Kurt, Lily, and Neil continued moving east through the center of the island, no longer wanting to be anywhere near the fortress. Due to the bitemark on his cheek from Daniel, Kurt wore several makeshift bandages crudely fashioned and tied together from pieces of Lily's light blue shirt; it almost resembled an eyepatch that had slid down his face.
"How's your leg feeling?" Lily asked Kurt, concerned about his limp.
"It's fine," Kurt responded, "just a little sore. I'm more concerned about the scar I'm probably gonna have for the rest of my life."
"You know," Lily said comfortingly, "a lotta girls think scars are sexy." She then gave him a smirk, unable to believe she could tell a joke at a time like this.
"We'll get him Kurt," Neil chimed in, "and give him a wound he can't come back from."
"You're right," Lily added, "we don't rescue him. We get everyone else out of here and leave Daniel to rot."
Kurt's eyes widened; he was surprised to see Lily hardening up.
"Some people," Neil continued, "are just born bad. Daniel has been clearly fucked up for as long as I've known him and I'm sorry to say this, but he shouldn't be in any sort of civilized society. We figure out a way off this island, we shoot him dead first." He paused. "Wouldn't surprise me if the Administrator looked into this class and took us specifically because Daniel would, y'know, shake things up."
"Like…they want him to win?" Kurt asked, concerned.
Neil sighed. "You don't find even a little suspicious that the craziest kid in class got probably the most powerful gun here? At least that we've heard?"
Kurt looked off pensively. "I don't know…maybe…"
"He's their pre-determined winner," Neil doubled down, "and whatever crazy scheme they have, he most likely fits into it perfectly."
"I disagree," Lily cut in. "Not about them giving him an advantage, but about people being born bad. I think Daniel IS bad, and we need to stop him, but I find it hard to believe he came out of the womb that way. I think something happened to make him this way. I think that bad things happen to people and it damages them, sometimes beyond repair."
Neil shook his head. "No. Bad shit happens to all of us. How you deal with it afterwards depends on whatever wiring your head has." He paused. "Either way, we can't help him. Except maybe by putting a bullet in him." He paused again. "And next time, I'm not gonna shoot to scare."
…
Donna had been wandering aimlessly around the island since nearly being found in the customs house by Alan and Jack. She didn't really know either of them too well so she couldn't risk them being threats and finding her. Since that near miss, she had been lucky enough to avoid being spotted by anyone, though this also meant that she was missing her best friend Zachary more and more with each solitary moment.
She held her hammer in her right hand, hoping she wouldn't have to use it, but the possibility of being forced to was gnawing at her mind. Suddenly, gunfire rang out, and Donna, feeling the pain of the bullets, fell to the ground.
"Gotcha bitch," Rachel said confidently, having used the last four bullets in the clip of Katheryn's Browning Hi-Power to shoot Donna. As she reached into her bag for another clip, she walked over to Donna's body. Rachel was impressed with herself, having hit her target from about fifty feet away; I'm a natural, she thought to herself.
She looked Donna over: her hammer was still in her hand and her bag had partially slid off her shoulder during the fall. Finding the hammer irrelevant, she decided not to take it, and roughly yanked Donna's bag free. As she dug through it, a harsh blow hit her in the side of the head.
It was Donna.
Upon hearing the gunfire, Donna's body reacted as though it had been hit and collapsed. But Donna soon came to realize that she was not actually hit and played dead, hoping that the shooter would just move on. But as she heard the person approach, she became overwhelmed with fear that they were coming to finish the job and resigned herself to her fate. Luckily for her, Rachel's overconfidence just drew her to the bag, and Donna knew this was her only chance of survival and struck her with the hammer Rachel had no interest in.
The hit caused Rachel to fire the gun into the ground, popping up a cloud of dirt. Donna then dropped the hammer and dove onto Rachel, wrestling for the gun. Rachel, who had just come back to her senses, wrapped both her hands around the gun as both girls fell to the ground. As Rachel got on top of Donna, with a look of pure rage in her eyes, Donna took her left hand off the gun and dug her thumb into Rachel's eye, causing the latter to scream in pain. Rachel had no choice but to take her right hand off the gun and pry Donna's hand free from her face. As she did that, Donna bit Rachel's left hand, which was still grabbing the gun, and freed Rachel's grip. Donna then stood up, gun in hand, and despite everything – Rachel bullying her in school, trying to kill her here, having most likely already killed other students, etc. – Donna was having trouble pulling the trigger.
Why can't I do this, she thought to herself. Rachel deserves this, it's self-defense, I don't wanna die –
She hesitated too long. Rachel grabbed a handful of dirt and threw it in Donna's face. Rachel then tackled her to the ground, causing her to drop the gun. She tried to go for it, but Donna had grabbed her hair and was pulling on it, deliberately trying to tear it out. Rachel roared in pain, but found the strength to punch Donna right in the face. She then went for Oliver's kitchen knife, which she had hidden up her skirt, and pulled it out. Donna saw it and grabbed it, doing her best to hold it away from her as Rachel once again got on top of her. As she held the knife back with all her might, Donna looked over and saw that her hammer was within arm's reach, but it was different from the struggle for the gun: since the gun wasn't pointed especially close to her, she had enough leeway to take a hand off and go Rachel's eye, but taking one of her hands off the knife would likely result in Rachel being able to stab her.
At that moment, she had a likely painful idea.
She took her right hand off the knife (the hammer was to her right), and instead of holding back Rachel, she decided to redirect her strength into letting her stab her in the left shoulder. The pain was excruciating, but Donna was nevertheless able to grab the hammer and hit Rachel in the left temple with it a second after being stabbed, screaming in the process. The hit loosened Rachel's grasp on the knife, and she fell to the ground, stunned and bleeding from the hit.
The hesitation Donna felt before was gone. All she could feel was intense pain and anger. She slowly pulled the knife out of her shoulder, once again yelling in agony, and the still-conscious Rachel looked up at her from her knees in fear. Donna then angrily kicked her in the face, which caused her to roll over and lie flat on the ground. She then picked her hammer back up and knelt down above Rachel, putting her legs around either side of the fallen Queen Bee.
"Please…" Rachel said weakly, "don't…"
But Donna didn't listen. All the years of tormenting, bullying, and insults had boiled over into a seething rage, and Donna proceeded to bash her hammer directly into Rachel's face. Then again. And again. And again.
In total, between the initial defensive hits and the personalized execution, Donna hit Rachel thirty-nine times with her hammer, leaving the face of the (former) prettiest girl in school looking like a dropped jar of marinara sauce. When all was said and done, the Donna that Zachary had spent the majority of the game looking for was gone. All that remained was a nearly feral creature created by The Program.
Donna then looked to the sky, and let out a fierce, almost animalistic scream.
