Sveta learns to become invisible and spooks Matthew for HarmonyBenderFreak!
Enjoy!
Matthew loves when they finally set up camp for the night and have eaten. It is one fo the few times the group can relax and not have to worry about monsters ambushing them, or the swirling black of the Eclipse that brought death to all under its shadow. No, in camp, with the fires lit, and everyone at ease and ready to rest, things were happy.
They were safe.
Mathew gasps as he feels a scratch against his neck, just enough to cause pain. He had been wandering absentmindedly again. What if he had walked beyond the protective enchantment of the camp's Sacred feather? He was easy prey right now. He rolled away in whatever direction his mind decided was best, quickly scanning the surroundings for a tell-tale sign of the attacker.
Nothing.
He was still within the camp, but just far enough away for no one to notice what was happening. Could a monster have gotten through the charm? His eyes darted again, finding the curtain of shadow that signified the lands covered by the Eclipse. Though he was close, they were nowhere near close enough to attract a shadow bea-
Schlick.
He gasps and rolls again, his sleeve having been cut, his arm undamaged though. Whatever this was, it was toying with him, playing with its food as it were. He narrowed his eyes, looking for anything that would give away the attacker.
Schlick.
Another tear. He shut his eyes, focusing on his Psynergy, trying to find the land where this beasts steps landed. He picked up on his friends behind him, a rabbit or squirrel to his left, but no-
Schlick.
This tear against his back was punctuated with a deep growl, one that taunted him, seemed to laugh at him. In the corner of his mind he thought he heard whispers, nothing he could make out, but it was enough to terrify him. His sense told him to retreat to camp, to call the others and get help, but his mind was foggy with thoughts and noises that just whispered constantly in the corner of his brain.
His heart jumped into his throat as his face was grabbed, his cheeks forced together by the strength of the grip against him. He tried to cry out or gasp, but nothing came. The grip tightened, and he cursed himself for being so stupid. Cursed himself for not being able to save the world and make his father proud. Cursed himself for never telling her how he-
His thoughts ended abruptly when a beautiful pair of very recognisable green eyes appeared. "Boo!" Sveta materialised before him in an instant, nearly making the blonde leader jump right out of his skin.
"Sveta!? What the hell!? I was scared to death!" He yelled, pushing her away sharply.
The girl frowned, walking back to him and taking his hand in hers, "I'm sorry… was just having a little fun. My Djinn told me I could turn invisible so I th-"
"So, you thought you'd give me a heart-attack?" He responded, his lungs finally refilling with the air he realised he was lacking.
"Sorry!" She said quickly, turning her face to the ground in her shame, "I-I didn't mean to really scare you. I just wanted to play…"
"Play?" Matthew was positively dumbfounded by her.
The beastgirl nodded sheepishly, "It's how Beastmen play. They scratch and 'hunt' each other. I'm sorry I just…"
Matthew exhaled slowly, seeing his friend was really sorry. He knew she hadn't meant anything by it of course. Sometimes he had to remind himself that she was different, had grown up in a vastly different culture to normal humans. He pulled her close and hugged her tight.
"It's okay… I'm sorry I reacted so harshly." He needed to remember that she wasn't perfectly aware of how to act around humans. Several times they had caught her lickeing the back of her hand to comb against her face, "It's okay."
The girl merely nodded into his chest, apologising again.
"Hey, why don't I teach you how humans play? We have a lot of games and I'm sure the others would like the chance to have fun for a while." He asked, still hugging the lavender girl to his chest.
A muffled reply of "I'd like that." came.
Before long, nearly the entire group were playing games, and learning new ones from each other.
And when Matthew saw the bright and joyous smile on Sveta's face, he couldn't help but want to play every day.
Initially, I was gonna do some shippy stuff, but decided against it and went for cute friendship stuff.
Well, I hope you liked it!
