"Hayley…"
Damon shook Elena awake, looking at her through tired and worried eyes. They had been driving for ages now in their six-seat car, taking turns, because even though Damon and Stefan were both vampires after these hectic days, they found themselves getting tired very quickly. Bonnie was asleep on the front seat, Jenna and Jeremy were squashed in the backseat as Elena had her head on Damon's shoulder at the back. However the girl didn't seem to get much sleep, she had been muttering Hayley's name ever since she had dozed off.
"You were dreaming," Damon told Elena gently as she shot up, awake, searching for her baby.
Damon stroked Elena's arm lovingly to try and support her. He saw her biting her lip as her nose reddened and even though he couldn't see her eyes behind her dark sunglasses, he knew that she was crying.
"Why can't this pain just stop?" Elena asked him desperately, "Ever since I had her…I barely spent half her life with her. First Klaus took me…then he took her."
"We'll put an end to him for that reason," Damon assured her, kissing her knuckles.
"I think Hayley was trying to talk to me, Damon," She told him, a tear slipping down her cheek, "She felt my distress when I was in danger. What if I can feel her?"
"Elena, you were dreaming," Damon stroked her hair. "Hayley's too young to communicate. But we'll find her," He assured her. "We will."
Klaus couldn't sleep. He was twisting and turning as nightmares haunted him, nightmares of Hayley's bloodied face, nightmares of him slitting her throat, of her eyes boring into his as he stole her life away from her…
He woke up, wiping away the sweat that covered his forehead, however as soon as he held his hands out in front of him he saw blood on them.
Blood. Innocent blood.
He tried to wipe it away, he really did, but Hayley's voice was haunting him.
YouKilledMeDaddy.
Klaus shot up from the bed with a scream. He took deep breaths as he looked at his hands which were clean to his relief. He shot down a glass of bourbon and headed to Hayley's room. The girl was asleep in her crib, looking peaceful as if she were an angel.
The confusion in his head was heightening, making him unable to think clearly. The girl's lovely face and innocence was making him question everything he had ever worked for.
He took a deep breath and reached out to caress the girl's cheek as she tossed in her sleep.
Could he really have her killed by the next full moon? Was she really going to die in about three weeks?
Hayley stirred in her sleep. She could sense Klaus like she always did whenever he was near. She had grown to realize that wherever Klaus went, death and pain followed. He hurt her mother…He hurt her.
The girl knew that her mother and her father were not dead. They had to be alive, they had to save her.
Mommy, where are you?
….
"I'm here, Hayley, I'm here!" Elena screamed from the backseat of the speeding car, "I'm here, baby! We are coming for you!"
Elena turned to Damon, and even though her eyes were covered, he knew that there was hope in them. "I told you, Damon. Hayley's trying to talk to me…I wasn't asleep, I couldn't have been dreaming. Hayley will help us get to her, I believe that," She told him, her face lighting up.
"Then I trust that you're right," Damon told her. "Hayley will guide us. You two…You've always had a special bond."
Elena tried to picture Hayley's face as she told her over and over that they were coming for her.
"What is it?" Damon asked impatiently, "Do you think she can hear you?"
"She can," Elena said, eyes closed. It was a feeling that she couldn't quite explain, however she just felt it. Her baby was alive, communicating with her in her own special way.
"There has always been a bond between you two," Damon told Elena after a few moments of realization. "I just figured it now. Do you remember when I took you to the restaurant? A day or two before Klaus made you go to him?"
"Yes," Elena breathed out, "Klaus…He found me, in the bathroom. He told me not to tell you anything or he'd kill you."
"Hayley had started to act strange that night," Damon told her after a while. "She was still too young to talk but she kept saying 'mmm' and pointing at the bathroom. She wanted to let me know that you were in distress*…She was trying to say 'mummy'."
Damon took a sharp intake of breath as Elena strained to look at him through teary eyes, even though she could barely make out his features. "Hayley has a special connection to you, Elena…And if that's so, then I trust you and your instincts completely."
"You can't leave the poor girl in that crib all day, Master," One of the servant girls told Klaus the following morning. "She was crying again. She needs to get out, play with some toys…"
"Don't tell me what I can or can't do," Klaus said snappily.
"I'm sorry, Master."
"Go give her a bath," Klaus ordered her, "Then bring her here." He added with a sigh.
"Of course, Master."
Klaus sighed, pouring his sixth drink that morning. He focused on Hayley and the servant, hearing the water running, and then he walked to the bathroom.
"I haven't bathed her yet," The servant stammered, fearing her master's reaction. Hayley was in the bathtub, playing with a toy duck, and her eyes locked with Klaus's as he took small steps towards them.
"I know that," Klaus snapped, "Get out."
"Master…" She squeaked.
"I'll take care of this myself. Get. Out."
The girl bowed her head obediently and left Klaus alone with the child.
He sighed, leaning against the bathtub as he looked at the tiny girl playing in the lavender-scented water.
"You have Elena's hair," He said, more to himself than to her as he touched Hayley's short, brown locks very lightly.
"Mommy," she told him when she heard him mention the word 'Elena'.
"Yes, Mommy Elena," He added, taking a bottle of shampoo in his hands. He massaged her head with it and started to wash her hair, being incredibly gentle. He even covered her eyes with his hand and used a wine glass to rinse the suds off, carefully protecting her eyes from the shampoo.
"Come on," He said after a while. "I have something for you." He picked her up, dried her off and after a lot of difficulty, he managed to get her in a dress. He had to admit that the girl-his daughter-looked too cute wearing the polka dot dress he had the servants pick for her.
He took her little hand in his and she walked with him with frightened eyes. Klaus noticed-he could hear her heartbeat-but didn't say anything. Instead, he led her to a room, and unlocked the door swiftly.
It was a huge room decorated nicely with flowers, teddy bears, and all things that made it girly. In the middle of the room, there were plenty of toys-Dolls, dollhouses, soft toys, kitchen and hair sets…
The girl's eyes widened as she saw all the bright colours.
"Those toys are all for you," He told her as he put her down on the floor, "Do you like them?"
Hayley looked amazed as she reached out for the countless Barbies in the room.
"Yes," She told him, busying herself in brushing the doll's hair. "Thank you."
"Yeah…sure," Klaus added, not wanting to ruin the moment. He knew that he was doing all of this to ease his guilt, to make her happy one last time. He turned to leave.
"Don't leave Hayley alone…" He saw her lips wobbling, "Play with me."
After they had spent an entire night driving, Damon insisted that they stop for some snacks. Everyone remained in the car as Stefan went to order their cheeseburgers, compelling the waitress to serve them right away.
"It shouldn't take us long," Damon assured Elena when he saw her bouncing up and down nervously, "We'll continue the trip right away, I promise you."
"I haven't felt her since last night, Damon," Elena told him, her face paling.
"It's because you two seem to have a connection only when you are in distress, Elena," Damon tried to reassure her, "If she's sleeping or eating she'll be at peace."
"I hope you're right, Damon, because if he hurts her…if he hurts our baby…"
"Shh. Let's just focus on finding her, okay? And I want to get you better as well. You deserve a break, we all do. How is your vision?"
"It's better," Elena lied.
"I'm glad." Damon told her, hugging her to his body as the others smiled a little, all except Bonnie. She longed to tell Damon that Elena was nearly 100% blind, because he deserved to know that...However she couldn't go against Elena's wishes.
"You know what?" He asked her after a while in her ear, inhaling her scent. "What are we going to do after all of this is over?"
"I want to get married immediately after that," Elena told him with a smile on her face.
"We will. We'll have a nice wedding, with as many or as little guests as you like. We'll have a huge wedding cake, Hayley will be our flowergirl, and you'll get to wear the most expensive and beautiful wedding dress you'll find on this planet. Then, we will start over again, this time for real. We will build a new house together, decorate it with family photos…"
"Have a little garden," Elena added, still smiling. Damon stroked her hair happily, knowing that he had managed to put a smile on her face.
"Yes. Have a little garden with roses…"
"And orange trees," Elena said, closing her eyes, imagining the scene.
"Hayley will grow up there, surrounded by people who love her and by nature. I will take her for vampiric rides, play with her, and give her everything she wants…"
"You spoil us."
"You deserve to be spoiled," Damon whispered in her ear. "And then, there's you. I will throw you in my bed everyday and never let you leave, because you're my life."
"Shh, Damon," Elena blushed, fearing that the others would hear them.
He smirked, kissing her lips softly.
Klaus was watching Hayley playing, and sometimes he'd throw a ball in her direction and watch as she crawled after it. Hayley was now playing with the dollhouse, too lost to even notice him.
She suddenly turned back to grab one of the dolls from the other side of the room, when she felt something pressing against her knee. She let out a loud cry as Klaus stood up, alarmed, seeing that a piece of a small toy was in her knee, causing it to bleed. When Hayley saw the blood, she screamed even harder.
But nothing, no one, could explain the fear Hayley felt when Klaus turned towards her with his demonic face, meaning to help her, however Hayley thought he was going to hurt her. She screamed and crawled away from him, disappearing to the hallway as Klaus followed her in panic, trying to compose himself.
"Hayley, it's okay!"
The girl's heart raced expeditiously inside her tiny rib cage as she frantically pulled herself along the flooring, feeling the friction of the wood on her bleeding knee. There was a sense of panic that was encompassing her in those moments following as the man stumbled behind her. She could feel him getting closer with every step, but she couldn't stop her little legs from propelling her forward. It was all so sudden when the floor seemed to disappear from under her and a desperate shriek left her lips.
"Damon, Hayley's in danger!" Elena screamed against his lips as she felt her baby's fear, "He's attacking her! I saw his predator face…He's going to hurt her!"
Chaos engulfed the car as everyone started to speak at the same time. However, Elena couldn't take it anymore. She felt her head heaving as the voices jumbled into a loud mass. She felt herself slowly losing consciousness, her muscles freely slackening against her bones.
"Maple Street…" Was all she muttered before she fell in Damon's arms.
Klaus ran behind Hayley wildly, his face returning to its normal state in the process. He called out her name repeatedly and the consternation was ripping him apart as he continued to alarmingly trail after her. Why couldn't she just give him a chance? He was trying so hard to be the father he should have been from the start, at least until he figured out whether or not he was going to go through with the sacrifice. He was desperate at this point, almost pleading.
"Hayley, don't be afraid…" He attempted, however a scream interrupted him.
Hayley's scream.
He could feel the hysteria consume him and what was left of his heart skipped a beat suddenly.
"Hayley!" He roared as he hastily ran to the place where the scream had originated.
The stairs. No, no, no, he begged in his mind, watching in horror as her blue eyes suddenly locked with his for the briefest second. It was as if she knew what was coming next.
"Hayley!" He pleaded in a last minute endeavor.
But he was too late. Before he had the chance to do anything, Hayley had rolled down the entire flight of stairs and laid motionless on the floor below.
*Refer to Chapter 12: Restaurant scene.
As you can see, Klaus is trying to be nice to Hayley both to ease his guilt and also because now that he met her something inside of him is making him realise that after all, it isn't going to be easy to kill his own flesh and blood. However, Hayley's life is now at stake...
