Chapter twenty-nine: Career choices.
Time had flown by since the emotional depart from Hogwarts. Harry and Draco regularly visited their closest friends, and they were often visited by the same crowd. Blaise and Luna had barely left their sides.
2 weeks after graduation, Draco had taken a huge step and asked if Harry, the love of his life, would move in with him. After a bout of excited and nervous bouncing, Harry had readily agreed. What followed next was a massive row as to where exactly they both were going to live.
Draco wanted Malfoy Manor, of course, and Harry was torn between his new, very large and very posh home and his Godfathers house at Grimmauld place. Blaise jokingly offered the treehouse he made when he was a child (that had obviously been built and kept with magic) but he had shut up when his two best friends shot daggers in his direction.
Narcissa didn't want to be left alone in her huge mansion, and she tried hinting to Harry that her Son's choice, was of course, the best one. Harry just raised his eyebrow and grinned at the beautiful Slytherin Woman. Melinda suggested them buying a home together and Fred and George helpfully pointed out that as long as there was somewhere to shag, there wouldn't be any problem whatsoever.
After a few weeks of carefully deliberation, they decided that they would spend time at all three homes until they chose what job they wanted to go into, and until they had found the perfect place to buy. Draco knew Harry wanted to spend as much time as possible in his new home and the Gryffindor had spent hours and hours in the vast library finding out about his ancestors that he had known nothing about.
Halloween was fast approaching and Harry still had no idea what he wanted to do for a job. Draco had just started a Potions Mastery course, Luna was working in publishing with her Father and Blaise was testing the waters in a variety of different things (so far he had worked a week in Romania with Charlie Weasley and the Dragons and a week learning about Curse Breaking at Grignotts with the eldest Weasley, Bill. Harry was surprised he didn't want to go into Herbology, or something to do with the Earth. Luna and Draco on the other hand didn't surprise him at all.)
None of the four really needed to work, as between them they were the richest people in Europe and possibly the world, but they didn't like to sit doing nothing all day. Narcissa and Melinda had raised their perfect eyebrows at this. There was nothing wrong with not working they had said, it gave the person in question more time to socialize, go to lunch and arrange charity events and parties.
Blaise had scoffed at that and received a swift cuff round the ear. He apologized with a grin and winked at his friends.
The Gryffindor had a few letters asking him to join some quidditch team or another, and although he knew he was super skilled on a broom, he knew they only wanted him for his name. He grumbled and moaned to Draco for days about that.
Then one day, a few days before Christmas, it came to him.
'I know what I want to be.' He said decisively, at breakfast. Narcissa and Draco looked up at him and smiled.
'At last!' Draco snorted.
'Draco. Manners. And what might that be Harry dear? You've obviously given it some thought.'
'Yep. I would like to be a Healer. I want to help people, I always have, but I'm fed up of my life always being in danger. I'm bored of dark wizards, and I want something hands on, challenging, yet rewarding.'
'Oh Harry that's wonderful! Such a noble thing to do!' Narcissa beamed.
'And where did that come from?' Draco grinned. He was happy Harry had finally made up his mind but he was sure the raven haired boy would go for the quidditch/auror route, not that he was complaining, he never wanted Harry to feel pain ever again.
'Why, my hero complex of course!' He grinned. 'It needs to be fulfilled somehow!'
Draco laughed at that. 'So true.'
'Would you like to accompany me to Mungo's in the new year Harry? I go there every week to visit a young girl who doesn't have a family to visit her.'
Draco's head snapped up at that. 'Since when Mum?'
'Since your Father was in Azkaban, dear.'
'Oh.'
'Her family was killed by Death Eaters and I feel a lot of sympathy towards her, plus she's a lovely little girl with so much potential. She reminds me of you, Draco.'
'Aww, is she a beautiful little thing with blonde hair and silver eyes?' Harry coo'ed.
'She is, well her hair is slightly darker and her eyes a tad bluer. But Draco is one of a kind.'
'Agreed. His hair still blinds me.'
Draco swatted Harry's arm in mock indignation and they resumed eating their breakfast, talking about Draco's potions and Harry's possible future career.
Christmas was busy this year. Harry and Draco spent the morning together with Narcissa, before heading to the Weasley's for lunch with Luna and her Father, and then ending up at Zabini mansion having a party with a select few friends. Narcissa and Draco visited Lucius on boxing day (he was away on important business, trying to save his sullied name) leaving Harry to nurse his hangover with Luna, Blaise, Seamus, Dean, Neville, the Twins and some other loud and boisterous teenagers.
They were rude and inconsiderate and Harry was going to shout at them. That's if he could actually be bothered to open his eyes and get off the sofa. Luna and Blaise both tried offering him hangover cure but Harry didn't even have the energy to tip his head backward, so he shook his head and suffered in silence.
'C'mon Harry.' Blaise mummered. Harry just ignored him.
'Stop being such a damn lightweight Potter! You can normally handle twice of what you had last night.'
'Shup. Lemme sleep.' He grunted into the pillow.
'Tip your head back, I'll force it down your throat.'
'What did they make me drink?' He said miserably, after he had recovered from the choking fit that Blaise had inflicted on him.
'Some muggle mix, a rancid concoction.' Blaise replied with a chuckle. 'You were pretty drunk by that point, so you was drinking anything and everything.'
'Yum.'
'Hey Seamus, what did you make the poor bloke drink?'
Seamus looked up and grinned widely. 'Harry mate, you were pretty funny last night ya know. Erm, Vodka and coke, Cider, Jack Daniels, some sort of Irish Cream, Wine, Larger and...'
'Eurgh!' Harry spluttered.
'Oh yeah! Sherry. Was me Mam's. Vile stuff. It was a circle of death, or a ring of fire. It's a simple muggle game that gets you pissed quick.'
'Yeah, your telling me.'
'Draco was in a right stress this morning, he was agitated because he was going to see Lucius, but he was worrying over your condition, plus he was angry at me for letting you drink so much.'
'Sounds like Draco.' Harry said, he felt much better now that Blaise helped him with the potion.
'Possessive much?' Dean piped up from the other sofa.
'He is, but it's because he doesn't want Harry to suffer ever again, and if he's got to wrap him in bubble wrap he will.'
'Alright Luna babe, too deep for this time in the morning.' Harry laughed.
'What's bubble wrap?' Blaise asked, confusion written clearly in his face.
'It's like plastic bubble paper, it's used to stop things from breaking when it's wrapped up. Muggle thing.'
'Ah.' Blaise replied. Interesting, he thought. He could never understand how people could live without magic, but apparently bubble wrap really helped.
They declined into an uncomfortable silence, and Harry reverted to biting his nails.
'So Harry, Blaise. Fancy coming for a walk?' Luna suggested.
'Sounds good.' Harry said.
Seamus wolf-whistled and Harry and Blaise glared at him. 'Two men at once, oh Luna I didn't realize you had it in you.' He winked and leered at the blonde girl.
'Luna may be beautiful, but she's really not my type.' Harry smirked.
'But she would be if you were straight.'
Harry thought about it. Yeah, I suppose she would be, he thought. He obviously liked blondes, blondes with silvery eyes.
'Of course she would be! She's a total babe!' Harry said with a smile.
Luna smiled gently and Blaise laughed.
'It's only cuz she looks like Draco, but the female version.'
'Nah, Draco's the female version of Draco.' Seamus snickered.
Harry guffawed and Blaise done his best to hide how funny he thought that comment was.
Luna shook her head. 'We do look somewhat alike, I suppose. I'd be lucky to be with a man like Harry. And Blaise, of course.' She said to placate her boyfriend.
Both men nodded in satisfaction. Harry's nod was a bit more jovial.
The Irishman was still laughing over his previous comment to pay anymore attention to what the others were saying.
All, in all. It was a good afternoon. Harry, Luna and Blaise went for a 'walk' and waited for Draco to come home.
Draco came back in the early evening and he looked happy, as well as sleepy and a little bit anxious.
'How's he doing?' Harry asked, swooping Draco into his arms.
'He's okay. Everything seems to be going well. Italy was never going to be a problem, as he's associated with the Zabini's and they are one of the most prominent family's in Italy.'
'Fantastic.' Harry beamed. He waved a hasty goodbye to his friends and dragged Draco through the floo.
He had just managed to undress Draco when Narcissa's voice sounded outside the door.
'Boys, dinners going to be ready in ten minutes, dress well.'
Harry swore under his breath. He rutted his hips against Draco's, causing the blonde to moan wantonly.
'We'll have to finish this later.' He said seductively.
'Nnn no. Harry. Now.'
'Not now gorgeous, your
Mother will walk in, you know it.'
'Don't care.' Draco pouted.
'So you wouldn't mind if you're elegant, pureblood Mother walked in on her gay son having his ass pounded by a Half-blood Gryffindor?'
Draco seemed to be actually thinking about it.
'Okay. Later. You owe me.'
'Gladly.'
Harry was nervous. Draco was at home, and Narcissa was accompanying Harry to St. Mungo's to enquire about a training course.
'Mrs. Malfoy, the usual? Ah, who's this?'
'Harry is interested in becoming a Healer, he was wondering if you could help.'
'Of course.' She said kindly. 'Come through this way, Harry. Can I take a full name?'
'Um, Harry Potter Miss.'
'Harry Potter? My goodness, it's an honor Mr Potter, come right this way, I'm sure we can find something exactly to your liking. Will Mrs. Malfoy be coming with you?'
'No, no. This is Harry's thing, I'm going to go and see Joslyn.'
'Of course, you know where she is.'
Narcissa patted Harry on the shoulder and gave him an encouraging smile, before she took her leave and left the room.
'So Mr Potter, why are you interested in becoming a Healer, rumour had it that you wanted to be an Auror?'
'Rumours aren't always true, but yes, I was thinking about it in my 4th, 5th and 6th years, but I soon got tired of constantly being in danger and chasing the baddies. I want to help people and I think that this is the best way to go about it.'
'Well I think you've made an excellent choice.' She beamed. 'We take great care of our staff and patients, and you're in luck as a training programme begins at the end of february.'
She showed Harry around the whole hospital, including the Thickery ward, where the long time patients lived. He saw the training rooms, the staff rooms, the lounges and even the large and very beautiful gardens.
'How have you liked it so far Harry?'
'Yeah, it's lovely. So what does the actual training entail?'
'Mondays to Thursdays, 9-5, in week one. Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays 12pm-12am, in week two and Mondays to Friday 10-6, in week three.'
'Oh right, that's no where as bad as I thought it was going to be.'
'We offer full-time and part-time courses so everyone has a chance to learn, and if you pass we offer full and part time positions.'
'Oh that's good.'
Harry was in the hospital all afternoon, he passed the interview (even though he knew he would, whether it was skill or his name that done it) and he was given a welcome pack that he had to take home and read and fill out for when he started on the last day of february.
When he got home he was greeted by his very other-enthusiastic boyfriend,
'How'd it go? Did ya get in? You did! You didn't? Shit, you did!'
'Draco calm down!' Harry laughed. 'I got in and I start on the last day in February.'
All Harry saw was a blur of golden white as the Slytherin launched himself into Harry's arms.
'I knew it. I bloody well knew it.'
'Need I ask how it went?' Narcissa asked as she walked into the room where to two young men were.
'Judging by your Son's reaction. You don't even have to guess.'
'Oh Harry, I'm so pleased for you. You're going to be fantastic.'
'Thanks.' He replied warmly as he wrapped his arm around his blonde. 'Well, I best firecall Luna and Blaise. They'll chop my head off if I don't tell them first.'
AN: This chapter doesn't feel long, but it's longer than I thought. Hope you enjoy it. The next chapter is going to the last one! :(
