Chapter 29
Sophie felt a twinge of guilt, as Mr Sir yelled in Squid's face and clipped him round the ear for being late. Squid looked pink and blotchy, his eyes downcast, avoiding everyone around him. Sophie anxiously bit on her thumbnail and tore her eyes away.
The D-tent boys had already started walking towards their digging spot, Sophie jogged to keep up with them, and to increase the distance between her and Squid. The boys were in high-spirits, despite the early morning and day of digging ahead, they were still laughing and talking about Squid's appearance that morning, accusing one another of being the culprit. Sophie tried not to smile or to let herself give anything away.
"It was you, wasn't it, X-ray? Putting Squid in his place?" accused Armpit, swinging his shovel over his shoulders.
"I'd love to say it was, dawg," X-ray laughed, "But do you really think I'd do it so secretively? I'd let you guys in on it!"
"It could be a conspiracy, you know," Zigzag mused.
"Naw, it was Magnet. He's good at sneaking around, soundlessly. He's the only one of us who would get away with it," X-ray stated, matter-of-factly.
Magnet chuckled, "maybe it was!" A blur of orange shot up behind him and wrestled him to the ground before 'was,' had barely left his lips.
Squid had Magnet pinned down and was laying punches into him, dust billowed up around them, causing the whole thing to be a frenzied, dusty blur.
Magnet tried to push him off, gasping, as the wind had been knocked out of him, "Dudeā¦dude, listen to me," he gasped. Squid stopped punching but kept Magnet pinned down, poised threateningly above him.
"Dawg, it wasn't me! I was just kidding, I swear, it wasn't me," Magnet's eyes were wide, almost pleading.
Squid released him, leaving Magnet to awkwardly clamber to his feet, brushing the dust off of him and wiping blood from his cracked lip.
"When I find out who it was that did it," Squid addressed the group who had all backed away slightly, forming almost a semi-circle around him, "you're dead, I swear."
And with that he grabbed his abandoned shovel and marched off towards the digging site.
Sophie glared down at the floor.
