Chapter 35

Sakura's POV

Everyone was frozen in shock. Eiji… Ayame's older brother?! My mind started spinning in a hundred different directions as I looked between the two of them. As I compared each of their features, I slowly started to see the similarities between the two of them. Their noses are the same shape… and their mouths too… The more I looked at the two of them, the more I saw the resemblance. Ayame took another cautious step towards Eiji, her whole body quivering.

"B-But… how…?" Her voice was barely audible. "You… I saw you…"

"I know…" Eiji looked down at the ground for a moment. "I'm sorry you had to see that…"

"Then… Then how are you-"

"It's complicated. But to put it simply, I didn't really die."

"W-What?!" Ayame's eyes widened in confusion and disbelief.

"A few hundred years ago, one of our ancestors married a powerful demon." Eiji looked back up at her, a light beginning to glimmer in his eyes. "That demon's blood still runs through our veins and I was able to survive the fall because of it." Eiji gently unsheathed Bakusaiga and held it out as he gently turned it, the silver metal shining as the light touched it. "…that power also gives me the ability to wield this sword…"

"Bakusaiga…?" Ayame looked down at the blade that had seemed to put Eiji in a trance.

"Yes…" Eiji replied in a smooth, hypnotized voice. "And it will be quite useful for what I intend to do."

"Wh-What…?" Ayame's voice cracked a bit as fear seemed to well up inside her and she seemed hesitant to ask her next question. "Eiji… What do you want Bakusaiga for…?" Eiji grinned slightly.

"…revenge…" He looked up at her, a spark of excitement and malice in his yellowish eyes. "Revenge on those who wronged me." I felt the blood drain from my face as he continued. "They all thought they were so high and mighty while they pushed me around… I want to show them what it was like. I want to see their faces when they experience the same pain, fear, and torment that they put me through…!"

I took a step back. He's insane… He's crazy…! Why would he… I looked over at Sesshomaru to see his response to all this. He remained still, and with a calm gaze he seemed to be sizing Eiji up as he waited for the events in front of him to play out.

"Ayame…" Eiji continued after a brief moment of silence. "Will you help me?"

"What…?" Ayame looked at him, fear and puzzlement mixing together.

"Help me take my revenge." Eiji held his hand out to Ayame. "Help me get payback for what was done to me. Your big brother." I looked between Eiji with Bakusaiga in his hand and Ayame whose head hung low. Her eyes were overcast and I couldn't tell what was going through her head. She remained still for a few seconds, and then slowly she took a step towards Eiji. Eiji smiled at her as she carefully walked up to him until she stood in front of him.

"Thank you Ayame…" Eiji said. "I know you'll be a big help to me."

"Yes Eiji…" Ayame's voice was low and barely audible. "I know that you went through some hard times, especially through high school…" Her hands shook and she clenched them into fists. "…but the Eiji I know would never want anyone to feel the way he did!" In a flash Ayame's fist came up and slammed into Eiji's jaw, knocking him over. In the same moment, she quickly grabbed Bakusaiga as Eiji lost his grip on it and glared at him with teary eyes threatening to bubble over as.

"WHO ARE YOU REALLY?!" She demanded. Suddenly, a dark aura settled on the area around us that made me feel like I was choking. A dark purple aura began to surround Eiji as he slowly began to get up. Ayame took a trembling step backwards as Eiji stood over her, a menacing glare in his eyes as he growled at her.

"Give. it. back…" Eiji demanded in a low voice. Ayame held Bakusaiga close to her chest and took another step back as she nervously shook her head.

"no…" She replied in a shaky voice.

"I SAID GIVE IT BACK YOU LITTLE BRAT!" Eiji snapped and lunged at Ayame with inhuman speed. I heard Masaru yell for her to watch out and my breath caught in my throat.

...

Sesshomaru's POV

I had waited long enough. As soon as I saw the imposter make his move, I sprang into action. It only took me a moment to catch up to them and put myself between Ayame and the enemy. I grabbed his wrist and stopped him in the middle of his attack and heard Ayame stumble backwards before she ran over to Masaru.

"UNHAND ME!" The fake Eiji demanded. His teeth were clenched like fangs as he growled menacingly at me.

"Drop this foolish act." I replied and tightened my grip on him. "There is no point in trying to maintain an appearance we all know to be a mere illusion."

"Heh… You've got a point there…" He said, a wicked grin forming on his lips. Suddenly, he balled up his free hand and swung at my face, forcing me to let go of him in order to dodge. He jumped backwards as did I and I watched has the flesh beneath his skin started to bubble. His skin became white and his hair turned a deep purple. His eyes glowed a fierce red as purple tattoos surrounding his eyes spread in all directions across his face, neck, and arms. His fingernails grew sharp as the thick purple stripe spread down to his hands and split at the ends to touch each of his knuckles. A pair of large moth wings completed the transformation as a demon stood before me.

"WH-WHAT IS HE SESSHOMARU?!" I heard Sakura shriek behind me.

"A demon." I answered, unfazed by my opponent's appearance. "He disguised himself as Ayame's dead brother in order to trick you."

"Sesshomaru…" The ugly moth in front of me growled my name and his smile spread wider. "I was hoping I would find you…"

"Me?" I watched him carefully as I took another step in front of Sakura and her friends.

"Yes…" The demon answered. "SO I COULD FINALLY HAVE MY REVENGE ON YOU!" He charged at me with surprising agility, but I reacted quickly and collided with him. I planned to use my poison claws to strike him down, but he somehow managed to block me. He quickly followed up with an attack of his own as he used his own claws to strike at my face. I side stepped to the left and tried to jab him in the abdomen, but he used the chance to slip away from me and run for Ayame.

"GIVE ME BAKUSAIGA YOU STUPID LITTLE GIRL!" He yelled as he charged after her. Just before he reached her though, I saw Ayame's quick thinking kick in.

"SAKURA! CATCH!" She yelled and threw Bakusaiga over to Sakura who clumsily caught it as the demon grabbed Ayame by the throat. The demon looked over just in time to see the catch as I came up behind him and struck him with my poison claws. The shock of the pain caused him to drop Ayame who scrambled away immediately. It did not take him long to recover though before he turn around and began a barrage of attacks on me. I immediately went onto the defensive and started evading his attacks, but I would not allow him to slip past me again. Slowly though, I found myself backing up one small step at a time as I tried to both attack my enemy and defend Sakura.

Why is this so difficult? He is not a particularly powerful demon, so I should have been able to dispose of him by now. I ducked under him as the demon swiped at my head when it dawned on me. Bakusaiga… My entire life Bakusaiga had resided inside of my body until it eventually manifested itself unto me as a sword. Ever since I had been separated from it I had gown considerable weaker. Bakusaiga was a part of me and if I wanted to end this battle quickly, then I would have to get it back.

"Sakura." I called out to her as I jabbed my opponent in the stomach. He managed to mostly block the attack, but it was enough to pierce him and throw him back a ways.

"Wh-What is it?!" She stammered and sounded as though she had come out of a trance.

"Give me Bakusaiga. I need it to defeat this demon."

"NO!" The demon screamed and spread out his wings. He jumped off the ground and began flying over my head in an attempt to get to Sakura. I turned to Sakura as well and ran as quickly as I could to reach her before she could be harmed. Sakura started running to me, but the enemy was closing in on her too quickly. This is bad… I cannot allow him to reach her first! I was but a few feet behind him as he dove down to grab her. Sakura stopped and looked up at him, eyes wide with terror as he let out a loud shout of rage a determination. I only had a moment to react.

I leapt into the air just high enough to reach him and used my poison claws to cut into his side. He yelled in pain and it caused him to lose focus long enough for me to land on the ground, grab Sakura, and jump to a safe distance. As I wrapped my arms around her, I felt a wave of power flow through me. I looked down at her to see if she was alright when I saw Bakusaiga was pressed in between us. Sakura looked up at me with wide, terrified eyes as she trembled in my arms.

"s-sesshomaru…" she whimpered in a weak voice.

"Go." I said in a quiet voice. "Get a safe distance away from here while I finish this fight." Sakura nodded once in understanding then released Bakusaiga from her grasp. As I picked up my familiar blade, it began to pulse and resonate with me. I could feel my former strength returning to me as Bakusaiga responded to the touch of its master. I watched Sakura carefully as she slipped past me and ran to the alleyway where her friends were. Ayame quickly pulled Sakura behind the wall then I turned my attention back to the demon.

He had already risen up, but had not made a move towards me. He was eyeing the sword in my hand warily as he tried to calculate his next move. His breaths were heavier now and I could tell that the effects of the injuries I had inflicted upon him had started to take their toll. His eyes, though still filled with rage, now had a cloud of fear lurking inside them. I adjusted my grip onto Bakusaiga as I held it out in front of me, the tip of it pointed at the now seemingly pathetic creature in front of me.

"It is time to end this fight." I ran after him, moving at three times the speed I had before and ready to attack. The demon instinctively tried to jump out of the way and avoid my blade, but his efforts were futile. Green electricity sprung from my sword as I swung and sliced my enemy in two. He let out a loud cry of pain as we were enveloped in a bright light and his body disintegrated into nothing. The light faded and all that remained was Bakusaiga's sheath on the ground.

The deed was done.

I looked down at my familiar sword, then reached down and picked up its sheath. Who was that demon? I wondered as I inserted the blade into the sheath. How did he know me? Why did he want to take Bakusaiga and kill me…? Could there be more like him? The more I thought about it, the more questions that arose. I wanted… I needed to find out who that demon was and what his motives had been.

"S-Sesshomaru…?" Sakura's faint voice pulled me from my thoughts and I turned to look at her. Her face had a mix of worry and fear painted onto it as she stared at me.

Sakura's POV

I took a small step towards Sesshomaru. After the blinding flash of light, the demon had disappeared and Sesshomaru retrieved Bakusaiga's sheath. He had been looking at Bakusaiga with a hard expression as though he was in deep thought when I saw it. A faint glow had begun to envelope him.

"S-Sesshomaru…?" He looked up at me as I slowly moved towards him. Something was happening. I could feel it. I scanned his body and saw that a light had begun to emanate from Bakusaiga and cover Sesshomaru. Sesshomaru looked down at his hands and his eyes widened slightly as he finally noticed the light as well.

Could this be… is he about to go back to his own time…? An overwhelming sense of fear and anxiety overwhelmed me as I realized it.

"No…" I took a larger step towards him. "No no no… Sesshomaru…!" The light began to glow brighter as I moved faster. "Sesshomaru…! Sesshomaru!" I had started sprinting as the light became brighter. No! Please! Don't let this be happening! Tears stung my eyes as I leapt forward in a last ditch effort to reach him. Time seemed to slow down as I reached out for him. All I could hear was the thumping of my heart and myself screaming out his name. "SESSHOMARUUUUUUUUUUUUU!" I watched as his face vanished in the light then I felt a sharp pain as I hit the concrete face first.

"Sakura!" I heard Ayame and Masaru's cries of panic and it took me a minute to realize that I had fallen on the ground. Beneath my body, Bakusaiga laid quietly.

"Sakura, are you ok?!" Ayame asked once she reached me. I slowly rose to a sitting position and gingerly picked up the sword Sesshomaru had so desperately been searching for. My hands were shaking, so I held it closer to me so as not to drop it when I started to notice the droplets of water that had been falling on my lap. My cheeks had started to grow wet as they were streaked with tears and my whole body shook as I began to sob out loud.

He was gone. I had lost Sesshomaru forever.

A/N: I finally did it... It took me so much longer than I thought it would, but I finally finished Ages! Thank you so much for all of you out there who supported me and tolerated my inconsistent updates! I hope you all thought it was worth it because it was to me!
