Arthur blinked in astonishment. As Andy's face had closed in on Ariadne's, he had expected her to push him away, or simply slap him. Instead, she sat there, letting him move in on her. To the other man's chagrin, he looped his arm around Ariadne's waist, and pulled her closer. Turning, he smirked at Arthur.
Arthur nearly balled his fists. Nothing would have given him greater pleasure than to have thrown a punch. However, he knew that Ariadne thought he was involved with his ex, so decided to try and stay calm, and say nothing. Andy leaned back, and stroked a finger down Ariadne's cheek.
"Thanks for that," he said, calmly. Ariadne blushed slightly, and Arthur swallowed. Thankfully, the waiter appeared, bearing dishes. As he slowly, self consciously set their plates down, Arthur busied himself with his cutlery. Andy picked up his fork, and began to scoop up pasta.
"Sorry," he mumbled, "bit hungry."
"We noticed," Arthur said, smiling sardonically.
"Excuse me?" Andy frowned.
"Well, you clearly needed to tuck in..." Arthur raised an eyebrow, watching as the other man ate. He glared at Arthur. "Meaning?"
"Nothing," Arthur shrugged, picking up his wine glass. Needling Andy was all too easy. Ariadne picked up her fork, prodding at her food. Eventually, she began to eat.
A discontented silence fell over the table. Arthur began to eat, pleased he had unsettled the other man.
"Oh, look at her!" Andy suddenly said, in hushed tones. "That is so sad."
Arthur turned his head. A young couple were sitting together. The young woman - pale, and thin - was picking at a salad. She was with a young man, who kept glancing at her, worriedly.
Andy sighed and picked up his wine glass. "I don't think I'd handle it if my girlfriend was like that."
Arthur shook his head. Suddenly, he realised he'd had enough. If Ariadne was stupid enough to fall for Andy's charm, then let her. He began to push back his chair, and pulling out his wallet, dropped 3 ten dollar bills on the table.
"Arthur?" Ariadne asked, looking puzzled.
"I have something I need to do," he said, abruptly. "Good night!"
Andy couldn't suppress a smirk as Arthur got up and left. Ariadne looked slightly stunned. Andy reached over and patted her hand. "Don't worry," he said, soothingly.
She shook her head. "I just..." her voice broke off. "Why he would behave like that?"
"Because he's jealous," Andy said, soothingly. "Simple as that."
Ariadne nodded. "Oh," she said, her voice faltering slightly. "I see."
