CHAP 35

A NEW DAY ARRIVES

"So, why don't you prepare two successors, Jiraiya-sensei?"

"What do you mean?" the Sannin frowned.

"What I mean is that I think Shino should come with us."

"Yep, that's a great idea." Naruto exclaimed.

Hiruzen sighed. "I am not sure I can grant your request, but please tell me your reasons."

"Right." Akimi nodded. "Here it is..." she took a deep breath.

Naruto was grinning happily at the prospect of his whole team going on a training trip together.

"Shino is an excellent tracker and sensor. Kakashi-sensei has been training him extensively and basically at ANBU level. Sensei's ninja dogs have been working with him as well." Akimi started. "I know that you mentioned Uchiha Itachi and he would probably know about the Aburame's Kikaichū, but nevertheless a swarm of insects is always quite covert. Moreover, no one really knows about Shino's summons. The contract has been buried inside the Aburame's vaults for decades, forgotten. No one would pay attention to a butterfly. That would come in handy not only for recon but also if we need to send a message back to Konoha. Everyone knows Jiraiya-sensei summons toads and tigers are much more conspicuous than butterflies anyway."

Hiruzen nodded. "I see." he replied, inhaling with his pipe. "Go on, I am sure there is more."

"We are an excellent team." Naruto spoke up. "These nin hunting me down are S-rank and all of that, but we work best all three together. I tend to take the spotlight and Akimi does too, because she is always right there supporting me, but everyone forgets about Shino. He likes staying in the shades anyway..." he grinned. "That makes him deadly."

"And he is smart and quite adapt to everything that is sneaky." Akimi continued, passionately. "Besides, I think he deserves to train with Jiraiya-sensei as well. I mean, you are an Earth type, sensei, are you not? You could totally help him with nature manipulation and teach him more about tracking and covert work. Shino would love that."

"Yep!" Naruto nodded frantically besides her. "I know Shino wouldn't want to be left behind, at least not without good reason."

"You realise the mission could be very dangerous, yes?" Hiruzen replied, puffing out smoke. "Akatsuki could caught up with you... and Danzō is sure to send someone against you."

Naruto gulped, tensing. His eyes became sad all of a once. If there was something he hated was to be responsible for his loved ones being in danger.

Akimi squeezed his hand. "Being chased by mindless cronies too? It's all the more reasons to have another good sensor with us." she joked, then her face got serious. "We are shinobi, especially after the invasion it has been clear our life are in danger more often than not. Besides, I think Shino should ultimately decide. Naruto-kun, we aren't going to abandon you just because S-rank madmen are chasing you. We'll stick together. Shino should be the one to decide. We can tell him even if he won't come, right?"

Hiruzen nodded. "Yes. I know you trust Shino with your life and with good reason. I've haven't forgotten you are ultra-paranoid, Akimi." he smirked. "And Shibi-san is a good man and a trusted friend of mine as well. I will tell him about Akatsuki so his clan can be on alert as well."

"And Shibi-san will have to allow his son to come anyway, all right?" Jiraiya said. "Involving the Aburame more actively is an excellent idea, they will give us more valuable help that way. Merely offering for the clan heir to come train with me will honour them a lot... thus motivate them, no matter what the outcome is."

"Indeed." Hiruzen mumbled between himself. "But I am not sure yet. You are going to be visiting quite a few towns and Capitol City as well. An Aburame would stick out a lot."

Akimi narrowed her eyes and glanced sideway to the Sannin. "Jiraiya-sensei is almost two meter tall, with white eyes and a very distinctive perverted giggle. He passes unnoticed if he wants to... and we can use genjutsu."

"A genjutsu would make things easier for both Root and Akatsuki. Ninja will be hunting us down." Jiraiya reminded. He frowned. "And I don't have a very distinctive giggle."

Akimi and Naruto looked at him in tandem, an incredulous expression on their faces. "Yes, you do."

"You totally do, Ero-sennin."

Jiraiya pouted. "You two are mean."

Hiruzen chuckled. "I am sure you won't be happy to hear this, Akimi-chan, but the ugly truth is that perverted giggles are quite more frequent that you would like. Individuals always wearing dark hoods and sunglasses are not. Shino-kun would stick out in a crow."

"A genjutsu seal is stable and would not be very noticeable. Besides it's a training trip, we are going to be using chakra right? Otherwise it would be a little pointless." Akimi replied. "And Naruto-kun is going to drive us mad within two days if he were forced not to use chakra. His day isn't complete if he doesn't train or pop out several dozens of clones."

"Hilarious." Naruto nudged her shoulder playfully. "Says the one who starts whining if she can't study Fūinjutsu every waking moment thanks to shadow clones."

"Studying Fūinjutsu doesn't necessarily require chakra." Akimi blew him a raspberry. "So you would whine much sooner and for much longer than I would."

"Enough you two!" Jiraiya stopped them before their bickering escalated. "A genjutsu seal sounds interesting. You have several in your repertoire, kids, have you not?"

Akimi shrugged. "I have a lot designed to cover up traps and camping spots, we never really used them as a substitution for Henge though, but it shouldn't be difficult to get something solid. Especially with your help, sensei."

"A good genjutsu seal would be very nice indeed." Jiraiya suddenly got a pensive look. He smirked. "I am getting a good vibe about this, think about it! Kage Bunshin and genjutsu seals."

"Sounds like a perfect diversion technique." Naruto smirked. "That's genial, Ero-sennin."

"Can Shino perform Kage Bunshin?" enquired the Hokage.

"He can clone his insects, you saw it." Naruto shrugged. "He never tried to clone himself, but what's the point? I mean if we are using Henge it would not make a difference if the clones were his or mine."

"True enough, although a difference in chakra could help those who are chasing us to detect which ones are the true us." Jiraiya mused. "But it would still be useful to mud the water anyway... and if Shino can clone himself just a couple of times it would be enough I suppose."

Akimi was confident she and Naruto had convinced the Hokage to concede their request. She wondered if the man was feeling a little guilty and was more indulgent for that reason. "Besides, I think that most of our comrades would be less suspicious if Shino came too. We were all promoted today, so we are a team of rookie chūnin... the only one you have right now. Intensive training for a few weeks, while Jiraiya-sensei makes a routine visit to his contacts would be a very reasonable explanation for the trip. Once we are back, we would be ready to go on serious missions together without problems." she said. "It could be the official explanation you give for the trip."

Hiruzen nodded, a slightly smug grin on his strained face. "Yes indeed. It is something that even my Elder Council wouldn't be able to argue about, since they are so intent to make us stronger militarily. And Team 7 already completed an A rank mission with success as genin."

"Never mind the fact that they are obviously loyal to you and the Will of Fire, so that will annoy Danzō to no end which is always a plus." Jiraiya giggled soundly, prompting Akimi and Naruto to smirk at him. The Sannin ruffled his hair and pouted. "You made your point, right? Don't tease."

Akimi rolled her eyes but didn't say a word.

Naruto opted to jump around in excitement instead. "So what do you think, jiji?"

"Your reasons are sound." Hiruzen smiled and nodded. "I think we will definitely ask Shibi-san and let him and his son decide for themselves."

"Yes, I'll pay a visit to the Aburame compound once we are finished here." Jiraiya said. "Shino will come to you tomorrow morning, very early, either to say goodbye or to prepare our departure together. He is your teammate, no one will think anything of him coming to visit you."

"Sounds like a plan!" Akimi smiled, satisfied of the overall outcome of the conversation. The tension earlier had been almost unbearable, but things had turned out for the better. "We should probably go and start to get ready."

Hiruzen nodded. "I will miss you two, but I am happy to leave you in Jiraiya's good hands... safe and sound." he said, his tone caring and grandfatherly. "You take care of yourself, be careful and do try to get some sleep tonight. You will need a lot of energy in the next few days."

The duo nodded and Naruto rushed forward to hug the old man. "Thanks, jiji. You are awesome even if you kept all those secrets."

Hiruzen laughed and ruffled his hair. "Thank you for forgiving me, Naruto-kun. Your parents would be extremely proud of you and of the shinobi you have become."

Akimi smiled at the scene. "Sarutobi-sama, you need to take care as well. This Shimura-san sounds dangerous."

"He is." the Hokage sighed. "But I do have some tricks up my sleeves. I know Danzō well, I will manage to keep up with him. Your mother-hen tendencies are heart-warming, Akimi." he smiled.

She smiled sheepishly. "I can't help it."

Hiruzen nodded. "Keep an eye to Naruto and Jiraiya for me. Be the sensible one."

"I will." the girl promised.

Naruto and Jiraiya huffed.

"By the way, could you please send Kaera-chan to Kakashi. I need to speak with him urgently. Tell him he is to use the window."

"Is that a code to ask him to be sneaky?" Akimi smirked. "Consider it done, Hokage-sama. Will you tell him we are leaving?"

"Yes." Hiruzen nodded. "I am sure he will come to say good-bye to you. Kakashi cares for your deeply." and with that, the old man released the privacy seals around the office. "Good night, kids."

"Good night, Hokage-sama, sensei." Akimi greeted, while Naruto nodded before jumping out of the window swiftly.

Hiruzen and Jiraiya looked at each other.

"The conversation didn't go as I expected." Sarutobi mused. "Those two never fail to surprise me."

"They will go far." Jiraiya commented. "We have much to do, sensei."

"Then let us not waste time."

Hyūga Compound – outer garden

Neji Hyūga looked as serious and brooding as always. Outwardly he was the same indifferent and arrogant genin he had been when the Chūnin Exam had started, but inwardly he was in turmoil.

Uzumaki Naruto had basically turned his world upside down. The way Naruto had fought had been shell-shocking at the very least. Neji had realised that Team 7 had been very successful during the Second Exam, which was impressive for three rookies, but has always chalked it up to the Aburame's and the girl's efforts. He had a harsh wake-up call though: Naruto planned their battle from the very start and adapted his tactic quickly and promptly as he learned more about Neji's fighting style. The moment his body had been shook by a sudden electric jolt Neji had felt humiliated and as Naruto charged towards him he thought he would never stop feeling that way.

Then Naruto had talked, even as he punched him. "I don't know much about the Hyūga's fate of hatred! You think it's impossible to change it? Then don't do anything...! But when I'm Hokage, I'll change the Hyūga for you, Neji!"

The promise was ridiculous, because the Hyūga clan had been that way ever since the very beginning, decades and decades ago. One loud-mouthed ninja wasn't going to make a difference?

Was it?

Naruto used a seal that allowed him to use water in the arena. His teammate Akimi was rumoured to be a budding Fūinjutsu mistress... and obviously the blonde knew his stuff as well. Somehow, he could totally see them break down the Hyūga's Curse Seal. Yes, as unlikely as it sounded Neji trusted Naruto's words. A part of him found the notion ridiculous.

A bigger part of him rejoiced, though. The optimist and kind spirit he possessed as a child, which had been squashed and buried by the anger he felt, had re-emerged. Neji's blind and dejected faith in destiny had transformed in something much more powerful: hope for the future and faith in himself and his ability to overcome his so called destiny. Neji was convinced that Naruto could keep his promise... and he had every intention to help him.

What Neji didn't know was that fate – or coincidence if one were more sceptical – would hand down the chance to do so sooner that he thought. The young genius had been training on the outer edge of the clan's compound, where the sparring grounds of the Branch House were, and was now going back towards his sleeping quarters. Despite his usually all-knowing sight he was very bewildered when his cousin clashed against him. Hinata had been running almost mindlessly, her face flushed and her breath laboured. She looked panicked, especially after she realised who had stopped her flight.

Neji's almost mocked her, instinctively. He had always known Hinata was too meek to retaliate – using the Curse Seal for instance – and it was an excellent outlet for his anger and frustration. He would go on and on about how week and useless she was and yet Hinata always smiled at him affectionately. That was in itself a sign of strength.

"Hinata-sama?" he asked, quietly. "Is everything all right?"

"N-n Neji-san." the girl stuttered, her voice even frailer than usual. "I-I-I I a-am f-fine."

Neji didn't need to use his Byakugan to read the fear in her face, nor it escaped his notice that she was surprised of his kindness. She was possibly untrusting as well, at least at a subconscious level. "Is it, Hinata?" he stressed, keeping his voice soft and forcing the most sincere smile he could on his face. He really wasn't used to smile anymore. "You can tell me what's wrong."

Neji had resolved to be as helpful as he could with his cousin after Hiashi Hyūga had revealed him the truth about his father's death. Hizashi Hyūga had sacrificed himself for his brother and his niece and Neji wasn't certainly honouring his sacrifice by bullying Hinata. The young girl was possibly the only innocent part in the whole story and the only member of the Main House to have a truly gentle soul.

Hinata looked hesitant. She looked around frantically. "I... I h-heard something."

"Something you shouldn't have." Neji guessed. "But no one is following you, so you weren't discovered."

Hinata swallowed hard. Her heart was still beating crazily in her chest. "N-no... n-no one p-pays attention to m-me."

Neji nodded. He wondered what it was all about, but he had the feeling that no one would be very displeased to have underestimated Hinata. "So what did you hear?" he asked in a whisper. Then he glanced around as well. Perhaps it wasn't such a good idea to talk about it in the compound.

Hinata opened her mouth but didn't utter a word. She swallowed again.

Neji tried to smile again, hoping to reassure her. "Perhaps it's best if you don't say anything." he said. "How about tomorrow I escort you to the market early in the morning?"

Hinata considered his proposal... her cousin was really smart. "The v-vegetables s-stands are going to open r-right at d-dawn." she whispered, her voice still unconfident. "I-I-I like to g-get the best ones early."

Neji nodded. "And you cook often. It won't be suspicious." he bowed. "I'll be at your service then, Hinata-sama. You should get back to your quarters, now. It's not proper for you to be here."

"N-Neji-san?" Hinata asked very timidly before he could turn and leave.

"Yes?"

"D-do y-you know w-where U-Uzumaki-san lives?" she continued, rushing through the last part of the sentence even as her voice lowered to a barely there murmur.

Fortunately, Neji was very adept at reading lips. "I do." he replied, turning her back and leaving without another word.

In truth, he was extremely intrigued. It looked like he chance to assist Uzumaki Naruto had come already. And so it happened that the third smile that graced his face that day – the third one in several long years – was definitely worthy of that name.

On the opposite side of Konoha, Aburame Clan Compound

Shibi Aburame's was quietly enjoying dinner with his family, in celebration of his son's recent promotion to chūnin. Despite it being a celebration, the atmosphere wasn't too lively and everyone was speaking with low voices.

It would have been very different if Shino's teammate had joined them. Speaking of which. "Son." he called and Shino turned to him, departing from his two cousins who were curtly telling of their role during the invasion.

"Yes, Tou-san?"

"Any idea why Uzumaki-san and Katora-san have refused our invitation?" the man asked.

"Not sure." Shino shrugged. "We were having a quick sneak at their home and we were interrupted by a toad."

"Ah." Shibi nodded. He had been worried about that: Danzō coming out of the shadows could only mean trouble. He tilted his head. "A toad like that?"

Shino followed his gaze. A small grey toad was looking at them with wide eyes from the hallway, its tongue shooting out and in of its mouth very quickly. "It wasn't Naruto." he said. "He knows insects are wary of toads. They would have sent Kaera-chan."

"Interesting." Shibi mused. "Excuse me, son, it seems you shall have to entertain our guests for me."

Shino nodded and simply watched his father leave without another word. Aburame didn't like to fill silence with useless words. He frowned in worry, though. Something was definitely going on. He was confident his father would speak to him later and if not he would send a butterfly to his teammate... he had been wondering what was wrong with Naruto, after all.

"I am quite surprised." Shibi replied, having followed the grey toad to the private garden/training area of his house. The one where Shino spent time with his teammates and that had been consequentially filled with seals courtesy of Katora-san. "I wasn't expecting to see you."

"Ah, yes." Jiraiya was standing with his arm crossed, eye closed. He nodded to the toad in thanks and the animal disappeared with a puff of smoke. "You probably figured we would communicate through our apprentices... a little less obvious, uh?"

"So they are watching Uzumaki-san?"

"Naruto and Akimi can be very sneaky, but one can never be too sure... and they are too polite to sneak into your compound." Jiraiya opened his eyes. "Besides, the situation is more critical than you may think."

"Danzō wants to be Hokage." Shibi shrugged. He usually upheld politeness and honorific forms, but he disdained the man very much. "I won't let that happen without a fight."

"That old croon recruited one of your clan's mate too many, uh?" Jiraiya's face was the picture of contempt. "I would kill him, but Sarutobi-sensei seems to think it's a bad idea..."

"Danzō's death may cause a civil war. Root it's still operative." Shibi explained coldly. "After it was disbanded, I spoke with the members of my clan who had been recruited, offering their place back in our ranks. Most of them joined regular ANBU, though... the ones who were accounted for."

Jiraiya raised an eyebrow. "And the others are supposedly dead?"

"Supposedly. You know how black opts are. No records." Shibi's face hardened. "That is not the most worrisome thing."

Jiraiya tilted his head. "It isn't?"

"The one who returned... they were different."

"How?"

"Brainwashed, Jiraiya-sama." Shibi explained. "I know where their loyalty lies."

"Seems it was good indeed I was the one to come." the Sannin remarked. "Any of them inside your house now?"

"Of course not." Shibi replied with a slightly annoyed tone. "Only my closest family is there. Danzō didn't succeeded in recruiting any of the clan head's immediate relatives."

Jiraiya didn't disappoint the Aburame, picking out the relevant bit at once. "But he tried? Who?"

"My son." Shibi basically growled.

He didn't lose his composure, standing still and with his face blank, but the Sannin was too perceptive not to notice his sheer anger. Jiraiya wondered what his two apprentices, being so accustomed to the Aburame's clan antics, would be able to see in the man's demeanour. His two apprentices...

"Oh, no." Jiraiya groaned. "Now Akimi will surely make killing Danzō one of her long-term goals."

Shibi smirked, but it was hidden by his coat. 'Good.'

"Any chance Shino-kun won't tell that story to his teammates?"

Shibi tilted his head. "No." he deadpanned. "The only reason he hasn't already it's because they haven't been to Katora-san's vault yet. Your toad interrupted them."

"Well, back on track." the Sannin sighed. No use trying to prevent the inevitable. "Any of these brainwashed clan's mates of yours are jōnin?"

Shibi shrugged. "They were high-level ANBU operative, so yes."

"Got any influence on your other jōnin?"

"Possibly. But most of the clan is loyal to me, especially after Shino's performance in the exam."

"Your son is going to grow into a powerful shinobi indeed. That reflects on your own might." Jiraiya nodded and he opened in a smirk. "Looks like Akimi is really going to have her way after all."

Shibi frowned. "How so?"

"If Danzō has already tried to get his paws on Shino and right now he is one of the main factors for your influence inside your clan..."

"My son is in danger." Shibi sounded annoyed.

"The perfect solution is at hand, Shibi-san." Jiraiya reassured. He sat down, crossing his legs. "I am taking Naruto and Akimi out of the village."

"You don't want them to become political pawns." Shibi deduced, leaning against a tree. "And they want Shino to come along."

"Someone is after the nine-tails." Jiraiya gravely announced.

Shibi stood straight, his face alarmed. "You are going to protect Naruto, are you?"

"Of course. You should know that I have many reasons to do so."

Shibi nodded. "The Fourth's legacy."

"You are truly worried for Naruto." Jiraiya was surprised. "And it's not only because this could endanger your own son."

"Shino has always been lonely, even for our clan's standards. The day he joined Team 7 was blessed. I had my doubts, but..." Shibi smiled under his collar. "He is happy and cares deeply for Akimi and Naruto. They aren't just teammates."

Jiraiya smiled as well. "You are very understanding, Shibi-san. Thank you." he bowed his head. "I'll protect your son, don't you worry. The trip may take a while, I am going to visit my contacts through Hi no Kuni. I want to introduce them to Akimi..."

Shibi restrained a chuckle. The girl was going to be a scary Spy Mistress, he was sure.

"... and to your son as well."

"Oh." Shibi actually sounded surprise. "This was Katora-san's idea, was it?"

Jiraiya nodded. "She gave us some solid reasoning. Those three are quite dangerous together and apparently your son's summons may come in handy. You signed the contract as well?"

"Indeed."

"Even better." Jiraiya smirked. "We will use genjutsu and Kage Bunshin as a diversion tactic. You give me permission to teach a kinjutsu to your son?"

"Seeing Uzumaki-san's frequent use of that technique I've been preparing myself for this moment. Shino is ready. I believe those three have been planning and preparing for a while to make it happen."

"Wouldn't surprise me." Jiraiya nodded. "It's a done deal, then, as soon as your son agrees. We will make sure to advertise that in this time of need I am taking the three brightest young nin of the village to prepare them. I would not train someone unworthy, now, would I? They'll be taking high level missions once we are back."

"And then my influence will have taken root firmly within my clan."

Jiraiya giggled. "Ironic isn't it?" he nodded. "Now, Shibi-san, tell me everything you know about this brainwashing you mentioned... and your evidence Root it's still there."

And Shibi sat down with a sigh. That was going to be a long talk and Aburame did not like to talk much. However, as it happens, he hated Danzō much more, so it was a necessary evil.

Katora residence – Vault.

Naruto collapsed into an armchair, looking exhausted. He was looking down, massaging his temples and letting out several long sighs.

Akimi's face was a mask of worry. "Want to let it out?" she asked, crouching down in front of him. "Otherwise I have some ramen right here." she waved a scroll in front of him.

"Not hungry." Naruto murmured.

Akimi nodded. "Look, Naruto, none of us is holding you at fault. It's not your fault, you know that?"

"Knowing it isn't enough." Naruto mumbled, covering his eyes with a hand. "It's all too much."

"All right, we'll tackle one thing at one time." Akimi spoke softly. "Are you still angry with Sarutobi-sama and Jiraiya-sensei?"

"Perhaps, but not enough to explode like that again. It was good to talk about it."

"You mean scream about it?"

Naruto chuckled bitterly. "Yes, more like that." he murmured. "I believe that jiji was really going to tell me, like he said. He probably decided ages ago he would reveal the truth about the Uzumaki only after my promotion and just stuck with that."

Akimi lightly touched his elbow. "And perhaps we should have talked to him before. I am sorry, my paranoia actually contributed to increase your stress."

"Don't be ridiculous, 'mi-chan." Naruto shook his head and placed his hand over hers.. "Perhaps when you first showed me my legacy chest I agreed not to talk about it to jiji only because you suggested it, but later on...? I agreed with your reasoning. After he failed to mention Kyūbi I hoped he would at least come clean about my mother."

"So are you disappointed again he hasn't told you about your father?"

"Yes." Naruto nodded. "I was surprised you encouraged me to drop the matter, but I was so tired of fighting with them. I guess that between Akatsuki, Orochimaru, Kuroken and Danzō we have our hands too full to waste time arguing with our allies."

"Damn it, that's a long list." Akimi considered. "It's good, you know, admitting it. You should probably tell Jiraiya-sensei as well. Being sincere about this will make it harder for Kyūbi to influence you."

Naruto finally raised his eyes and frowned. "Are you up to something, 'mi-chan?" he questioned, nudging her so she would sit on his lap.

Akimi snuggled comfortably into him. "Aren't I always?" she winked.

The boy chuckled. "What did I miss?"

"You are Kyūbi's jailer and the heir of the Uzumaki's clan. You said it." Akimi shrugged. "So why and how would your father's identity make things even more dangerous for you?"

Naruto scratched his chin. "No idea."

"Clearly it must be some nin who had powerful enemies in one of the other ninja villages... my money is on Kumo (Cloud) or Iwa (Rock), because the Mist is a little too busy with its own political struggle right now." Akimi explained. "And someone this villages hated enough to actually pursue revenge long after his death, by killing his son."

Naruto looked pensive. "So someone who played a relevant role in the Third Shinobi War?"

"Very likely." Akimi nodded. "I feel like there is something obvious staring at us and we are not noticing it. Must be because there are so many things going on..."

"Yes, I know. I am not really that angry at jiji anymore, but..." Naruto touched his stomach. "I am afraid Kyūbi is going to exploit my temper at the first chance. Perhaps I shouldn't have talked to the fox at all."

"Naruto-kun, we just finished fighting a war and you discovered the details of your mother's death, being stressed is perfectly normal." Akimi smiled and leaned forward to touch his chin. "It's not different that you losing it in Nami or in the forest of Death. You love your mother. That's why you are so angry... difference is, you can't do nothing about it, you cannot save her. That makes even more frustrated."

Naruto considered her words. "Yeah, and knowing that Akatsuki is chasing me now isn't helping, is it?"

"Jiraiya-sensei will take care of it, we will be travelling and training. Sooner or later this Red Clouds will meet their reckoning." Akimi spoke with certainty. "I am sure that as soon as we start training you will considerably relax, I know you, Naruto. You are too stubborn to let Kyūbi win."

"Perhaps. I hope my stubbornness is enough this time." he mused.

"You stopped, Naruto. That's what counts. You didn't actually attack any of us. You wouldn't."

"Right, I suppose that I have your own stubbornness to rely on, have I?" he looked at her tenderly. "I am glad you were there."

"Where else would have I been?"

Hokage's office, later in the night

Hiruzen didn't move as he heard the window open. He was sitting at his desk, his hands crossed under his chin and his eyes closed. Kakashi did not remember ever seeing his leader appear so old and tired. "As usually you are late."

"You asked me to use the window." the jōnin observed. "So I went to great length to ensure no-one who would follow me. Although the thought you would be worried someone would spy the movements around the Tower worries me greatly. Something is brewing, is it?"

Hiruzen sighed and he slowly went through the handseals to activate the privacy seals around the office. His head was pounding and his shoulders slumped down. "I am an old man and I made many mistakes over the years." he said. "You witnessed several of them."

Kakashi shrugged and closed the window behind him. "And one has come to haunt you, Hokage-sama?"

"My own student just attacked my village, killing my people." Sarutobi murmured, his voice sounding like it was coming from far, far away. "So it shouldn't be surprising that my old friend is backstabbing me. After all he warned me."

"Danzō is plotting against you again?" Kakashi replied, frowning. "Root has been disbanded."

Hiruzen tilted his head and sighed again. "I am starting to doubt it. Danzō is too sneaky to simply give up. I thought I had everything under control..."

"And the invasion gave him the perfect opportunity to break the political balance." Kakashi nodded. "You shouldn't be too hard on yourself, Hokage-sama. Konoha needs you."

Hiruzen took off his hat and rubbed his temples. "Yes." he replied, his weary voice becoming resolute. "I will always protect the village. Kakashi-kun..."

"I know." the other man replied. "Give me your orders, Hokage-sama."

"An association of S-rank nin, Akatsuki, is hunting the tailed beasts down." Hiruzen announced.

"Nani?" Kakashi didn't shout, but the panic could be heard in his voice. He went to sit down. "Who?"

"Uchiha Itachi. That's the level we have dealing with." the old Kage explained. "They travel in pair."

"If they attack Konoha so soon after we were invaded..."

Sarutobi nodded. "Naruto will be safe. Your whole team is going to leave the village with Jiraiya tomorrow morning, I would advise you visit them around dawn, so you can say goodbye."

Kakashi smiled. "Very well."

"Be alert. Keep your eyes open for red clouds. That's the uniform they are using."

"Original." the jōnin smirked a little.

Hiruzen forced out a smile, but given the tension in his face he doubted he managed very well. "Naruto knows about Kushina." he revealed.

Kakashi gaped. "You told him everything?"

"I only confirmed what he already knew. Short long story, Akimi's clan knew about the Uzumakis. They entrusted some kind of legacy to the Enkounkin... including a scroll that allowed them to deduce Kushina was his mother. Then Kyūbi itself gave them enough information to figure out Kushina was the previous container."

Kakashi rubbed his head. "This is both impressive and scary." he mused. "Naruto talked with Kyūbi voluntarily?"

"He confirmed that someone killed Kushina to release the fox and then control it." Hiruzen sighed again. "Possibly the mastermind between our Akatsuki as well since they seem to know about Naruto."

"Or Itachi told them."

"Yes, that is a possibility too, but... just a feeling I have. I am convinced it's the same enemy we are facing."

"The one who killed Minato-sensei." Kakashi clenched his fists. "What about the rest?"

"I have reason to think that the former members of Root who have re-joined the standard shinobi rank or my ANBU may have been brainwashed. Subtly discuss it with Ibiki, try to find out more." Kakashi nod.

"I will need you to coordinate your efforts with Tenzō and Yūgao. Their squads are trustworthy beyond doubt."

Kakashi nodded. "I will also have chats with my fellow jōnin."

"Very well. Inform my son as well. I know we aren't that close, but..."

"Asuma doesn't really like old Danzō." Kakashi shrugged. "Few do."

"Danzō doesn't need to be liked."

"Much will depend on who will be his opponent in the elections." Kakashi considered. "So, who are you nominating?"

Hiruzen leaned his head against his hand. "Now, wouldn't you like to know?" he asked, chuckling. "Well..."

Meanwhile, Elder Mitokado's House

"I confess I hoped that Hiashi-dono would give you a straight answer." Koharu said, sipping her tea.

"This is politics." Danzō evenly replied, while secretly feeling a little contempt for such naivety. There was no use alienating his closest allies at the moment though. "A straight answer would worry me much more."

"Were you able to discern what Hiashi-dono would do then? Any clues?" Homura asked, straitening his glasses. "You have a very perceptive eye."

'Oh, you have no idea, old friend. No idea at all.' Inwardly smirking, Danzō shook her head slightly. "Hiashi is very conflicted. He feels guilty for the death of his brother, obviously. Perhaps he may be annoyed for the insolence of the fox's Jinchūriki, but I fear a bigger part of him wishes the brat would really be able to change the Hyūga clan. What a stupid nonsensical sentimentality." he explained. "He defended Hiruzen as well when I mentioned he may have let Orochimaru escape years ago and I do wonder what his reaction will be when I present proof of this."

"So as it stands that we cannot count on the Hyūga's certain support. You know Saru has close allies, loyal to a fault." Koharu frowned. "The Aburame Shibi will stick with him, if not other than to spite you. And Nara Shikaku will as well... he is the Jōnin Commander and his two teammates shall follow his lead. Basically the majority of the clan will support Sarutobi."

"Mmm." Danzō shrugged. "We don't need to have the full support of the Great Council, but just enough to ensure my nomination. Elder Hitoshi was obviously on my side."

Koharu smiles in understanding. "I see. No one says, after all, that all the jōnin of a clan will vote like their clan-head, right?"

"Especially if we can get the Daymō and the minor feudal lords on our side." Homura spoke up. "I heard that several of the Fire High Councillors hold you in high esteem."

"You heard well." Danzō restrained a smirk. "Let's just say that some of them require services Hiruzen would not really approve of."

The two Elders nodded curtly.

"What about this Akatsuki Jiraiya mentioned?" Homura asked, worried. "Don't you think that even if the Uzumaki boy leaves they would come to look for him here?"

This time, Danzō did smirk. "Oh, I am counting on it."

May 21st 214, a couple of hours before Daw – Katora Residence

Naruto was honestly surprised he managed to get some sleep at all that night. He didn't really feel like he had rested well though. He supposed he had to thank his family's legacy – and begrudgingly Kyūbi's regenerative powers – for having enough energy to start the day.

And not just a normal day. He was to leave Konoha and start training hard today. In truth, the few hours of sleep he got had helped him feeling a little more relaxed. He was pretty much certain that he wasn't going to fall into Kyūbi's traps today, not since he was aware of the fox's machination.

Naruto let out a deep sigh.

"'to-kun." Akimi murmured at his side. "Stop thinking so loudly."

The boy couldn't help but chuckle. Sleepy Akimi was simply too adorable to resist. "Am I bothering you?"

"A little." she groaned. "Not everyone is as hyperactive as you, I do need some sleep."

"Sorry." Naruto mumbled.

"Gosh." Akimi started to stir. She looked at him with a concerned frown. "Still depressed?"

"Just thinking as you pointed out." Naruto shrugged. "And ok, I am little sad."

Akimi leaned on her elbow and looked intently at him. "I would be worried if you weren't." she mused. "But you look way more relaxed that yesterday."

"Yesterday's confrontation was therapeutic."

"And you are excited to start training, uh?"

"Would there be a point denying it?"

Akimi giggled. "I know you too well." she shrugged. "Since we are awake we may as well start packing. We'll need supplies... today is still market day, is it?"

Naruto nodded. "Yep, I think jiji wanted to keep everything going as if we weren't invaded. Having the market as usual is going to boost the mood of the civilians."

"Yeah, right." Akimi ruffled her hair and rubbed her eyes. "I am still too sleepy, I can't think properly."

"You go have a shower, I'll make us breakfast. Then you can take care of our food supplies and I'll think of weapons and everything else."

"Sounds like a plan." Akimi leaned forward and placed a butterfly kiss on his lips. "Keep your spirit up, Naruto. I am sure we will sort everything out."

He nodded and smiled brightly. "Yes, we will."

Konoha's market – dawn

Hinata had to force herself not to tremble, she was feeling extremely nervous. She would have expected her caretaker, Kō, to come with them or at least insist more members of the Branch House joined them. And Hinata knew that Kō disliked Uzumaki Naruto a lot, because he sternly scolded her the few times she let the fact she admired the blonde escape.

However, Neji had assured Kō he would protect her and that they would be much less noticeable without an official escort. Somehow, her cousin could be very persuasive. They were expected back to the compound within one, two hours maximum, and Hinata suspected Kō would send out a search party if they were late.

"Ah." Neji, walking a little behind her, said with a smug tone. "Seems like fate helped us in our endeavours this morning."

Hinata raised her eyebrows, a little baffled. Her cousins had changed deeply, it would seem, but apparently he was still a little obsessed with fate. Well, at least he wasn't hateful and angry anymore. She followed his gaze and saw Katora Akimi talking quite animatedly with clerk of the vegetable and fruit stand. They seemed to be familiar with each other.

"D-do y-you want to t-talk h-here?" Hinata almost panicked.

"Too public." Neji dismissed. "But she can help. Just let me..."

The duo approached. Akimi was holding a basked full of red apples, examining them with care.

"Are you planning a trip or something, Katora-san?" the clerk asked with an amused tone.

Akimi shrugged. "Have got an idea how much Naruto-kun eats?" she replied, launching an apple in the air. "We just got promoted, we have busy days ahead. Better be safe than..."

The girl quickly caught the apple back, at the same moment jumping on her right. She turned and tilted her head in surprise.

"Are you still sleepy, Hyūga-san?" she asked, evenly, to Neji who had just staggered near her, almost making her fall. Now, Neji Hyūga was as far as clumsy as you can get. Something was up.

"I apologise, Katora-san." Neji looked at the fair amount of scrolls the younger girl had collected at her feet. From what he knew of seals, she had already acquired a lot of supplies. "I was very intent in my task of protecting Hinata-sama."

Akimi noticed the genin's voice lacked that annoying arrogance he had before the finals. 'And Naruto strikes again' "No harm done." she moved her gaze to the nervous looking girl besides him. As she realised she was being observed, the blue haired kid started to fidget frantically. "Here to shop as well, I gather? The best products can be found only at the earliest hour, Hyūga-hime."

Hinata jolted. Did the girl just call her princess? It was an ancient custom of powerful clan, yes, but no one ever considered her worthy of it. Her sister maybe.

"Hinata-sama enjoys cooking very much." Neji explained.

"I see." Akimi nodded politely. She placed the basked down and casually sealed it away. "I think I am about done here, Hideyoshi-san"

"I am glad you left me with something to sell, Katora-san." the vendor joked.

"I was tempted." Akimi smirked at him. "But it would be impolite to prevent other people to shop. It seems like you already have new clients. I do have some special item requests for you if you don't mind acquire them for me."

Neji frowned. A special request for vegetables?

"Exotic spices again?" Hideyoshi shrugged. "It's good for business, Katora-san." he took the sealed scroll she passed him. "Always a pleasure."

Akimi bowed at him. "Likewise. I need to run to the butcher stand." she turned. "It was both nice and curious to see you Hyūga-san, Hyūga-hime." she nodded to Neji and Hinata. "I recommend the carrots and tomatoes, Hideyoshi-san has really excellent specimen today."

Akimi walked down the street and stopped, retrieving the small scroll Neji had slipped inside her pocket when he had almost fallen on her. She was extremely intrigued, both by the fact he had wanted to communicate and that he did so in such a sneaky way.

'Need to talk in privacy. Suggestions appreciated.' Akimi almost turned to look at the Hyūga pair in surprise. Several possibility and hypothesis started to form in her mind. 'Very intriguing.' With a smirk, she produced a scroll and, certain that Neji was intently watching her via Byakugan she started to write down the shortcut for her home, including the indications to find their secret backdoor.

Being sneaky was always incredibly fun.

Katora Residence, some time later – sitting room

"Back already?" Naruto asked, raising his eyes from where he was working on a genjutsu seal with one of her clones.

"I took all the time that I needed." Akimi shrugged, sitting down. "The message to my contact in the Great Council has been delivered."

"How is Hideyoshi then?" Naruto replied with a smirk.

"He is not my contact." Akimi replied.

"No, but he is your way to communicate with your contact. Special order of spices, really?" Naruto chuckled. "That got old after the third or fourth time I heard it."

"You love those spices."

"Yes, but by now Hideyoshi should know that order by heart." Naruto chuckled again. "You look pensive."

"We have much to think about, haven't we?" She launched a piece of paper at him. "But something quite peculiar happened at the market."

Naruto sighed. "Shino isn't here yet. Has he left the compound?"

Akimi shook her head. "Kaera hasn't said anything, but he is either sleeping or preparing."

"Maybe his father doesn't want him to come." Naruto sighed. "I am dangerous to be around."

"We are ninja." Akimi opened her hands. "You are being too melodramatic and pessimistic. Shino will come, I know it. Shibi-san isn't going to waste an opportunity for his son to train with a Sannin. You got an idea of how prestigious that is?"

"It all comes down to that, does it?"

"It's politics, Naruto-kun." Akimi shrugged. "Read that note."

"Who is this from?" Naruto asked. "What does it mean?"

"Hyūga-san." Akimi replied, crossing her hands under her chin. "And I have no idea... but the sneakiness of this is both thrilling and worrisome. I am going to set up extra privacy seals."

"Neji?" Naruto asked, frowning. "What would Neji want from us?"

"No idea, but it seems his defeat at your hands changed him." Akimi smiled. "You are really making a trend here."

"What about the Vault?"

"No." Akimi answered firmly. "Hyūga-san isn't coming alone. And while the young clan heiress seems honest and harmless enough, the Vault remains off limits to anyone who isn't a trusted friend or ally."

"And the queen of paranoia is back." Naruto clapped. "I was getting worried you felt guilty yesterday."

"Want ramen, 'to-kun?" she launched him a scroll. "Ichiraku was already open."

"SUGUI, dattebayo!" the blonde exclaimed.

Akimi giggled. "Thank the kami, I was worried you weren't your usual hungry self as well."

Naruto was already stuffing himself with a bowl. "That would never last."

And the duo laughed. Things would definitely turn for the better.

REVIEW ANSWERS

Anarchy in Dark Places: thank you so much for reviewing. I am feeling a little guilty you had to re-read the story, but I am very happy you are glad I am back and you liked the chapter. Hope this one was up to par. To answer you questions... The Council's role is quite (simply?) to nominate the Hokage's candidate. In general, then, it approves the Hokage's decision and laws in time of peace. Of course every member of the council holds a great influence over the village so ultimately they have great sway over the election itself: the Hokage needs the approving vote of the majority of the jōnin assembly (included jōnin level ANBU.) About Akimi and Rasengan... yes, it's definitely a possibility, although it will happen much later on during the Shippūden timeline. Wind and fire Rasengan... oh, I think Akimi's pyromaniac side would totally enjoy that.

noman09: thank you for reviewing. I am pleased you think my English is good. I guess that bad phrasing is inevitable because sometimes it happens I think of a phrase in Italian and translate it, as opposite to just think and write the sentence in English, if you understand my meaning. I am quite happy for the number of reviews I got and being myself a little wary of OCs I suppose I can't complain, right? Maybe it's also because the story isn't complete. Thanks again for you comment, I hope you enjoyed this chapter as well.

Rain-of-Jazz: thank you so much for reviewing! I am glad you like this story so much and sorry again for how incredibly late I was. I sincerely hope I'll finish this story and I have every intention not to let it die... I may stop for a long while, but I am not giving up. Naruto is rubbing off me a little. I hope you liked this chapter as well.

Kunai94: thank you for reviewing! I hope re-reading the story (it's quite long nowadays) is not too much of a bother. I hope you'll enjoy the new chapters.

TheNotSoPedoBear: thank you so much for reviewing. I am glad you liked the chapter. The confrontation about the Uzumaki was long overdue and you'll see that the Uzumaki legacy will be involved during the training. I am not sure what Itachi will do exactly yes, I do have ideas though. If a confrontation does happen, it will be quite sneaky. Itachi is still playing the part of the bad guy, after all.

kvothe08: thank you so much for reviewing. I hope you liked this chapter. Well, the training during the Search of Tsunade arc will be detailed, I reckon. I am more inclined to go for a time-skip and flashback for the training trip before Shippūden. Don't worry, when Naruto gets back his clothes won't be the only change. I didn't like the way he was basically at the same level after the training trip and then he got super-powerful in a short span of time with Rasenshuriken and Senjutsu. Hope you liked Hinata response.

NATSUxERZA: thank you so much for reviewing! I am glad you liked angry-Hiruzen. He may even pop back again in later chapters. About the manga... well, I don't really like the turn the story has taken. It has been a while, actually, ever since the start of the Fourth Shinobi War. I'll probably take inspiration from canon, that's all. Right now I only have a very vague idea of how the story will ultimately end, so it's hard to say.

Guest: thank you for reviewing. I hope you enjoyed this chapter as well.

Reymen: thank you for reviewing. I suppose I understand your opinion and I do remember a story when Naruto was basically insane because he had duplicated too many times, but personally I don't see the difference between Kage-Bunshin powers and several other overpowered jutsu (Sharingan anyone?). Besides, I like the idea of Kage Bunshin too much to give it up, sorry it's just a flaw of mine. Besides chakra defies logic in any case right? Thank you for giving the story a chance.

Heftig Einzelganger: thank you so much for reviewing! I am glad you like the story so much, let me know if the chapter is up to par. And don't worry, your support is already a big help!

Kyrial Arthian: thank you so much for your review. I honestly don't remember either if you reviewed before, but it doesn't matter. This one was a very good one, so many thanks. I am happy for your positive comments on the Hiruzen/Jiraiya vs. Akimi and Naruto conversation. Writing romance is probably the hardest thing for me, so knowing that my readers think it is realistic is always very nice. About the nicknames, I know what you mean. In the beginning I wasn't certain either but then they sort of grew on me. I never thought of Aki-chan, to be honest =) Perhaps I will change the way the call each other after the Shippūden time-skip, because 'mi-chan and 'to-kun are sort of childish nicknames in any case. I just have to come up with an alternative of sort, maybe even one not related to their actual names. (it's just that using English pet-names feels weird in the story, and I don't really know if there are Japanese one). About Hinata: really I surprised myself with that scene. It almost sort of wrote itself. I plan for some subtle conflict between her and Akimi next chapter, but nothing explosive. On the topic, I honestly like Hiashi's character. He is a very conflicted man, divided between his belief in tradition and his guilt/love for his family. Danzō spoke about him a little in the chapter and that is my idea as well, basically. I hope you liked my reasoning behind Shino going on the training trip. The final conclusions of the arguments (including the matter of the future Spy Master/Mistress) are going to covered next chapter.

Molly Grace: thank you so much for reviewing. I hope you enjoyed this chapter as well. I completely agree with your reasoning about Shino, which is why I've been conflicted about him actually going. I hope my reasoning in the chapter was convincing and you aren't too disappointed with my decision, but I do need Shino with his teammates. (I've got reasons XD) I've the same thoughts as you about clan politics, which is a bit of a bother because I need conflict. What you said about Tsume being tricky just made my brains wheels turns. Something interesting may come out of it. I am thinking Asuma would be a good jōnin representative in the Council, but I am not sure about it because he is the Third's son as well. Nevertheless, his role of Fire Guardian will be exploited. ;)

Skeleus: thank you so much for reviewing! I am glad you liked this chapter and I hope this one isn't disappointing.

ExecutionerKain: thank you so much for reviewing! I hope re-reading isn't too much of a bother, this story has become bloody long. XD And I forget some things about the earlier chapters as well. Yes, I do re-read my own story. XD I am looking forward to hearing what you think about this new chapters.

CHAPTER NOTES:

So, I planned for Team 7 to leave at the end of the chapter but stuff happened.

Shibi has pointed out that Danzō likes to brainwash people. Now Hiruzen and Jiraiya are all worried that some of those who they considered allies may be brainwashed. Also, I had no idea that Danzō had tried to kill Hiruzen when I first started writing the political intrigue, but my gosh it fits so well.

I wasn't sure whether Hiruzen confiding in Kakashi was believable, but in a way the jōnin is a little more reliable than Jiraiya. Hiruzen is afraid that Jiraiya may go berserker on Danzō and all of that. If Kakashi directly served the Third for years as an ANBU it makes sense that Hiruzen trusts him after all.

One of the Elder Coats mentioned the Fire High Councillors. These nice men are the direct advisor of the Fire Daymō, who being the weak and meek man he is (I mean, you saw his wife right?) is not able to take a decision for himself. More will be explained when the scene moves to Fire Capitol City. It may be a while actually.

On topic, I am thinking about clansfor the Great Konoha Council. I mean, canon clans are basically all allies of Hiruzen and followers of his philosophy. The Aburame obviously will stick with him, and so shall the Ino-Shika-Cho trio. I don't really see the wild and straightforward Inuzuka going with our old Danzō either. That leaves Hyūga and Uchiha, but still the balance is on Sarutobi's side. So, to create conflict I am going to introduce a couple of new (sort of) clans. I've got ideas, but if you have suggestion please PM me.

Always on politics, I am deciding who the jōnin representative will be in the Council. I am thinking either Kakashi – he is generally well respected – or Asuma (Former Fire Guardian, level headed). Of course they are both close to Sarutobi, especially his son Asuma, but I really can't think of anyone else.

I am also excited to think what you think about Shino and the reasoning behind him joining Akimi and Naruto. I hope it seemed logical enough. (I was undecided for a while, but in truth I have plans for Shino so I need him around Akimi and Naruto)

And lastly, some more Hinata for you. It's strange to write her – especially because I don't want to stress too much that she is stuttering and all that. But I must confess it's quite easier than I thought and I am starting to like her character. Got some ideas for that in the future...

The story is becoming massive, especially because I covered like 3-4 days in the Naruto World (the invasion happened on the 18th) during the length of basically 15 chapters. However I am going where the plot of the story is carrying me. I was thinking maybe of finishing this part and start a new one, sort of like the coronaches of Naruto and Akimi (and Shino) as chūnin, opposite to being genin. Let me think what you think.

Thank you again for reading and bearing with my always long author's note. I hope you enjoyed. Until next chapter

Next time up: last minute machinations, leaving and red clouds.
