Chapter 29
Derek Morgan looked at his watch again and sighed. They had been in the small jewellery store for almost an hour and he was sure that by now they had seen every single engagement ring they had to offer. He had bought his fare share of jewellery in his life, for girlfriends, his sisters, his mother. But he had had no idea there were so many choices when it came to engagement rings. Princess, Marquise, Cushion, Pear. How may ways exactly were there to cut a diamond? And that was only the shapes, they came in different sizes too. And why did it seem impossible for Reid to choose one of them? As far as he was concerned they were all beautiful. But his friend insisted none of them were what he was looking for.
"No sorry, not this one either." Reid's voice interrupted his thoughts and he turned his head to look at at him. "I'm sorry Morgan, I know this is boring you."
Derek shook his head and smirked. "It's not. But I don't get what you don't like about the ring." he replied, gesturing towards the piece in front of them.
Spencer nervously licked his lips. "I don't know... It's a beautiful ring but somehow it doesn't feel like it's the right one for Annie."
Morgan chuckled loudly. "That has to be the most unusual thing for you to say. Dr. Spencer Reid, scientist and genius, wrecking his brain because the ring doesn't feel right."
Spencer shot his friend an annoyed look. He knew he was acting completely irrational but he didn't just want to buy any ring, it had to be perfect.
"I'm just teasing you. I get it, I get it. Want to check out another store? You'll find the right one, I..." Derek started but was cut off by the sound of his phone ringing.
"Hey Babygirl, what's up?"
Spencer watched as Morgan listened, nodding his head every few seconds. Since it was Garcia on the phone, he could only guess it was another case. Another case where he would stay behind, helping them however he could from the distance, but feeling useless nonetheless. Whenever they flew off to whatever city was currently plagued by a serial killer or kidnapper, he would feel left out. And it wasn't their fault, they updated him and assigned him any work that would not require his presence on the crime scenes. He once again cursed his legs for not doing what he wanted them to do.
"Okay, we'll be there in 10." Morgan said before he tapped the screen of his phone to hang up.
Spencer's face turned into a curious frown when Morgan turned to face him, a smirk on his face.
"You can just drop me off at the office and I'll have Annie pick me up later. And we'll deal with this ring business when you get back." he said, awkwardly straightening his vest.
Morgan shook his head, still smirking. "No pretty boy. As it seems this one requires your speedy reading abilities, I'll tell you the details in the car. So if you're up for it and if Hotch manages to get your doctor to clear you for travel, you're with us this time."
Annie felt her heartbeat slowly return to normal as Sarah enveloped her in a hug, following the screech she lad let out when she had shown her the display.
Pregnant. She really was pregnant. She pulled away from her friend's embrace and her free hand once again flew to her abdomen. Pregnant. A tiny little human being was growing inside of her and in roughly 9 months she would have a baby! It was a bit weird if you thought about it but it just felt so right.
"We're gonna have a baby." It felt even more weird if you said it out loud. "We're gonna have a baby." she repeated as she looked up at Sara's beaming face.
"My best friend is gonna have a baby!" her friend squealed, hugging her once more. "Oh my god sweetie. Congratulations!"
Annie took another deep breath. "Thanks."
"So when are you gonna tell Spence? Tonight? How are you gonna tell him? Oh we could think of something cute, like buy a onesie or..."
"Sarah!" Annie cut her off. "Will you please slow down for a minute?" she laughed.
"Sorry, I just... this is so exciting." Sarah smiled.
"I know." Annie beamed. "And yes, I will tell him tonight. As soon as he gets home." she said, standing up and walking out of the bathroom.
"Although I don't know how to keep this to myself till then." she added as her eyes shot up to the clock on the wall.
"Well I could drive you to the Bureau if you want."
Annie shook her head. "No, I'll wait till he gets home. If I go to the office and pull him away from the others they'll know something is up. And before we know it we'll have Penelope grilling us... And I don't want everyone to know just yet, it's still so early. I can't be more than 7 or 8 weeks pregnant, so much can go wrong so I guess I should wait until I'm at least 12 weeks and..."
Now it was Sarah's turn to cut her off. "Nothing's gonna go wrong sweetie. You two are gonna have a perfect little baby. But I do understand you might want to keep this to yourself for a couple of weeks longer." she smiled. "Which is why I promise I will not break, however Penelope Garcia might torture me."
"You say that now." Annie chuckled. "But thank you."
Annie glanced at the clock again, sighing when she saw barely 5 minutes had passed. All she wanted was for Spence to get home.
"So until your man is here I'll keep you company. I know you'll go nuts if you're alone now." Sarah smiled.
Annie opened her mouth, ready to protest but stopped. Sarah was right. Her eyes darted to the clock again, willing it to go faster. Her lips curled into another smile. She couldn't wait for Spence to get home...
As Morgan drove back the short way to the Bureau, Spencer had a hard time hiding his excitement. Hotch was still waiting for confirmation from his doctor that he would be clear to travel but he didn't think there would be any problems. By now he was able to do most things with little or no assistance. And since Morgan and him always shared a room he couldn't think of a valid argument against his joining the team.
The only thing bugging him was the fact that his search for the perfect engagement ring had been cut short. But he vowed to himself he'd buy one as soon as he was back. He didn't want to waste another day, he needed to know if she wanted to be his wife.
"Excited to go on the road again?" Morgan asked as he glanced over and saw the smile on his friend's face.
"I am." Spencer nodded. "It's been weird not being out there with you guys."
"Now remember, Hotch said you're only gonna support us from the local police station and maybe look at crime scenes. I know it sucks but we can't have you out there when we pursue the unsub, it's too risky. Annie would never forgive us. And we couldn't forgive ourselves if anything happened to you."
"I know Morgan. I'm not going to chase a serial killer in my wheelchair now am I?" Spencer frowned.
"One day you will again, I know it." Derek promised.
"So where is this case anyway?" Spencer changed the subject.
"That my friend, is the second reason why Hotch thought you might like to come with us. I'll let him tell you." Morgan replied. "But now you should probably call your future wife and tell her you won't be home tonight." he added with a grin.
"A baby."
Annie still couldn't stop whispering the words, however often she said them out loud. It was like she could already feel the new life growing inside of her. She had sent Sarah home an hour earlier, feigning tiredness. The truth was, as much as the pregnancy freaked her out at first, she had suddenly felt the overwhelming need to be alone for a while.
So she had gotten comfortable on their couch, her feet resting on the low coffee table. Both her hands were resting on her belly while her brain couldn't stop imagining the future. In a few months there would be a considerable bump just where her hands now rested. She was already yearning for the moment she would feel the baby move. And even more so to hold it in her arms for the first time. Would it be a boy or a girl? She smiled as she thought of a little mini Spence with tousled hair, a button nose and his father's grin. She imagined Spencer reading to their child every night, his calm voice slowly lulling him or her to sleep.
She gave a content sigh, her hand absent-mindedly stroking her belly. In just a few hours Spence would be home and she could finally share this with him.
A smile spread across her face when her phone on the table buzzed and she saw Spence's face on the screen.
"Hi honey, what's up?" she answered, hoping he wouldn't be able to hear the giddiness in her voice.
"Hey sunshine. I... um, the team has a new case and they need me to come with them. Something about boxes full of diaries that could give us clues."
"Oh."
Annie's heart fell. Her first reaction was to protest. Not because she couldn't wait to tell him her news. No, because it would be the first time since that fateful case that he would be out in the field again. But then she stopped herself. This was his job, he loved it and it made him feel useful. And he needed to feel useful now more than ever. It was just one more step back to normal. Besides, she knew the team would keep him out of harms way.
"Listen, I know you're worried but I will spent most of the time at the local police station reading so..."
Annie quickly cut him off. "I know. I know honey. I know how much this means to you, I really do. So don't worry about me. Just come back home as quickly as you can."
She smiled when she heard Spencer breathe out before he replied.
"You know you're the best, right?"
Her smile spread into a grin. "Of course I know." she teased.
"Well then I guess you also already know I love you." Annie could hear the smile in his voice.
"I do. Still can't get enough of you telling me." she grinned. Even after a year he still had the ability to make her feel like a lovestruck teenager.
"I that case. I love you."
"I love you too." she whispered before she hung up.
Dropping the phone on the couch next to her, she stroked her belly again.
"Well little one, seems like we'll have to wait a bit longer to tell your daddy about you."
Awe, a little fluff at the end. :D I know this was kind of a filler chapter but I needed it to get my story to where I want it to be. If that makes any sense.
Anyway. Where do you think the case will lead Spence? Will he find the perfect ring? And how do you think will Annie tell him about the pregnancy? Let me know what you think in a review!
