Disclaimer Oh how I wish I owned Twilight. But I don't. I think we know who does so enough said.

Note The only time I saw interrogations is on TV so I'm basing my knowledge of what I know off of that.

Chapter 35

Bella

You've got to be kidding.

"Jake this isn't funny," I said.

"It's not a joke," Jake said.

"Then why the hell say it now?" I asked.

"Come on Bells, don't you think it was easy to admit that?"

I let out a short breath as I started to head towards the door. I was stopped short when Jake took a hold of my wrist lightly.

"You know it's true," he said.

"If that's the case, then perfect fucking timing," I snapped, freeing my wrist from his grasp as I left the room.

As if I need this right now.

-LINE BREAK-

I went back to ignoring Jake after that meeting. I can't wrap around my mind that the fact that Jake of all people would have feelings for me.

What I don't understand is why say it now?

Why couldn't he say it then?

Was this all a poly to get my attention off of Edward?

Do I even like Edward?

All of these questions and I don't have the answer for every single one of them. And I thought working on this case was difficult enough.

I tried to concentrate on the paperwork in front of me but I couldn't.

I needed air.

"Hey Felix, can you let me know when the questioning is going to start? I need a breather," I asked.

"Sure," Felix said.

I nodded in thanks and I quietly slipped away from the room. I headed up the few flights of stairs and wounded up on the roof. I walked toward the ledge and sat down. This was my quiet spot I discovered a few years back. I don't remember exactly when I started coming up here but I knew that it was a good while after Charlie died.

I stared out at the skyline of Seattle and I felt like crying right there. Everything around me was starting to overwhelm me and I didn't know what to do.

Do I wish Charlie was still here?

Of course I do more than anything.

However, we can't change the past. As much as I want to, I know we can't. I need to trust myself and my team in order to get this case solved. We would do what it takes to make it happen.

With one last look at the scenery, I headed back inside with a renew sense of hope.

-LINE BREAK-

I stood on the other side of the viewing glass in one of the interrogation rooms with Marcus and Seth while Jake and Felix were on the other side waiting for the suspect to come in. I continued to stare at Jake and my mind flew back to our last encounter.

Even if we caught the guy after all of this, I don't know how our relationship will be. I just need to keep it professional until we leave work.

That is if we do leave today.

"You okay Bella? You seemed tense," Seth noted.

"I'm fine. Just anxious I guess," I replied.

He doesn't need to know. Just one less person.

"I know it's hard but we're here for you all and the same goes to Rose and your mother," Seth said while Marcus nodded in agreement.

The door on the other side openend effectively ending our conversation. When the person walked in, my eyes went wide in shock.

"James?" I said in a shocked tone.

"You know him?" Marcus asked in a wary tone.

"He was at Cullen's building when we found that woman," I replied. "I know I saw him a few times after but..."

"You don't suppose he might have some leads to this?" Seth asked.

"God only knows," I said.

"Look I'm pretty sure you gentlemen got better things to do than to question me," James said.

"Quiet you," Jake snapped. "We got a good tip off of you from a good source."

"Oh please do tell," Jame sneered. "I want my lawyer."

"Can I please..."

"No Jake that won't do you good," Felix replied. "Now James we can do this the easy way or the hard way."

"Fine, fine I'll cooperate. But one wrong move..."

"Yeah, yeah," James said. "What do you have for me?"

Jake and Felix looked at one another before Felix pulled out a couple files from behind his back. He placed them on the table and pulled out pictures of our victims. I know in one of them is Charlie for sure.

"Do you know any of them?" Felix asked.

"Hmm, I've seen them yes, know them? Nope," he replied.

We're getting somewhere at least. Forks is a small town after all.

"Okay then," Felix said. "Where were you thenight they were killed?"

"Either I was home or still stuck at the office," he replied. "Come detective, how can someone expect to remember where they were years ago?"

I couldn't help but notice how his answer was odd. I eyed over at Marcus and I couldn't read what his expression was playing on his face. Maybe he seemed to notice the same thing as I was?

I wasn't too sure myself.

"Although, maybe you should ask someone else who knows more than me," he replied sinisterly.

"What now?" Seth asked in a low tone.

"God help us all," Marcus said.

"Tell us then," Jake said in a clipped tone.

Then something happened that threw us all for in a loop that changed the entire course of the investigation. Especially me.

"Maybe you should ask Edward Cullen himself."

A/n I know. I'm horrible for updating so late. Blame the semester. I'm glad it's over. And I know it's short but it's something for now at least.

Now since I'm off from school. I do hope to update more and finish this story. That's my goal for the upcoming year.

Loved your responses for the last chapter! Couldn't help but grin at those and I know I had to make it Twilight cliche but I couldn't help it =D. I also love hearing your guesses and theories. All will be revealed soon I can't give it away now can I?

Thank you all for your patience and support. Things are about to get a bit chaotic up in here.

Until next time,
Spike
