Chapter 34
Now the games begin
As they walk into the house Joey sits at the kitchen table as Charlie flicks on the kettle and puts her keys down. Sighing heavily as her head pounds she thinks.
Why can't anything just be simple, I'm so fed up of nothing being straightforward for us and now Davenport. I just want to relax with the woman I love.
Joey watches Charlie closely as she is lost in thought. Getting to her feet Joey walks to Charlie and soothingly takes her in her arms, holding her closely and tightly she whispers,
"Baby with everything we have been through, there is nothing you can tell me that will change my mind about you." She moves back, taking Charlie's beautiful yet confused face in she kisses her gently before saying,
"Okay?" Charlie laughs a little at Joeys ease before saying,
"Okay. I'll make some coffee and we will talk."
Davenport sits outside the house and watches, after following the women back from the station, he is aware that Charlie will now know that he is no longer in the force and that he is certainly not investigating the case. He also knows that Charlie is an excellent officer and that she will already be thinking of reasons for his sudden appearance. However by the time she works it all out, he knows it will be too late. His phone rings and he breathes in deeply before answering saying,
"It's about time you got in contact." The voice on the other end was deep and forceful, saying with anger,
"Why did you go and see her? That was not part of the plan! Now the element of surprise is lost and you have given Charlie a heads up. She already has her little minion checking up on you." Davenport scoffs before arrogantly saying,
"She won't find anything; since I escaped I have been lying low. As for seeing Charlie, believe me the element of surprise was visible. You and I both know that she will do anything for that girl of hers. So sit tight. It will all go to plan."
The silence on the other end of the phone speaks volumes as the man finally says,
"Whatever happens, my name is to be kept out of this. That has been made clear right?" Davenport smiles sarcastically as he watches Leah enter the house, making his hand into a gun shape he follows her with it before pretending to shoot her. Then saying with distain,
"Don't worry. There will be no witnesses to identify any of us." With that he hangs up the phone before laughing a little and saying to himself,
"And if here is then everything will point in your direction."
He smiles to himself before putting the car in gear and speeding away with a screech.
As Leah walks into the kitchen she can feel the tension in the air, both women where hugging their cups of coffee and a sudden silence fills the room. Feeling a little uncomfortable yet trying to lighten the mood she says,
"Something I said?" Charlie finally smiles before saying,
"Of course not, we were just talking about Ruby." Joey looks at Charlie with confusion before realising that Charlie simply does not want to share her past with everyone. Leah sensing that Charlie is being untruthful decides not to push it and simply smiles before leaving the kitchen, deciding that she doesn't want to get caught up in any more drama. Joey watches Charlie expectantly before saying,
"So?" Charlie breathes in deeply again before preparing to tell Joey everything about Andrew Davenport.
