Chapter 36
Hey guys! Sorry this chapter took so long. I wanted it to be really special because this actually is the last chapter of the first book I've written ever. Therefore I hope you enjoy!
He threw another door open, sending files and papers into the air and eventually onto the floor.
He was running out of time.
This whole situation was getting out of hand. Many agents already fled the slowly crumbling base and Alpha was just adding insult to injury. The luminescent floors began chipping and cracking as loud tremors shook everything.
A sweaty palm ran through his hair.
He had to find it. He flipped desks and tables onto their backsides. Frantically, he looks around and cursed when he didn't see it.
He needed the mainframe computer. It held the information for shutting down the project.
If only he could find it.
Leaving the room ransacked, he ran on to the next room.
The standoff was still ongoing.
Alpha wasn't letting up nor were their team, but it was obvious that each side was beginning to get tired.
However, it was obvious who had the upper hand.
"Damnit! Why are you all still alive?!" Alpha rages.
"We already told." Gary says breathing heavily.
"We won't let you win." May pants.
Alpha frowns at their words.
"You should just forget it. I'm never going to give up this body!" She sneers.
"No need to worry! By the time we're done with you, you won't have a body." Dawn snaps.
Alpha just laughs and points her naginata at them.
"Let's see you try."
"Let's go girls!" Misty commands.
Alpha's eyes dart towards Misty, and the rest of the girls file in besides her.
Misty closes her eyes and a large stream of water is created. May throws fireballs, and Leaf grows thorny vines. Together the attacks form an elemental dragon, which lunges at Alpha.
"Ha! As if that puny thing could hurt me!"
As the elemental dragon came close to her, her weapon pierced through it.
"Dawn!"
With Alpha distracted, a beam of light strikes Alpha. She goes flying back, crashing into metal walls, leaving the imprint of her body.
The girls exchange high fives.
Unfortunately, they celebrated too soon. The ground trembled again. Tiles broke as the earth spiked up from further underground. Scrambling for safe ground, ducking for cover, it was all for naught.
They laid limply on the ground, battered and bruised, like a normal type pokemon battling a fighting type. Alpha flew down and pushed the blunt end of her weapon on Riley chest.
"You can't win. I am the strongest and best Fear. I won't be defeated by mere humans."
Suddenly, flower bulbs sprout from the ground. Opening one by one, each released a small white powder.
"What the-"
A large shadowy gas blows in, obscuring all sight, even Alpha's enhanced senses couldn't detect anything. Riley's body has somehow moved away from her initial surprise, much to her annoyance.
She tilts her head to the right, avoiding a rapid wind current, which would have sent her flying. She's not quick enough to block the shadow ball.
After the first, the rest is bombard of shadow balls and air currents.
Spinning her weapon rapidly along with a few spins and flips, she deflects the all the attacks. They wouldn't let up the attacks though.
Alpha, now getting annoyed, jumps up breaking through the smog. She suddenly feels a stab of pain in the arm. She glares at her arm which was bleeding.
Out of the corner of her eye, she catches a glint of electricity. She leans back, missing Ash, aiming to give her another electrified punch. (Kinda like Sasuke using Chidori)
With malice filled eyes, she doesn't hesitate to slam the side of her blade across his face.
"Ahhh!"
Leaving a nasty gash on his face, the crashes to the ground and crumbled.
"Oh my god! Ash!"
Misty rushes up to him. She cradles his head in her arms, wiping blood off his face.
"Misty, how is he?" Riley calls out.
"Not good, he's out cold!"
Pikachu runs over to Ash and starts shaking his shoulder.
"Pika-pi!"
Dax and Riley quickly pull Ash by the door.
"What a weakling! You claim you want to save your friends, but you can barely pull your own weight against me!" She mocks.
Misty grits her teeth, balling her fists until they turned white.
"Angry? Then come and-"
Alpha suddenly clutches her head and stops speaking. Her eyes to blank as she stands. V notices this and frowns.
"What's happening?" Dax asks nervously.
"I don't know.." Riley responds, sizing up the situation.
"Her guard is down! Let's take her out!" Misty commands.
"Right!"
(In Alpha's head)
"I still can't break through!" Shane groans.
"What will we do?" Alpha asks frantically.
"Dammit!" Shane yells, smashing her fists into the walls.
The two were trapped.
"I'm sorry….this is all my fault….."
She begins tearing up. She tries to stop them from spilling but a few slip down her face. Shane puts her hand on her hand on her head. She ruffles it softly.
"Don't worry, we'll find a way out."
A loud maniacal laugh interrupts them. The two look amongst the walls to find the voice, but they know they won't find the owner.
"You….." Shane sneers.
"Still trapped?" The voice mocks.
"Hey! Give me my body back!" Alpha yells.
The voice just laughs, the sound ricocheting off the walls.
"You desired power. In exchange I gained your body."
Alpha looks down, her eyes clouded with disappointment.
"You'll never escape! I am now the host of this body!"
Laughter fills the room once more.
"Don't worry. We'll figure something out." Shane says in an assuring voice.
"I hope you're right…"
"Come on! Let's give it all we've got!" Shane grins.
Alpha looks at her and smiles.
"Ok."
"Flame Burst!"
"Earthquake!"
Both attacks collide and crash into the wall. As the smoke clears, the wall still looks clean and untouched.
Alpha releases her head and dodges the incoming attacks.
"No! She woke up!" May yelps.
Alpha grins.
"Were you hoping I would just die?" She says in a mocking tone.
"Alpha."
She turns quickly to her master.
"Yes Master?"
"You've tortured them enough….."
The group blinks in surprise. Was V really giving them mercy?
"Kill them."
They should've known better. They can only watch as she nods eagerly.
"Yes Master."
She eyes them with a malicious look, grinning like a serial killer.
"Looks like it's time to meet your end."
She pulls back her weapon and slashes them with mercy. Everyone manages to parry a few attacks, but they can't keep up with her speed. Blood spurts and splatters, soaking the carpets crimson.
"Heh! Still alive?"
The group staggers up, struggling to let gravity have it's way with them. She grins and points the naginata at them.
"Die!"
"Yes! Finally!"
He grins as he pushes over a bookshelf, revealing a room. Cautiously, he pushes through the door. No one and nothing was inside. Well there was one thing.
One lone switch, glowing an eerie gold color.
This has to be is.
Hands and fingers grip the lever, and with a thrust, it is deactivated. The color drains and is replaced by bright red.
"I hope that was the right switch….. Better go check!"
He dashes from the room, his heart heavy with mixed emotions.
"Erk!"
Alpha writhes in pain suddenly, dropping the naginata with a thundering clank. V's eyes widen at the phenomenon. She pulls at her hair, screaming in agony. Riley eyes Alpha with concern.
"Volkner! What have you done to her!?" He yells.
V doesn't respond. Instead he just watched the girl scream in pain.
"What's happening to her?" Dax asks nervously.
"I don't know, but stay back. Anything could happen." Misty warns him.
Bright light emits from Alpha's body.
"Why!? Why is this happening!? STOP IT!" She screams.
The radiating gold aura originally was replaced by clashes of color: blue, green, purple, red, and brown. Everyone cover their eyes as the lights turn into burning white.
"NO!"
FLASH!
The burning sensation begins to die as the group hesitantly opens or uncovers their eyes.
"We….. we're free?" A soft voice asks.
"It seems so….." A blunt voice answers.
"Now that's what I'm talkin' 'bout!" A cheerful voice answers.
When the smoke clears, three people stand in the midst of the explosion, backs turned from their friends.
"N-no way…" Leaf whispers.
"It's them! LEON!" May yells, tearing up.
The three turn.
"MAY!"
The two crash into each other, hugging and blubbering hard.
"Misty…. Dax…. I'm so….. I'm so…. Happy. Y-you're ok." Robin sniffles.
She tries to hold back her tears, but starts bawling as soon as she got into their arms.
Drama stared at Leaf the same way she usual does.
"Drama, I'm glad you're ok." Leaf says in relief.
She nods and walks close to her. She looks up at Leaf, surprising her. A soft smile accompanied a steady stream of tears, but she made no audible sound. She wraps her arms around Leaf and doesn't let go.
"Thank….you…" She mumbles.
"Aw! Drama, you're just a cinnamon roll!" Leaf teases, hugging her back.
"Wait! Where's Shane!?" Dawn yells frantically.
The tearful reunions abruptly stop at that revelation. The Fears immediately look back at where they appeared. Smoke still covered the majority of the room.
"She would have called out if she was here….." Robin says quietly.
"Hehehehe….hehehehehe…..he"
The smoke clears as the ominous laughter continues.
The Fears protectively stood in front of the group.
Alpha was still standing.
And somewhat melting.
Her once radiating power was now nothing more than a dark aura. Her eyes became bloodshot and it was evident she was losing her mind. Her arms clung to her sides, knees not far from buckling under her weight. Even her once shining blade seemed to morph into her deteriorating body.
"Wh-what is-" Leon says.
"A failed lab experiment." Drama says, seemingly unfazed by the gruesome events.
"Her body must not be able to support itself without the power of the Fears." Riley says.
"I…..I still…...have one…" She cackles, her voice now raspy.
"No, you won't for long." Robin says.
Holding out her arm, water molecules sprout from thin air and quickly freeze into the shape of a katana. White vapor surrounds it.
"I'll take you down with my Dry Ice Blade."
Drama follows suit. Sending her hands into her own shadow, her fans are pulled out and open. A dark aura envelops it.
"Let's end this." She says.
Leon grins at her sisters. Her bow grows from the ground. She pulls back, a glowing arrowed notched, pointing towards Alpha's head.
"I couldn't have said it better myself." She smirks.
The three stare down Alpha. It was the Fears versus the Omega Fear. A moment passed before each Fear, artificial and real, sprung into action. Robin and Drama rush forward, hoping to take her down from a frontal approach as Leon stayed as a distant hitter. Alpha manages to parry each attack with ease, her naginata did not become weaker despite her current state.
"Damn…as much….as I hate to admit it…..she's good.." Drama pants.
"That weapon is too strong." Robin says.
"Makes sense. It is all of our weapons combined into one." Leon nods.
As the Fears try to regain their breath, Alpha counterstrikes.
"Take this!"
Slamming her weapon towards the ground, a cyclone of air is launched at them. They stand their ground as the wind whipped at their cheeks and clothes. Alpha glared angrily at them. They were practically unharmed besides for messy hair.
"It seems we only have one option." Leon states.
The other two look at her. They said nothing but their eyes told orders only a Fear could understand. Alpha must have sensed something because she raised her guard.
"Everyone stand back, you don't want to get caught up in this attack." Leon giggles.
The group takes several steps back and watched them anxiously. The Fears distance themselves from one another and surround Alpha.
"You think you can take me out in a group attack? Your fools! Nothing but fools!" Alpha taunts.
All three close their eyes.
"Ancient Dragon!" They say simultaneously.
Black chains wrap around Alpha, stopping her from running or avoiding their attack. She attempts to cut the shackles with her weapon, but it didn't even scratch them.
Each Fear's hand colors a faint but then bright color.
"Dragon of the South!" Robin chants.
Robin unclasps her hands and draws a circle with her hands, creating a blue circle with a swirling vortex in the middle. Thrusting both hands forward, water and ice jet out.
"Dragon of the North!" Drama states.
Her fan separates itself into single spokes and revolve in the air. The black symbol Shi forms, and an ominous purple and black beam explodes out.
"Dragon of the East!" Leon chants.
Her green tinted hand draws a large swirl. As she draws, cherry blossoms begin orbiting around her and the swirl. She points forward and a bright green beam mixed with flower petals surges forward.
All three attacks hit Alpha, who let's out an anguished scream. However, she is withstanding the attacks.
"We need more power." Drama states.
"Shane! If can hear us, you know what to do!" Robin calls out.
Shane nods at her sister's request. She looks at Alpha calmly.
"It's best if you take a step back."
Alpha nods nervously and listens to Shane, taking several steps back.
"Dragon of the West!" Shane yells.
Shane takes a deep breath, holds it, and takes a stance. Her eyes looks like a fire had ignited within her irises. A black dragon tattoo grows down her right arm, faintly glowing with a tint of red. Her hand quickly moves to her chin, and her upper body juts forward, large streams of lava-like fire emerging from her mouth, attacking the wall.
The walls around the two quake and crack, slowly breaking down. But the walls don't fall apart like it was supposed to.
"Damn it!" Shane growls.
"We need more still." Leon's voice states.
"Keep pushing!" Drama yells.
Each Fear continues their attack in hope of ending this battle. Alpha watches Shane fight. She closes her eyes, imaging the other three fighting for their lives too.
She clenches her fists.
They begin to glow faintly as well.
"I can't just stand and watch….."
The light intensifies.
"I want to help too!"
With new found will, burning light engulfs her hands.
"Omega Dragon!"
Spinning her hands in wide circles, the light thrusts forward as a cyclone.
"PUSH!" Shane commands.
"Ha!"
Each attack blows through Alpha, who is finally deteriorating. She claws desperately towards V. She tries to speak, but she cannot. She mouths Master one last time, reaching out him with a crumbling arm.
She bursts into dust and then disappears into nothing.
Robin, Drama, and Leon were on the brink of exhaustion.
"We…..we…...we did it." Robin says with grin.
"It's finally…...over…." Drama nods.
The group breaks into relieved cheers. V stood and stared where his creation once was.
"Looks like everything turned out ok."
"You can say that again."
Dawn squeals with joy and barrels into Shane, followed by her sisters. It was tear filled hug. Alpha stood to the side watching.
"Is that?" Misty asks cautiously.
"No, this Alpha is good. The real Alpha." Shane says.
Shane opens her arms to her. Robin, Leon, and Drama follow suit. With a grin, Alpha jumps into their embrace.
It was a beautiful sight.
"I finally got to meet you all….but it's time to say goodbye." Alpha says sadly.
"What do you mean goodbye? You're free now." Robin insists.
She shakes her head sadly. As she shakes, her once god-like aura and clothes disappear. Replacing them was a white collared shirt folded to her elbows and a cafe colored tie. She had black overall shorts, brown and black striped thigh socks, and black Oxford shoes. But her long black hair still had strands of gold. Her body began to become transparent.
"My body cannot stay stable without the energy of the Fears."
"Can't we do something?" Leaf pleads.
The group stands in a foreboding silence. It is Drama who breaks it with a sigh.
"It seems we cannot do anything. However, you will live on in our memories." She states.
Robin wipes her tears and smiles at Alpha. Leon giggles and Shane only smiles a little.
"We are Fears. Organic or Artificial. We are family."
Alpha smiles happily, sparkling tears dripping down her cheeks as she fades.
"I know my fear now. The fear of being forgotten…." She whispers.
Although they cannot physically touch her anymore, the four join hands with Alpha.
"You won't be."
She completely disappears, not leaving a single trace of herself or her existence.
"She's in a better place now." Riley says.
"I hope so…." May adds.
"Pft! How pathetic….."
Everyone glares at V, who was still seated on his chair.
"If there's anything remotely pathetic here, it's you." Shane growls.
He throws a pokéball and pulls a revolver from his pant pocket. Raichu and its trainer standing dauntingly above them.
Before either party can fight, the room starts rumbling. Debris and platter, as well as cemented bricks fall from the ceiling.
"The building's collapsing!" Ash yells.
"Obviously!" Gary yells back.
"Come on, we need to get out of here!" Drew says.
He motions the group to follow. May, Ash, Misty, Robin, and Dax quickly run after. As the others set off to follow, they narrowly dodge a bullet.
V was walking to them, reloading his gun for another round.
"Don't you even TRY to run away!" He yells angrily.
"Can't you just take a hint and lose already!?" Shane growls.
She lunges at V, sending both of them to the ground. She looks back at them, watching Drama and Leon desperately trying to come closer to help. She glances back at the ceiling. More chunks were raining down on them.
"Stay back!"
She throws back a wave of fire, blocking their path. Leon recoiled in shock and Drama stumbled back.
"What are you doing!?" Leon yelled.
"Get out of here! I'll hold him off, so run!"
"No! We're not leaving you behind!" Dawn says.
"We just got you back! Not again!" Drama wails.
Before Dawn could act, Paul grabbed her by the waist, nodded at Shane, and dragged her out of the building.
Shane let out a relieved sigh but was promptly shoved, and punched in the face. V and her began wrestling on the ground, clawing at each others skin and clothes.
"Shane!" Drama says.
Leon grabs her shoulder and looks at her. Drama's gaze drops and she nods slowly. She follows the others out of the building.
"Get back here!" V screams, raising his gun at the fleeing Leon.
He pulls the trigger, shooting Shane in the arm. Leon looks back in horror, but she pushes on, fulfilling Shane's final wish. After Leon ran through the corridor, a large chunk of wall blocked the exit, trapping Shane and V.
"I need to get them! I need this power!"
V screams in anguish as he claws at the rubble blocking his way. He let's out a sudden gasp in pain.
"Y-you!" He growls.
Shane thrusts her sai further into his chest. The ceiling gives way, and everything comes crashing down.
"If I'm going to hell, no way I'm going without you!" Shane grins.
Outside, the group is in grieving.
Dax was trying to comfort the crying Robin, but was failing. All he could do was hold her tight. Drama and Leon didn't speak either.
"I'm so sorry guys." Dawn mumbles, breaking the silence.
"Don't. Shane wanted it this way." Leon says.
"Like usual, she does things without getting out consent first." Drama deadpans.
"She did what she could to ensure we all escaped." Riley says.
Drama bows her head and says nothing. They all are left in silence.
"We all should get going. It's only a matter of time before the authorities arrive." Riley instructs.
Everyone nods and goes in their separate direction.
Is this what death feels like?
Floating forever in this endless darkness?
I can't feel anything.
I can't see anything.
And yet…
I'm happy…
In the dark, a small circle of light came into her view. The circle began to grow, filling the room with bright white light.
There's no way…..
I don't deserve to be free.
A hand reaches out, coming closer into view.
Do I truly deserve this?
A quiet voice calls out her name.
She hesitantly holds out her hand. Their fingers touch and then lock. She feels herself being pulled out of the dark abyss.
The light blinds her.
The police arrived an hour later. There were several reports about screams and quakes originating at the school.
They discovered the damaged headquarters of Silent. Contact information of several top agents and had them detained for questioning. All files were burned and hard drives were wiped clean or missing. But there was one room with the most destruction compared to everything else. The roof was had completely collapsed. There were burns, cracks, water damage, and more decorating the walls. They searched the piles of debris and found bodies. None could be identified.
The police weren't too sure of what to say about this case. However, they announced it was taken care of and sealed off the entrance to the secret lab.
Because of the investigation, Veilstone High closed for a week.
When school reopened, Principal Volkner had been replaced. And many students agreed they liked Principal Riley better. Especially female students.
As the year continued, it seemed everyone finally could live a normal life. No more spying. No more stealing. No more killing. Sometimes old members of Silent turned up but Riley usually dealt with them.
During the last few weeks of school, Robin, Drama, and Leon came to school with a red ribbon tied onto them. Robin's was tied to her wrist, Drama's around her neck, and Leon's around her upper arm muscle.
Dawn was the one who noticed first.
"So what's with the new fashion statement?"
Robin grinned sheepishly.
"It was something I came up with….." She mumbles.
"You don't have to be embarrassed. It was a good idea." Leon chuckled.
"So what's with it?" Misty asks.
"It's a ribbon I found around my room a while ago. Whenever I look at it, I imagine Shane smiling at me, giving me a thumbs up like old time."
"She then began carrying it around like a child with its favorite blanket. So Leon proposed the bracelet idea." Drama shrugs.
"It's pretty much a momento." Leon grins.
"Then I want one too!" Dawn says.
"Same here!" May nods.
The other girls quickly agreed as well.
"O-ok! I'll make some more!"
From that day on the girls wore red ribbons to remember their friend.
-6 months later-
"Good work today! Take your paychecks and enjoy the rest of your day!"
"Yes sir!"
The group left the little restaurant and walked down the corridor. The sea breeze pulled gently at their hair.
"Aw man! He docked my pay!"
"It's because you kept eating your customers' food!"
"Sucks for you Ashy-boy!"
"He docked me too."
"He did tell you to start smiling more."
"I'm not going to waste my energy on something like that Troublesome."
"Looks like Gary and I are the only who got full pay."
"Actually, us ladies didn't get docked."
"And we got tips for days!"
The group continues their friendly banter as they headed to the deck. Their friends were waiting for them.
After graduating from high school, the gang wanted to get away. They ended up deciding to head to the Alola region, but decided to work for some time. They wanted a redo.
A new life.
"Ah! Look! There they are! Robin!"
Robin stops her conversations and smiles at Misty and the others.
"Hey everyone, how are you?"
"We're fine. It's payday after all." May jokes.
"Still working?" Ash asks.
She shakes her head no.
"The last trainer just picked up their pokemon."
On the ship, Robin worked with Nurse Joy at the Pokemon Daycare. Drama and Leon had gotten jobs as well. Leon helped teach dance classes, and Drama was the pool lifeguard.
"Look at you! All grown up and working!" Ash grins, ruffling her hair.
"Hey! Where's my praise?" Leon joked as she approached the group.
"You're doing so great, we don't even have to say anything." May teases.
"I'm flattered but I prefer verbal praise, not mental."
"I've returned." Drama says.
"Looks like we're all here now." Leaf says.
"Shall we start getting ready?" Drama asks.
"Probably. The banquet is going to start soon." Gary says.
"Yeah! Time to get our grub on!" Ash cheers.
"Alright! Eat on!" Leon yells.
"Is food the only thing on your minds, isn't it?"
"Yep!"
"Let's just meet back here in an hour." Dawn suggests.
"Alright."
"See ya soon ladies."
"Yeah yeah."
The banquet was amazing. Endless amounts of food, much to Ash and Leon's happiness, and there was good entertainment.
Dawn and Paul danced slowly together, one being better than the other. Dawn laughed and Paul replied with a small grin.
Misty and Ash stayed by the banquet. Ash was stuffing his face and Misty said the only reason she was staying nearby was to make sure he didn't choke.
May was eating as well but slowed due to her arguing with her favorite grass haired friend Drew.
Leaf and Gary stood besides the ship railing, enjoying the sunset. Gary draped his arm around her shoulders. She didn't complain.
Leon occupied part of the banquet, claiming she worked all day and deserved to be like a Tepig and pig out.
Drama was watching everyone from a higher deck in silence, a small smile gracing her lips. Robin was currently looking for Dax, and was rushing up the stairs.
"Drama! Dram- Oof!"
"You alright?"
Robin looked up and widened her eyes in surprise. A young woman with shoulder length black hair and a floppy sunhat held her hand out to her.
Robin stared at her intently.
She noticed the lady's stomach was slightly protruding.
"Um…...are you ok?"
Before she could answer, Drama silently descended the steps.
"Sorry ma'am. Come on Rob."
Taking Robin's hand in hers, she guided her back down the stairs. Robin glanced at the woman once more.
Her large hat covered much of her face, but she looked, or at least felt, familiar.
Robin ignored her thoughts, knowing she can't keep imagining Shane was any random stranger she happened to come across. The two rejoined the party, along with everyone else.
The woman in the floppy hat looked down upon the party, then up at the moon. It truly was the perfect night for a party.
But her little passenger seemed to disagree.
Backing away from the upper deck railing, she removes the hat and sighs in relief. A man with glasses and a construction hat stands besides her.
In the moonlight, dark red streaks burst to life upon her head.
"They didn't recognize you?" He asks softly.
"It's better this way."
He gently takes her hand, interlocking it with his own.
She leans on his shoulder.
"I'm sorry."
"You thought it was the right thing to do. It's ok. And in the end you saved us."
"The only thing I did right was stopping Alpha."
"So pulling me out of the rubble wasn't right?"
"Th-That's not what I meant!"
"Hehehe! I know."
They stand in silence, watching the passengers enjoy the event.
"Shane, you should go lie down."
She looks down at the scene below once more. Her sisters and friends gathered for a photo.
Robin clung to Dax's right arm. Misty and Ash were behind them, grinning as if they just won the lottery. Leaf pulled Drama in front of her, and Gary stood besides her. They looked like they were imitating a family portrait. Leon had her arms around May and Drew's shoulders in that carefree manner she always seemed to have. Dawn and Paul stood together, but it was Paul who held Dawn close to him this time.
The glint of red was evident on everyone of them.
A lone tear trickled down her cheek.
A kick tapped her innards.
She turns away and smiles at him.
"Let's go."
