Chapter 29

"Saito…..I…..lov…" Louise fell into the arms of Saito as her body went limp. Everything around her went dark. 'What...what's happening?..' her body and mind felt like they were being forcefully shut down. Only the sound that could be heard were tears hitting the floor.

A glorious sunshine slowly filled the room with warmth and light. She felt content, Louise opened her eyes slowly as she stretched. In process catching Saito in face with her outstretched arms.

"Oww…..imma get up nowww…." He moaned as he was forcefully woken by blunt force trauma to the face.

"Ooh gomen gomen Saito.." Louise muttered as she stroked his hair. She sat upwards on her bed. The outside world looked so peaceful. Some of the students were practising magic outside while others were waited by maids and other such servants. 'Somethings wrong….' A dark thought crept into her mind but before she could act on it.

"Louise we need to get something to eat and then we can go see professor Colbert, he wanted to see us." Saito spoke up happily as he got out of the bed and stood up taking of the top he was using as a nightshirt, Louise gasped when she saw his back. It was completely unscathed. No imperfections of any kind.

'what's going on? His back is supposed to be scarred? Professor Colbert is dead…..what's happening?' Louise felt panic bubble in her chest. Reality and her psyche were clashing.

"Hey beautiful….are we going?" Saito spoke up as he grabbed her hand dragging her out of her internal conflict.

'This….this is perfect….' She smiled as she looked at Saito, nodding once before she walked to get chained at her wardrobe.

Once clothed and fed Saito and Louise made their way to professor Colbert only to be stopped by Louise's eldest Sister.

"Ahh my lovely little sister how are you on this fine day?" Elenore asked as she waved to then inside the stone built hallways.

'Since when was Neesamma like this?' Louise yet again had a spike of panic in her heart.

"Hmm Louise is everything alright?" Saito asked as he looked at Louise as her face had gone pale.

"huh Oh yes….I am just a bit tired…" She responded, a smile forming across her face. 'Yeah, everything's fine….' She followed Saito where she saw her friends shouting and playing with their magics.

"Ahh Louise the hero!" Kirche shouted from across the fields. 'Hero? But I was known as the Zero….wasn't I?' Her mind and heart began to ache. She fell to her knees, everything hurt. She felt like everything she knew was a lie. Her heart was beating incredibly fast and she was sure something was wrong with herself.

"Hey Louise…..I knew it your not feeling well!" The voice of her loving familiar picker her up before she had chance to protest, carrying her bridal style back toward the bed tower.

She felt so safe, secure in his arms, she didn't realise it but she felt her eyelids close turning her world to one of darkness.

Lousie awoke in her bed tucked in and pillows fluffed for comfort. "Ahh you're awake, I was so worried about you!" She turned her head to the left to see Saito sat next to her. "Saito…..I had a terrible dream. You were hurt saving me from an Albion war dragon."

"Albion war dragon, Lousie, Tristraine is at peace. Everything is right with the word." Saito said, with a baffled voice as he looked at her. "I knew it you are exhausted from all the hard work you've been doing arch mage candidate."

"Arch Mage?...But….those positions are only for…..master mages…..what's happening?" Her voice was breaking. She sat up right, her hands on her temples.

"Saito WHAT'S HAPPENING?!" She screamed at him, tears were forming in her eyes. Then something happened she didn't expect. Her Familiar sighed loudly as if her outburst had annoyed him.

"You couldn't have just enjoyed this world for a time. They went through so much to create it for you…" His voice had changed, it was distorted, out of sync with the world around him, even his very body seemed to flicker.

"What are you?" She said fearfully as she backed away from him, her back touching the head bored of her bed.

"Me…..well little lady, I a merely an emotional construct built from you subconscious." The image of her familiar took the form of a shadowed version of Saito. "Well, it should of been long enough anyway. With every word, the ground around them broke away. The buildings around her turned to dust, even the setting sun across the field started to fade away.

"What's happening?" She said in a panic as more and more of surroundings crumbled into darkness.

"It's been fun little lady, I had hoped we could of spent more time together." The shadow vanished into the crumbling embrace that surrounded her, till her very footing crumbled beneath her letting gravity claim her pulling Louise into the dark abyss that opened to consume her. And all the while she screamed a name….."Saito!" Desperately calling for a savior.

Saito cried as he held the sleeping beauty in his arms.

"Kid…..we could try to run with her." The Demon spoke cautiously with every word.

"If we did, she would hate me, I just said I love her. I can't run away now...I just wished I let her say it back…" He spoke with pain in his voice and tears running down his face. A sigh escaped his mouth as he wiped his face and stood up.

"It time…" The soothing voice of Lucina spoke as Saito lifted Louise in his arms, leaving the small church to find the enigmatic Julio leaning against the wall.

"I heard she had accepted the rear guard mission. I had tried to find her to persuade her….but from this look of it, you have already done it." He spoke calmly as Saito walked up to him.

"You always arrive at the most perfect time. Can you take her to the boat?" Saito asked as he lifted Louise into Julio's arm

"Sure, and who's gonna be the rear guard?" He asked despite knowing full well who it was.

"Must you ask?" Saito said as he stroked Louise's sleeping face once.

"Then why? Why would you throw away your life for honour?" Julio asked his voice sounded that of a sceptic.

"Oh...it's not for honour. I told Louise I love her…..those words would lose all meaning if I ran away." Saito spoke as he turned away from Julio.

"I was tempted to say I love you back then…" Julio said with a bright smile across his face.

Saito coughed loudly before he tilted his head. "That would not make me happy at all."

"Well good luck..."

"You too."

Saito turned and ran towards the city of Roscythe, he could hear the murmuring horde advance clearing the way of any resistance for the Albion army.

He ran as fast as his body could allow, the sun was setting and the embrace of night fell on this abandoned city.

The last ship was preparing to leave Roscythe docks, where the leader of the musketeers Agnes, ordered people to bored the ship as soon as possible. Screaming "The enemy is outside of Roscythe hurry, the boats will be leaving soon."

As the panicked civilians scattered to get onto the boats, a single swordsman stood in the way of the enchanted horde. Saito stood in surrounded by a full battalion of troops but he did not show any fear, blades drawn he threw himself into the fight. "I will not allow anyone of you to reach the docks!" he shouted.

Aboard the final boat the cardinal had informed Henrietta of her dear friend's scarife. "Stop the ship I am getting Louise." She ordered as she walked passed the Cardinal only to be stopped by him. In panic she screamed "Let go off me!"

"You can't your highness!" The Cardinal begged as he held her gently

"I can't let Louise pay for this!" Henrietta screamed as she forced herself forward, she turned to see the cardinal on his knees.

"You can't your highness, if you go not only will this be a crushing defeat but our country will crumble to disarray. If you go Miss Valliere's noble sacrifice will be in vein."

"But, I can't let…" henrietta fell to her knees not knowing what to do broke down into tears just as the boat left port. Sailing away from the army bearing down upon them.

Julio gently rested Louise on the escape boat just as she started to awake. She slowly opened her eyes to see the smiling face of Julio looking down at her. "Are you awake sleeping beauty?" He asked playfully.

"Huh….it was a dream?" She asked groggerly, as her mind and memories slowly returned. She looked around seeing her surroundings. "I'm...on…..a ship…. ?Huh I have to stop the enemy!" She said in a startled yelp as she burst forward, running into Siesta whom looked terrified.

"Miss Valliere where is Saito?" Siesta asked with small tears in her eyes.

"Saito...Where is Saito?" Louise asked as she realised her familiar was nowhere to be seen.

"He isn't here…...he has gone to stop Albion's army alone.."Julio stated, his face hidden as he looked down. Both Siesta and Louise let gasps of shock and fear.

"What...what did you say?" Louise asked in disbelief.

"He has gone to fight 70,000 men while you were trapped in a sleeping spell." Julio answered as he looked at her in the eyes. Siesta gasped in fear before she fainted, being catched by her cousin Jessica.

"In order to save me….." Louise ran to the side of the screaming his name, begging to save him.

Saito stood in the open fields in front of Roscythe, the entirety of the bewitched horde lay on the ground behind him. His breath ragged. "Why, did I have to run into that?" He asked as a huge mass of soldiers spiralled out in front of him, supplied even with monsters such as ogers to fight on their behalf.

"For your loved one right?" Delf asked as Saito drew him and Mervina out of their scabbards. The image of Louise flashed in Saito's eyes at the mere mention of her.

"This is end huh….didn't expect to gout this way.." He mused himself.

"Well don't die on your knees!" Mervina boasted.

"Yeah die standing like a true warrior!" Delf added a hint of humor in his voice.

"Yeah I am guessing you are right!" Saito roared as he burst forward into the horde of Albion. His twin blades catching ablaze with his power, Mervina bathed in golden flames while Delf was covered in dark purple flames. As he ran towards the army, the assembled army laughed, thinking 'How could a lone swordsman stop us." Yet before they could even do so much as make an insult at him Saito flew other half of the front line of soldiers. He swung both swords to the left and right, the rune of Gandalfr glowed with power as he did so, creating a shockwave so powerful a few hundred soldiers were blown of their feet before they could even brace themselves. Yet, Saito did not relent. He surged forward as a line of fire and death was unleashed upon him from the Magus lines.

"Damn you all!" He roared as he slashed and countered each spell with ease, not stopping to he got to their lines, dicing their staffs first before he injured the mages, despite the fact that he was going to die, he still refused to hurt fellow humans.

"Kid, if you don't get serious you won't buy enough time for the ship." Arghast spoke angrily in his mind. Yet, Saito did not respond as he looked up to see a rain of arrows, block out the moon. He roared angrily as golden sparks surged all over his body raising both his hand and a golden sphere surged around him. The arrows either burned upon impact or bounce harmlessly of his shield. As the rain of death ended Saito lowered his arms, and the rivers of blood poured from both arms, he could barely hold onto the two blades. His arms were lacerated and bleeding heavily, casting the spell and pushing his body too such an extent had costed him dearly.

"Saito, fall back please…" The voice of a begging mother echoed within him and he knew that his caring Angel loved him.

"I am sorry Lucina…...but I can't, though I will not ask you to die with me, before the end, leave me." He spoke quietly as he dropped the two blades.
"How can you say such a thing?!" Lucina screamed angrily.

"Kid we're with you all the way!" Arghast said as the siege division of the army lowered the canons aiming them at Saito.

"Demon armour and strength…." Saito requested as blackened scales covered his right arm and reinforced it.

Louise stood at the handrail of the ship, Mr Scarron holding her back.

"Louise it's too late now!" He begged as he held her with all his strength.

"No...it isn't too late, I will fight with Saito, I can't let him die all alone." Louise screamed as she fought against Scarron, tears pouring down her face.

High in the clouds above a lone pair of women stood upon a blackened manta ray. "She's in pain…..let's make it worse." The demoness Lilith spoke, a perverse and sadistic voice left her lips. She wore a bright blood red dress, as she stood proudly upon her beast. The second women, the infamous and mischievous Sheffield knelt beside her. "How will we inflict more pain upon her my lady?"

"Oh that? That is simple, we will show her what she wants above all else, let her see Saito." Lilith spoke as her deranged grin grew, she raised her arms and s stone owl appeared in her left palm. While, a winged eyeball appeared above the right. "Corpse eye, watch Saito's death. Owl show what you see to the mage." The two creations flew off into the distance, the eye to the battle. The owl to the ship.

Louise stopped fighting as she saw owl land in front of her, it's eyes lighting up projection a image, onto the night sky above Louise. An in her horror she saw Saito, he dropped his blades, a sea of arrows surround him.

"No….." She fell to her knees as she saw the cannons take aim at him. Despair and pain filling her. Before she could see more, the sound of a gunshot rang through the air and the owl exploded into rock. Louise turned to see the leader of the musketeers Agnes, her pistol smoking as she pointed it at the smoking remains.

"Agnes…..?" Louise asked in despair and pain.

"No one should be forced to such pain.." Agnes stated as she walked towards Louise and hugged her tightly.

The sound of cannon fire roared through the air. Saito looked up as the ball of metal flew towards him, he smashed his armoured fist into it with such force that the cannonball was redirected back to the cannon destroying it and throwing the crew into disarray. "...I…..I can't keep this up.."Saito said, his voice no more than a whisper as stood in the same position, his arm erupting like a fountain of blood. The army seemingly in complete fear and anguish at the power of this lone monster, unleash their ogers. The hulking brutes charged forward at Saito. "More demonic strength!" He roared as the closest oger tried to crush him under his gargantuan weight. Saito caught the foot and swung the oger around into the rest of its kin. But, all the while Saito's body continued to fail, more and more wounds started to appear all over him.

"...I….need to….end this now…." Saito said in between bloodied coughs, He raised his two arms together and his staff emerged ready to carry out his will. "..This is gonna be big!" Saito roared as the army of Albion readied for an all out bombardment, the magus lines raised their wands, the longbow lines followed suit, while artillery lines took aim and muskeet lines took form. The staff surged with power and a pillar of grey light burst into the night sky illuminating the entire area.

Louise cried into Agnes' arms when suddenly a beam of light surged behind her, she turned to see it come from the distant Albion. A sigh of fear left her lips. "...no Saito…" She whispered. For, she knew that using his power he paid a heavy price, and if he was using such a powerful spell, the toll was going to be dear.

Saito was barely able to stand, the two swords and returned to their scarboards, while Saito brought the light of day to the land. He roared like beast, as he channeled everything he could into the staff, demonic and angelic energy fused in it. Into a maelstrom of cataclysmic power. He slammed it into the ground and the very island itself shook.
