All were gathered in Leesburg, Virginia at the Lansdowne Resort. The venue was a mere forty-five minutes from the hustle and bustle of Washington, DC, yet felt worlds away. The weekend had gone on without a hitch or snag. The boys had enjoyed golf while the girls enjoyed time in the spa. The rehearsal dinner had relieved prewedding tension, and the rehearsal ceremony had no one doubting where he or she would be standing. By the end of Friday night, Tony hated to not have Elizabeth in his room, but she retired to her sister's room.
Katie crossed the room and gingerly sat next to her sister on the bed. "Last night of us sharing a room with you as an umarried woman."
"It's weird. Isn't it?"
"Weird would be us getting married to twin brothers and wearing matching wedding dresses. That would be weird."
Lizzie laughed and tucked her hair behind her ears. She wondered if Tony was okay considering his father hadn't arrived yet, and she wasn't sure if he would. She'd met the elder DiNozzo a handful of times. He had been sent a wedding invitation but never responded.
Katie nudged her sister's knee, breaking her out of her thoughts. "I can't believe you're getting married tomorrow. I can't believe you landed an amazing job right after school, and I can't believe I'm just as excited as if it were all happening to me. I'm proud of you, Lizzie."
Elizabeth blinked back the tears as she threw her arms around her sister. It felt good to finally hear Katie's approval about her graphic design position at the Central Intelligence Agency. She had sensed her sister's jealousy when she'd announced the employment. Her mother had been ecstatic while her father had grumbled dismal approval. Of course, Jethro wasn't fond of the sister agency. Katie slipped out of the embrace and wiped her eyes. Her sister handed her an envelope. She opened it, raising an eyebrow. She stared at the drawn infinity symbol with love in one of the loops.
"What is this?"
"What we're doing when I get back."
Katie's mouth fell open. "Don't even joke, Lizzie."
"I researched and scheduled the appointment," she told her with a wide grin. "I was thinking you could write love for my tattoo and vice versa."
The sisters were finally going to get the matching tattoos they had talked about since turning eighteen. The two had continually argued over what the matching tattoos should be. Katie and Elizabeth stayed up talking until falling asleep.
The next morning, there was a certain domineering seventy something redhead overseeing the decorating of the resort's Potomac Terrace. Helen Shepard wanted her granddaughter's special day to be perfect. It seemed as if the June weather would be comfortable for the outdoor ceremony. When Helen was satisfied with the results, she left to get ready for the ceremony and to give her granddaughter the something borrowed, a Cartier art deco diamond bracelet manufactured in 1940 and owned by her mother. She knew the day would rush by until time for the ceremony, and it did.
Jethro stood inside the air conditioning and glanced at his watch. The ushers were seating the guests. He was patiently waiting to play his part in the day. Gibbs had avoided his wife for most of the day. Jenny was a rollercoaster of emotions. She was brimming with joy or flooding the room with tears at the drop of a hat. He had stuffed plenty of tissues into the pocket of his suit; he knew the waterworks would come during the ceremony. Jethro took a deep breath and paced.
DiNozzo along with the bridesmaids and groomsmen entered.
"Hey boss."
"Nervous, Tony?" Gibbs asked.
He shook his head; he wasn't suffering from cold feet. "I'm ready."
Jethro nodded his head in approval. He knew how many times the couple had considered eloping throughout the wedding planning.
"You brought your sniper rifle for no reason," McGee chimed in.
Tony's eyes widened, and he made a strangled noise. "Wha—sniper rif—BOSS!"
Katie arrived out of nowhere with a huff. She punched McGee in the shoulder before calmly grabbing her future brother-in-law by the shoulders. She sharply looked him in the eye. "They're messing with you."
Tony head slapped his best man and adjusted his suit while McGee glared. "Where did you come from?" he asked Katharine.
"She sent me out early to check on you, doofus," Katie replied, jerking McGee over to her. "You two can kill each other after the nuptials," she said in a quiet reprimand. McGee fixed his glare on the redhead next to him. Katharine rolled her eyes. "Your Gibbs glare needs work," she informed him.
McGee shook his head. "You're too mean to be in such a pretty dress."
"I know," Katie answered with a laugh. Her sister had chosen beautiful wine colored floor length chiffon dresses with a delicately beaded lace bodice. She was glad the one shoulder dress covered her bruise from fight practice with Ziva. She motioned for Allison and Palmer to get together. Kristin was paired with Tony's fraternity brother, Steve.
"Get out there," Katie ordered Tony before leaving to attend to the bride.
Jethro chuckled. Katie was reminding him of Jenny and her director mode. He looked up when he heard voices, smiling at Ducky with Helen on his arm. The medical examiner waved at him as Helen excused herself. Gibbs smiled when he heard his father's laughter.
"Hey dad," he spoke to Jackson Gibbs. "Where'd you get that good lookin' woman?"
Jackson looked at his daughter-in-law on his arm as she blushed. Jethro's eyes were still wandering up Jenny's body. He was a fan of any garment that hugged her curves. "Finders keepers, Leroy," Papa Gibbs said with a wink.
Jenny shook her head as she laughed. She walked over to her husband and straightened his tie. "Jethro," she whispered. "Are you going to be able to let her go at the end of the aisle?"
"Yeah," he answered slowly. Honestly, he hadn't thought much about it.
His wife stared at him and finally nodded her head. She had the sense to know Jethro would become emotional when he set eyes on Elizabeth. Jenny had to have her make-up redone three times earlier. His wife squeezed his hand and left to take her seat.
The bridesmaids and groomsmen paired up and waited for the walk onto the terrace. Katie directed the guys and girls. She winked at Elizabeth as she managed to sneak up behind her father. Jethro heard a throat clear behind him.
He turned and smiled when he saw Elizabeth. His daughter was stunning. He had no idea what Jenny had been talking about when she mentioned the dress being lace and tulle but seeing his little girl in it took his breath away. When did his little Lizzie become a woman? For the first time, he was seeing her as a woman and not a little girl with pigtails, and he didn't know how to handle it. What happened to the days of ballet lessons, scraped knees, horseback riding, and fairytales? He remembered. Those days had turned into freaking out over test scores, high school crushes, and college applications. Now, she was standing in front of him about to be a married woman. He swallowed hard and cleared his throat.
Elizabeth looked down at her dress, wondering if her father approved. The ivory gown had a scalloped, illusion v-neckline and a cap-sleeve bodice. The finishing details were a keyhole back and a grosgrain ribbon belt with a beaded brooch. The Swarovski crystals on the brooch subtly glinted in the light. Her brilliant red hair was put up with a few curls around her face. Her eyes met his, and she understood his silence.
"Daddy," she spoke softly and took his offered arm. "Are you going to be able to let me go?"
"No," he answered hoarsely. He didn't know if he could do it even if he knew he would be placing her into Tony's devoted hands. She was still his little girl.
She turned her head and kissed her father on the cheek. "You're the first man I ever loved. Nothing will ever change that. I love you," Lizzie finished as the processional music began.
With a smile on his face, Jethro walked his little girl down the aisle and gave her away. He noticed how Tony's eyes hadn't left Elizabeth. He smiled from ear to ear and knew how lucky he was to have her. Years ago, the thought of marriage terrified him, but he had found the one. In hindsight, the day he met her he knew he would never be happy without Lizzie. He thanked Gibbs and took a hold of her hand after Katie took the bouquet from her sister.
The officiate spoke, and the vows were said. When Lizzie began tearing up during the vows, Jethro felt his wife's hand searching for the tissues in his pocket. He fished one out of his pocket and handed it to Jenny, squeezing her free hand. He had to give her more tissues when Tony and Lizzie kissed.
As the newly wedded couple walked back down the aisle, Jethro had no more tissues. "I'm out," he whispered to his happy, crying wife.
Ducky presented a handkerchief to her, and she thanked him.
"She's in good hands, my dear."
"I know, but I can still cry," Jenny said to Ducky and elbowed her husband in his ribs when he chuckled.
"C'mon, Jen," Gibbs coaxed, leading her inside when it was time. He wanted to get out of the monkey suit, but he knew there would be tons of photographs taken. While everyone enjoyed cocktail hour, the family and wedding party were taking photographs. They were set free for the photographer to take photos of just Tony and Elizabeth. The photos were easy since they used the same photographer for their engagement shots.
After 1800, Tony and Elizabeth were waiting to be announced. Tony had requested a certain song to be played for them. He took his wife's hand and kissed it softly. Lizzie smiled at him and tugged him closer to her, kissing him. "Love you."
"Love you too, Mrs. Elizabeth DiNozzo," he whispered, smiling as the music to Me & Mrs. You began playing as the couple was announced. Tony was reminded of the day the elevator doors opened at NCIS, and there she was. He hadn't been able to get her out of his head for a week. Now, the girl that had haunted him a few years ago was his wife, and she still wore Ralph Lauren's Romance. She had taught him how to truly love and not be afraid of love. He had grown with her, and she had grown with him. Elizabeth's love had matured him.
The food was wonderful, and the toasts were funny and heartwarming from Katie and McGee. Katie's toast hadn't left a dry eye in the room, but McGee's speech had given them plenty of laughs. During Tim's toast, Elizabeth leaned over to her husband. "Your father's here."
Tony's mouth fell open. He wasn't expecting him to show. Tony met eyes with the older DiNozzo and gave him a nod. He looked at Lizzie. "At least, he's here."
She nodded her head and kissed his cheek. Lizzie had tried to help mend Tony's broken relationship with his father, but she realized her father was more of a father to Tony. Her eyes widened when he sat at the table with her grandmother. "Oh no," she grumbled.
Tony smirked. It amazed him how his father could smell the money on women, but he knew Helen wouldn't fall for the DiNozzo charms. "What are you worried about? She'll shoot him down."
Lizzie shook her head and decided not to worry. It was her wedding day. All day she had felt like a princess. Soon, they were dancing their first dance and enjoying the evening. She rested her head on Tony's chest as they swayed to At Last.
"Hey," he whispered. "What are you and Gibbs dancing to?"
She shrugged her shoulders and swiped her bangs away from her eyes. "No idea. He wouldn't even tell mom." Elizabeth had allowed her father to choose the song for their dance. Her curiosity was nearly killing her.
He chuckled and rested his hand on the small of her back. "Allison looks cozy with Palmer."
Lizzie smirked. "She plans on making out with him in the photo booth."
"What?"
"You heard me," she remarked and cupped the back of his neck.
"One of your best friends wants to slide to second with the autopsy gremlin?"
"Don't call him that." She hit his chest playfully, giggling. "You know, he's actually kind of cute."
"Hey! Woman," he squawked, looking down at her while she giggled louder.
"Kidding." Lizzie kissed him as the song ended.
All the guests mingled, danced, and drank. Jackson had danced with the bridesmaids and his granddaughters. He had traded stories about his son with Ducky. Lizzie dragged Tony to nearly every table to visit with the guests. He noticed his father hitting on Ziva. The Israeli looked like she was moments from threatening his life. The cake was cut and served. The DiNozzos thanked everyone for coming and sharing their special day.
The DJ announced the father and daughter dance. Lizzie looked at her mother. Jenny shrugged her shoulders. Jethro still hadn't told her what song he'd chosen. Her eyes started to water when she heard the familiar guitar strings. Elizabeth went into her father's arms and smiled at him.
"Good choice?" he asked, placing his arm around her waist.
She nodded her head and softly sang along. "You belong among the wildflowers. You belong in a boat out at sea…I love you, daddy."
"I love you too, Lizzie," he responded, smiling as she rested her head on his shoulder. They moved around the dance floor while Tony and Jenny watched them.
"Tom Petty?" Tony asked, curious. Abby was next to him and blew her nose. She was crying at the sweetness of the moment. He shook his head at her. She hit him in the shoulder. "It's sweet! Super sweet! It even mentions a boat! It's so Gibbs!"
"It's what they'd listen to when Lizzie helped him with woodworking," Jenny told her son-in-law. "Wildflowers is her favorite Tom Petty song." She stole a tissue from Abby and dabbed at her eyes, thinking of Elizabeth and Jasper singing along to Jethro's Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers records while happily sanding away.
Tony listened and continued watching them. Just when he thought he knew his father-in-law, he'd learn something new, and it would surprise him. As tough as Gibbs was, he was definitely an old softy when it came to his girls. Later on, Tony discovered Gibbs and Jenny's song was These Arms of Mine by Otis Redding.
Katie's eyes widened, and she leaned over Tony to whisper to her sister. "Mom's drunk."
"Uh huh," Lizzie murmured and sipped her champagne, watching her father whisper into her mother's ear. Jenny laughed and put an arm around her husband's neck, stroking the back of his head.
Tony looked between the sisters. "How do you two know? She doesn't look drunk to me."
Katie gave her brother-in-law a look. "How long have you known my parents?" she asked, chuckling. "She's drunk because she's letting daddy well…look at where his hands are…on her ass. She doesn't care."
DiNozzo realized she had a point. Twenty of the wedding guests were from an array of agency alphabet soup, but most of them had left. He shrugged his shoulders. "Jenny's a flesh and blood woman."
"A liquored up flesh and blood woman," Lizzie said with a laugh. She cuddled into her husband's chest and loosened his tie with a content sigh, watching her parents.
Jenny rested her head on her husband's shoulder. "Remember the first time we danced to this?"
"Uh huh," Jethro murmured. "That hole in the wall bar. You were overdressed."
She smirked. "I recall you made reservations for that night, and you wouldn't let me change." She had been madder than a wet hen when he hadn't taken her to a fancy restaurant like she'd been expecting.
"I had to reserve the best table in the place," he answered with a laugh and slid his other hand slowly down her back. "Jen, I woulda been a damn fool to let you change out of that red dress that night."
Jen grinned as she remembered that the bar had only five tables. She lifted her head and kissed him. "Jethro," she said breathily. "You know what made me decide to let you into my bed that night."
A gray eyebrow rose with curiosity. "What?" he asked, pressing his lips against her temple.
"The way you walked to the jukebox."
Jethro looked down and shook his head with a laugh. "Jen, there's no jukebox in here. How am I gonna get you into bed tonight?"
"You can ask nicely," she told him with a wink. Her green eyes sparkled as she trailed a finger along his jaw.
"I could handle that," he replied, placing his hand on her upper back and lowering Jenny backward. He put his lips over hers in a kiss as he supported her in the dip as the song finished.
Off the dance floor, Katie was beginning to feel boredom set in. She surveyed the room and grinned slyly, leaving her seat. She snatched McGee by his tie and jerked him up. "C'mon, Tim."
"Where are we going?"
"Photo booth. It'll be fun!"
Tony laughed at the deer caught in headlights look on his best man's face. It was safe to say that Timothy McGee was terrified of Katharine Gibbs. She was intimidating, not easy to read, and way too much like her father in some respects. He wasn't sure if he was frightened of her because she was a Gibbs or if she was honestly that terrifying of a female. McGee dutifully followed the redhead to the photo booth. He didn't want to think what would happen if he didn't go with Katie.
Helen came to stand in front of the young couple and smiled at them. "It was a perfect day for the two of you. I'm so grateful to have shared it with you."
"Thank you, grandma," Lizzie said as Helen sat down.
"I wanted to give you your wedding gift before tomorrow. I know it will be a rush."
The family was having a farewell breakfast then the newlyweds were leaving for the airport to catch their flight. Tony and Lizzie had decided to honeymoon on the Greek island of Santorini.
Helen handed over an envelope and placed it on the table between them. "I have conditions before you open it," she reported and caught Tony's eye roll. "I saw that, Anthony. You cannot give the gift back under any circumstances. You musn't argue over my choice of gift. You should thank me and hug me after the shock has faded. Now, open the envelope."
Lizzie looked at her husband before lifting the envelope from the table. She opened it with her nail, and a key fell out of the envelope. "A key?" she asked, puzzled.
"Yes. To your home in Arlington."
Tony's mouth fell open as Lizzie stared at the woman in front of them. Her grandmother had purchased them a home in Virginia. "Grandmother, this is…this is…"
"Perfect," Helen finished. She retrieved the envelope from her granddaughter's hand and removed the piece of paper with the address.
"I think Liz was going to say too much," Tony spoke up.
Helen held up her index finger and pointed at him. "No. What were my conditions? No arguing over the gift. Where are my shows of appreciation?" she asked, cocking an eyebrow and daring them to defy her.
Elizabeth sighed, knowing it was pointless to argue. She got up and hugged her grandmother. "Thank you."
She watched Tony hug her grandmother and thank her for the gift. The newlywed shook her head. She should have known Helen would give them a lavish wedding gift.
"You'll love it. It's a beautiful home. I have exceptional taste. The neighborhood is lovely. It's on a quiet street. Oh, there are wonderful private schools in the area," Helen finished with a wink. "By the time, the two of you return from Greece, you'll be moved in."
"What?" Tony inquired, exasperated.
Helen turned and faced him. "I've arranged it all. Nothing to worry about." She patted him on the cheek. "Goodnight," she said, kissing them on the cheek and leaving the reception.
"She bought us a house?"
Lizzie put her hand up. "Don't. It will do absolutely no good. You won't talk her out of it."
"Why did she mention that about private schools?"
Elizabeth laughed at her husband and rubbed his thigh. "That was her not so subtle hint that she wants great grandchildren."
"Oh. OH," Tony spoke with realization. He felt Elizabeth's hand in his, and he turned his head to look at her.
"Honey, I don't plan on making you a father anytime soon. I'm not ready to be a mother. I want us to enjoy us first."
Tony squeezed her hand, relieved. He hadn't thought about the grandchildren or great grandchildren expectations. Maybe he could wrap his mind around having kids after a few years of marriage. "Liz, you'd want to have kids with me?"
"I would, Tony…when we're both ready," she finished with a smile, waving to Allison as she approached.
"I'll let you girls talk." Tony kissed Liz's forehead and went to the bar, ordering a bourbon. Jackson came up beside him. "I see you learned how to drink bourbon."
"I did," he answered, snickering.
Jackson gave him a look of approval. "My gift won't be as grand as Helen's," he told Tony as he ordered the same drink. "I only have advice for a long marriage. It's what I told Leroy if he listened. Maybe he did or maybe Jenny's just too damn good for him."
The younger man laughed. He took the two tumblers of bourbon from the bartender and gave one to Jackson. Tony was interested in what the man had to say.
He took the drink and took a sip. "It won't be perfect. There's no such thing. Be her best friend. Don't stop dating her. Say what's on your mind. Respect her. Son, love isn't spelled L-O-V-E; it's spelled G-I-V-E. A woman is a reflection of her man," Jackson finished and patted Tony on the back.
"Thank you," he told him. Jackson hugged him and looked him in the eye.
"Don't ever forget what I told you."
Jackson walked away to say his goodbyes for the night. The rest of the night was rounded out with the bouquet and garter toss. Lizzie was at her parent's table during the last dance. She had her feet propped up in a chair and was lying back against her husband.
Gibbs watched the dance floor as he rubbed his wife's feet. Jenny had placed her bare feet in his lap five minutes ago and roughly shoved her toes into his inner thigh until he'd gotten the foot massage hint. He had an amused grin on his face.
Jenny finished her drink and looked at him. "What are you grinning like a jackass for, Jethro?"
"Tim's got lipstick on his collar," he explained, pointing and glaring when Jenny slapped his hand down.
"For God's sake, Jethro! Don't point!"
Jenny's eyes zoned in on McGee's collar after she reprimanded her husband like he was a two year old. Timothy was dancing with Katie. Jen's eyes widened in alarm, and she cleared her throat. "The lipstick is your daughter's."
Gibbs groaned in frustration and pushed Jenny's feet out of his lap. Why did his daughters go after his agents? He should have known. Katie had ordered McGee around all day, and he'd followed her around like a puppy. Either McGee was terrified of her or he had a crush on Katharine. He grumbled under his breath and slammed his drink down.
DiNozzo laughed like a hyena when he observed that the lipstick on McGee's collar matched the hue of Katharine's lips. "I guess McGee will be McLucky tonight."
Lizzie rolled her eyes and flicked her wrist. Her hand collided with her father's hand as they both whacked Tony on the back of his head. Her husband grinned at her. "Not even married for twenty-four hours, and you're head slapping me. That's love."
Jethro put a hand over his face, shaking his head. After a few minutes of shaking his head, he laughed and pulled his wife over onto his lap. He rested his chin in the crook of her neck. "Heard what your mother did, Jen?"
"Shut up," she instructed and pinched his arm.
Katie returned to the table and sat down with McGee. She took what remained of her father's drink and downed it. He raised an eyebrow at her.
"What?"
"Nothin'."
She rolled her eyes and watched Fornell walk towards the table. He sat down and congratulated Tony and Lizzie before making small talk with the rest of the table.
"Hey, Katie. What are you planning on doing after law school?"
"Take the bar," she said curtly.
Jenny laughed loudly. Tobias shook his head. "Just like a Gibbs."
"Tobias, I'd be careful. You're surrounded," Gibbs told his friend. "We know how your luck is with redheads."
Fornell muttered incoherently into his drink. Katie fell silent. She planned on taking the bar examination, but she wasn't sure if she wanted to practice law. Lately, she'd been toying with the idea of becoming a federal agent. Her sister's wedding day wasn't the appropriate time to give her father a heart attack. She didn't know what she wanted to do, and she'd surprised herself with the realization that perhaps she wanted a NCIS career like her mother's. Maybe she'd practice law for several years and get the special agent itch out of her system.
The family chatted and rested their feet until the reception died down around 2300. Of course, some weren't ready for the party to end and were going to a local bar to continue the festivities. The guests were armed with sparklers instead of rice as Tony and Lizzie exited the building. The newlyweds headed to their suite to begin their first night as a married couple.
The next morning, the family said there goodbyes at breakfast and watched the couple leave for their honeymoon. After honeymooning in Santorini, the two would return to Virginia and begin their life together. Tony and Elizabeth were excited for the future and ready for whatever life would throw at them. During their relationship, they had learned that they were stronger together than apart.
