"Wow, Double Dee, this is great!"
"Hm?" The called-upon Ed looked up from his computer screen to where Nazz was sitting at her own terminal.
"What you wrote for the football spread; it's really great, dude!" The blonde repeated, gesturing to her screen.
"Oh, my, uh…" Edd blushed slightly, looking away from Nazz and back to his work, "Thank you very much, Nazz."
Not for the first time, Edd wished more students than just he and Nazz had taken an interest in the school yearbook. Not only would there be more hands to share the work, but there might actually be someone to distract Nazz from complimenting his writing.
"I mean, I was kinda thinking this when I took the picture, I guess, but you made it sound about a hundred times better than it came out in my head." She was still grinning over at him.
"Well, I must say, your photos provide plenty of inspirational fodder when it comes to writing about school activities." Edd replied, smiling shyly but steadfastly refusing to look up from his screen.
It wasn't as though he didn't enjoy being complimented on his work; he enjoyed praise as much as the next person. Coming from Nazz, however, praise was terribly distracting and made him blush something awful. And as co-editor-in-chief and head photographer of the Peach Creek High School year book, Nazz had plenty of reason to be going over his work and found plenty of things to tell him she liked about it.
"Thanks, dude. But seriously, I wish kids would notice your contributions more… They're always telling me what great pictures I take for the book, but it'd be so lame without your articles." The girl continued.
Edd's mouth rearranged itself into a slight frown. "Don't sell yourself short, Nazz. Your photos are wonderful; dynamic and full of life. They put something into the spreads my articles never could. Really, I think it's our efforts combined that make the yearbook what it is." Ducking his head, Edd reigned his speech in, "Anyway, I'm perfectly happy to be working behind the scenes, as it were."
This seemed to be the nature of his and Nazz's relationship. While the blonde would star in the school play, head up the student council, go out and take photos of school events, and headline in all the girls' sports, Edd worked backstage, took on secretary and treasurer jobs, put words to pictures, and wiped the floor at academic competitions. Nazz was the bright face of the student body, representing them and interacting with them, while Edd was the unseen framework, holding them up and making sure everything ran smoothly. Edd often considered himself lucky, in this way, they went to such a small school. "Oh, crap!" Nazz drew the hatted boy out of his reverie, "I'm gonna be late for cheer practice!"
She gathered her things from where they'd been strewn about the almost closet-like "yearbook room" and pulled on her jacket. "Hey, Double Dee," Edd looked over just in time to see Nazz's face nearing his. Her lips connected briefly with his and she pulled back smiling. "Keep up the good work."
The she was gone, leaving behind a whiff of floral perfume and a profusely red boy. "Oh, my…"
