A Very Merry Christmas

"Sleigh bells ring are you listening. In the lanes, snow is glistening. A beautiful sight. We're happy tonight. Walking in a Winter Wonderland… walking, in a winter, wonderland." The words of her favourite Christmas carol tumbled out of her mouth as she looked out of the window in the Gryffindor tower, her knees were tucked tightly to her chest and she cradled a mug of hot chocolate in her hands. Her presents were unwrapped and left neatly near the large Christmas tree in the middle of the Common room, her gifts had been lovely but the one she cherished most was the large chocolate coloured throw she currently had thrown over her shoulder, it had been from Draco, a gift she hadn't been expecting but was deeply grateful for, the throw hadn't come alone and she had also received a few bags of peppermint toads and a sugar quill lollipop, they were two of her favourite sweets from home and the reminder had made her incredibly home sick. Every Christmas day she had celebrated with her family, whether that be Muggle or Wizarding she had been surrounded by people she loved and who loved her, even while they had been on the run her and Harry had been together but now all that was gone. Harry was dead and the Weasley's, though alive in this time period did not know her, the twins would be due in the spring bringing the family to five boys. Her parents were alive and well and had recently met a few months prior, this would have been their first Christmas as a couple, in a couple more years they'd be married and have a dentistry and a daughter. She hadn't been planned, but she had been adored and cherished by her parents, parents she missed very dearly.

Hermione pulled the throw tighter round her as she stood, the mug of hot chocolate was left on the side and she padded softly towards her other gifts, a collection of winter clothing, sweets and books laid on the floor alongside a beautiful black photo book from Lily, unknown to her Lily had gone through the year taking pictures of her. There was a page dedicated to just her and Draco at the ball, another of just her and Lily and then another with her and Marauders. She slowly stroked the faces of Lily and James in one picture, and a tear trickled down her cheek. It was cruel that she had been allowed to spend so much time with Lily and James and Harry hadn't, cruel that she wouldn't be able to return home and be able to show Harry all these beautiful memories.

As she turned a page she stopped and smiled amused at what she saw, she had somehow been caught with Draco, Narcissa and Lucius and in the library. She had her nose in a book and as she watched herself she finally understood what others had meant when they had told her she had her nose so deep in a book. Draco and Lucius looked so alike it was creepy and Narcissa was already showing the signs that she would soon be the lady of the house. It looked like she had been fully accepted as a future Malfoy and could only wish she'd had this picture several years ago to rub in their faces.

She continued to look at the pictures in the photo album smiling at all the memories that resurfaced from them. As she reached the end she held the book tightly to her chest, she'd made great friends here and for that she could smile, they may not have been the friends she had at home but they were still friends. She looked at the book and knew when it was finally time for her to go she give it to Lily to hold on to until they met again, then she could tell her all about these amazing memories that she had experienced, and what she and Draco had done.

Feeling a happy warmth in her stomach she collected all her gifts in her arms and trundled upstairs, she left them on her bed and quickly changed, her friends may not be here with her but there was someone in 1977 that was still very dear to her. She wrapped the scarf from Remus around her neck and pulled on the woollen gloves from Alice and walked down the stairs. She didn't know where Draco was but she had an idea.

Her feet crunched on the snow as she walked towards the Quidditch Pitch, it was freezing outside and the wind was bitterly cold. It didn't take long for her nose and cheeks to turn red. She tucked her gloved hands in to her armpits and quickened her pace.

As she stepped into the school Quidditch stands she spotted Draco instantly and her heart dropped in to her stomach as he twirled in the sky. How wasn't he cold? She cleared a patch of snow off a bench and heated it with a quick spell before she sat down and studied him. He was an excellent flyer, he had natural grace and precision and his lean frame was easy on the eyes.

She was too far away to see the concentration on his face and the way his jaw locked as he flew. The wind blew his pale hair in his eyes and as he pushed it from his eyes he finally locked on to Hermione seated in the Quidditch stands. With a grin he flew down to meet her.

She smiled as he neared her waving as he approached. "Hey you," he said as he finally stopped in front of her.

"Hey yourself,"

"Merry Christmas Beautiful, get everything you hoped for?" he asked.

"Almost," she said with a smirk, Draco frowned but his frown quickly changed to delight as Hermione pushed herself from her seat and slammed her mouth on to his, they fought for dominance before Draco allowed her the victory.

"Now I did," she said as she pulled away, "by the way Merry Christmas yourself and thank you for my lovely Christmas presents,"

"You are very much welcome and thank you for mine, I love them." He pulled the collar of his coat down for Hermione to see the scarf she had bought him. "So what brings you down to the Quidditch Pitch on this cold Christmas morning?"

"Well it certainly wasn't to get on a broomstick, but I wanted to see you and this was the first place I thought to look."

"Well as much as I am moved by this, I'd love to see you on a broomstick." Hermione was already shaking her head but Draco knew away around it. He had mastered the wounded puppy look as a toddler and his eyes had made many women other the years give into him.

"You cannot be serious, you know I hate flying!"

"All the more for you to give it ago, you've conquered mythical beasts, dark wizards and grief and have risen above it all but your telling me the smartest witch I know can't get on a bit of wood? You've only a few more months of your life to go before all this is over don't you want to look back and be proud that you conquered your fear of flying?"

It was annoying how Draco's words made so much sense, even more frustrating was the fact that she knew he knew his words had gotten to her.

"Damn you Malfoy!" she grunted and Draco grinned.

"Don't worry, you can fly with me. You'll be in control but I'll be right behind you so nothing happens."

It was a compromise she was happy with, no way did she want to be on a broom by herself and she trusted Draco. She accepted his offered hand and carefully climbed on to the front of the broom. She could already feel her anxiety rise, and she wanted to get off, but as Draco wrapped his arms around her frame and placed her hands in the correct position on the broom she slowly started to relax, with a small push of his feet Draco elevated them off the stand.

"Don't like this," she said as she clenched her eyes shut.

"Try and relax and Hermione…"

"Yeah?"

"Open your eyes."

"Oh,"

"When you can see where you are going it'll make it far less scary," Hermione nodded and slowly opened her eyes, she could feel the extra warmth of Draco's hands on top of hers and the heat from his stomach and chest on her back.

"So what exactly do I have to do?" she asked as she looked straight ahead, she didn't even want to think about looking down.

"Keep a firm grip on the broom and just lean your body ever so slightly in the way you want to go," he said and Hermione nodded, she lent forwards ever so slightly and the broom started to move, her breath hitched in her throat but she took a deep breath and continued to go straight. "Now twist your hands to the right and put some of your body weight in the direction and the broom will turn," Hermione nodded and did as instructed and the broom turned softly.

"I'm flying!" she said excitedly and Draco nodded.

"You are," they circled the Quidditch field once at the same speed before Draco decided she was ready to go a little faster, he pushed his weight further on to Hermione's back pushing her lower and the broom started to pick up a bit more speed.

"Draco…"

"It's okay, I'll let nothing bad happen to you!" Hermione nodded and slowly the nerves once again began to fade. She was becoming more and more comfortable that she didn't realise when Draco removed his hands from on top of hers and placed them behind him. She was completely in control of the broom and Draco was her passenger. She may have not noticed this achievement but Draco had and it was something he would store in his mind for darker days, for when he too believed he wouldn't be able to accomplish something. In his eyes Hermione Granger was a true inspiration.
