Disclaimer: I don't own the fantastic Gunpowder and Lead collection. That's the amazing Rorke's Drift.
"You see that's why I don't like guns."
Guns make people stupid.
Not just about the range, although that mistake was pretty damn universal. Even with people who should damn well know better. Even trained people. Put a gun in someone's hand and their brain goes out the window with the chance to walk away. Hubris in a holster.
And guns make it easy. Any idiot can pick up a gun- an' if he wasn't an idiot before he picked up that gun, He. Will. Be.-and turn themselves into a threat. As much to themselves, usually, as anyone else. Because they're sure they can use it. Because it's easy.
And there's an even worse way they make it easy. With a gun, you didn't have to hear breathing stop, you didn't have to see blue or brown or green or grey or black or hazel or gold eyes lose their light, you couldn't smell anything but the shot you'd just fired, you didn't have to taste their fear and your regret in the air, feel the life beneath their skin before you ended it. You could just walk away. Guns made it easy to forget. And forgetting?
That made you worse than stupid. That made you a monster.
