stars dominated the sky and then I think back to when I lived here again and think about how whenever I didn't want to be at home I would sneak out through my bedroom window and race to this very park and either hide in the trees and or sit under one of the them or lay down on one of the park benches, but no matter where I sat my gaze would always return to the sky and the next thing I knew I was yawning and them I fell asleep in the park and woke up cold and dirty in the morning but happy.
I look to Gavner and find him starring up at the sky and the dozens of stars as well. "You know what's amazing?" Gavner asks, but I can't quite tell if he wants me to answer or not. In the end I don't need to answer because he continues. "The fact even though every night you look up and see the same stars they always in some way or another seem completely different than the ones you saw the night before."
I stare at Gavner unsure of what to think about his outburst but decide to just leave him be and return my gaze back up to the stars.
*Victoria*
I looked around the now lit up city that was still preparing for the every approaching Christmas letting my mind wonder for the fifth time today as of where Mia and Evra were, but I didn't allow myself to keep on that thought and instead focused on the snow in my hand that I was now packing tightly into a snow ball.
The target of this small ball of frozen water was a few feet ahead of me, talking to his girlfriend. Now I know they wanted to hang out alone but I refused to stay at the hotel alone. Darren agreed to take me with him and Debbie didn't seem to mind but I was still irritated at Darren for not telling me where Mia and Evra went and why they weren't back yet.
With that last thought going through my mind I pull my arm back and release the snowball, which sails through the air and hits its target in the back of the head. Debbie turns and catches my eye as my arm falls back to my side as Darren gets over his initial shock and turns to glare at me.
"Victoria, what the hell was that for?" Darren asks as he brushes the snow off of his shoulders and the back of his head. Debbie begins to giggle and I let a smile escape my lips as I stare at him and shrug.
"Sorry Darren but you were ignoring me." I state in a slightly childish voice one that I knew would've worked on Mia or Evra but sadly Darren was neither of them and he didn't fall for it. Darren whispered something in Debbie's ear and then walked towards me a caring look on his face, unlike the one of anger that I thought I would've seen.
Darren stopped in front of me and kneeled on the cold snow covered ground and looked me in the eye even though I tried to avert my gaze from his. "Victoria I know that you are feeling left out but as much I want to tell you what is going on I can't." Darren stated and finally I met his gaze taking in what he just told me.
"Why can't you tell me Darren?" I practically begged. He just looked at me and I could see in his eyes that he was debating of whether to tell me or not, but then he nodded and I released the breath that I didn't know I was holding, my shoulders sagged as I realized he wouldn't be telling me anything.
The day continued like that but abruptly ended when Debbie asked about us coming over for Christmas dinner the following night and with that Darren ran leaving me to catch up. As I began running Debbie caught my arm and asked me to try and convince Darren to come over for Christmas dinner.
"Sorry Debbie but I can't make any promises cause he has been a little off lately." I yelled back to Debbie as I ran to catch up to Darren. I caught up to Darren and found him walking dejectedly down an empty alley. I began reaching out my hand to grab his sleeve when suddenly an ugly and nasty voice slithered out from a nearby sewer grate.
"Hey. Darren Shan. I like your girlfriend. A very tasty dish…."
The thing in the sewer paused as if thinking about what to say next but the alley was not devoid of its voice for long.
"Much tastier looking than your other friend the Snake-Boy hmmmm?"
When I heard this my mind began racing at the mention of a Snake-Boy, was this sewer beast talking about Evra, but if that was true than what about Mia? I was pulled out of that train of thought when Darren with un-human strength pulled the sewer gate out of the ground and jumped down leaving me watching from the edge of the hole.
Down below in the shadows of the sewer I saw a large shape but what I saw ended there, but I soon got a name to the creature when Darren yelled from down below, taking a step forward. "Murlough!"
Suddenly Darren stopped in his tracks as the creature spoke again and the more I heard his voice the more I hated the thing it belonged to.
"Back, boy, Back, any closer and that'll be the end of Snakey…" I wanted to jump into the sewer and demand the creature tell me where it was keeping Evra but I was so scared my legs wouldn't listen to me and my hands had a death grip on the edge of the sewer.
Darren because yelling about how Evra was still alive and I finally began connecting the dots as the conversation continued, but I just kept getting new questions like where was Mia.
The beast suddenly produced its hands from behind its back and in one hand I noticed something small shining and in the other all I could see was a large mass draped over its hand.
"Do you recognize these?" The creature asked and I saw Darren's expressions change to one of shock and pain.
The creature tossed the small shining trinkets to Darren's feet and simple stated that they were Snakey's scales and then it tossed the large mass from its other hands and I recognized it as the large light mud brown braid that I worked so hard on to get perfect and the creature stated that it was Mousey's.
I stared at the braid and the scales in shock and horror at the thought of the beast tearing the scales from Evra and all the pain that it could be inflicting of Mia and I began freaking out over the thoughts of the whole thing and how my friends were probably dying in the dark tunnels.
A.N. So yeah this chapter was actually going to have Mia in it but I have this thing about typing long chapters I mean I love reading them it is just that I hate typing them and this chapter as of now is a little more than four pages and that is usually my limit. So yeah for those of you who wanted an update here you go.
Until next time Peace, Love, and Virtual Hugs
