Abe, "Sahara, open your eyes honey. Sahara come back to me, come back to us!" He slid his hand onto the side of her face lowering his voice, "I can't lose you. I already lost Nuala, I can't lose you too. I won't be able to take it Sahara. I-I was wrong, I took you for granted but I will never do that again. I need you, don't leave me now. Sahara!"
The sound of a helicopter grew in the distance soon making its landing into the gorge. Abe looked up at it breathing hard with tears streaming down his cheeks. Two men climbed out and were briefed about the situation. With Johann's orders and his extreme paranoid caution in not to move a single inch of her body, they lifted her and slid her into the copter with over-the-top care. The team piled in around her, taking the lion's body in last shoving him in the back somehow.
Johann, Liz, and Hellboy stood staring down at their friend who lay unconscious or possibly dead. Liz, never being one to break down in public, was bawling her eyes out into Hellboy's chest. Abe was still bent over her, scanning her by hovering his hand over body.
Abe, "Her heartbeat is faint but I feel in her spirit a strength unmatched before, it's as if its writhing to rile up the life within, a fire.…she's struggling….we need to get to the base now!"
From the passenger seat of the copter the agent turned and shouted to them, "The quickest estimated time is two hours so if any of you pray, I suggest you do a lot of it!"
The team all crouched down on their knees, their hands interlocked with one another; Abe kept one on Sahara, firmly planting it on her stomach. They all bowed their heads and closed their eyes.
Abe, "My God, I know that Sahara puts all of us to shame with prayer but here I am, we are, to ask of You to save her. She is too valuable and precious to us and I know she is to You too. But I plead that You don't take her away just yet, we all need her. Can You allow her to stay? I know I won't be able to handle the rest of my waking days without her, she means too much…My days will be much darker if…."
He paused and bowed his head to wipe away the tears, unable to go on. He was careful to not break his contact with Sahara or with Hellboy's hand.
Hellboy, "Hey Man upstairs, I know I don't really talk with Ya much but I know father is there watching there with Ya….Don't punish kitten for anything ok? I mean, I know I'm a devil and all and that I've gotten her into some trouble over the years, with me." He said with a laugh, "But we need her, I can try to understand You taking father away but I won't be able to understand You taking Sahara away…she's too good, too pure and innocent. The world needs her and needs more of her so if You can wake her up for us that would be great because I know I want to be an uncle with her cubs of joy!"
The team chuckled a bit at this but soon returned back to their solemn state. Johann began to speak but in complete german, probably praying as he knew how. Eventually silence remained and on their knees did they stay for the duration of the flight. No one lifted their head or opened an eye but silently prayed over and over again to themselves for Sahara to wake up and live. Abe kept a firm reading on her as well. Her heart didn't grow stronger or beat louder but it remained constant, not growing any fainter. Her spirit though was weakening by the minute, the fire and energy he felt was fading away but to where exactly? Where? She can't die! She just can't!
…
Time seemed to fly by and at the same time stand still as the two hours came to an end. True to the hopeful estimation the team touched base in the time appointed. Like lightning the crew hopped out and gently but rapidly transported Sahara's body to Medical Chamber A. Abe was hot on their heels ready to jump into the action but seeing as he was too emotionally distraught they barred him from the room. Hellboy kept him back and they tried to calm his rising panic.
The team was on pins and needles but they didn't have to wait long for barely an hour passed before they opened the glass doors to them. They all jumped to their feet expecting the worse however both the worst nor the good could be given at this moment.
The expert said told them that Sahara was unconscious and stable but they didn't know how long that that would last. An x-ray showed that her entire skeleton was cracked and broken, they weren't sure how she would come out afterwards or if she ever will. They all were given allowance to be with her. They crowded around her body as it laid on the metal slab hooked up to the many noisy monitors. No one said a word just kept their silent vigil as they did on the copter.
Eventually everyone left, one by one, except for Abe. He sat in the chair nearest the door and propped it up sideways parallel to the slab. This was all too familiar for him as he remembered back to when he had to give the transfusion to her sitting in the exact same manner as he was now. He closed his eyes and sighed. Bowing his head he began to shake as the sobs came heavily upon him.
Lifting teary eyes up to her he said, "My emotions are clear now Sahara. I know how I feel and I hate that the revelation had to come at the potential cost of your life. I love you Sara….I'm such an idiot for messing it up….you'd think I'd be smart all the time but I'm not. I'm a fool to ignore you the way I did and now it's probably too late. Don't leave me now, I promise you that if you come out of this that I'll love you in such a way that when you wake up in the morning you'll immediately break out into song always having you in my arms. And when you go to sleep every night even your nightmares won't be able to touch you for I will fill your dreams and guard your mind. I love you Sahara Savannah, don't give up now….Oh God, please…"
He bit his finger as he cried and shuddered, unable to get any more prayer or words out.
He straightened up gazing at her with his face contorted in unmasked grief. He lifted his arm and laid his hand on her stomach.
Immediately her eyes shot open. Her gold irises were shining brighter than he had ever seen before. The machines were quickening their nosies and growing louder in volume. He brought his attention to the monitor with the x-ray of her skeleton. He saw that a thick white vein was forming throughout her body, bringing all of her bones back together again. The room shook and she uttered this phrase:
"You have conquered death."
Closing his eyes and looking within the vision he saw vibrant gold coursing through her bones glowing and sewing everything back together. He felt that her skeleton was stronger than any metal he ever came across with. He could feel and see her inward body transforming with life. Her heart was beating widely and her spirit was growing in size, pulsating the gold color throughout her body.
Abe, "Red, Liz get in here!"
The room was still shaking as the two ran in, Johann popped around the corner.
Johann, "What is going on Agent Sapien? I felt ze earthquake from within my quarters!"
Liz, "What's happening Blue?"
Abe, "I am not sure. Look on her x-ray monitor you can see that her bones have a line coursing through them and as I look within all I see is gold and a gold vein sewing her splintered bones together. Her eyes are glowing too! I can tell you I've rarely felt this sensation before, her life is so vibrant and pulsating, her spirit is overflowing! And she said, 'You have conquered death' when she opened her eyes."
Hellboy repeated the words and replied, "Didn't the Black Wolf say that to her when we it left back in the woods?"
He nodded.
Their attention snapped back to her, the shaking became more powerful and slowly her body rose up to a sitting position. Her eyes were glowing bright. She closed them as she lifted her chin then gasped as her eyes flashed open causing a bright light to spread across the room. Shielding their eyes from the blinding light they saw everything go back to normal and the trembling stopped. However Sahara moaned and started to fall forward. Abe was there to catch her and he lifted her up to sit more comfortably on the slab.
She grabbed his arms with her hands and lifted herself. Her breathing became normal and her eyes met his.
Sahara, "Abe?"
Abe, "Sahara."
He kissed her wildly. She was momentarily caught off guard, hesitant to return his bold gesture. However that only lasted a minute as she felt his emotions mix with hers as he allowed her to feel himself through his telepathy. The passion spilled out from them as the kiss grew more intense to then abruptly stop.
Sahara, "Abe I felt you in the dark. You said you loved me?"
He nodded, "Yes, and I am so sorry for making you wait like this. I hate myself for it."
She smiled and shook her head, "Don't."
They kissed again sweeter and more tame this time.
Hellboy and Liz were smiling from the door frame, exchanging a happy look.
Hellboy, "About time don't ya think?"
Johann looked on, face unable to be read but I will tell you that it wasn't the happiest but he, as gracious as he was, will act happy for the two. Besides, they make more sense together than she would with him, he thought.
Coming into the room Hellboy placed a hand roughly on the two lovebird's shoulders.
With a wicked grin he said, "Ok you two, get a room. It can wait."
Sahara, "Why?"
Hellboy, "So I can do this!"
He picked her up from her legs and slung her over his shoulder. She laughed in glee causing Liz to laugh along with her. Abe smiled, his eyes bright with happiness. All pain forgotten. Johann was telling Hellboy to put her down before he broke her bones, again. The laughter and joy filled the room ringing throughout the base they inhabited.
Ok guys well what can I say? This story is my most favorite and my best fanfic I have ever written so far! I am upset, highly upset that it is over but am glad that it is so you can all know what my true intent was. I thank you, from the bottom of my heart, to all who have read and reviewed this story as well as followed and favorited it. I will let you know that all hope isn't lost for I will be making a 'sequel' called "The Cat's PJs" where it will be a story filled with clips of romantic love scenes between Abe and Sahara. I can't just cop out on you guys and not give you any tender loving romantic moments between these two! And if and when the Hellboy 3 movie comes out I will continue this story and accommodate for the new movie to be added on. And I will also say that I will be making a romantic spinoff for Johann Krauss with a new OC who will be joining the bunch! I felt bad for him and he needs love don't you think? He's been through enough! I'm so glad that it is complete and so sad that I won't be writing it anymore. The years have been fun. Thank you again to all who stuck it out and waited out my laziness and delays for each new chapter. I hope I didn't disappoint and will satisfy you even further with my up and coming "sequel" of lovey dovey shorts between this dynamic pair. God Bless and hopefully I'll see you again soon! :D
