Chapter 28: You'll Wanna See This
"But that wasn't the plan. He's not following the plan."
"Welcome to my world."
-Kahler-Jex & Amy Pond
Amy sat in a chair, her head in her hands, as she watched Rory across the room. He was unconscious, his head propped up under his own balled up jacket. His blacked hand was wrapped up in bandages that Jake had made from the ripped up remains of Rory's shirt.
It had been the stun gun. Apparently when Rory had stabbed his hand into the controls he'd touched the metal Cyberman, and had been electrocuted.
And it was her fault. She had insisted they come here. Mickey had tried to calm her, telling her that if they hadn't shown up when they did him and Jake would probably be dead. But it hadn't done much to calm her down.
She tried to tell herself that she shouldn't be freaking out a much as she was. She barely knew him, but he still looked the same. He was so much the same that she couldn't help the sickness that crawled up inside her at sight of his lying there motionless.
"Hold on." Mickey cried, working at the computer, "I've logged into cybercontrol. A second later an image popped up. A security camera from what looked like Battersea.
"The Doctor." Amy breathed out, glad to see the man alive and well.
"They're alive." Mickey beamed, "The Doctor and Rose, there they are!"
"Never mind them." Jake pointed at the screen, looking disturbed, 'What the hell is that thing?"
Amy squinted her eyes. It was some sort of Cybermen, but it was different from the others. Larger and sitting on a throne of sorts.
"Shh." Mickey waved him down, "Has this thing got sound?"
He pressed a few buttons and gave a cheer when the audio started to come through.
"I will bring peace to the world. Everlasting peace - and unit- and uniformity"
"Is that...Lumic?" Jake whispered. Mickey and Amy shrugged having never heard the man. Amy guessed it was, his own Cybermen turned against him.
"And imagination? What about that? The one thing that lead you here. Imagination - you're killing it dead!"
"What is your name?"
"I'm the Doctor."
"A redundant title. Doctor's need not exist. Cybermen never sicken."
Amy turned back to Rory at that, then immediately ran over, seeing him shift slightly. Jake and Mickey sent her a look, but then turned back to listening to the Doctor. Amy half listened to the Doctor speech as she crouched beside Rory.
"Don't move." Amy whispered.
Rory blinked at her, "Oh, I messed up didn't I?"
"No." Amy shook her head, "Not at all."
"Wasn't your fault." Rory grumbled, "What was I thinking, trying to stun the Cyberman?"
"Well it worked." Amy whispered. "It was stupid, but it worked."
He laughed, trying it sit up, before wincing and collapsing back down, "Ouch." He grumbled.
"You were electrocuted pretty badly." Amy whispered, "You're not going anywhere, any time soon."
"Binary 9."
Amy jumped and turned to look at Mickey who was staring at the screen with a determined concentration, before he started to type rapidly on the keys in front of him.
Amy gave Rory's hand a tight squeeze before she got up and wandered over to him.
"What're you doing there, wonderbread?" She asked, looking at the code on the screen with confusion.
"An idiot could find that code." The Doctor rambled on screen, "The cancellation code. And he'd keep on typing. Keep on fighting." He looked directly the camera, "Anything to save his friends."
"How the hell did he know we were watching?" Amy whispered, looking over to Mickey who was working.
"How does the Doctor know anything." Mickey grumbled, working quickly.
"What's he doing?" Jake asked.
"Your words are irrelevant"
"Talk too much, that's my problem. Lucky I got you for that cheap tariff, Rose. For all out long chats. On your Phone."
"Phone." Mickey repeated.
Amy understood and quickly dug out her cell phone, opening up a text message to Rose "Read it to me."
"You will be deleted."
"Yes, delete, control, hash, all those lovely buttons."
"Um..." He waited a few seconds then grinned, "6-8-7-9-7-6-0."
"Then of course, my particular favorite...send."
Amy typed it in quickly, double checking, and then hit the send button. They all huddled around the computer screen, waiting eagerly.
"And let's not forget how you seduced all those ordinary people in the first place."
There was a beep in the room and Rose dug out her phone, grinning at it.
"My making every bit of technology compatible with everything else..."
"It's for you."
Rose chucked her phone through the air and the Doctor caught it, wandering up to a control port, "Like this."
And with that he slammed the phone onto the port.
The entire room exploded with chaos. The Cybermen all clutched their heads in pain, let out sigh pitch whines and groans as their emotions hit them all at once, and the reality of what had happened to them came forward.
"They're dying." Rory said from behind them. They turned to see him half hanging on a chair as he looked at the laptop they'd brought. The red dots were quickly flickering out and dying.
Amy looked back at the screen and caught site of one of the Cybermen crying as it looked at itself in its reflection. Her heart broke a little bit. It was hard to remember that these machines had once been people.
"I'm sorry." The Doctor whispered on camera.
Amy ran over to Rory and helped him into the chair, "You should be lying down."
Jake ran over to the wheel and started to turn it rapidly, Amy grabbed the chair before she could topple over.
"What're you doing?" Mickey asked.
Jake barely spared him a glance, "We've gotta get away. If that factory blows up, this balloon's gonna ignite."
"Take it back!" Mickey ordered, angrily.
"Mickey, they've had it."
Amy stomped over, grabbing the wheel and stopping it from turning. She narrowed her eyes at the man, "We're not leaving them!"
"If we stay we'll be vaporized!" Jake argued, trying to take the wheel back.
Mickey struggled on the other side to take the wheel away from Jake. Amy stopped him from turning it any further leaving the Zeppelin in a sort of stand still.
"You know what." Amy clenched her jaw, "I've had a really rough day, like a really rough day. I died. So back off or I will knock you out."
"She'll do it." Mickey nodded, quickly in agreement, "She's crazy."
Amy rolled her eyes and sent him an exasperated look over Jake's shoulder.
With one finally look, Jake let go of the wheel and Mickey took his place, turning the wheel back, and moving the Zeppelin into place.
Amy quickly took her phone out and dialed, pressing it to her ear, "Pick up, pick up pick up." And a few seconds Rose's voice came through, "Rose! It's Amy."
"Amy?" Rose's voice came through.
Amy opened her mouth to answer, but was interrupted by the Doctor snatching the phone away from the Doctor, "Amy where are you?"
"The Zeppelin."
"The Ze- Why are you there?!"
Amy rolled her eyes, "Never mind that! Go to the roof."
Before he could respond she tossed the phone to Mickey who quickly pressed it to his ear, continuing the conversation.
Jake tried to grab the wheel, "You can't go any lower-"
"I've got to!"
"You're gonna crush them!"
Mickey paused, seeing the logic in this. They couldn't just land a Zeppelin on top of them.
"There's got to be something. There's got to be." Mickey grumbled to himself, looking over the controls, "Oh yes!"
He slammed a lever.
Behind them a hatch opened up causing the entire room to fill with wind as a ladder let out and fell to the roof. It appeared to be some sort of safety hatch, a primitive one at that.
"Doctor!" Amy called down into the space, her face whipped around her.
"You've got to be kidding." The Doctor grumbled, looking at the ladder, then over at Rose. Amy noticed Mrs. Moore wasn't with them. She tried not to think about what had happened to her. "Rose, get up!"
Amy watched until all three of them were on the ladder and up a bit before turning to Mickey, "Go!"
He pushed a lever, grinning, "Hold on tight, we're going up!" He exchanged a look with Jake, "Welcome to Mickey's Airlines. Please enjoy your flight. Woooo!"
Amy could hear them cheering from the roof and let out a breath of relief. They did it. They'd actually done it!
A jerking of the ladder brought her attention back down to the others. She gasped as she saw a Cyberman at the bottom of the ladder.
"Pete!" The Doctor called, holding out his Sonic, "Take this!" Reaching out, Pete grabbed the sonic out of the Doctors hand. "Use it! Hold the button down! Press it against the rope - just do it!"
Pete yelled something that Amy couldn't make it out, then pressed the sonic to the ropes. Amy watched as one snapped, and then the other, and the Cyberman plunged to its death with an eerily terrified scream that she'd never heard come from a Cyberman before.
They had done it.
"This is one of the stupidest things you've ever done."
Amy rolled her eyes, putting her hands into Mrs. Moore's jacket that Rory had said she could keep. Not that Mrs. Moore would need it anymore. She felt a bit weird about wearing the dead woman's jacket, but it was nice.
She'd been sitting here for the better part of half an hour listening to the Doctor berate her as they waited for the power cell to finish its charge up. Getting back from the Zeppelin they'd all piled into HQ and promptly fallen asleep. In the morning they'd given them a ride back to where they'd parked the TARDIS, the power cell almost ready to cart them back home.
"Actually." Amy interrupted, a bit peeved, "I think the stupidest thing I've ever done was getting into that TARDIS when I was twenty-one."
The Doctor's stern expression faulted as he chuckled, knowing that she was joking. But then it was back again, "You know that I don't have anymore right? This trip might kill you"
"Yeah well..." She swallowed, not willing to admit how nervous she really was about that, "We'll cross that road when we come to it."
The Doctor paused, staring at her weirdly, "We're at it now."
Amy gave him a half shrug and put her hands into her pocket. She's woken up feeling like she had a bad hangover, and the Doctor had dragged her into the Zero room and given her a check up.
The Doctor gave her one last look and stepped out of the TARDIS, "Rose?"
Amy followed him over to where Rose was standing, looking a bit put out.
"I've only got five minutes of power..." The Doctor explained, "...We gotta go."
Amy spotted Rory to the side, and gave a look at the Doctor. He nodded at her and she ran over. She had to make this quick.
"They there." He grinned at her when she reached him.
"Hey." She nodded, "How's your hand?"
"Well..." He raised it to show that it was wrapped with bandages, "Gross to look at, but hopefully they'll be able to save it. Not much of a Doctor if I don't have my hand, right?"
Amy soaked up his image, knowing that after this she might not see him for a while after this. "What're you gonna do now?"
"Help." He said softly, "Get rid of the Cybermen, save the world."
"The usual, then?"
He chuckled, looking around, and lowering his voice, "And I think I'm gonna start the search up again. Look for her. My Amy."
Amy grinned at him widely, "Well, good luck."
He leaned down and pressed a quick kiss just to the side of her mouth, pulling back slowly. "I don't regret it you know...anything."
Amy smiled at him, "Me neither."
"Amy!" The Doctor called, holding his pinstriped suit over one arm.
Amy nodded and turned back to Rory, "Goodbye."
"Yeah...bye..."
Amy turned away, but before she could get very far she felt a tug on her arm. Yelping slightly she let Rory pulled her and twist her back towards him. A split second later he had gripped the back of her head and was pressing his lips down on her.
It wasn't a sweet kiss, or even the passion filled kisses they had shared the day before. It was a kiss fill with longing for the days that could never come.
A goodbye kiss.
It must've only lasted for a few seconds, but then she was back to her sense, and staring at him slightly out of breath.
"Oh, yeah." She swallowed, stepping back with a small grin, "That's why I married you."
And then she walked back over to the Doctor, not looking back.
The Doctor was looking at her with raised eyebrow, obviously having a front row seat to the show. He winked at her, then turned back to Jake, "Now then, Jake - we've gotta run. But one more thing; Mrs. Moore. Her real name is Angela Price. She's got a husband out there. And children. Find them. Tell them how she died saving the world."
"Yeah." Jake nodded, "Course I will."
The Doctor nodded, "Off we go, then!"
"Uh..." Mickey paused, looking at them nervously, "Thing is, I'm staying."
Amy stared at him, wondering if she'd heard him right, "What?"
"You're doing what?" The Doctor said at the same time, blinking at him.
Rose, who had already been looking upset, started to tear up, "You can't."
Mickey's took in a shuddering breath as he looked at Rose, "It sort of balances out, 'cos this world lost its Ricky. But there's me. And there's work to be done with all those Cybermen still out there."
"But..." Rose's voice cracked, "You can't stay."
"Rose, my gran's here. She's still alive. My old gran - remember her?"
Rose sniffed, holding back her tears. Her lip trembles as she answered, "Yeah."
"She needs me."
'What about me?' Rose asked, 'What if I need you?"
Mickey gave her a soft smile, "Yeah, but Rose...you don't. It's just you and him, isn't it?" He looked back at Amy and the Doctor, fondness in his eyes instead of the bitterness, "You and him, and the mad ginger."
Amy rolled her eyes, muttering, "Why does everyone call me that?"
Mickey laughed, but it sounded pained. He looked at Rose sadly, "We had something a long time ago, but...not anymore."
"Well...we'll come back! We can travel anywhere, come and see you, yeah?"
It was obvious that Rose was just grasping at straws, and the Doctor walked forward, placing a hand on her shoulder, "We can't. I told you, travel between parallel worlds is impossible. We - we fell through a crack in time. When we leave...I've got to close it. We can't ever return."
He looks at Mickey, his eyes asking him if this is really want he wanted.
Mickey held his hand out, "Doctor." He shook his hand.
The Doctor smiled, "Take Rose's phone. It's got the code. Get it out there. Stop these factories." Mickey nodded, "And good luck. Mickey the Idiot."
He slapped his cheek fondly and Mickey chuckled, "Watch it!"
The Doctor slipped into the TARDIS and Amy followed them, letting Rose and Mickey have their last moments together before they went home.
Once they were alone the Doctor sighed, looking over at Amy with furrow eyebrows.
"Now, what are we going to do with you?"
"Jake, Rory...you wanna watch this."
Rory walked over to the blue police box. He hadn't looked inside, nor had he wanted to. Amy had assured him that this was their ride, and he'd believed her.
The light on top of the box started to flash and then it hummed, coming in and out with a sight wheezing, until finally it vanished.
"What...the hell?" Jake gapped, incredulous.
Mickey watched as the box disappeared with tears in his eyes, smiling, "That's the Doctor...in the TARDIS...with Rose Tyler and Amy Williams."
Rory stared at the spot where the TARDIS had vanished with mixed emotions. On one hand is was strange to let go of the woman he'd been in love with since he was a child. But on the other hand it gave him new purpose.
He followed Jake and Mickey, getting into the back of the van while they climbed in front.
"I know it's not easy with my face looking exactly like Ricky." Mickey said, "But I'm a different man. I'm not replacing him. But we can remember him by fighting in his name."
"His and Angela's." Rory said from the back seat with a soft smile.
They both nodded in agreement.
Mickey then grinned and looked at them, "With all those Cyber factories out there...where do you think we should start?"
Rory smiled gently to himself, "Scotland."
They both looked at him in confusion, then with a soft understanding.
Jake chuckled starting the vehicle, "Scotland it is."
"And then Paris." Mickey said with a grin. They both looked at him strangely and he shrugged, "What...I've always wanted to go to Paris."
"Okay." Rory agreed, "We can go liberate Paris."
"What?" Jake said skeptically, "The three of us? In a van?"
"Who else?" Rory asked.
Mickey grinned, "Nothing wrong with a van. I once saved the universe with a big yellow truck."
Neither of them asked him to elaborate. They just grinned, starting the can and drove away.
Rory stared out the window. He would find her. She'd always said that she wanted to go to her childhood home. And no matter what he did...
He would find her.
"Are you sure about this?" The Doctor asked, laying her back on the table.
"Doctor." Amy sighed, "As you've already pointed out half a dozen times, I was stupid and used up all of the magic purple goo you gave me. This is the only option."
The Doctor pursed his lips and nodded, looking over at Rose who was shaken by the whole thing, "Are you sure about this?"
"Who else is gonna do it?" Rose said, her voice cracking slightly.
The Doctor nodded, "When we get through, I'm going to close the crack. Since it's what's making you sick hopefully this won't be necessary."
Amy lifted her shirt above her head, not at all embarrassed about being in just her bra. "Just do it."
The Doctor nodded, pulling out a few white pads and sticking them to various parts of Amy's chest. Once he was done he turned to Rose, and walked her over to another, very strange looking machine.
"Alright, Rose." He said softly, "That's her heart-rate. If it flatlines press this button here." He pointed to a green button on the side of the machine, "It activates the pads on her chest."
"I know." Rose stood beside the machine, "Just hurry up."
"And use the damn stabilizers." Amy shouted out after him, "I don't need to be flying around the room."
Rose took in several deep breaths as she waited beside her friend. "You ready?"
Amy nodded, "Do it."
Rose pressed the blue button, and watched as a clear liquid went down a tube and into the IV in Amy's hand. It only took a few seconds before her friend was completely passed out on the bed.
They had agreed it would be better this way. It would be less painful for Amy if she did go into cardiac arrest and if she were to die...well this way it would just be like falling asleep.
Rose held her breath, waiting and praying that it wouldn't happen. Maybe they would go through the crack and nobody would die and everything would be fine. She had already lost one friend today, she wasn't ready to lose another.
But as it would turn out, fate was against her.
The machine beeped loudly and then the alarms were blaring. Rose felt tears come to her eyes as she saw the flat line.
Wasting no time she pressed the green button on the side of the machine and crossed her fingers.
Amy's body arched off the table, but the horrible continuous beep continued.
"No, no, no..." Rose whispered, pressing it again.
And again, and again, and again.
"No, Amy..." Rose cried, pressing it again.
And again.
"Amy!"
A/N: HA! So Rory's alive, but is Amy? Well...yeah, she is the main character, but still. I feel like this was a long wait between updates but it really isn't...which makes me feel like I've been spoiling you guys a bit. More than a bit really.
It turns out a lot of people agree with my thoughts about Tasha, and I've come up with a new theory that I've discussed with a few people. I was thinking that Tasha might be just a pure time lord, either from a period after the Doctor finds gallifrey, or perhaps one that never got trapped in the first place. My initial thought might be that she's The Rani. Since the Rani was a renegade much like the master there's a good chance she might not have gone back to gallifrey to fight in the war. Since the Doctor and the Rani have known each other since they were young, it would explain their familiarity with each other, as well as her ability to fly the TARDIS. There's probably a bunch of plot holes in the theory, but it makes a bit more sense then the theory about River.
Gahh, seeing the stuff from S8 is making me so excited for the new season. I rant more about it when more information comes out! But until then be awesome my lovelies and review with all comments, questions, or concerns!
Until Next Time,
-Ash
