Connor wasn't sure what she had missed but as soon as she was off the plane and in the Triskelion, she was found by Maria Hill who was in a state.

"Connor!" The teenager spun around to look at the woman. She knew it was serious the second she heard Maria say her first name.

"Connor, you better come quick, Fury's been attacked."

She reached the viewing room of the operation theatre and saw two familiar figures standing beside the window and she watched with them, knowing that they knew she was there.

Fury was lying on the operating table, and suddenly the machine stopped beeping along with his heart. They all waited in anticipation as the doctors waited. After a minute the surgeon asked one of the nurses for the time and Connor knew Fury was gone.

Connor watched as Steve turned and walked away, leaving Natasha standing staring at Fury. Connor felt her heart miss a beat, and her chest tighten. She had just lost someone and now she was losing another. Just as Connor was walking away, she thought she heard a heartbeat but after looking back over her shoulder, she realised that Fury was dead and it was someone else's heartbeat probably.

Connor moped around in the small Cafe for a while before she decided she should probably speak to Steve or Natasha. She followed Steve's scent up to the top floor where she could hear him walking out of the top office. She jumped around the corner and grabbed him in a hug, taking him by surprise.

He stroked the top of her hair as she clung onto him. He looked down at her.

"Connor, where have you been?" He asked slowly and she shrugged.

"Fury sent me out with one of his specialized teams, the one I told you about before." Steve nodded and the two walked over to the elevator.

Steve muttered his level but Connor was too busy deciding how much she hated lifts as they made her claustrophobia worse to hear him. The door was stopped from closing by a group of men and she could smell the gunpowder on them.

Connor was on edge and was looking at different escape routes in case the lift broke down. She ignored Steve talking to the men and watched as more got in. She watched Steve's expressions and saw that his eyes were focused on a gun that currently had a hand securely around it and ready to pull out to fire.

She moved closer to Steve and he lightly placed a comforting hand on her back. He looked over at her in a friendly way but she could tell he knew she could feel the tension in the room.

The man Steve had been talking to looked her up and down. "Connor Whittmore, right?" She nodded slowly.

"We got told you were out on a mission with Ward and May's team." She nodded. He laughed and looked her up and down before smirking. "Things might have gone differently had it been a different specialist than the robot. Must admit, if I was in his shoes, I would have taken the shot even without the lack of will."

Steve tensed slightly but only enough for Connor to notice. She knew what he was implying: that had it not been Ward on that plane, he would have fired a round straight into her head, taking her out instantly.

"I just finished." She spoke sourly, ignoring his remark and he raised an eyebrow.

"We all heard about your brother, condolences. Must have been hard to be forced to kill him." He poked on and the girl clenched her fist, not wanting to have to listen to him for much longer.

"I liked your family you know. If only you'd have followed in their footsteps."

Connor turned her head away and she could feel herself getting angrier. She knew Steve was staring at her in shock - she hadn't spoke to any of the team in a while other than checkups with Natasha, so she wasn't surprised he hadn't known - yet as the doors opened again, they both realised the lift was full.

They shared join looks of understanding. Something was corrupt in SHIELD and whatever or whoever it was, did not want either of the Avengers leaving - alive at least.

"Before we get started, does anyone want to get out?" Steve said sarcastically. Connor growled and let her eyes glow.

One of the guys turned around and pulled out a taser, attempting to stab Steve with it.

Connor hit the emergency brake button and shifted fully, her hackles raised and snarling at the men.

Her black coat was longer than Steve remembered, it was scruffy looking and thicker and he wasn't sure why but it gave her a more dangerous look about her. Her eyes were bright blue, and it made him think of a conversation they had all had in the Avengers tower many months before. His attention wasn't focusing on that though, because something shiny was flying towards him.

As one of them clipped a metal cuff onto Steve she launched forward, grabbing his wrist with her teeth and pulling him to the floor. He clutched at his wrist in pain while she turned at snapped at another man.

As the Captain was getting shocked, Connor was being pinned to the ground by one of the other men, a gunshot was fired and it narrowly missed her ear. Connor could hear someone yelling something down an earpiece about not killing her and she growled before flipping the man into the wall. Steve managed to knock the rest out apart from the main guy with the taser and Connor stood beside Steve growling at him.

"I just want you to know Cap, this isn't personal." He lunged for Steve and Connor stood ready in case she needed to help him.

Steve threw him up against the roof and he hit the floor, knocked out.

"It kind of feels personal." He flipped his shield back on to his arm before staring around at the floor of the elevator.

Steve turned to look at Connor who had shifted back.

"Your eyes..." She shook her head.

"Not now."

He snapped back into action and hit the open button on the lift doors. There was an group of armed agents aiming at them so he quickly slashed the wires of the lift and Connor held on to his arm as they went shooting downwards.

It came to a halt and Steve pried the doors open only to find another squad heading towards them. He slammed the doors back shut and looked out the window before looking at Connor.

"We need to jump, I'll hold you." Connor growled at the idea but agreed, letting Steve pick her up before jumping out of the window.

They went flying through the roof of the building below and Steve let go of her just before they hit the ground. He lay there for a moment and Connor's eyes shone, feeling her bones clicking back into place. She could hear people around them screaming and Steve stood up and ran with Connor close behind.

He jumped onto his motorbike and looked at her. "Get on." She shook her head.

She was a tracked dog. Now it was making sense, why it had been ordered that she was microchipped for her location to be known at all times - she should have realised.

"I still have my tracker in my shoulder, I can't stay with you. I'll go with you but I'll create a false trail." He didn't like the idea but it was the only one they had.

They took off, just making it out before the gate shut on them and Steve took out a plane while Connor kept an eye open for any others. He looked at her and they took off again. Connor looked over at him.

"I'm going to go left, you go right."

He said a quick goodbye and Connor swerved left, going down a different street. Her eyes shone blue, and she knew it was almost over.
