Of Eyes And Fangs
Chapter thirty four
Kagome hummed a lively tune while she placed pretty flowers around her new room. It didn't have color on the walls like her old one, but she liked it just the same. Hiei-san had even made a small window for her, so she could see the lovely red sky above her new home. At night the window let her have a perfect view of a trillions of twinkling stars, Kagome had never seen so many! She was fascinated by them, so much in fact that Hiei had caught the girl several times staying up late just to stare at them. He didn't get the girl's interest, but as it didn't bother him he let her be (aside from reminding her that she needed to sleep from time to time). Getting the tyke to bed was a challenging thing; Hiei hadn't been aware such a stubborn being could exist. When she thought he was gone Kagome would kick the blankets off and crawl off the futon towards the window. Hiei knew, and enjoyed startling her by speaking up from another part of the house.
The little girl didn't know how Hiei-san did it. It had to be because he was a wizard- a yōkai, she corrected herself mentally. Hiei-san never failed to do a funny thing with his eye when she accidentally called him a wizard, which happened more often than one would think.
Placing one last flower on the windowsill, Kagome skipped outside to a square patch of dirt near the back of the house. The human child squatted down beside it and reached into the inner pocket of her haori. Her hand closed around the small bag stashed there and pulled it out. A smile brightened her face at the sight of the tiny container. In her hand was a miniature burlap sack with a thin cord wrapped around the end to keep the contents from spilling. Hiei had given it to her that same day before leaving, along with specific instructions about what to do with it. The seeds inside were to be planted in the soil next to her and watered only once. "Don't play with them after that," The fire apparition had said, "what grows from those seeds will be a valuable food source, since you're too weak to eat anything else." He left after that, like he usually did most days. Kagome got the sense he was looking for something, but forgot to bug him about it when he was home, since he was busy teaching her interesting things about yōkai.
The soft soil was easy to work with. Kagome had no trouble making a few small holes for the seeds in her hand. She'd seen her mama garden tons of times, she knew what she was doing!
Mama… Wonder if she left papa already. The girl knew her father wasn't a good man, after all, none of the kids at the kindergarten had mean daddies that yelled all the time.
She pushed the thoughts of her parents away and focused instead on positioning the seeds just right in their respective holes. She wanted them to grow big and strong, so she had to give them lots of love and attention to help them out. Kagome patted the dirt firmly one last time before reaching over and grabbing the tin pail she would use to water them. I don't wanna give the baby plants too much water, she thought, keeping a tight grip on the bucket while she tipped it above the soil. When the dirt was to her liking, Kagome sat back on her haunches and waited.
And waited…
And waited.
Maybe they need help… The girl thought when the seeds showed no sign of sprouting. By then she'd shifted to a kneeling position in front of the dirt patch; it made it easier for her to press her hands down on the earth. She squinted and unconsciously stuck her tongue out in concentration. "Grow, grow, grow…" The tyke sang softly, her fingers wriggling in the dirt. There was a pink light all of a sudden, barely visible with her shadow cast on her hands. Curious, Kagome stared at it thoughtfully before resuming her chant. "Grow, grow, grow, grow~!" Kagome crooned happily and in response her hands glowed brighter than before. Her heart thumped loudly in her ears, bringing with it a familiar feeling of excitement.
And then she saw it. Tiny and green, a little sprout wiggled its way out of the dirt. Two, three, four more followed it, growing at a pace she'd never seen before. They went from teeny seedlings to saplings in mere seconds and kept on until they were bigger than her. Gaping in amazement, Kagome realized they were as big as her house.
Maybe she was a wizard.

SO, in case anyone was doubting it, Kagome has been stuck with Hiei (and vice versa) for around a month already. I wanted something not so psychologically altering to introduce Kagome to her powers, so there you have it.
