Chapter 35
Gabby
With each step I take closer to the station, my heart quickens it pace. I'm not nervous, I'm excited, I'm excited to get back to being me. This is the part of me that I miss the most.
"Just breathe," Matt whispers in my ear as he takes my right hand in his own.
I turn to look at his encouraging smile, "I'm just excited."
He chuckled, "The singing in the shower wasn't a give away at all."
"Hey," I shout back, "You didn't seem to mind!"
"I didn't and I don't," He stated as he quickly kissed.
"Hey that is enough of that!" We hear and quickly break apart. Herrmann, Otis, and Cruz are standing in front of the open garage door watching us.
I can feel the heat cover my face as embracement fills my body, "hey guys," I say as Herrmann pulls me into a hug.
"We missed you around here," He said as he released me.
"I missed you guy too," I say as I give the two other guys a hug. "So what have I missed around here?"
"Not much," Cruz answered as we all made our way into the house. I greeted by everyone as I went to the locker room. Matt followed behind me without saying too much; I could feel his eyes on me.
I open my locker and turn to him, "What is it?" I ask.
"What?" he asked looking puzzled.
"You haven't said much and I feel you watching me," I simply reply as I put my bag in the locker.
"I have always watched you," Matt smirked without turning around. "I'm just glad that you're here."
I smile to myself as the words sync in, "So, what do you mean you have always watched me?" I playfully asked as I closed my locker.
Matt closed his and turned around, "Well Shay isn't exactly my type, so that just leaves you."
"Oh you think you're funny?" I asked watching him step closer to me.
"I'm hilarious," he replied as he rested his warm hands on my hips.
His mouth moved closer to mine, "You better have Shay do that," I say before his lips touch mine and quickly walk away.
"Oh come on!" I hear him call out as I continue to walk away.
Matt
Watching Gabby on shift today really made me so proud. I know that she had a lot of things to think about when she decided to come back to work so soon, but I feel like she made the right choice.
"So you and Gabby?" asked Severide as he took the open seat next to me.
I nod my head, "Yeah," I simply reply taking another bite of my sandwich.
"When did this happen?" he asked.
"Just a couple of days ago," I was unsure of how to honestly answer his question. Gabby has been a big part of my life for more then a few days, but I never told her until recently.
"Well I'm happy for you guys," Severide said as he pulled me out of my thoughts.
"Thanks man."
"You do know that if things don't work out for you guys that everyone guy here will be up your ass," Severide added.
"Trust me," I said as I looked around, "I'm well aware of it."
"Have you guys heard anything about this guy that attacked Gabby?"
"Antonio is still investigating and after the text the other day…"
"What about the text?" Severide asked sounding surprised.
"The other day Gabby got a text with a picture of us at my house," I say trying to keep my anger in check. Just the thought of anyone doing that to Gabby just sends me right into attack mode.
"Shit, I'm sorry Matt."
"I know, I just hate that this is happening to her," I say.
"If you guys need anything, just let me know."
"Thanks, that means a lot," I say.
"Ambulance 61, truck 81, and squad 3 car accident on Michigan and canal"
I quickly stand up and rush toward the truck. As I'm putting on my gear, I look over at Gabby getting into the ambulance. To watch her spring in action, it's like nothing has changed, expect now my worry for her safety has greatly increased.
"Shit," I say to myself as I climb into passenger side of the truck.
Gabby
"Let's get a C-collar on this guy then load him up," I say as Shay and I move around the man Severide has brought out of the house. We quickly move to make sure we give him the best chance of survival. I get into the truck first as Capp and Severide help load Shay load him into the back of ambulance. As I turn to guide the gurney, I notice a tall figure standing in the middle of the road standing a few yards behind them. My breath catches in my throat and realization dawns on me.
He sees that I see him and large smile grows across his face. Before I can say anything the door slam and pull me out of the stand off. I know that I need to say something, but right now this man's life is what important.
The drive to the hospital took about five minutes, Shay and I quickly rushed the man into the hospital for the doctors to do their job. We watched as he was wheeled away from us.
"You think he will be okay?" Shay asked as he took the dirty sheet off the gurney.
"I think that he has a decent chance," I state.
"You alright?" Shay stopped at what she was doing and looked at me.
"Yeah, I'm fine," I reassure her the best I can, but I can tell she doesn't believe me.
She simply nods her head and seems to drop the subject for now, but I know Shay better than that. I'm just glad this will give me enough time to figure out something to say.
The ride back to the station is filled with small conversation. Shay has been telling me about her new relationship with Amy and how things are going for them. I am truly happy for her.
"So what about you and Casey?" she asked changing the subject.
"Things are going great," I reply. "I'm just worried that we are moving too fast. If I wouldn't have been staying with him, would we be together?
"If you guys had just meant and didn't know each other's whole life story, then I would say yes, but considering that you guys have known each other for years and both of have been hiding your feelings, then the answer is no. And to answer the other part of your question, yes. Yes, you would have gotten together but it would have taken FOREVER!"
I laugh at Shay's last statement as we pull into the garage. We both get out of the ambulance and make our way into the kitchen area still chuckling.
"Hey ladies," Casey says as he sees us walking in. "What's so funny?" he ask us looking curious.
"Nothing too much, just telling Shay about my boring sex life," I reply causing Shay to chuckle.
"Really?" Casey asked looking surprised. "Because you weren't complaining when I…"
"Okay," I say loudly cutting Casey off. "That is enough, I'm going to run to the bathroom," I say a quickly remove myself from the conversation.
Matt
Shay and I watch as Gabby walks toward the bathroom.
"Do you have a minute?" Shay asked turning to face me.
"Yeah, what's up?"
"I'm worried about Dawson," she says. My stomach drops as they words leave her mouth.
"What is it?" I asked with concern laced in my voice.
"She just seem distracted and wouldn't say anything."
"Well she has had a lot to deal with."
"I know, but this morning she was fine and then after the last run she started acting different."
I nod my head, "Thanks Shay. You are really a great friend."
"Gabby is one of my best friends and there isn't anything in the world I wouldn't do for her, even if she didn't want me to."
I had to smile at Shay's words, because it was how I felt about her too.
