I feel like I'm on this rush to get all my ideas written and published on her before I have any chance to fall sick to the nasty writer's block. So far so good. I've even been thinking about how I can add some elements of more current seasons of SPN. Hoping to get a Jack, Amara, Jodie Mills (already have ideas on this one), Donna, etc. If you have any characters you really think should be included please leave a comment or PM with their name! I cannot promise anything, just because there are so many characters, but perhaps some of them will spawn more "off-topic" other character chapters.
Hope you enjoy!
Dean woke up Monday morning with the largest grin on his face. He'd had that same grin all weekend. Not even the prospect of school could dampen his happiness. He walked down to the kitchen. His mom was rummaging through the fridge. His father was sitting with the newspaper in front of him, sipping his coffee, but he looked up when Dean came into the kitchen.
"You seem even extra chipper this morning."
John pulled up the newspaper and seemingly began to read.
"It's been a good day," Dean said.
John looked up at him. "You've been awake approximately, ten minutes."
Dean shrugged.
"I think its sweet," Mary said. She kissed dean on the head and squeezed his shoulder. She placed the milk in front of him. "First love is always the sweetest."
John shook his head in agreement. Mary walked over to him and John looked up at his wife and she leaned down to let him kiss her cheek. It was their morning ritual.
Dean wondered if his dad had woken up some days and been all grins too back when he first met his mom. From what they had told him their romance had been rather windwhirl. Her parents, or at least, Mary's father hadn't approved. But they hadn't let that stop them. Dad got in a pretty bad car accident after he had asked Mary's father for her hand. It was finally when Grampie Sam saw how much his daughter truly loved John that he finally gave his approval. He didn't know they had already eloped. Dean only knew that little fact because he cleared out the attic in their house as punishment when he and Benny stayed out past curfew playing pool. Their marriage license was dated before John had gotten into the accident. Bobby and Grandma D witnessed it. That was why he had been named Dean, to honor his grandma for supporting Mary in her choice. Of course, Grampie Sam never knew any of this. And Dean was sworn into secrecy ever since.
"I love Cass," Dean said.
He suddenly felt a moment of de-ja-vu from the time he had told his parents he liked a boy at this same table. But perhaps he had also over read this moment. His dad shifted his gaze from his wife to Dean, and Dean realized this was going to be worse then getting a punishment.
"You think you love Cass?" Mary asked.
"I know I do."
Dean wasn't sure where the strength was coming from. His heart was racing.
"Seems pretty quick," John said.
"John, we were only a couple years older then them when we met."
"That's not what I meant. But it is Mary."
"I still think its sweet. Are you going to tell him?"
"Not sure."
"Well you'll end up needing to, son."
"What if he doesn't feel the same?" Dean asked.
"I doubt he won't," Mary said. "Maybe he won't say it out loud as soon as you, but I bet he feels the same."
"How can I know that?"
"Dean, you have to trust that Cass sees as much in you as you see in him," John said. "He's a smart kid, and you two." John coughs and pulled up the newspaper again, somewhat blocking his face. "You make sense."
"Dad-"
"And you are going to bring him over to dinner soon. I need to have a sit down chat with the boy who's dating my son," John said. He turns the page of the newspaper. "Not exactly a conversation that I ever thought I'd have, but its going to happen."
"You're not planning on doing some creepy dad interrogation on him are you?"
"No, he isn't. Your father is just kidding," Mary said. She sits down next to John at the table. John puts the newspaper down.
"No, I'm not. Look…" John clears his throat a little. "I've been reading some books."
"Dad reading books, the world must be ending," Sam said, coming into the kitchen. He grabs a banana as John goes to jokingly smack him with the morning news. Eventually he sits back down and looks straight at Dean.
"I think it would be a good idea to sit down and talk about things."
"Things?" Dean asks, trying to lighten the mood.
"Dean-"
"Dad?"
"Dean, I think what your father," Mary starts, "what we think would be best is if we can have an open and honest conversation about what's going to happen in the future."
Dean feels the heat rise up to his face.
"If you two seriously believe I'm going to sit through another birds and bees conversation with you, you have another thing coming."
John throws his hands up a little.
"How many times do I have to say sorry? John asks. "Sorry, fishing trip with Bobby wasn't the right place or time. How was I supposed to know?" John asked Mary, who simply patted his shoulder.
Sam takes a bite of his scrambled eggs and then looks at Dean. "Wouldn't this technically be more like a bees and bees conversation, right?"
Dean choked on the sip of milk he had just taken.
"Samuel Winchester!"
Sam just grinned and poured himself some milk.
Dean couldn't believe this morning was going where it was. Could he just go back in time and not be so annoyingly open with his parents?
"Personally, honey, I think it would be good to meet with not just Cass, but with his family too." Mary said. Dean looked at her wide eyed. "No about bees! I promise! But we should talk with them about how we're going to handle the coming school year before the holidays get too busy. You might not be the only gay kid in the town, but you two are the only out gay kids that will be attending that school, and you're dating. That does have me nervous. We want to avoid more broken noses, don't we?"
"I guess," Dean said. He pokes at his food. "I just don't know with his Mom being so sick. But she did want to have tea with you."
"Oh how lovely. She seems like such a wonderful woman."
"She's pretty great from what I can tell. And Cass' dad is pretty chill, a little weird."
"Well, maybe I'll try to get something set up with his mom and then we can go from there."
"I still want to have a conversation with you and Cass too. We have some ground rules to set," John said.
"Dad, I promise-"
"Dean, all the books say I need to treat this like any other relationship. If you were dating a girl I'd set ground rules for you. I'd make sure you were a good role model for your brother." John points his fork at Dean. "Nothing's changing."
"Are you going to be this weird when I start dating?" Sam asked.
"I'll be lucky if I survive this."
"Thanks, Dad," Dean says sarcastically.
"Hurry up and eat so you can be ready on time," Mary said.
Dean takes another bite of some toast. He pulls out his phone and types a quick message.
Good morning! Heads up, my moms going to call yours today and figure out a time to meet. Plus my dad wants you to come to dinner at my house. Whenever is best for you though. I know you have to make sure someone is home. Anyway yeah.
Dean wondered how he should end the message. He wrote a couple words, deleted them, and then just wrote 'can't wait to see you soon' and sent it.
Without having to wait very long Dean heard the sound of a response text and looked at his phone.
It was just a smiling emoji. But it was just perfect.
This chapter was really fun to write. I've been wanting to write another all Winchester chapter for a while. I also think it's just super fun to write John trying to be as supportive a Dad as possible. I think there is so much out there in the world of literature and film that depicts negative relationships between parents and their LGBT children, I really wanted to show a more realistic-positive side. I without a doubt think John struggles with seeing Dean as an LGBT individual, but he's trying, and I think that interpretation of how this plays out is the completely human way things would be handled. Not perfect. Not without bumps. But hopefully, a lot of trying.
Thank you so much for reading!
