Prompt: Kat passes out of because of the heat.
Age: 15
Kat glanced up at the sun behind her sunglasses, lowly cursing at it. It was one of the reasons why she didn't really the summers. Days will get hot and uncomfortable. Today wouldn't been that bad…if the power didn't keep going off at the apartment. Not just the apartment but the whole goddam building.
She decided to visit the precinct, hoping that the power didn't go out there. Knowing that they had air conditioner, Kat hurried her steps. She could feel the sweat on her back, making the back of her tank top stick to her body. Luckily her open plaid shirt was drenched in sweat but her shorts were beginning to cling to her as well. She wiped the beads of sweat from her forehead as she continued to walk down the sidewalk.
A couple of more minutes walking and she almost danced in joy when she saw the precinct building. When she walked in the building, it felt like heaven. She sighed in relief the moment the cool air hit her face. She quickly rushed to the open elevator and pushed the button to the floor where her mother was in.
She took of her sunglasses and clutched them in her hand. She could feel the pounding in her head; a headache was begging to start. Kat could still feel the sweat on her back and how hot her face felt. Not just her face but the top of her head as well. When the elevator doors opened, she walked out with two more cops. She then got an idea.
She tapped one of the young officers on his shoulder. He turned to glance who tapped him and smiled politely. The other cop stopped walking. He glanced curiously as to why his partner stopped walking.
"How may I help you, miss?" The dark skinned officer asked.
Kat grinned, ignoring her headache. "Can you help me with something?"
"Sure."
"My mom is a detective in this unit and I was wondering if you can help me play a small prank on her?"
The other officer heard what Kat said and he smirked. "Who's your mom?"
"Detective Benson."
Both of their eyes widen. The first officer composed himself but a small smile appeared on his face. "And what prank did you have in mind?"
"So you will help me?"
"Hells yea we will!" the other officer walked next to her. "What do we do?"
Kat smirked.
Olivia closed one of the drawers on her desk, pulling out two folders. She placed them on top of her desk and yawned. Elliot and Fin went to visit Melinda, since she found something new for their case. She was about to open one of them when she recognize her daughter's voice.
"I didn't mean to!" Kat gritted through her teeth. She pretended to struggle out of the two officers' grasps on her arms. "Can we all just pretend it didn't happen?"
The dark skinned cop scoffed. "No we can't."
"Kat!" Olivia stood from her chair and walked to the trio.
The other officer glanced at the detective. "She your kid, detective?"
"She is," Olivia glanced at her daughter. She could see that the teen was sweating. "What happened?"
The first officer started to 'explain'. "She punched a woman in a convenience store not far from here. Apparently, your daughter threw a water bottle to the woman. She was able hit her in the face and caused the woman's nose to bleed."
"You did what!?" Liv stared at the teen in shock.
"It was her fault!" Kat slightly stomped her foot like she used to when she was a child. "The bitch started saying shit to me."
"And you think throwing a water bottle at her will solve anything?"
"Yeah."
Liv closed her eyes and pinched her nose. She heard her daughter laughing and opened her eyes. Not only was her daughter giggling but the officers were grinning as well. The detective rolled her eyes, "Kathryn Benson, I swear—"
"You should have seen your face," Kat continued to laugh, while she let one of the officers uncuffed her hands. "Wish I had taken a picture."
The two officers patted Kat on the back. "Hope to see you again."
Kat nodded at them before they left. She turned back to look at her mother. She frowned when she saw a smirk on her mother's face. She knew what that smirk meant. "You're going to get me back for that, aren't you?"
"You bet," Liv said.
The teen groaned. "I'm in for it now."
Olivia chuckled and pulled her daughter in a side hug. She frowned in concern when she felt how wet her daughter's back felt. "Is this all sweat?"
"It's blazing hot outside. Even the goddam wind is hot," Kat grumbled. "The power went out of the whole building and this was the first place that came to my mind for air conditioning."
"Good thing that you came here. Do you want to me to go home and bring you a new tank?"
"Na, I'm good," Kat sat on the chair next to her mother's desk. Her mother followed suit, sitting on the rolling chair behind her desk.
She dropped her head on the desk with a soft thunk. She groaned at how cool the wood felt against her forehead. It slightly helped her headache lessen. She felt a hand on her hair but it was gone in a flash. Kat heard her mother gasp and she slowly shifted her head so the right side of her face was resting against the wooden desk. She could see a shock and worried expression on the detective's face.
"What?" Kat mumbled tiredly.
Olivia placed the back of her hand against her daughter's forehead and her eyes widen slightly. "You're burning hot!"
"Because of the fucken sun."
"Language," Olivia sternly said. "I'm going to get you a small wet towel so it can help you cool down."
Kat sat up but regretted at the sudden dizziness she felt. "I'll just go to the restroom and wash my face with cold water."
Olivia shook her head, standing up from behind her desk. "I want you to stay here and try to cool off."
"Mom seriously no big deal. I will just go to the restroom," Kat also stood up. She walked away from the desk when things started to get hazy.
Kat blinked to see if that will controlled the dizziness. She was wrong. She took another step and everything started to get blurry. The teen tried to grasp anything to keep her from losing balance but her hands just met air. She heard her mother yelling her name before she lost consciousness.
Kat groaned and felt something cold on her forehead. She opened her eyes and noticed that she was on her back. She started to get up when she felt a hand on her shoulders pushing her down.
"Don't move. You need to rest," Olivia softly said. She had been sitting next to her daughter for the last couple of minutes. She was able to catch her daughter before the teen fell to the ground. One of the officers in the squad helped Olivia carry Kat to the cribs.
"You scared us for a moment Kat," Cragen gravely said.
"Sorry," Kat rubbed her eyes. She pushed herself up, with the help of her mom and the captain. Her mother took the wet towel from her forehead. "What happened?"
"You passed out because of the heat."
Kat frowned in confusion. "But I was inside the building…"
"I think your body was still too hot from the outside heat," Olivia explained.
Cragen stretched his hand that was holding a plastic cup with water and a few ice cubes to the teen. "Drink. It will help cool down your body."
"Thanks," Kat smiled at him, taking the plastic cup from his hand. She took a sip and almost moaned out loud when she drank the water. She took one of the ice cubes from the cup and started to chew on it. She offered her mom and the captain but they both declined.
"You need it more than us," Liv said, gently resting the back of her hand on her daughter's cheek. "Still a bit too warm."
"I'm feeling a bit better," Kat said, chewing on another ice cube. "I didn't hit the floor right?"
"I was able to catch you."
"Thanks, mom."
Cragen cleared his throat. "Since you are been good taken care of, I will take my leave. Feel better and recover. Understand?"
"Yes, gramps." Kat smirked at him, remembering she would call him that when she stayed with him when her mother went undercover in Oregon.
Cragen chuckled and ruffled her hair.
"Stop," Kat whined, trying to fix her now messy hair.
The captain laughed one more time before walking out of the cribs.
When the door closed behind him, Kat turned to look at her mother. She could see the worry in her eyes. Kat stretched her free hand and grasped her mother's hand that wasn't holding the towel. "Sorry for scaring you."
"You don't need to apologize for that," Olivia shook her head. She moved the towel to Kat's other cheek and gently pressed it down.
"Mom you don't need to do that," Kat motioned to the towel. "I'm doing better. The water and ice cubes are helping a lot."
"I want to speed the process," Liv said.
Seeing the concern on her mother's face, Kat didn't protest any further. Instead she shuffled closer to her mother and continued to drink the water. "Well, my headache is gone. I'm guessing the towel helped with that."
Olivia smiled slightly at her daughter's attempt to lighten the mood in the room. "Yes, it did."
"Do you think that I can stay here? Until your shift is over?" Kat glanced at her mother with hopeful eyes.
Olivia ran her fingers on her daughter's hair. She mentally sighed in relief when she felt that the teen's head wasn't hot anymore when she touched it before. "Did you actually think that I will let you walk out of this precinct after you fainted for been outside in this hot weather? And the apartment building without any power?"
Kat smirk. "Nope. But I still wanted to ask."
"And I will stay here by your side until I think that are all better."
"Am I?"
"Not yet," Liv kissed the top of her daughter's head.
"Didn't think so either." Kat smiled, hugging her mother. "But don't you have to back to work, though?"
"You need me more. The others can take care of it."
Kat hummed and close her eyes, inhaling the coffee aroma that her mother somehow always had with her.
Olivia felt her daughter's body relax and soon heard Kat's breathing deepened, indicating that the teen fell asleep. Olivia gently lay her daughter down on the bed again, shushing Kat when she was about to wake up again. The detective place the wet towel on the teen's forehead and made sure that her daughter looked comfortable while sleeping. Olivia walked to the bed next to her daughter and laid down, facing Kat.
"I'll look after you," Liv whispered, reaching out and grasping her daughter's hand. She saw her daughter faintly smile in her sleep and it brought a smile to the detective.
