Jason braced himself as he rang the doorbell to the Jackson residence. By now all the kids were likely packed in and at the sight of their favorite "Uncles" all Hades would break lose.
"Enter the terrors," Nico, Jason's long term boyfriend, muttered beside him. Jason couldn't help but agree with him; Percy's kids seemed to have inherited his knack for trouble and don't even get him started on Frank's little demons. No pun intended.
The door was yanked open by a flustered Annabeth who quickly deposited an infant into Jason's arms before she darted into her room.
"Wait!" He protested rather unsuccessfully, as she was already out of earshot.
"Better you than me," Nico laughed. He had spoken too soon however; moments later a toddler he identified as Percy's middle child, Clio, had jumped into Nico's arms. Kids swarmed them and grabbed at their legs; the eldest child was Percy's oldest, a spitting image of him named Theseus. He was only 6 years old.
The baby in his arms whimpered at him as he readjusted the way he held her. Her green eyes peered at him in interest when he brushed her blond plume of hair out of her face.
"Hello little Thalia," Jason whispered. She was just 5 months old, and this would be Percy and Annabeth's first date night since she was born.
"Uh, a little help maybe?" Nico called from the ground where he was being used as a jungle gym.
"Better you than me," Jason teased. That was the moment that baby Thalia decided to throw up on his shoulder.
"ANNABETH!" He yelled.
"Oh, now you want help. I see, your boyfriend being turned into a jungle gym wasn't a good enough reason, but the gods forbid a baby puke on you," Nico snapped from where he was pinned to the floor. Hazel came into the family room from the kitchen, and with the help of Frank, removed the four children who had dog piled on him.
"It's so good to see you," Hazel smiled as she pulled him into a tight hug. After the war, her and Frank had moved into New Rome while the rest of them remained in New York. They were there for an extended visit, with the possibility of coming back for good. They missed their friends and family too much to stay away.
Frankly, Jason was surprised the two of them even had any children as innocent as they both were. Just the mention of someone else doing the deed had Hazel blushing furiously still. Percy finally emerged and took his baby back from Jason, who was quite thankful. He had nothing against families, but babies weren't really the son of Jupiter's thing.
"You just need to stay calm and keep her close," Percy coached as he rocked the little one to sleep.
"Okay, I'm ready," Annabeth called as she swept back into the room. Jason may have been gay, but he certainly wasn't blind. The blonde daughter of Athena cleaned up quite nicely compared to the frazzled woman who had let him into the house. The doorbell sounded again behind them and Nico hurriedly opened it to get away from the kids.
"Uncle Leo!" The kids squealed as he came inside.
"That's Commander to you, soldier," Leo joked as he picked Clio up in his arms and twirled her around.
"Are you sure you'll be okay with all of them?" Annabeth asked. She seemed hesitant to leave even though she had proposed the date night in the first place.
"He'll be fine," Percy assured her and he hurried her out the door before she changed her mind.
"Don't forget the bottles. Oh and you remember the bedtimes? Leo…"
"I got it, I got it. You just go and have a good time Mrs. Jackson, I can handle a few superhuman toddlers for a couple hours," Leo said as he slammed the door shut in their faces. Suddenly the door opened again and Leo's face peered out at them again. With a wink he smirked at Jason and said, "Good luck man."
"What's he talking about Jase?" Nico asked.
"Nothing," he muttered in reply, "Let's just try to have a good night okay?"
"Yeah sure. Why wouldn't we?" Jason didn't reply as he drove them in silence to the restaurant. Nico could tell Jason was nervous but he couldn't fathom why. Nico blamed it on the fact he still was a blushing virgin and nothing would ever happen in the bedroom if he didn't initiate it. Honestly, it's not like Nico would ever turn sex down.
"You okay? You kinda look like you're going to hurl like baby Thalia did," Nico said because for some reason Jason's awkwardness was really irritating him this particular evening.
"I'm fine," Jason said, sounding anything but fine. Jason ushered him to the table in the restaurant without a word. Nico brushed it off; he just wanted to have a good evening with his sister, Hazel, and boyfriend. Was that too much to ask?
Apparently so, because all through dinner Jason continued to act like it was their first date, while the others stared at him like he was some kind of side show. It was like they were waiting for something to happen.
"Okay I can't take it any longer," Nico practically screamed at the table, "What in the name of Zeus is going on here?" They all just looked at him like he was a hydra, or Kronos maybe? Was he the only one that noticed they had been sitting in complete silence for the last hour?
Jason cleared his throat before he dropped onto one knee in front of the angry Italian.
"Nico, I know I'm not exactly what you had in mind when we started dating and I know we're kinda a complete mess 90% of the time. But you're all I ever wanted. And I'm not good at this romance stuff, but what I'm trying to say is… Nico, will you marry me?"
"You're the cheesiest piece of shit in the whole world, you know that?" Nico said when his breath hitched in his throat.
"So…" Jason said, still kneeling on the floor.
"Of course I will," Nico laughed before he crashed his lips into a stunned Jason's.
"Yes?" Jason said in wonder.
"Yes! Now kiss me you fool!" So Jason did.
And it was the best middle-of-a-restaurant kiss ever.
