Surge 33

Previously on Academic Surge...

Makoto Nanaya, a beastkin who all of her life, had lived it with some eventfulness in her waking memory. So when she visited Sora's room, thinking she would get a confession from the guy about how much he loves her, she was shocked but she jumped on the idea anyways. I mean...what harm does someone confessing their love for you could really do.

But she got a really hard awakening when she found out from the man himself that he was a mercenary from an Infamous group, The Black Lotus. It did not help that he was actually her would be murderer from a long time ago, now staring in front of her. So now that the truth has been revealed to Makoto and Makoto knowing Sora for who he really was... How will she react.

And Now, the continuation of Academic Surge...

Makoto's hands shook greatly. She had just snapped out of the flashback she had but it felt so clear in her mind. Her throat was dry but it didn't dare to try swallow any saliva out of pure unadulterated fear. The person in front of her was the person she met that fateful day, A day that she chose to forget out of her memories. Now that those memories have resurfaced, Makoto cannot deny the truth anymore. She knew what she had to do right at that moment.

"Makoto...you're starting to worry me." Sora said out of pure concern as Makoto did not dare to speak a word. Her fearful eyes locked at his own eyes as her thoughts only muttered one simple sentence. 'Run...RUN MAKOTO RUN!' Makoto then kicked Sora in the stomach and bolted for the exit. Stunned by what she had done, Sora could only stare in shock at what she did. Sora's mind began to rush with thoughts, thoughts that went specifically to Makoto right now.

"Makoto...!" Instinctively, Sora got off the couch and ran for her, worried sick. 'Why would you do something like that Makoto! What's on your mind right now!' Sora thought as he gave chase to her. Makoto had got up to the ground floor as she panted heavily, fear grasping her heart. "He's the one...oh god, he's going to try killing me again!" Makoto muttered in fearful shock as she tried to calm down her fast beating heart. She then hears footsteps, loud footsteps rushing from the basement as her face paled.

"SHIT!" Makoto sweared as she ran upstairs. Sora just managed to reach the ground floor as he saw the figure of a squirrel tail run upstairs. Giving chase, he began leaping his way up, skipping the steps entirely as he reached the floor Makoto was heading halfway. "Makoto calm down!" Sora yelled out but his words fell onto deaf ears as she ran back downstairs to the second floor. Sora clenched his teeth as his worries for Makoto increased. 'She fearing me for some reason...What could it be...' Sora thought as he ran back down for her.

Makoto had taken cover behind a corner as she tried to gather her thoughts together. Taking a short peek, she saw Sora running as he yelled out desperately, "COME BACK MAKOTO!" Makoto did not dare say a word as she sprinted, 'I HAVE TO GET AWAY FROM HIM! OUT OF HERE NOW!' Makoto thought as she sprinted as she soon saw a dead end that had a window. Makoto didn't want to wait any longer as she just jumped right through it. Glass shattered around her as she rolled on the soft grass.

Sora saw the stunt Makoto pulled off as he knew he couldn't do the same, he couldn't aggravate his injuries even further. Looking around, he found a firehouse and grabbed it before he started running. Jumping out of the window, he used the hose like a rappel as he slowly roped himself down. Makoto saw this and continued running as her face paled even further. 'HE JUST WON'T STOP!' Makoto thought as she ran further into the forest. Sora saw this as he looked at the sky.

'Oh no...night is coming!' Sora thought as the bright orange sky was slowly dimming to a midnight blue as he looked at the forest. If Makoto ran into the forest right now, who knows what dangers will await her right now. Sora couldn't just leave her inside there and go in there tommorow. "Makoto...I am coming for you whether you like it or not!" Sora said as he charged headfirst into the forest.

MAKOTO POV

Oh god, Oh god! I have to keep running right now. My life is in danger right now! As I kept on running through this near infinite like forest, my thoughts begin to rush to my mind. Taking cover behind a tree, I breathed hard. Sora Minakaze...one of my friends, is actually the killer that day. Oh god, Sora Minakaze killed those people...and...and he nearly killed me! Is...Is he here just to finish what he started that day!? Oh god...was he always just lying to me!

"MAKOTO! WHERE ARE YOU!" A voice shouted as my back crawled with sweat. My breathing came to a dead halt as I didn't dare to breathe a single breath. If he finds me, he's definitely going to try to kill me! 'No matter what, I cannot let him find me!' I thought as I sprinted off. I accidentally stepped on a twig as I hear footsteps approach my direction fast. "MAKOTO PLEASE LISTEN TO ME!" the voice shouted back as I turned my head and shouted back for the first time this chase.

"S-STAY AWAY FROM ME YOU CREEP!" I shouted as the footsteps got louder as I picked up my pace to hopefully lose this creep. Yes...He's been just pretending to be my friend so he can kill me! THAT'S GOT TO BE IT! I CANNOT BE WRONG ABOUT WHAT I THINK! Seeing a bush I can take cover into, I leapt into it without hesistation as I felt a piece of my clothing accidentally get entangled by the prickly bush.

N-NO! Damn it! I had no choice but to abandon my jacket as I continued running further into the forest with just the collar shirt that is a compulsary for students to wear. I continued to sprint for my life, careful to not let my skin get cut otherwise I would leave a blood trail for him to find. As I looked to the sky, I see darkness coming for me even further, something dangerous as I know if I stay here for too long, things will be bad. If I can just get back to the others, I can tell them and I will be safe from Sora!

I just need to hide right now!

SORA POV

Damn this forest is too dense, I can't run or see as much as I want to right now... Why did Makoto run off like that. Did she remember something that made her scared? I don't even know what is going on anymore. All I care about is for her safety right now, it's getting dark and the danger is looming even further, I can feel it deep within my heart right now. The instincts that were buried deep within me for the last two years began to kick into high gear.

These instincts that I was forced to hone in the time that I was a mercenary, I need them to work for me at full force right now. My brain began to rush with more thoughts about the possible locations Makoto could be right now. She must be hiding from me...that's why she's keeping her voice down right now. So if my hunch is right... She will try hiding in a bush as I saw a blue jacket entangled on one. Walking to it, I untangled it as I realize this was the jacket that I had repaired for Makoto as I recognised the stitching I had done for them.

Makoto must have tried to hide in this bush but it got stuck in there, I have to return this to her as I tied it around my waist. 'Got to give this back to her.' That is what I thought exactly as I continued walking down the continuously growing darkness. All I can think of now is why she ran off like that. I cannot come up with a single good reason why she would do that. It not only makes no sense for her to do that, it's just so sudden.

Then, a sharp cry was heard as the birds that were sleeping in the trees flew out of the trees. That cry belonged to Makoto as I chased after that voice. Something happened to her and I need to get to her right now! Running quickly, my heart has never beated this intensely for a single in a long time. The only times that my heart was allowed to have this intense of a beat was...was when Nee-san and Little sis were in danger.

'Please don't do anything reckless right now Makoto...I'm begging of you right now.' I thought as my feet couldn't stop running now. My weak beating heart was beating even harder right now. I finally ran to where the source of Makoto's cry, which was more of the same bushes I saw before. Searching through the bushes, I found a hole big enough to let a human go into... Oh no, Don't tell me she fell in there!

If she did fell in there, that means she is in the lower sections of the city right now! I need to head down there right now and get her out of there right now! Looking around, I found some twigs I could use to make a fire. Wrapping a handkerchief I found in Makoto's jacket pocket around a reasonably sized branch, I used the twigs to set it ablaze as I apologized to Makoto in my mind. As I took a deep breath, I looked at the hole with determination as I jumped.

Wait for me Makoto...I'm coming for you!

Soon after he jumped into the hole, Sora's feet landed on some uneven land as he rolled, careful to not extinguish the torch's fire. The darkness of the cave was creepy as he clenched the torch closer to himself. 'This was underneath the city all this time?' Sora thought as he looked around the mixture of nature and civilization. Rocks were the ground yet the walls looked like they were made centuries ago, having a dim grey to them with various pipes sticking out of the ground.

Having no time to enjoy the sight of the unique scenery, Sora made haste to look around as he stared around. He was looking for anything, an entrance, another hole, anything that could be a potential entrance for Makoto to go through. As he did so, he looked down and saw a small trail of blood that made him pale. This blood trail was just made recently as it still shined when Sora shined his torch on it.

'Oh no...Is Makoto wounded!?' Sora thought as he followed it for a short while to see it lead to a cave entrance. It felt very unwelcoming as Sora swallowed some of his saliva in tension rather than nervousness. Feeling the danger that will await him, Sora decided to arm himself as he forgot to bring his arm blades due to chasing after Makoto on such short notice and the other thing that is on him right now to defend himself...is the knife he used to kill his little sister with.

'...Can I really use it?...' Sora questioned himself as he placed his hand gently on the sheath. Ever since that day, never once has he used this knife for it's intended purpose to murder people. The crimson on the blade still remained as the day he stabbed Saeko, his little sister, with it, as if it was a curse he was forced to bear. Shaking his head and removing his shaky hand from the sheath, Sora went for a pipe stuck on the ground with a weird bend on it. Pulling it out, he noticed it looked like a boomerang as he swung it a few times.

'The weight's a bit off...but anything other than that is alright.' Sora thought as he readied himself at the cave with the torch in hand. He felt a strange kind of determination flow into him as more deep breathes followed. It's been a long time since he had something to protect, even if that person right now was acting strange at this moment of time. He still has an obligation to go and protect that person right now.

"Wait for me Makoto...I am getting us back home." Sora thought as he charged headfirst into the cave.

While Sora walked to the entrance of the cave, Makoto was exiting out of the exit of said cave. She closed one of her eyes out of pain. Dragging her feet a little, she had sprained her ankle due to the fall which got cut on a sharp rock. Though the wound isn't lethal, the gash was deep enough as Makoto struggled greatly. 'It hurts so much right now...I need to get it fixed...' Makoto thought as she finally stopped on some rocks that formed an ancient stairway of sorts and sat there.

Looking around her surroundings, she realized where she was. 'This is the same place me, Noel and Tsubaki fell into...talk about Irony...' Makoto thought as she ripped out one of her sleeves to soak up her wound. If she bandaged it just like that, the blood will just render it useless as she saw the rather large amount of blood she bled. After stopping the bleeding, she ripped out her other sleeve and separated the sleeve into strips before wrapping them tightly around her leg.

Testing the bandage by tapping on her wounded foot, she felt pain but the bandage was not coming off anytime soon. Taking time to close her eyes, she began to assess her situation as of the moment. "I'm stuck in a cave with no way of getting help... Injured at my foot so I can't fight as well... and I have...A killer after me." Makoto muttered as her thoughts went to Sora. Makoto began to doubt herself about Sora. Was he really the killer that day? Could he have been someone that looks similar to the man that fateful day? No matter how much she wanted to suppress that memory, she couldn't as she felt the darkness of her own heart crawling deeper.

Why did she have to remember that day? She tried so hard to forget that memory on her own that she made up lies of her own to block out the bad memories. She remembered the excuse she used was that she fell off a tree and injured herself badly. When she thought about it now, it was her worst excuse but it worked nevertheless as she tried to get comfortable on the place she was seated. 'Please let this be just one big nightmare...' Makoto begged in her mind as she pinched herself. She felt the pain and was greatly saddened by the answer her body gave her. This was no nightmare, this is reality and it was happening right now.

As soon as she did that, she heard metal clanging onto metal as she immediately tensed up her body. Peeking from a small hole that she could see through, she saw a person's shadow that glowed a reddish flame as she looked on. To her horror, She saw Sora which is the last person she wanted to see right now. She didn't even know if he was a friend or enemy right now, as he held a metal pipe as if it was a sword. She took cover once again as she does not want to be seen by him right now.

The air felt so cold right now as she shivered greatly. Makoto looked at the hole once again as she saw her jacket tied on his waist, making her realize that was how he was able to find her so easily. Sora looked around some more as suddenly, Makoto heard a low growl. This made her pale greatly as she held her legs. She tried to dismiss the sound as she heard it once again as she couldn't deny it, there were Chimeras in the area right now.

Makoto did what was necessary to keep herself away from the suspicion of the Chimeras, holding her legs and keeping quiet. Sora meanwhile was looking around some more as he breathed much more cautiously after hearing the growl. Walking to the source, he found a lone Chimera, asleep. This Chimera was most likely a nocturnal creature as it had the mixtures of a panther with it's jet black body and a scaly lizard with the sharp tongue sticking out of it's narrow head. The scales of it's body gleamed a little from the moonlight as it had just consumed some prey.

Sora's body tensed at the sight as he knew that if this thing woke up, it would be trouble with it's fangs slowly sticking out of it's mouth. Holding his weapon, Sora approached the beast as he laid the torch down on the ground and slowly walked to the creature. Gripping the pipe with his two hands, Sora took a deep breath as he carefully aimed the pipe at the creature's head. He knew the importance of killing Chimeras in one stroke, for if he did not, the creature will do so with ease. Closing his eyes, he swung hard.

Makoto heard the sound of metal meeting flesh as more of that sound repeated. She clenched her body closer to herself as she nervously peeked on the hole. Immediately as she did so, she looked away at the sight and nearly hurled. The sight she saw was a sight that she had not seen for a long time and seeing it again was just sickening for her. It was the sight of a creature, bleeding heavily and was dead. The person who killed the creature, stood in front of it with blood covering his whole body.

The person...was Sora Minakaze.

This didn't help Makoto in her thoughts as it continued to reinforce the ideas that she had about Sora. He was nothing but a killer who has lost all of the hesitation that a human being would have. 'Even against a chimera...he didn't even flinch...' Makoto thought in horror as Sora began to walk around some more. Sora knew he had no choice to kill the Chimera to survive, giving a small prayer to the beast.

Makoto kept her eyes closed while Sora did that as he breathed much more deeper. His eyes then caught sight of a certain tail that was familiar. 'There she is...Just have to get to her...and get the fuck out of here.' Sora thought as he walked to the tail slowly. He had to be quick yet not too aggressive as Makoto was most likely not thinking straight at that moment. That was what he would have liked to do but his eyes then caught a sight of another figure that made him sprint.

Makoto meanwhile heard footsteps charging for her direction. 'Oh no...I'm spotted!' Makoto thought in fear as she stood up and tried to run in the opposite direction but the moment she did so, her eyes landed on a Chimera that looked exactly liked the one Sora had killed. She stumbled back, landing on her bum due to the shock as she started shifting away from the beast. As soon as the beast leaped for her, Makoto closed her eyes out of shock.

Sora meanwhile, saw this and was going to help... until he got kicked into a pile of stalagmites. This sudden action shocked him as he struggled to stand. Makoto meanwhile did not dare to open her eyes as she waited for the beast's approach. She didn't have to wait for much longer as a hand placed itself gently on her shoulders. "Makoto...Makoto, it's me." a voice said gently as her eyes opened and to her relief, it was not Sora Minakaze but a man with crimson hair.

"Hunter! Oh thank god you're here!" Makoto cried out in relief as she hugged him for relief. Her mind was going through so much at that moment, so being able to hug a friend is more than enough for her. Hunter hugged her back as Makoto for a moment realized that he was hugging her, causing a light blush as she broke it immediately. "How did you find me in here!?" Makoto asked as Hunter released his hug as well. "Well...seeing you jump out of a window is hint enough, then I see Sora jumping out of the same window to give chase after you... that is really suspicious." Hunter explained as Makoto felt more relief...then instant panic engulfed her as Sora emerged from the stalagmites.

"OW...What are you doing here Hunter? And what was with the kick!?" Sora asked as immediately Hunter heard his voice, his stance changed visibly in front of Makoto's eyes. He adopted an aggressive position, covering more of Makoto's body and puffing his chest out a bit. "What were you doing chasing after Makoto like that...And what is with the blood on your body!" Hunter questioned as Sora immediately looked at Hunter's posture and adapted a less aggressive position.

"Hey...Now is not the time for questions alright... let's just get the hell out of here first..." Sora tried to reason with however Hunter thought otherwise as He instead puffed his chest out even more as an intimidation factor. "Look...I don't know what you are trying to pull off here... But until you explain what you were doing to Makoto, we aren't going anywhere." Hunter said as Sora got ready to explain himself. But much to his bad luck, Makoto began to stare at him more intently, fear grasping her eyes. As she muttered word after word with those eyes, Hunter could only turn back to his friend as she yelled from the top of her lungs, the words that have been choking her greatly.

Makoto: N-No...Stay away...STAY AWAY!

Hunter: !? What!? Makoto what's wrong!

Makoto: HUNTER PLEASE! YOU HAVE TO PROTECT ME! SORA! SORA!

Hunter: ! What did Sora try to do you Makoto...TELL ME!

Makoto: I...I...HE...HE KILLED THEM

Hunter: !...Killed...

Makoto: He...HE KILLED THOSE PEOPLE!

Sora: Huh!? M-Makoto...what are you...

Makoto:...Then...Then!...HE TRIED TO KILL ME!

The moment Sora heard those words, his brain began to think of the various memories that could be associated with the words she had used. "Makoto...Please...What do you mean..." Sora asked but fear had grasped her heart greatly as she shook badly on the spot. "...Stay away...STAY AWAY FROM ME YOU MONSTER!" The moment she shouted that word, Sora became quiet. His heart was scarred heavily emotionally from Makoto's careless use of words as he closed his eyes to try understanding what was going on.

Hunter on the other hand did not make it easy for him to do so, "Sora...is it true what she said... TELL ME!" Hunter shouted at the last moment as Sora continued to chose the silent route. "You not going to talk?...SO YOU ACCEPT WHAT MAKOTO SAID IS TRUE! THAT YOU ARE A KILLER AND YOU TRIED TO MURDER HER ONCE IN HER LIFETIME!" Hunter shouted as Sora closed his eyes harder to think.

"HUNTER! I AM NOT..." Sora tried to speak but unfortunately for him, Hunter drew to his mistaken conclusion a long time ago as Makoto and Sora finally noticed the object that he was holding in his hand, snap at Sora. Sora was stunned to see the object for the first time as it looked like an entire head of a black dragon with red runic marks all over it resembling scales. The maw of the head slowly opened as a thin red blade, reminiscent of a zweihandler shot of out it. It too had runic marks as Hunter stared at him in the eyes.

"I have heard enough from you... You are obviously a threat to everyone around you. To protect everyone I love...even if it means...becoming one of them... I WON'T LET YOU HARM MY FRIENDS!" Hunter shouted as he stood in front of Makoto, Sora finally seeing that there is no way to reason with him right now. But he was not the focus right now, he and his misguided good intentions were not the thing he was focusing right now. Sora's eyes were focused on Makoto and her fearful expression.

Sora knew there was no way that he was going to get through Hunter right now, with the situation right now being this tense, negotiations were done. Clenching tightly on the bloody pipe, he closed his eyes hoping for an answer to what he should be doing right now. 'What do I do...What do I do!' Sora thought as Hunter looked at Makoto softening his expression, looked at Makoto. He touched her shoulder gently as he whispered to her, "Makoto...hide somewhere safe, I promise I will get you back when I am done with him." Hunter said as Makoto nodded her head and crawled away to hide.

As she did so, Hunter slowly walked down to the arena, the night sky illuminating the darkness that is present in the area. The moonlight shined to the dark area as Sora looked forward. "Hunter...please...we don't need to fight right now... I don't want to hurt you." Sora said but Hunter did not flinch in his resolve. "Don't want to hurt me huh... Then tell me this Sora Minakaze... What was with you that day in the arena! You fought as if you were trying to kill me that day!" Hunter shouted as Sora looked even more confused.

Quickly shaking his head, Sora decided he had no time to dwell on what happened without his idea. All he knew was that he had to stop Hunter, by knocking him out most likely, then try to convince Makoto to follow him and bring the two back to the surface, without much injury. "...I don't know what you are talking about Hunter...and honestly it doesn't concern me right now. What I know is that there is no time for me to waste right now." Sora said as he readied himself to attack.

Sora took a deep breath as he closed his eyes. He knew this would be a dificult battle as he had fought him before. This will not be easy at all and he was prepared to fight him this time.
