Chapter 35: Love is in the Air
I'm in the school's library to do some Duel Puzzle solving. I try again on the hardest puzzles, but they're so hard, I literally thought my brain is burning like crazy. As I am about to give up on this puzzle, I felt someone tapping on my shoulder. I turn around to see a female Obelisk Blue student.
This student has long, bright pink hair that she puts in a red hair band. She also wears a pair of heart-shaped earrings. She sits next to me and said, "My name is Amy Rose, and I'm a second-year in Obelisk Blue. It's very nice to meet you, Sora Fernandez."
"Why are you here?" I ask as if I started to become suspicious of her.
"I came to ask you something." I listen to what she has to say. Amy took a deep breath and said, "I need some advice."
Advice…? I wonder what kind of advice she needs. I hope it's dueling advice.
"How can I get a guy to notice me?" she asks and my mind just went blank.
"Um, what do you mean by that?" I MEAN, SERIOUSLY! I took a look at her body and I admit that her body would get any guys' attention.
Amy explains, "There's this cute boy on the Track Team, he's a second-year as well, and I've been trying to get his attention. But no matter what I do, he always seem to be preoccupied with his team."
I sort of laugh as I try to keep a face that won't hurt her feelings. "Um, I don't have a boyfriend. So why come to me for love advice?"
She answers, "It's because you hang out with the guys, which got me thinking that you might have understand the male's perspective of when they see a girl like me."
That does sound a little helpful for you, but… I look away for a moment and then I ask, "What are the things that you try to get this boy's attention?"
Amy started explaining the things that she has done. Though the things that she has done like clinging onto that said boy's arms would definitely get that guy to act like he's preoccupied with the team. I told her to tone her actions down a bit and try to talk to that boy like how she talk to her friends. I also told her to take things slow and steady by treating that boy as a friend until he wants to be her boyfriend.
"You think that's going to work?" she asks out of concern.
I smile and answer, "You don't know until you try it. Just go for it, okay!" Amy nods her head as she leaves the library. I sigh and spoke to myself, "I hope I give her some good advice."
Then I look around the whole library and saw a bunch of students of different genders sitting next to each other in a lovey-dovey way. I guess today is the season of love or something because all I see around are couples. I started to feel uncomfortable to be in a room where people started to act lovey-dovey to each other as I leave the library.
By the time that I got back to the dorm, I notice Chazz walking towards the harbor. I silently follow him until he stands next to the crates near the lighthouse. He seems to be spying on some people. Since he isn't looking, I quietly sneak up behind him to see whom he's spying on. He's spying on Zane and Alexis, and we're lucky that we're close enough to hear their conversation.
Zane asks, "How's Atticus?"
Alexis happily answers, "He's fine. He's back to being the brother I know and love."
"That's good," said Zane with a smile. "Now I can graduate without any worries." He then sounded sad as if he's being melodramatic, though not as bad as Syrus's melodrama. "I'll miss you… And Atticus too."
"Thank you, Zane," Alexis replies, "You've been a big help."
Zane ends the conversation by saying, "Take care of Atticus." He left the area, leaving Alexis alone to stare at the ocean.
I notice Chazz is sad to see this scene. When I tap him on the shoulder, he jumps in respond as he turns around in surprise. "How long have you been there?" he asks. "Get out of here!"
I stand my ground, which irritates him. He later runs away but I chase after him.
I sort of lost Chazz during the chase and I end up being at the beach for some reason. As I look around to find Chazz, I saw Mindy and Jasmine cheering at Atticus who's surfing again.
"What a hunk!" Jasmine squeals like a fan girl.
Mindy calls out to Atticus who just finish his surfing. "Can I have your autograph?" she asks.
But Atticus asks them a question. "What can you ladies see?" They told him that they see is the ocean and sky, but they were close. Until Mindy points at him and he exclaims, "Bingo!"
"So cool!" the two girls squeals.
What a player! I thought as I rolled my eyes. I really hate guys who just hit on girls like that.
Atticus notices me as he said, "Sora! You're here!"
I wave at Atticus. "Hey there! If you're asking me about your request, I'm still waiting for the materials to be delivered."
He shook his head. "No, I want to duel you."
"Huh?" I gasped. "You want to duel me?"
He nods his head as he grabs his duel disk and deck from his bag. We both activate our duel disks as Mindy and Jasmine cheers Atticus on.

Atticus's Life Points: 4000
I start off the duel as I draw a card from my deck. "I summon Gearfried the Iron Knight in attack mode!" I said as a male warrior wearing black iron armor who wields an arm-sword on his right arm and shield on his left arm appears in front of me.
Gearfried the Iron Knight: Level 4, Earth
ATK: 1800 DEF: 1600
"I end my turn with one card facedown," I said as a card appears behind my knight.
Atticus draws a card from his deck. "I activate the spell, Stray Lambs to summon two Lamb Tokens in defense mode!" The two lambs, one pink and one white, appear in front of him.
Lamb Token: Level 1, Earth
ATK: 0 DEF: 0
"I end my turn with two cards facedown," he said as two cards appear behind his lambs.
What is he up to? I thought to myself as I draw a card from my deck. "I summon Rose, Warrior of Revenge in attack mode!" A red hair woman appears in front of me. The woman wears a black, skintight outfit and a white scarf around her neck. She also wields a katana as she points it at Atticus and for some reason; I notice that she's emanating a murderous aura.
Rose, Warrior of Revenge: Level 4, Fire
ATK: 1600 DEF: 600
"Now I tuned Gearfried with Rose in order to synchro-summon a monster of destructive power!" Rose transforms into four green rings and Gearfried transforms into four stars inside the rings. A beam of light shoots out of the rings. "Burn everything to ashes! I synchro-summon Red Dragon Archfiend!" The light dies down as Red Dragon Archfiend descends from the sky.
Red Dragon Archfiend: Level 8, Dark
ATK: 3000 DEF: 2000
I order Red Dragon Archfiend to attack the white Lamb Token; however, Atticus activates one of his facedown cards. "I reveal the trap card, Mirror Force!" he said with a smile. "This trap destroys your dragon!"
"I reveal my facedown card!" I declare with a smile of confidence. "Starlight Road! This trap card negates your Mirror Force's effect and destroys it. Also, this trap allows me to summon my ace monster!" A pillar of light destroys an invisible barrier, the trap card, and Stardust Dragon descends from the sky when the light dies down.
Stardust Dragon: Level 8, Wind
ATK: 2500 DEF: 2000
"Now then, where were we? Oh yeah! Red Dragon Archfiend attacks one of your Lamb Tokens!" Red Dragon Archfiend punches the white Lamb Token and when that Lamb Token explodes, the pink Lamb Token got caught in the explosion and dies. "Once Red Dragon Archfiend attacks a monster in defense mode, other monsters in defense mode are destroyed as well! Stardust Dragon attacks your life points directly!" Stardust Dragon fires a white beams from his mouth and hits Atticus.
Atticus's Life Points: 4000 – 2500 = 1500
"I end my turn by placing one card facedown," I said as a card appears behind my two dragons.
Atticus smiles and said, "Great play, Sora! You know, I think I might have fallen for you!"
"Ooooooh!" Both Mindy and Jasmine squeals out of excitement.
Do they really have to act like that? "I really hope you don't," I said out loud as I try to keep a straight face.
Atticus draws a card from his deck. "I pay 800 of my life points to activate Brain Control! Now I can take control of your Red Dragon Archfiend!"
Atticus's Life Points: 1500 – 800 = 700
A pair of hands drags Red Dragon Archfiend to Atticus's side as Atticus declares, "Red Dragon Archfiend attacks your Stardust Dragon!" Red Dragon Archfiend is about to punch Stardust Dragon with his fiery fist.
However, I reveal my facedown card. "I activate the trap card, Scrap-Iron Scarecrow! This trap negates your attack!" A metal scarecrow appears in front Stardust Dragon to absorb the attack.
"I too reveal my facedown card!" said Atticus. "I activate Dust Tornado to destroy your Scrap-Iron Scarecrow!" A huge gust of wind destroys my shield. Red Dragon Archfiend punches Stardust Dragon and my dragon dies.
Sora's Life Points: 4000 – 500 = 3500
"Next I sacrifice Red Dragon Archfiend to summon Cyber Tech Alligator in attack mode and I end my turn!" Cyber Tech Alligator replaces Red Dragon Archfiend as it points its mechanical claw at me.
Cyber Tech Alligator: Level 5, Wind
ATK: 2500 DEF: 1600
"That's a good move!" I complimented. Since Brain Control's effect only last for one turn, sacrificing Red Dragon Archfiend so he won't come back to me.
Atticus did a gentleman's bow and reply, "Thank you for the compliment."
I draw a card from my deck. "I place two cards facedown and I end my turn!" I said as two cards appear in front of me.
"What's wrong?" Atticus asks. "A bad draw?"
I made a sly smile and said, "I'm not telling."
Atticus shrugs as he draws a card from his deck. "I activate Mystical Space Typhoon to destroy one of your facedown cards!" A strong gust of wind destroys the facedown card to my left. "Now Cyber Tech Alligator attacks you directly!" Cyber Tech Alligator charges at me.
I smirk and shouted, "You activated my trap! I reveal Dimensional Wall! This trap transfers the battle damage that I received back to you!"
Atticus gasps as he saw his Cyber Tech Alligator disappears. Then the Alligator appears in front of him and attacks him, which ends the duel.
Atticus's Life Points: 1500 – 2500 = 0
The holograms die down, as Mindy and Jasmine are sad for Atticus's lost. Atticus sighs and said, "I knew this would happen."
"Of course you knew!" I replied. "If we're done here, I'm heading back to my dorm."
Atticus stops me for some reason as he asks, "Can you wait here for a little bit?"
"Why?" I tilted my head.
He waves at me and said, "See you till then!" He quickly leaves the beach, leaving me with Mindy and Jasmine who are looking at me with a shine in their eyes.
"What's wrong with you two?" I ask out of concern.
"How dense are you!" Jasmine exclaims. "A boy is telling you to wait for him as he left the scene."
I tilt my head and I hope they don't come to a ridiculous conclusion about why Atticus left. Then again, these are the girls who keep talking about how cute/hot some guys are.
"It means that he's getting you a gift for you to go out with you," Mindy spoke out loud.
I believe that I'm getting a migraine right now as I massage my temples to get rid of the migraine. "Um, I don't think that's what I get from seeing on how he's acting. I'm pretty sure he has something different in mind."
"Don't be like that, Sora!" said Jasmine as she patted me on the back. Then Mindy remembers something as she tells Jasmine about it. Jasmine gasps as her reaction and they quickly leave the beach area.
Wow, they quickly leave. When it comes to possible romances, they usually won't leave me alone about it.
I try to leave as well; however, my conscience is stopping my legs from moving. It must because of Atticus telling me to wait for him while he's away for some reason. I sigh and decided to sit underneath a tree near the beach to wait for Atticus to come back.
A beautiful sunset shines the ocean in deep orange as if I'm in a romantic scene of a guy confessing his love to a girl in the beach. Usually I'm not into romance too much like Jasmine and Mindy, but I do have a girly side because I too imagined of a guy confessing his love to me in this sort of background scene. I find it quite romantic sometimes.
"Sorry to keep you waiting!" Atticus's voice shouts out. I turned to see Atticus dragging Alexis for some reason.
I smirk and replied, "You took your time."
Alexis looks confused as she asks, "What is it, Atticus? What's going on here? Oh, Sora!" Seems like Alexis notices me standing here.
"You're both great Duelists!" said a smiling Atticus. "Why don't you two duel?"
Alexis rubs her right arm and replies, "I don't feel like it at the moment."
Same here! I agree as I nod my head as my response.
"Don't be like that," Atticus spoke.
"Hold on a minute!" Chazz's voice shouted. We turned to see Chazz stomping towards us as he shouted, "Why are you all arguing!"
"We're not arguing, Chazz," Atticus and I said in unison.
Atticus explains, "I'm just trying to see if Alexis and Sora are perfect for each other."
Alexis and I both blush when we heard that. "W-what are you talking about, Atticus!" Alexis stutters out of embarrassment.
"I agree!" I exclaimed. "We're both girls, you know!" And how many times that I have to say that I'm not a lesbian!
"That's right!" Chazz agrees with my statement. Which makes me remember that Alexis is his crush and she doesn't know about it.
Atticus smirks to see Chazz's reaction as he asks, "Chazz, you want to duel too?"
Chazz becomes silent for a moment until he answers, "Yeah, of course!"
Atticus is happy to hear Chazz's answer. "Okay! Whoever wins gets to go on a date with Alexis."
Alexis and I gasp out of surprise. Comparing him to my brothers, he's worse than my brothers.
My brothers are overprotective of me. I remember this one summer vacation when we're at the beach; a guy is asking me out on a date and my brothers show up and challenges that guy into a game. If that guy wins, he has his date with me; however, if he loses, he must stay away from me or else they make sure he is never seen again. My brothers beat that guy and it is because of that incident, I have to wait till I'm old enough to date someone.
"A-Atticus!" Alexis stutters. "Stop being ridiculous!"
"I agree to the contest!" Chazz exclaims, which shocks Alexis.
"I never said yes!" Alexis and I shouted in unison.
Alexis then lies by saying, "You don't want to go on a date with me. I'm telling you now, I won't be good company."
That's a terrible lie… I have my right hand covering my face after hearing her lie.
Chazz isn't convinced as he said, "I'll take my chances."
Alexis becomes sad when she heard him say that. I sigh as I muttered, "How did I get myself into this situation?" I'm starting to reflect my life here in Duel Academy.
Chazz and I stand in position as we activate our duel disks. Atticus then said, "Alexis! These two are going to give it their all, just for you!"
"That's not true!" I angrily yell at him. I'm dueling Chazz to see if he makes some improvements since our last duel.
"Let's start the duel in love!" Atticus exclaims as the duel begins.
Sora's Life Points: 4000
Chazz's Life Points: 4000
"Ladies first!" I said as I draw a card from my deck. "I summon Queen's Knight in attack mode!" Queen's Knight appears in front of me.
Queen's Knight: Level 4, Light
ATK: 1500 DEF: 1600
"And I end my turn by placing two cards facedown!" Two cards appear behind my Queen's Knight.
Chazz draws a card from his deck. "I set down a monster in defense mode and I end my turn by placing one card facedown," he said as two cards appear in front of him.
I draw a card; however, Chazz activates his facedown card.
He said, "I reveal the trap card, Ojama Trio! This trap summons three Ojama Tokens on your side of the field and they cannot be used for Tribute summons!"
Three small, ugly-looking creatures appear next to Queen's Knight. They wear the same colored speedos, but they're skin color is different; one's yellow, one's black, and one's green.
Ojama Token: Level 2, Light
ATK: 0 DEF: 1000
I scratch my head and wonder why he uses that trap card. "Um, Chazz," I spoke, "you do realized that I have Tuner monsters in my deck, right?"
Chazz gasps, "Crap! I forgot about that!"
"Thanks for giving me more monsters," I said with a happy smile. "I summon Turbo Synchron in attack mode!" A small green robot appears next to yellow Ojama Token.
Turbo Synchron: Level 1, Wind
ATK: 100 DEF: 500
"Now I tuned all of the Ojama Tokens with Turbo Synchron to synchro-summon Black Rose Dragon!" Turbo Rocket transforms into a green ring and the Ojama Tokens transform into six stars inside the rings. A beam of light shoot out of the ring and when the light dies down, Black Rose Dragon descends from the sky as red rose petals are scattered throughout the wind.
Black Rose Dragon: Level 7, Fire
ATK: 2400 DEF: 1800
I order Black Rose Dragon to destroy his facedown monster. Black Rose Dragon using the petals around to attack the facedown monster. The monster is revealed to be Ojama Black.
Ojama Black: Level 2, Light
ATK: 0 DEF: 1000
The petals are able to destroy Ojama Black as I order Queen's Knight to attack Chazz directly. Queen's Knight jumps up in the air and does a diving slash at Chazz, causing him to lose points.
Chazz's Life Points: 4000 – 1500 = 2500
"I end my turn," I said with a smirk.
Chazz gritted his teeth and draws a card from his deck. "I set down a monster in defense mode and I end my turn by placing one card facedown." Two cards appear in front of him.
I guess he didn't make much improvement since our last duel. I draw a card from my deck. "Black Rose Dragon attacks your facedown monster!" I declare as Black Rose Dragon summons vines from the ground to attack the facedown monster. The vines smack at the facedown card to reveal the monster, Marshmallon.
Marshmallon: Level 3, Light
ATK: 300 DEF: 500
I gasp because I remember about Marshmallon's special ability. Marshmallon can't be destroyed in battle and it deals 1000 points of damage to the opponent once it flips face-up through battle. A bright light shines on me and I lose 1000 of my life points.
Sora's Life Points: 4000 – 1000 = 3000
"I end my turn."
Chazz draws a card from his deck. "I sacrifice Marshmallon to summon Armed Dragon!" Marshmallon is replace by Armed Dragon as the red dragon roars.
Armed Dragon Level 5: Level 5, Wind
ATK: 2400 DEF: 1700
"Next I use Level Up on my Armed Dragon!" Armed Dragon grows into its next form and sways its tail around as if I'm its dinner.
Armed Dragon Level 7: Level 7, Wind
ATK: 2800 DEF: 1000
"I activate my Armed Dragon's special ability! By discarding one Monster card from my hand, I can destroy all of your monsters. However, they have to be equal or less than the attack points of the Monster card that I discarded. The Monster card that I discarded has 2500 attack points!"
Armed Dragon summons two laser chainsaws from its belly. The dragon tosses the chainsaws at my Black Rose Dragon and Queen's Knight, which kills them. With my field being empty, Chazz orders his Armed Dragon to attack me. Armed Dragon punches me, causing me to be on the verge of losing.
Sora's Life Points: 3000 – 2800 = 200
Chazz laughs. "That's right! Kneel before the almighty Chazz! Turn ended!"
"Sora! Are you okay?" Alexis asks out of concern.
"I'm fine! Don't worry about me!" I answer as I draw a card from my deck. "I summon Junk Synchron in attack mode!" Junk Synchron appears in front of me.
Junk Synchron: Level 3, Dark
ATK: 1300 DEF: 500
"Junk Synchron's special ability activates! Once he's summoned, I can revived Turbo Synchron in defense mode!" Turbo Synchron appears next to Junk Synchron. "Next I activate Monster Reborn to revive Queen's Knight!" Queen's Knight pops out of the ground and stands firmly next to Turbo Synchron.
Then I tuned Queen's Knight with Junk Synchron to synchro-summon Power Tool Dragon. Junk Synchron transforms into three green rings and Queen's Knight transforms into four stars inside the rings. A beam of light shoots out of the rings and when the light dies down, Power Tool Dragon descends from the sky and hovers next to Turbo Synchron.
Power Tool Dragon: Level 7, Earth
ATK: 2300 DEF: 2500
"Power Tool Dragon's ability activates!" I shouted. "I choose and pick three equip spell cards in my deck. Then you have to choose which one of those equip cards that I should keep and the rest will be sent back to deck." The three equip cards are Mage Power, United We Stand, and Double Tool C&D.
Chazz hesitantly looks at the three cards' behind and wonder which card would screw me. He spoke, "The card to your right!"
The card he picks is Double Tool C&D and I send the other equip cards back to my deck as my duel disks shuffles my deck. "I equip Power Tool Dragon with Double Tool C&D!" I said as Power Tool Dragon got his equipment on. "Power Tool Dragon attacks your Armed Dragon! Also, my dragon's equipment gives him a 1000 attack point boost during the battle phase of my turn!"
Power Tool Dragon: ATK: 2300 + 1000 = 3300
Chazz gasps out of shock as my Power Tool Dragon uses his chainsaw to kill the Armed Dragon. Armed Dragon got cuts in half and then disappears.
Chazz's Life Points: 2500 – 500 = 2000
Chazz gritted his teeth. "It doesn't matter! Once your turn is over, I win!"
"Sorry, Chazz…" I spoke in a happy tone. "My turn's not over because I activate my facedown card, Urgent Tuning! This trap allows me to do a synchro-summon right now!"
"No way!" Chazz gasped. "There's a card that allows you to do that!"
"I tuned Power Tool Dragon with Turbo Synchron to synchro-summon a monster from the stars!" Turbo Synchron transforms into a green ring and Power Tool Dragon transforms into seven stars inside the ring. "Clusters of stars come together in order to open a pathway. The pathway for an even stronger monster to appear!" A beam of light shoots out of the ring. "Let's rev it up! I synchro-summon my ace monster, Stardust Dragon!" The beam dies down and Stardust Dragon descends from the sky.
Stardust Dragon: Level 8, Wind
ATK: 2500 DEF: 2000
"Stardust Dragon! Finish this duel!" I declare as Stardust Dragon fires a white beam at Chazz, which ends the duel.
Chazz's Life Points: 2000 – 2500 = 0
As soon as the holograms disappear, I saw Chazz sighs out of disappointment. He said, "It's over… I've lost the duel. My heart is shattered… The… Chazz… Has… Lost… His heart!"
What a Drama Queen! I thought as I try to put up a caring smile. Suddenly, we felt the ground began to shake. An earthquake! I gasped in my head as we all drop down on the ground, until the earthquake is over.
"What's happening to this island?" Alexis asks in shock.
Atticus gritted his teeth and he spoke, "This isn't good…"
"Ah!" Alexis gasps. "The Spirit Gate Key!"
Chazz and I look at our Keys and notice that they're glowing. The Keys slip out of our necks and started to fly away. Chazz suggested that we should follow the Spirit Gate Keys to see where they're heading, which we all agree. We follow the flying Keys, but I'm starting to have a bad feeling about this as we run through the dense forest.
