Here we are, another week and another chapter. Perhaps this chapter is a bit different than my usual ones, but I still like it.
I do not own FMA.
Lydia and Scar held hands as they made their way through several backstreets and onto a busy road.
Scar ducked his head and pulled up his hood, his sunglasses already in place, and Lydia adjusted a shawl she'd snatched from a laundry line to cover her hair. Of course that had to be the day a soldier had meandered close enough to catch sight of Scar and Lydia. The party had been forced to split off into groups to evade capture.
The pair of them pretended to peruse market stalls while keeping an eye out for the military.
They stopped in front in front of a stall with several nice dresses that Lydia would have been interested in if they had the money to buy them or at least weren't trying to avoid get captured.
They were about to continue on their way when the person at the stall said, "Hello sir! I think that pretty wife of yours would look wonderful in a blue poplin."
Scar stopped short as Lydia blinked rapidly. She hadn't at all expected to called his wife. Her lips pulled into the best smile she could manage as she replied, "We look married? Thank you! We haven't had the chance yet, but I'm sure my fiancé is thankful like I am."
She waved cheerily as they hustled off before the happy looking merchant realized they hadn't bought anything.
The pair of them made their way down the street and were just able to get away as the military began their showing their photos around.
Lydia looked around warily as the pair of them moved down familiar paths. Finally, Scar announced, "We should be fine here." Lydia sighed in relief as some of her worry faded.
She turned to smile at Scar who stared at her with a contemplative expression on his face. Lydia raised an eyebrow as she asked, "Do you want to ask something?" Scar wasn't one to hold off on anything, so she was curious as to what the answer would be. "The merchant thought we were married." Lydia blinked in surprise, it was also usual for him to state the obvious. Scar glanced away as he continued, "I've never thought about marriage too much before."
Scar turned around seemingly embarrassed as he called, "We need to keep moving."
Lydia smiled at his awkward behavior and hurried to catch up with him. A sideways glance reveal his expression was serious like usual, if not more so. Lydia held back a laugh as Scar raised an eyebrow at her strange giddiness. The expression, however, lead to further giggles instead of less.
Once Lydia had managed to stop her laughter she said, "I'm sorry, I couldn't help myself." Scar grunted in response and Lydia added, "If it makes you feel better, I've never really thought getting married either."
Scar glanced over eyebrows raised slightly and Lydia asked, "Were you expecting a different answer?"
Scar continue to hold her gaze as he replied, "As a monk, marriage was something I never planned on. I intended to devote myself solely to my god and nothing else. I had thought the subject would be one you would thought more about."
Lydia glanced away and shrugged, "I suppose that makes sense." She admitted, "Most girl spend a lot of time thinking about marriage. But I never really did." She glanced down at her bare fingers as she continued, "I always thought of marriage as something people just did. You date, marry someone you like or maybe even love, have kids and grow old."
Her hands tightened into fists as she added, "Maybe if my parents marriage had been different, I would have a better view on the whole thing, but maybe not."
She relaxed her hands and glanced back up at Scar as she said, "So there you have it, my views on marriage."
Scar nodded as he commented, "It's sensible. You're less likely to be disappointed with realistic goals like those,"
A small chuckle passed through Lydia's lips as she said, "And yet here I am. Together in an unconventional relationship with one of the most dangerous people in Amestris, and I wouldn't change a single thing, not now or ever."
Scar nodded and Lydia couldn't help adding wistfully, "Maybe when everything is over we could find someone willing to conduct a ceremony."
Scar shrugged, "Perhaps if we found an Ishvalan settlement we'd find someone willing." Lydia smiled briefly before she said, "In any case, we need to find the rest of the group."
Scar nodded, and they hurried on their way.
I figured with Lydia's upbringing that she'd have a pretty practical view on marriage and Scar's seemed more or less obvious.
The next chapter will give us a view of a man we all love to hate. I'll let you guess who that is.
