Chapter Twenty Seven ~ What About Us ~ Maddy's POV:
"Tell me a story of how the Sun loved the Moon so much. She died every night, just to let him breathe..."
I read it with pure confidence, yet I'd never read the text before. I knew part of the story of course, but my mam never read it in as much detail as the book. I was awestruck. The meaning of the story was so deep and I felt I could relate to it. I could feel eyes on me. I turned my head slightly, Rhydian was sitting at the table diagonally across from me and he was the source.
Rhydian was staring at me? Okay, this is weird. I know we got out and all but... he doesn't have to stare at me!
Self-consciously, I turned back around and Miss thanked me for my reading.
The rest of the lesson went as a blur for me, we had to study the text and take out all of the ambitious vocabulary, sentence structure, punctuation, effect use of adjectives and all that mushy English stuff that I never paid attention to anyway. I hated the subject, I'd much rather sit in a room with a huge fireplace with a blazing fire! Okay, that might've been a big far... I think I'd rather do an English lesson actually...
I was snapped from my thoughts when I heard the bell ring through my ears, shattering the layer of concentration within the thoughts of how stupid I thought this lesson was. The only thing I was remotely interested in, was in fact the actual story. I couldn't pull my mind from it. There was something about it that made my heart twinge with anxiety...
I picked up my bags and threw them over my shoulder, next lesson was P.E and that would go fairly quickly because I had cross-country and I was good at that. I enjoyed it, purely because I had the chance to be alone with my thoughts. Well, actually, thinking about it; it was full-moon this weekend. Saturday to be precise and then... Holy Shit.
Holy Shit.
How could I forget such a thing?
It was bloody Christmas! In 8 days!
That was it. My mind was gone, all concentration levels extinguished with a mere thought. Much to my own disgust, we weren't allowed the Friday off this year. All because some stupid idiot in the year above didn't pass their maths exam. God, I bet he felt like a failure. I would if I stopped the whole school having the last day off for Christmas.
Actually, now I'm starting to feel bad for the guy...
But anyway.
I was now in the changing rooms. How I got here? I have no idea, my legs must've just walked their way here automatically. I wonder if I ignored anyone who tried to talk to me on the way? I hope not or there'd be some explaining to do.
That's when I smelt it.
It was only a quick whiff, maybe it was just passing through? I only smelt it for a second or two so it was probably nothing...
I carried on changing and made my way out the door onto the field with Shannon and all the other girls in my class. I could see a sea of teenage boys jumping around like chimpanzees as they made their way onto the top astro also known as the football pitch.
But the smell got stronger the further I went out onto the pitch. I could hear Shannon calling my name as she ran towards me, but my brain was in wolf mode. I could smell... Something... A...
Shit.
Double Shit.
"Maddy! What ya doing? Been trying to talk to ya all day? What's got into yer?", Shannon came bounding towards me and she slapped a hand onto my shoulder and spun me around.
"Maddy! Your eyes are yellow!", she hissed as quiet as possible.
I couldn't control it, I darted my eyes around everywhere, scanning the edge of the woods frantically. That smell...
"Shan...", the name slipped of my lips, like a cry for help even though it was almost barely audible.
I could sense panic rising inside her. "Control it! What's wrong?"
"I need Rhydian! Now!".
Shannon's breathing increased and her fingers locked into mine, trying to calm me down and hopefully, hide the black inky veins that were now spiralling out of control across my skin as my blood boiled and begun to thicken.
"Maddy! Tell me what's wrong?", She said sternly trying to keep a cool head. But it wouldn't work. It couldn't...
The smell thickened, it was filling my senses to the brim and I couldn't stand it anymore. I pulled my hands away from Shannon's forcefully and I sprinted towards the hole in the metal fencing. I ran through it as fast as my Wolf powers could handle. I didn't care whether someone saw me or not.
I ran. Following the stench that poured through my nostrils, I soared over logs and branches and bushes that stood in my pathway. My feet moved gracefully and silently, exactly like the way a wolf hunts it's prey. Exactly the same...
The trees and bushes blurred together, the sky included. All my focus was pin-pointed on the scent, following the bright yellow trail that was glittered across the woodland flooring.
I knew my eyes were golden with fear, anger, anxiety and even curiosity. My panting was heavy but silent. My once creamy pale skin was now cracked with darkening, jagged lines of an alien blood.
My pace quickened but only for a few seconds when another scent bonded with my nose. I turned my head to the side to see bright golden eyes staring back at me, I could read the same emotions that embedded my own... The Wolfblood's hands were almost identical to the ones I possessed... His sandy, blonde hair was ruffled and wind-swept as he cut through the air at a high speed un capable of a fully-bred human.
We came to a halt by the river where we first met. "Rhydian..." I breathed, clutching my side.
"Maddy... you go that way, I'll go the other. We'll get their faster!"
I frowned, "Why?". I said it flatly.
Rhydian raised his eyebrows and pushed me, "Just do it!"
I guess I had no choice. I ran in the opposite direction to him but kept my focus on him and the other scent. I was close... So close. It was only a matter of minutes before I came into a clearly, I caught the sight of the culprit!
I growled, black ink spreading from my hands, up my arms and creeping up my neck onto my face.
The figure spun around fiercely. Yellow eyes screaming fear and dominance. I snarled again and they mirrored me. We began to circle around each other, eyes locked on our opponent. I took in the Wolfblood's appearance.
Shaggy clothes, wet dog smell, dirty, muddy, ripped, checkered shirt. Slightly bigger body than my own but 'twas the same age. Give or take. She was a girl and her hair... Her eye was a deep, fiery crimson to match her im-mistakable personality.
"This is ma territory!", I growled deeply at the girl.
She took a step closer, back arched. "I don't care! I've come to take back what's rightfully mine!"
I sneered, "Get. Off. My Territory."
I closed in on her, we were only a metre apart when she growled back at me. "Not. Until. I get. What's. Mine." Her voice, mocking my own.
"What is it?", I tried another tack-tick and tried to make myself look scarier and larger.
She laughed with malevolence, "Goes by the name Morris"
I stopped. All my concentration vanished. And that's the last thing you want to do in a Wolfblood stand off.
She leapt on me, her body weight crushed me onto the ground as her snarling was louder and I could feel her disgustingly rotten breath filling my nose as she spat on me. I struggled under her weight but it did be no justice until I noticed another Wolfblood figure that I longed to see, appear through the buses and gasp in horror. I tried to croak out his name but it was no use. Rhydian's name was cancelled out under the growling of the Wolfblood on top of me and my quiet struggles that escaped my lips.
"Jana! Stop!"
Wow... CLIFFHANGER!
Okaay so this is it for now. Hope you like my idea so far?
