Chapter 36

When Deeks woke up, there were two nurses in his room: one adjusting something on one of the machines next to his bed while the other looked over a clipboard. His head was pounding and his whole body was sore, but he didn't feel majorly injured. The shaggy man blinked owlishly and looked around the room, searching for his family.

Suddenly one of the nurses noticed he was awake. "Oh, Mr. Deeks! Glad to see you're awake! Though, I'm sure the many people you've had waiting on you will be even more glad." One of them smiled.

Deeks tried to sit up a bit and clear his head, which still felt a bit fuzzy. "My son, he's okay right? Where is he? Can I see him? Oh, my fianceé as well, where's Kensi? Oh man she's gonna be pissed. Can you please go get her for me?" He asked, rapid fire.

The other nurse smiled. "Yes, he's fine. And I'll let your family know you're awake, sir."

The nurse checking his vitals looked up nervously. "Wendy, why don't you go make that call while I finish checking his vitals?" She said.

Deeks arched an eyebrow. He could tell this woman was acting off, and something was going on. "Is something wrong? What call?"

"Oh, it's just something I have to take care of sir. Don't worry. And Debbie I will get right on that. Oh, and we'll have to tell Doctor Bryant that he's awake." Wendy explained.

"Yes, I'll finish up here and see if I can find him." Debbie nodded.

"Can you go get my fianceé? She's the most beautiful dark haired woman you've ever laid eyes on. She's gonna be worried out of her mind, and it'll be easy to see on her face. She stands out in a crowded room, she's so beautiful." Deeks said softly.

The nurses both smiled adoringly. "Aww." Wendy cooed.

"This woman sure is lucky to have a man like you, honey." Debbie smiled, shaking her head.

Deeks grinned, wincing a bit at the pounding in his head. "Ah, but that's where you're wrong, Deb. See, I'm the lucky one. I've got her." He told them.

"I've never heard a man say such sweet things about his lady before." Debbie smiled.

"Maybe because they've never had Kensi to say those things about. Now can one of you go get her? Please? She'll make my head feel all better." He pouted.

Both women laughed. "I will go make that call and then I promise Mr. Deeks I will go find her." Wendy smiled, before turning and walking out.

"So when can Kensi take me home? Because, Debbie, while I very much enjoy your company, I am more than ready to get out of here." Deeks said.

Debbie snorted. "You do realize you've been awake but a few minutes, right?"

"Yeah, no, but still. Hey what time is it, anyway?" He inquired.

"It's almost ten o'clock, sir." The nurse replied.

"Oh wow, I've been out all day. That sucks. Oh gosh, Kens probably got interuptted in her shopping. She was looking for a wedding dress. She's going to be the most gorgeous bride." Deeks grinned. "And she's gonna be my bride. That's so awesome, part of me still can't believe she said yes."

"Do you always talk this much?" Debbie smiled.

Deeks laughed. "Yes. And you're not the first person to ask me that."

"I'm not surprised."

The man sat quietly for a few minutes. He soon got restless though, and turned his head to look at Debbie. Deeks hissed a bit in pain, he'd turned to fast. "Ow." He mumbled.

"How about I get you some pain medication? That sound good?" Debbie asked.

"No, I don't need any pain medicine, I just need my Lady Bird." Deeks whined.

The nurse chuckled lightly. "I'm sure the medicine wouldn't hurt."

"But I don't want it, I just want-" suddenly the door opened and interrupted Deeks.

"Mr. Deeks? Look who I found." Wendy annouced.

Deeks's head snapped towards the the door and he immediately beamed. "Fern, baby! There you are."

Kensi smiled at him, making his heart tug. He loved her smile, she had such a beautiful smile. He could see her eyes shining with tears and guilt suddenly flooded him; she probably had been worried sick about him. "Don't be mad, I swear this wasn't my fault Kensi." Deeks told her apologetically.

"Mr. Deeks call us if you need anything." Debbie said, before they left.

Kensi snorted. "I'mnot mad. How could I be mad that you got hurt?" she asked, walking over to his bedside.

He turned to look at her. "Is Leo okay? I tried to stay awake long enough to stay with him until the ambulance got there." He said worriedly.

The crash was a bit fuzzy in his memory, but Deeks could recall trying to calm Leo and stay awake with him. He'd been so afraid that he would pass out and Leo would be so scared all alone.

"Um... he's... he's fine." She said quickly.

Deeks's eyebrow rose, and for the first time he noticed that he had a butterfly bandage there. It wasn't hard to figure out something was wrong with Kensi; she seemed anxious, on edge. She shifted her feet and rubbed her hands together, both signaling her distress.

"What's the matter? Where is Leo? Nell got him?" Deeks inquired carefully.

"Um, actually no. Please don't hate me..." Kensi whispered.

Deeks's face scrunched up in concern and his heart dropped; the vulnerable look on her face tore at his heart. Hate her? How could he possibly ever hate her? Didn't she know how much he adored her? "Kens, what's going on? You're freaking me out."

Kensi sniffled. "Leo doesn't have a legal guardian..." she said quietly.

A swarm of technical laws from his lawyer days flooded Deeks's mind. He closed his eyes and sighed, sitting up.

Kensi saw the look on his face and rushed to explain. She had to make him understand. "I... I tried to explain how I'm your fianceé and that Leo's as good as mine. The social worker... she wouldn't... she didn't listen though, Deeks. I tried to reason with her but-"

Kensi was suddenly wrapped in Deeks's embrace, his arms wrapped around her tightly. The tears she'd been fighting to keep at bay immediately fell. "I'm so sorry, Deeks." She whispered into his neck.

"No, Kensi, I'm sorry. I should have appointed a guardian for Leo, I just never thought about it. You'd think with our jobs, and especially with me being a lawyer that I would've thought of it. I'm so sorry you had to go through that. This is my fault." Deeks told her vehemently.

Relief washed over Kensi, and she immediately relaxed into his hold. "So you're not mad?" she asked quietly.

Deeks chuckled a bit and pressed a kiss to the side of her head. "Kens, how could I be mad at you for something I caused?" He asked rhetorically.

"Oh thank God. I was so worried." Kensi breathed out.

Deeks pulled back and cupped her face gently in his hands. He rubbed both thumbs across her cheeks, wiping away the tears. "I could never hate you, Kensi Blye. I love you with all my heart, and nothing is going to change that." Deeks told her softly, before pressing a soft kiss to her lips.

"Good." Kensi whispered as she pulled away.

Deeks chuckled softly, when the door opened and Wendy came back in. "I called the social worker that was here earlier and she's bring some paperwork up here for you to sign, Mr. Deeks. You can assign a guardian. She's also bringing your son." She smiled.

Kensi grinned and her heart finally rose back up from her stomach, where it'd been since Leo had been taken from her. "Oh thank God."

Deeks smiled. "Thank you, Wendy. So that was the call you had to make, huh?"

"Yes." She nodded. "Doctor Bryant will be in shortly, and I'll let the receptionist know to allow Ms. Wright back here if that's alright with you?"

"That is more than alright, thank you." Deeks replied.

Wendy smiled again, before once more taking her leave. Kensi melted into Deeks's embrace, completely relieved. "He wasn't even gone a whole day, that's good."

"He'll be fine." Deeks told her reassuringly.

The doctor came in shortly after, telling Deeks he could go home first thing in the morning; he was being kept for monitoring, but the doctor assured him that he'd be just fine.

"Can I go home yet?" Deeks asked for the hundredth time.

Kensi snorted and shook her head. "Deeks, once again, no. You have to stay until morning. Then I can take you home." She explained slowly.

The shaggy man shot her a grin. "Ooh, I like the sound of that, Fern."

She laughed lightly, but stopped when there was another knock on the door. Kensi immediately sat up and smiled when she saw Hayley walk in, Leo right behind her.

"Leo!" Kensi grinned, relieved.

"Hi Mommy!" The little boy exclaimed, running over to her. Kensi lifted him into her lap and hugged him close. She was so happy he was back in her arms. "Daddy, is you better-er now?" Leo inquired.

"Yeah buddy, I'm better now. I get to go home soon." Deeks smiled, reaching his hand out to his son for a high five. Leo excitedly slapped his hand to his father's.

"Dat's good, Daddy!" The boy grinned.

The social worker smiled happily. "Mr. Deeks, I'm very glad you're alright. My name is Hayley Wright, I'm the social worker the hospital called."

Deeks sat up, nodding. "Uh, yeah I heard you had to come down here. Hi, it's nice to meet you." He said polietly.

"Funny, I don't really get that a lot." Hayley smiled slightly.

"Wonder why." Kensi said under her breath.

Deeks shot her a look telling her he'd heard, and was highly amused. "So, do I need to sign something saying Kensi can be Leo's guardian?" He asked, eager to be left alone with his family.

The woman nodded, pulling some papers out of the briefcase at her side. She also pulled out a pen and handed them to Deeks. "I'm sorry that this had to occur, Mr. Deeks. I promise Leo was in good hands the entire time."

"We had fun! They got me some chicky-nuggets. There were lots of kids there too. We played with some toys, but my toys is better. Dey didn't habe any Batman toys." Leo explained to his parents.

Kensi lovingly smoothed Leo's hair from his eyes, noting to herself that he needed a haircut. "I'm glad you had fun." She told him quietly.

"Not as much fun as I habe wiff you and Daddy and dah team, dough." Leo told her seriously.

Kensi laughed at that. "Of course not!"

"Here you go, all signed." Deeks smiled, handing over the paperwork.

"I will get this turned in, but Ms. Blye can go ahead and take him. I'm sorry about all of this, Ms. Blye. I hope there aren't any hard feelings." Hayley said sincerely.

Kensi arched an eyebrow. "Kens.." Deeks said quietly.

The woman blew out a breath. "No, I suppose there are no hard feelings between you and I." Kensi said slowly.

Hayley didn't look like she believed the woman, but nodded nonetheless. "Well I suppose I will take my leave now. Goodbye." She told them, quickly exiting the room.

Deeks burst out laughing. "She probably thought you were gonna slug her."

Kensi smiled. "Oh trust me, I thought about it. Many times." She said, holding Leo closer.

"Slug her? Wiff a slug? Like a bug? They're gwoss dough, Mommy." Leo said, confused.

The adults laughed. "You are so right, little man." Deeks smiled. "Can I get a hug now? I missed you." He asked.

Leo nodded and Kensi carefully lifted the boy onto the bed. Leo snuggled up to his dad and laid his head on Deeks's chest. "I missed-ed you too, Daddy." He said softly.

Deeks smiled and wrapped an arm around him, ruffling his hair. Kensi smiled as she looked at her two boys; they were her entire world now and she wouldn't have it any other way.

The man caught her gaze and grinned. "Room for one more, Kens." Deeks told her.

"No, Deeks I'm fine." Kensi shook her head.

"Come on, Fern! I'm injured, I need you to come love on me and help me feel better." He winked at her.

"Pwease Mommy!" Leo pouted.

"Ooh, try sayin' no now." Deeks grinned, hitting Kensi with his puppy eyes.

"Oh gosh." Kensi shook her head, carefully moving onto the bed. She couldn't resit the both of them giving her those adorable eyes.

Deeks grinned triumphantly as he moved Leo over so Kensi could lie on the other side of the boy. Leo was happy cuddled between his parents. Kensi turned her head to look at Deeks and found him already looking at her.

"I love you." Deeks said softly.

"I love you too." Kensi smiled.

Deeks pressed a quick kiss to her lips in response.

"I wove you both!" Leo exclaimed.

Kensi laughed. "And we love you more." She told the boy.

The three of them chatted for a bit, before they all fell asleep, surrounded by the ones they loved more than anything.
