At It Again
"Hey Spencer," Quinn half smiled at her sister in law as she came downstairs that evening, tugging the sleeves of her sweatshirt over her hands before crossing her arms. Jason noticed her doing this more, crossing over herself, guarding herself. "I didn't know you were coming over."
"Just bringing brownies," Spencer said as Jason attempted to hide the card. "Stealing a casserole," she said lightly. Quinn nodded.
"Those are pretty," Quinn commented, noticing the flowers on the counter. While Jason hid the card he clearly couldn't get them out of the room in time. "When did we get those?"
"I got them," Jason lied and she looked at him curiously; she assumed they showed up with one of their many casseroles and sympathy desserts. "This afternoon, while you were laying down."
"Oh," she gave a small smile, kissing him once. "Well, thank you. That was sweet." She picked the flowers up off the counter and moved them over to sit on the table. "They're so pretty," she said again, admiring them. Jason felt uncomfortable that A's flowers were sitting on the middle of their table. "Are you sure everything is ok Jay?"
"Yeah," Jason nodded quickly. "Yeah, just...all this stuff." He wished he hadn't said that, he had been trying to put on a brave face for her and act as though he wasn't worried. It was better than admitting the truth though.
"Yeah," Quinn sighed in agreement. "Spence, can I talk to Jason for a minute?"
"Yeah!" Spencer nodded, maybe a little to quickly. "Yeah, I have to get home anyway," she said now, grabbing the food Jason gave her.
"Let me know when you get there," Jason told her now.
"I will," Spencer promised, heading out the door. Quinn sighed heavily, taking at seat at the counter next to him.
"What's wrong?" Jason asked gently, resting his hand over hers. Other than the obvious, he silently thought.
"We just got back to not needing to know when everyone got someplace," Quinn reminded him. When everything was at it's height in the A terrorizing days they wanted to know where everyone was, to know they were safe by keeping tabs on all the girls.
"I know," Jason sighed in agreement, giving her hand a light squeeze. "What else are you thinking about?"
"It just never ends," Quinn said in exasperation. "You know, Alison goes missing and there was A. Who was my sister. Then, it stopped. Then my sister comes home, then it starts again. Then, it stops. After she tried to kill me," she tacked on cynically. "Before killing herself."
"Baby, I know," Jason said sadly.
"Then it was Wilden and Garrett got killed," Quinn continued. "You went to jail before Wilden confessed to killing him and your sister." She motioned to the door though Alison wasn't home yet. "Who is clearly still alive."
"Quinn," Jason tried to stop her from ranting and she got up from her seat to pace.
"Then," she emphasized. "Alison was still alive and we start getting messages again. Assuming it's from your mom, who's in prison, but she's still standing by her I'm a good mom thing," she rolled her eyes. "And then it was quiet. All was fine then," she said, her eyes starting to tear up.
"Quinn," Jason said again, coming over to her.
"Then, someone kills Melissa," Quinn finished. "And our baby." She bit her lip, blinking the tears away. "And I think it's the same as the last person that was A, I don't think it was your mom Jason."
"What are you talking about?" Jason asked in confusion. "Alison saw my mom trying to bury her. The last A was trying to keep what happened to Ali a secret."
"Fine, your mom was burying her alive," Quinn agreed with him. "But what if she was covering for someone." She motioned to the flowers. "I know those aren't from you Jay, you haven't left the house all day. I can't sleep, and I just listen to you pacing down here, listening to everyone that comes in and out of this house. None of them brought flowers." Jason was silent. "Who are they from Jason?" He handed her the card silently. "Nice," she said, crumbling the card and tossing it to the side.
"We're going to have to go to the cops this time," Jason told her seriously. "No trying to get ahead of it, no fighting to keep our secrets. We're going straight to the police."
"Fine," Quinn agreed. "Because I think I know who A is."
"Who?" Jason questioned curiously.
"Where was Alison during the party?" Quinn asked back. Jason sighed, rubbing his forehead. "She hated Melissa, she always has, ever since Ian-"
"You think enough to kill her?" Jason asked like she was crazy.
"Your sister hid out of town for two years Jason," Quinn reminded him. "And in that time we were caught in this mess of lies that she left. We don't even know who she is anymore and she's acting sketchier than ever." Jason didn't say anything. "Where was she during the party Jason?"
"Where was Wren?" Jason countered and Quinn made a face.
"You think Wren killed his fiancee?" Quinn questioned.
"You think Alison killed a girl she had a fight over a guy with how many years ago?" Jason asked back.
"Then, ask her where she was," Quinn said now. "Tonight, whenever she gets home from wherever she's gone, ask her what she's been doing."
"Fine," Jason agreed, giving in to her.
Quinn and Jason tried to stay up until Alison got home. They ended up falling asleep on the couch, with Quinn telling Hanna to just stay at Caleb's that night. There was no need to have a bigger audience for the confrontation once Ali got home. However, Alison ended up not making it back until the following morning, her closing the door waking up both Jason and Quinn.
"Did I miss the slumber party?" Alison asked sarcastically, heading upstairs for her room. Jason got up and caught her on the stairs, stopping her. The more he thought about it, the more he wanted answers.
"Where were you last night Al?" Jason questioned her.
"Are you my babysitter now?" she asked. "I'm twenty-two years old," she pointed out.
"And there's a killer out there again," he emphasized. "Or, have you forgotten what it's like to be a target?"
"I don't need this," Alison told him, rolling her eyes. "I'm going to start staying at Emily's."
"Where were you during the party Alison?" Jason asked at her back; she froze on the stairs, turning around.
"Excuse me?" Alison asked him.
"Where. Were. You," he broke it down slowly.
"I didn't kill Melissa," Alison said defensively. "And I would never..." She was looking at Quinn when she said it. "It wasn't me."
"Then where were you?" Jason insisted. "Other than showing up for the party after Melissa and Quinn were attacked?" Alison still wouldn't answer and felt lucky to be interrupted by a knock at the door. She didn't realize how unlucky it was about to make her though, how guilty she was going to look.
"Hey Toby," Jason said as he answered the door. "What are you doing here?" he asked, seeing him in uniform. He hoped Quinn wasn't going to have to give another statement.
"I'm really sorry to be doing this," Toby said sympathetically. "Can I come in?"
"Yeah," Jason nodded, opening the door wider.
"What's going on Toby?" Quinn asked as he came over into the living room with her, Jason coming as well, Alison watching from the stairs.
"Did you know your dad was back in town?" Toby asked now and Jason looked confused.
"No," Jason shook his head.
"We think he just got in last night, his bag wasn't even unpacked," Toby continued. "They found him in his hotel room this morning."
"Oh my God," Quinn gasped, covering her mouth in shock.
"It, um, gets worse," Toby continued.
"How?" Jason questioned and Toby handed him a picture from the crime scene. On the wall in marker over where the body was found was the phrase "I'm Back - A."
"Spencer called me last night, worried about the note you guys got," he explained. "Leading me to believe both incidents are related." He looked to the stairs. "You're gonna have to come with me Alison."
"What, why?" Alison demanded.
"We looked at your dad's cell phone records," Toby said now, coming over to get her. "He texted you last night to see if you wanted to get dinner."
"Ali," Jason said seriously.
"I didn't do it," Alison insisted as she was leaving the house with Toby. "Jason, I didn't!"
