Blue and Hazel

An: I don't own Artemis Fowl.

Chapter Twenty-Nine

Commander Stern entered the council hall with an air of authority surrounding him. A smug grin fell easily upon his lips as he passed Holly. She noticed he didn't look her way once. She was concerned. Had her previous behavior only doomed Artemis more? No, Commander Stern was professional. He wouldn't be petty. After all, his hate for Artemis was there before Holly was ever in the picture. Unfortunately, this thought only served to worry her more.

"Ah, a little late," Mel remarked.

"Sorry," he replied. "I had to assure the hospital that CaptainShort was fine. I am sure the evidence that I provided will be enough to hold Artemis to a good portion of the crime."

The leading council member nodded. "Care to play all footage?"

Before they could proceed the sound of aggressive cloppinginterrupted them. Foaly was near, Holly thought.

"Wait, don't you dare," Foaly narrowed his eyes and then looked to Holly. "I'm so sorry, Holly. I know how much this means to you. I just couldn't be considered a traitor but I'm here now to defend Artemis alongside you."

"This is all touching," Artemis grinned evilly. "Who would have thought this hearing would be such a good time. I've received the highest of compliments from a council leader and my friends are here to defend me. What could make this better?"

"You will all come to order now," Mel hollered. "I will not be disrespected any longer. Commander, the footage, please."

Commander Stern loaded the tiny drive into a large screen usedfor hearings. A string of videos of Artemis and Opal appeared on the screen. All the footage was retrieved from Foaly's own computer. There was documented proof of Artemis's involvement. The evidence was indisputable.

"Commander, I've also been informed, that Artemis had a secondary plan?" the fairy council member asked. "Am I correct? A plan for when the preliminary one failed?"

Holly looked to Foaly for answers. Foaly narrowed his eyes at the commander's back.

"Yes," Stern stated firmly. "The centaur explained everything clearly. Destruction of the broadcasting ability was a trigger for the next plan to take hold. Apparently it involved outright exposure of our world for monetary gain."

Opal looked to Artemis. "You had a secondary agenda?"

Artemis smiled sweetly. "Please my dear, Opal. One must always be prepared. Don't you worry, I was treated well in your care despite all things. I would have given you 5%."

"5%?" she shrieked. "I don't want money. I want revenge. I want power!"

"I told you to keep it down, Koboi," Mel screamed and then instantly lowered his voice.

"It was brilliant really," Artemis chuckled as he fully explained himself. "During Griffith's stay I had him under close video surveillance. For many purposes of course. I figured I could make much more gold for the Fowl name. I would receive gold to make sure I don't post the footage. Would have been a shame really. In the end I would post either way. I would win both ways."

Holly frowned. Artemis wasn't making a compelling case for himself. He refused to realize the situation he was in. He acted as if he had another plan for escape.

Commander glared at Artemis as if he were pure filth. "Except you forgot how talented Foaly was you terrible child."

"Child?" Artemis narrowed his eyes. "I'll have you know – "

Mel pounded his fist onto the table. "The verdict is unanimous. While you bickered we discussed. It is clear the people will not rest until Artemis has been taught a lesson. It seems that not only is your memory too threatening to keep but so are other things."

Holly didn't like this at all. The look in the council's eyes told her this wasn't going to be good.

"Artemis Fowl you have been charged with the abduction of a fairy child and mud child, as well as the endangerment of the people and those above ground. Due to your repeated crimes you will be sentenced to a complete mental cleansing."

Foaly's fidgeted. Holly knew something was wrong from his behavior. There was no such thing as a full mental was the blue rinse, biological bomb for technical terms. There was no mental cleansing.

"Foaly, what is he talking about?" Holly asked urgently.

Foaly bit his lip refusing to answer.

"We will wipe his memory of the people and cut his IQ down a few notches," Commander Stern smirked proudly. "If you ask me it is quite the invention to come out of Foaly's lab."

"Foaly?" Holly frowned. "Why would you ever create such a terrible device?"

"What? I'm an inventor. I had no true intentions to use it. I had no idea they would ever use anything like that on anyone, too cruel," he assured. "In fact I made sure it was under lock and key. I didn't want it to be used. My intellect gets me so far. I couldn't imagine subjecting anyone to something so painful."

Mel rolled his eyes. "There is more. We can't lock Fowl up but I assure you we can above the ground. We simply unearth all Fowl family secrets and let him take the full blame. He will be locked away in no time. If we face any trouble then it will be solved. We already have personnel of the LEP stationed."

"You can't mesmerize the mud people to arrest Artemis. What do they know of his criminal offenses against the people?" she pointed. "You are growing wild with power Councilman Orderly. The rest of the council couldn't possibly agree."

"I fully approve," Arnold Powers remarked.

"It is confirmed and documented. Miss Gil please archive this official statement. As of 12pm, Artemis Fowl has officially been convicted and will head down to the Argon clinic to experience the mind wipe and the Intellect Adjust Machine."

Foaly clopped one hoof angrily in protest.

"My machine hasn't been tested," Foaly reminded. "I've only used mathematical equations to come out with the probability of it working. All I have is the percent."

"And what percent?" Mel asked with a raised brow.

"99," Foaly sighed.

"And we all know you Foaly, you don't fail. Am I right? Or do we find someone else from this day forward?"

Foaly looked to Artemis and then ahead. "No, my machine will work despite the lack of testing. Truthfully, there was no formal testing but accidental testing may have transpired with a technician of mine. He has no hard feelings but it is a touchy subject."

"Then it is settled," he beamed. "Artemis Fowl prepare for the consequences. I feel as a repeat offender, Artemis deserves this."

"This is unfair," Holly remarked. "What about Koboi?"

"She will be subjected to the machine as well," Mel promised.

"What?" Opal bellowed. "I have rights as a citizen of Haven. You can't do a thing to me."

In the chaos of the hearing a single voice whispered repetitively. Holly noticed Bell sitting to the right of Opal. She shook her head from side to side.

"No, you can't. It isn't completely Artemis's fault."

Opal glared at Bell. "Quiet, you ignorant menace."

Bell stomped her foot and all look to her. "No, it isn't his fault. Artemis Fowl was put under a Mesmer by Opal. He didn't know what he was doing."

Silence fell upon the crowd. Holly walked toward Artemis. Was there hop? She knelt before the male who was still as calm as always. Her eyes widened as she swept her eyes across his face.

"What is it Holly?" Foaly asked.

She looked around the room before announcing her finding. "His pupils aren't healthy looking. They belong to someone who has been under a Mesmer for too long. Opal you deranged witch!"

Artemis smiled. "Holly, you look too stressed for nothing. I assure you I'm just fine."

Holly ignored him. She knew he was only trying to bring herunnecessary pain. After arguing amongst the council they reluctantly agreed to further examination from a member of the Haven Hospital.

Although, it was forbidden to Mesmer other fairies it was still done by the lawless. Professional examiners were needed in court proceedings due to the possibility of crimes committed under Mesmer.

Ten minutes after the announcement a middle aged Haven Hospital employee entered through the double doors. His eyes widened at the different members of the council looking at him. He noticed the criminals in the corner and was shocked.

In all his years of practice he hadn't seen such high level criminals before. He ran his nervous fingers through sandy brown hair. He took a deep breath before reeling in all his emotions. Holly noticed the change easily.

The male shined a light in Artemis's eyes and then stepped away. He flipped the end of his lab coat dramatically before giving the council their answer.

"He has been under a Mesmer."

Holly sighed relieved.

"But, from the look of how strained the pupils are, the Mesmer couldn't have lasted longer than a couple of months. I'm truly impressed. Most would have experienced some terrible repercussions" he shared. "Anyway, he isn't under a Mesmer now. My examination only confirms it."

Holly shook her head. "I don't understand."

The professional smiled and then repeated slowly. "Artemis Fowl was under a Mesmer for a long time. Actually, it was a dangerous amount of time but he isn't right now. I may not be on the council or in possession of the full story but everything after the Mesmer was all him. With further research I can say how long of a Mesmer he was under but it isn't necessary."

Mel grinned. "That is all we need, Thank you Arthur."

Arthur nodded. "Of course. As lead doctor it is my job."

"Wait," Holly grabbed the male's lab sleeve. "Isn't it true that brain damage can come from a Mesmer if you resist? I know Artemis he wouldn't give in. He resisted."

Arthur pondered this. "You are right. It would be something to investigate. Now that you mention it, serious cases of theMesmer have been rumored to leave those victims in horrible shape. I will give it some extra thought. I just need approval of the council for further examination."

Holly looked to Mel. She reached out and grabbed Artemis's shoulder. The male gave her a strange look but she ignored this. He may not understand how serious this was but she did. Mel could denounce ever knowing the obvious medical information. Artemis could lose everything in an instant. Only a few defenders of Artemis occupied the hall. Was Artemis going to catch a break? Holly hoped so.

Hey Wonderfuls! Hopefully this chapter makes up for the long wait. A lot happened in this chapter. Does Artemis have brain damage? Why should it matter for the case? Thanks for all the positive feedback. All the feedback brings a smile to my face.

I would like to give special thanks to reviewers:

starlightGilgalad, thanks for the review. Oh no indeed. Arty scared? He did show that emotion briefly but you'll have to tune in to see what happens next. I'm glad you like the last chapter. Thanks for the support.

Mythologirly, thanks for the review. Will Artemis be good again? You'll have to stay tuned to see. I'll try to update soon. Thanks for the support.

PierceTheVeils, thanks for the review. I love cliff hangers too. You worry about Holly? Hm, is it how she is acting? Could liesbe told in court? Hm. Possibly maybe. I'm sorry for the average level of action in the story. I was so excited with the interactions that I focused on putting action at specific points. For example holly's mission in the beginning and Holly's fight with Lunar. I remember the series had a lot of action and I enjoyed it immensely but I guess for this story I felt a lot of action wasn't necessary. I'm glad despite the action that you still enjoyed the story. Thanks also for pointing it out to me. Also thanks for leaving in-depth reviews. In another story I could have a better balance of action and emotion/interaction. I'm glad you enjoy the story. Thanks again for the support.

CybeastFalzar, thanks for the review. Phoenix Wright? Ha, I get it but not completely so for Holly. More like moral for the support.

Guest, thanks for the review. Artemis and Opal sent to the same prison? Hm. It is an interesting idea. I'm glad you like the story. Thanks for the support.

SecretSuccubs, thanks for the review. I threw you off didn't I? I hope it was in a good not bad way. I guess it was my intention to be an unpredictable story. Hopefully the chapter above gave some ideas on how the story may resolve. Thanks for the support.

Hey everyone thanks so much for reading, the reviews, the follows, and the favorites. I feel so honored to have so much feedback. This story is winding down.
