A/N: Here's another chapter and as predicted I did absolutely nothing today except write haha. Hope you like it and please review and tell me what you think :)
To her the day had dragged on much too long and she was thankful to be home. Lauren had decided that she wanted to play catch so while she changed into some suitable clothes Jenny took the time to call Heather. They chatted about everything that's been going on lately including the kiss that Jenny and Jethro shared. Heather liked that very much, so much in fact that Jenny had to pull the phone away from her ear. They even talked about when they were going to get the custody hearing moving along and decided that this weekend would be the perfect time to sort everything out. However before they could finish talking about the custody situation Lauren walked into the room with a pair of jeans and a dark red tee shirt on. As Jenny was getting off the phone with her sister Lauren jumped onto Jenny's bed and sat cross legged, looking expectantly at her mom. Jenny raised an eyebrow. "Are you ready?" Lauren asked and Jenny looked down at herself. She was definitely not ready. All she had managed to do since getting home was slide out of her heels. Sighing she looked at her daughter.
"Do I look ready sweetheart?" Giggling, Lauren shook her head as she set her small softball glove on top of her lap. As Jenny slipped out of her work clothes she found an old tee shirt to wear but no pants. Sighing she dug through her closet and found, to her dismay, a tattered pair of overalls. "Oh God." She muttered under her breath, holding them up in front of herself. She hadn't worn a pair of overalls since the mid '90's. They had a hole on the right pant leg and were fraying at the knees. Sighing she accepted her fate and slipped them on, thankful that they still fit.
"You look like a farmer mommy!" Lauren said examining them and Jenny sighed.
"I know kiddo, I know." She said before turning to Lauren. "But it's all I have so let's go!" She exclaimed ushering the curly red head out of the room and down the stairs.
. . .
When they made it to the park Jenny had already decided that she wasn't going to use her glove, mostly because it didn't fit over her cast. So as they played Jenny caught the ball and threw it back with the same hand. It wasn't like the balls were flying at her very fast anyway. "Did you ever play baseball mommy?" Lauren asked as she threw the ball to Jenny who smiled.
"Yeah I did." She supplied as she tossed the ball back. Lauren's whole face lit up when she said that and it made Jenny smile.
"What position did you play?" She asked before running to get the ball she missed.
"I was the pitcher, and sometimes right field." She supplied and Lauren beamed proudly.
"I'm gonna be a pitcher someday too." Lauren declared before tossing the ball back. Jenny chuckled.
"You are huh? Well we better practice then." Jenny said as she squatted down in a professional looking catcher's position knowing it would make Lauren feel good about her pitching skills. "Show me what you got hot shot." She dared, tossing the ball to Lauren who looked extremely determined to show Jenny how amazing she was. For her first pitch she threw it overhand and it soared over Jenny's head, thankfully she quickly stood up and caught it. Looking very sheepish, Lauren frowned as Jenny walked over to her. "A little high honey." She joked and Lauren glared at her. Biting her lip Jenny quickly thought of something more encouraging to say. "Don't worry about it, everybody makes mistakes. Try again except this time, try tossing it underhand." Jenny said setting the ball gently into Lauren's glove. Nodding, the little girl smiled as Jenny walked back to her spot and squatted down again. Her toss was extremely low and off to the side but it was better than the first one, and that called for celebration. Lauren was beaming as Jenny nodded approvingly and tossed it back. "That was great! Now every time you do it you'll get a little better. Then later, you'll be the best pitcher in town." Jenny encouraged and Lauren beamed. Jenny helped her with her pitching some more before it started to get dark. Then they decided to go home before stopping at Jenny's favorite coffee shop for some celebratory lemonade. She was just thankful that nobody had seen her in her now also grass stained overalls. However she spoke too soon. As they walked in she spotted Jethro at the counter. This was his favorite coffee shop too but she was hoping that he wasn't going to be there at the exact same time that she was. In fact, she wanted to know those odds. Jenny had Lauren on her hip and she hadn't spotted him yet since she was busy fidgeting with Jenny's overalls. In a snap decision she decided to pretend that she didn't see him and let him find her. That way she could have a minute to get used to the fact that he was going to see her in overalls of all things. Then again he had seen her with nothing on at all, but that was a different matter entirely and a long, long time ago, a lifetime ago. He didn't spot them until they were at the counter and he was just turning to leave. Lauren's face lit up and Jenny smiled as he looked her over.
"Hey Lauren." He greeted, kissing her on the temple then turning to Jenny. "Overalls." He said with a smirk and she let Lauren down with a sigh.
"Do you have a problem with overalls?" She asked placing her hands on her hips, as if daring him to disagree with her. He raised his eyebrows and shook his head.
"No, just a little surprised to see you in them." He supplied and she glared at him before turning to Lauren. "Ready to order?" She asked and Lauren nodded. Lauren ordered pink lemonade and Jenny ordered raspberry lemonade. And instead of leaving, Gibbs joined them at a table to drink their lemonade and in his case: coffee. Lauren explained their afternoon and how Jenny taught Lauren how to pitch. She even mentioned how she was going to be just like her mom when she grew up, Jenny blushed. They sat quietly at the table sipping their drinks when Jethro finally could resist anymore and leaned over.
"What's with the overalls?" Jenny sighed and turned to face him.
"I didn't have any more pants left okay, I forgot to do laundry." She supplied and he chuckled. Leaning in closer he whispered in her ear:
"I think they're cute." Before kissing her cheek next to her ear. A million things were running through her mind and she tried to keep from smiling as she looked him over carefully.
"What are you guys whispering about?" Lauren asked swinging her legs under the table.
"Nothing." Jenny supplied still looking at Gibbs before slowly turning to Lauren who pouted.
"Why can't you tell me? I won't tell anyone, I promise!" She exclaimed zipping up her mouth and throwing away the key. The two adults chuckled.
"Sorry kiddo it's adult stuff." Jethro said and Lauren furrowed her brow but let it ride.
. . .
A few days later after a serious talking to with the SecNav about Lauren, Jenny talked to Claire and convinced her to babysit Lauren during the week until they found a new daycare. Plus Lauren would get to have a playdate with William every day. It was a win-win situation. And though she knew it was better for everybody since the team concentrated on their work more and the SecNav wasn't breathing down her neck anymore she still missed seeing Lauren all day and she wondered how she had survived for the last five years not seeing her daughter for months at a time. It didn't matter, she was glad that Lauren was here now and hopefully would be for the rest of her life. Well at least until she turned 18. Sighing, Jenny decided that it was time for lunch. As she made her way to the elevator near the bull pen she suddenly found Jethro at her side. As he smiled at her she realized that she needed to sort some things out with him, mainly the PDA that has been going on, especially since they weren't together. As the doors shut around them and the elevator started going down she reached over him and pressed the emergency stop button. Immediately the elevator was flooded with blue light. He looked at her curiously. "We need to talk." She stated and he raised an eyebrow.
"Bout what?" He asked and she could tell he was confused.
"What's happening…with us." She stated and he cocked his head at her but didn't say anything. "I mean come on Gibbs look at us. Ever since Lauren's been in the picture we've been turning into the people we were before her." She said referring to the jokes, laughing and all the silly things they'd do to each other. Not to mention all the inconspicuous intimate touches.
"Is that a bad thing?" He asked and she took a deep breath.
"You're not getting my point."
"Obviously not." He retorted calmly and she glared at him.
"What I'm trying to say is that this isn't like us. We're different now and I don't want all of…whatever this is…to be some illusion." She explained looking at him carefully, hoping to gauge his reaction.
"Why wouldn't it be real?" He asked curtly. She sighed.
"I don't know, maybe it was brought on because we were blinded by Lauren and misguided by the results of the paternity test. I mean just because you're her father it doesn't automatically mean that we have to be a couple. Jethro if this is real why wasn't all of this happening before Lauren came?" She asked furrowing her brow and he sighed, shifting his weight around.
"Because you said no off the job." He reminded her and she nodded.
"And it still stands, maybe even more so than before. I just can't afford to hurt Lauren like that if anything were to go south with us. Let's face it; we didn't work very well last time." He raised his eyebrows in mild shock.
"Because you left!" He exclaimed and she rolled her eyes.
"I wonder why?" She shot back icily, almost immediately regretting it. Taking a deep breath she calmed herself. "I'm just saying that I don't know if…us…is such a good idea." She said fiddling with her purse as she looked up at him. He sighed.
"But I missed you Jen." He admitted and she took a deep breath, staring at him. "Look me in the eyes and tell me that you didn't miss me too." He dared her and she bit her lip hesitantly.
"I just don't see how-"
"Jen." He said softly, cutting her off. As she looked at him she realized that it was taking all of her restraint to not throw herself at him and crash her lips down onto his which then led her to the truthful answer that Gibbs was looking for.
"I missed you, I missed you so much." She admitted and he smiled before capturing her lips in his. As they kissed her arms went around his neck and his went around her waist, pulling her close. So after all these years of subconsciously missing him, juggling Lauren and trying to find her place she realized that this was where she was supposed to be and smiled as he deepened the kiss.
