disclaimer: You all know the devastating truth.
"Dinner at the Rodriguez's?" Benny asked raising an eyebrow.
"Sure I haven't seen your parents since yesterday." I replied sarcastically
"I'm sure my mom has some new stories to tell ya."
"Oh no doubt, I hope its another one about you as a little kid." I said he scoffed and rolled his eyes.
"I sure don't."
"Aw come on I like hearing about you as a kid."
"But I can't hear anything about you as a kid."
"I was small, threw my toys at people and ran around without a shirt on." I said.
"Not much change, though I'd like to see you running around without a shirt on more often." he winked I scoffed and hit his shoulder.
"Declare another shirtless practice and maybe I will." he laughed and directed me to his house, hesitating before passing mine and then proceeding.
There was going to be a block party and they had already began to set up for it but of course Benny didn't want to eat too much of the junk food being served so he asked his mom to make something healthy to eat before hand.
We passed through the front door not even shutting the door when I heard his mom.
"Benny I told you to clean your room!" Mrs. R yelled as Benny walked into the house, "Desobediente Poco-"
"Toni's here!" Benny shouted to her, I bit my lip trying not to laugh. Mrs. Rodriguez came out of the kitchen and smiled at me.
"Hola Toni." I waved and then she turned her attention back to Benny. "DO not think think this gets you out of cleaning your room." she said pointing at him.
"I love coming here." I said letting the laugh escape.
"What time is dinner?"
"Dies Minutes so go clean!" she responded. He shrugged and headed towards his room and I followed.
"Guess the block party is going on in about an hour." I said watching him pick up some shirts.
"I don't know how my room gets dirty when you take all my shirts." he said throwing them into a drawer. "But yeah just gotta eat a little not good to eat all the junk."
"You're seventeen live a little." I smirked. He rolled his eyes and folded up a pair of pants. Then he moved on to the next pair.
"Wow it really is a mess." I muttered walking over some clothing and a book on the ground I picked it up. "This is from the library." I said opening the cover page and seeing the sign out card, I pulled it out. Jackson Elementary school, 1963. "From the second grade? You really do never clean your room." I dropped the book on the bed and he smiled shrugging his shoulders.
"I just forgot to return it I guess. Hey I got a question, what do you say about skipping out in the middle of the bonfire and hanging out?" he asked.
"I don't know." I said. It was only the second bonfire we had been able to go to, and last year was a lot of fun, but skipping out on it to hang with Benny sounded fun, its just that I wanted to be with a lot of people in case anyone was around. Clara wasn't an outdoor person but she had surprised me on more then one occasion, being alone with Benny wasn't the smartest move on festive days.
"Not the answer I want." Benny said in a sing song voice coming closer to me.
"Well its the answer you're getting." I responded mocking his tone.
"Come on say yes." he said showing his teeth in a small smile, I crossed my arms and glared.
"No."
"Come on."
"No."
"Come on, come on." he said lifting me up and over his shoulder.
"No, no, no!" I laughed as he dropped me on the bed.
"Come on Toni!" he said grinning like he does holding my arms down with his knees and tickling my sides.
"Benny stop!" I practically screeched.
"Say yes."
"NO!"
"Then I ain't stopping." he smirked attacking my neck and sides. I was stubborn so I found myself kicking and struggling under him until I had one arm free and punched him in the stomach knocking him sideways, off the bed and onto the floor.
"Oh shoot, Benny are you okay?" I asked leaning over the side. He roared like a dinosaur playfully and pulled me down on to the floor with him.
Landing on top of him I couldn't stop laughing.
"Say yes." benny said snaking his arms around my waist.
"No." I tried to push up from our position but he held me tight to him.
"Benjamin." I warned pushing on the ground again.
"Tonijamin." he mocked.
"I told you not to call me that!" I yelled, he laughed and held me even tighter so I was flat against him chin on his chest.
"You know Imma drag you there anyways. Don't make it against your will."
"Why can't you be the normal boyfriend that does what ever the girl wants?" I asked.
"You want someone like that? Go date squints." he joked his fingers sliding up the back of my shirt skimming the skin of my back. I jumped at his touch.
"Your hands are cold." I complained when he placed his hand flat on my back I flinched again. "Benny!" I scolded, his grin getting on my nerves.
"They'll warm up." now both hands rested on the small of my bare back his hands skimmed over my spine running up and down in slow motions, his rough and calloused hands from years of baseball felt perfect touching me but he was being annoying so he didn't need to know that.
His hands travelled higher, brushing over the fabric of my bra and he paused grinning like a seventeen year old boy would touching his girlfriends bra, I glared at him.
"What? I've never heard any complaints before."
"You are impossible Rodriguez." he rolled his eyes before pulling me up closer to his mouth and kissing me gently removing his hands from under my shirt to hold my neck and waist.
His lips slid over my own gently yet urgently, Benny was a sweet kid, but he was also insane and he showed both when he was around me.
I liked his soft side, it was something I saw a lot of, but I loved his wild side, it was a little more rare, when he wasn't surrounded by the guys.
Benny was kissing me harder now, lips holding mine longer harder, hand tangled in my hair as he held me to his hard body.
"Ahem" someone said from the doorway and I pulled my mouth from Benny's seeing his dad standing there. I felt my cheeks heart as the blush took over my face.
"Food." he said grinning. "I won't tell mom." he added before disappearing down the hall. I pressed my lips in a tight line trying not to feel embarrassed that Benny's dad just caught us kissing on his floor.
"Four years Toni, he knows we've kissed." Benny said standing up knocking me off him and onto the floor.
He offered his hand and I took it letting him pull me up before heading to the kitchen.
I looked outside and already the block party was pretty much set up, those moms could work fast, I even saw Smalls mom out there helping to set up the tables.
On Benny's table were two salads. I rolled my eyes but sat down and ate it.
"You have food from moms that probably slaved all day making outside and you want to eat salad." I said putting the fork back into my mouth.
"This is real food.' he said gesturing to the bowl. Ever since Benny took a health and nutrition class in Gym this year he's been obsessed with eating healthier and honestly it was getting on the teams nerves a little.
"This is what Rabbits and goats eat." I said.
"Goats eat tin cans."
"Not all the time."
"If not all the time then why at all?" he asked as If I would know putting more food into his mouth.
"I don't know." I said shaking my head. "Why don't you ask one?"
"I don't speak goat, I speak pig." he said.
"Pig?"
"I talk to Ham don't I?" he let out a breathy laugh and took another bite.
"Bad joke Benny." another bite and my salad was done, Benny finished shortly after and I helped him clean the dishes.
"Smack me with that towel Benny and I smack you with a bat." I threatened as he pulled the towel out of the soapy water wringing it out. He just smiled and whipped me with it anyways.
I grabbed some bubbles off the top of the water and blew them at him little suds sticking in his hair. He glared and took some himself smacking it onto my head as I tried to avoid him. I managed to grab the towel out of his hands and hit him with it.
The door bell rang and I ran to it to escape Benny who was still attempting to shove soap down my back.
"You're in a hurry. It's probably Mrs. Waldon and that women will talk to anything with ears." Mrs. Rodriguez laughed as I ran to the door still holding the towel.
"Anything to avoid being soaked." I replied before opening the door.
"CAPTAIN ATTACK!" I heard before being bombarded by water balloons. I let a scream escape as I held the towel up to my face but the water still soaked the rest of my body.
I heard Benny's loud laughter from behind me.
"WRONG PERSON!" I heard the voice of Tommy scream.
"Retreat!" Squints voice yelled I threw the towel down to see their retreating forms with water guns and balloons in their hands.
"I"M GONNA KILL YOU!" I yelled shaking my hair quickly.
"nuh uh uh, not in my house you go be like a dog outside!" Mrs. R said before shoeing me out the door, Benny's laughter was still heard as he ran behind me out the door towards the guys.
"When I get done with you you'll be able to see out of your ass!" I yelled.
"We wanted to get Benny not you!" Ham said looking back at me quickly.
"Yeah,well you got me!"
"That's my girl." Benny laughed catching up to me like I knew he would he started running backwards smirking. I glared at him and the boys were caught when they tried to get into Hams house banging on the door that wouldn't open.
"Open the door!" yeah yeah yelled.
"I can't its locked!" Smalls exclaimed back as I came to a stop at the bottom of the steps. They all turned, wide eyed to look at me.
"In our defense, it is inappropriate for you to be over at Benny's house at this hour." Ham said raising his arms. My glare worsened, "Shutting up" Benny was still grinning like an asshole and i wanted to turn the anger out on him. I wasn't really angry at them, but they were not going to get away with soaking me to the bone.
There was odd tint in the air, and I smelled my shirt, it didn't have a strong scent it was vague.
"Is this water?" I asked letting go of the fabric on my shoulder.
"You wish it was water." Squints joked my eyes widened and I jumped at them But Benny held me back.
"Whoa I'm kidding! It's water with just a little kick."
"Kick?" I questioned struggling in Benny's arms.
"We just put a little garlic in it nothing bad." Grover said slowly not sure as to how I would react.
"Garlic? You're kidding me right?" I asked Benny still holding me securely to him.
"Again It wasn't meant for you." Smalls said
"Yeah yeah, just be happy it wasn't paint."
"Do I look happy?" I asked.
"Sunshine go get changed, you can't injure them before meeting Smalls girl." Benny said letting me go
"What about after?" I asked.
"Go ahead." Benny said earning some rude names from the boys.
I headed back to my house and quickly showered and changed leaving my hair down and damp.
When I ran to outside I saw the boys all sitting around a table eating. They were laughing at some joke I assumed Squints was telling.
I don't think I could be more blessed, having these boys as my best friends.
I ran and joined them Taking a seat next to Benny and smalls.
"Miss anything?" I asked.
"You missed Ham eating three hot dogs." Yeah yeah laughed.
"Already?" I asked looking at ham.
"If Imma be a heavy weight champion I need some bulk."
"You got enough Bulk ham." Smalls said.
"Ate least I'm not eating the bean dip. Beans make me gassy."
"We know!" we all shouted.
"Hey kids!" Scotty's mom called to us we looked over to see her with a camera. "Say sandlot!"
"Sandlot!" we yelled and smiled leaning over the table and grinning.
"Oh wait just one more." She said winding up the camera.
'MOM!" Smalls complained.
"It's alright Smalls." Grover said giving a goofy smile. She snapped another picture and then was gone.
"hurry up and eat." Benny said getting impatient.
"Benny be patient It just got dark." I said looking around at the kids playing with sparklers.
"So what time is the bomb fire?" Ham asked.
"uh, I think around ten or something." I said.
"After fireworks." Benny said.
"Why are the fireworks are always before the bomb fire?" Squints said.
"Fireworks are fairly early because of the younger kids." I said stealing a fry from Ham.
"Get your own food, you need to gain some weight you're like a bean pole." Ham said through a mouthful of food.
"I will have you know I am not that skinny."
"Oh please you turn sideways and stick out your tongue you look like a zipper." Squints said.
"I look like a zipper?" I questioned.
"Hey, quit picking on my girlfriend." Benny said draping an arm around my shoulders.
"They've been picking on my for years and you say something now?" I asked benny smiled in return and kissed my cheek.
"Non of that while I'm eating!" yea yeah yelled throwing some chips at us.
"Four years guys! Get over it." Benny said.
"Nope never going to get used to it, you know how gross you two really are?"
"At least we don't make out in front of you guys." I shot back at him, "We could you know."
"Please don't." Squints said.
"Oh you always do with Wendy!" Benny said rolling his eyes.
"Wendy ain't always around now is she? I have a reason to, you see Sunshine all the time not like you have any catching up to do."
"I'm done eating." Smalls said pushing his plate away.
"So are they." I said standing up.
"No we're not." Ham said.
"well I don't see how you'll be able to eat after this." I said.
"After what?" ham asked raising an eyebrow. I smirked and grabbed Benny by the collar of his shirt kissing him harshly. "That doesn't gross us out that much anymore."
"I didn't mean that." I said after pulling away from Benny who was still wide eye'd not knowing what just happened.
"Then what?" yeah yeah asked.
I held up my hand telling them to wait as I started to 'cough' I picked up smalls water and took a drink before spraying it all over them and their food.
"Ew!" Grover yelled jumping away from the table.
"I'm going to say you all are done eating now?" I asked raising an eyebrow.
"I really hope you enjoyed your food Toni, cause it's going to be your last meal!" Yeah yeah yelled before pushing up from the table and running towards me, I took off running towards the sandlot all of them following in tow. I wasn't the fastest obviously, with Benny on the team, but yeah yeah was faster then me as well, since he stopped running like a duck. Grover might have been with those freakishly long legs but for some reason he was slower then squints was.
So running to the Sandlot Yeah yeah had tackled me to the ground rolling us over a few times until we landed with Yeah yeah crushing my ribs with his knee.
"I swear to god if Benny and her hadn't gotten together then her and yeah yeah would have." Ham said heaving for breath's his hand on his stomach and the other on his knee.
"Are we starting that again?" Benny asked annoyed.
"Yeah yeah . . . can't. . . breathe." I said in a strained voice.
"What?" he asked snapping his attention back to me.
"Leg! It's. . .crushing me!" he looked down at his knee and shifted his weight onto my gut which wasn't much better. "Get off! Timmy .. . .help." Timmy wouldn't pass up a moment to tackle Yeah yeah so he took it knocking the kid off me and onto the ground. I rolled to my side and took a deep breath before getting back up.
"Base up block heads." Benny said putting a ball into my hand and then handing me my glove.
"You know block head is not really the term of endearment." Tommy said heading to his position.
"Well it's what I'm calling you." Benny said before picking up the bat, I smiled and ran to him snatching the bat out of his hands. "What are you doing?"
"batting, you want to rotate the positions, well if you're batting we'll never get you out five times. You'll be batting all night." I said shaking the bat in my hand.
"Gimme the bat, sunshine." He said reaching for it I held the ball up to his chest.
"Go Pitch." I said not backing down. He took the ball from me.
"I haven't pitched in about a month." he warned walking to the mound.
"All the more reason for you to practice." I said setting up left handed.
"No way, set up right handed!" Benny said turning around to see me.
"Why?"
"I'll hit you, I pitch better to righty's."
"I'll take my chances Benny." I said hitting the bat on the plate.
He sighed and nodded before winding up and letting the ball fly towards me. Literally right at me. I ducked falling right to the ground.
"Shit, Toni you okay?" he asked I nodded and stood back up.
"Yeah how about pitching me outside?" I asked. He nodded and Ham threw him the ball again. The pitch came and I swung the satisfying crack of the bat and ball was heard and I started running to first watching as the ball soared over the fence.
"Oh and there it is! Sunshine Spena has hit it out of the park!" I yelled jogging around the bases as the guys kicked dirt and threw their gloves at me telling me to shut up. Rounding third I ran and touched home.
"Alright superstar just set up!" Ham said thrusting the bat back in my hands.
The game continued and went on for a couple more hours until the fireworks started going off. Smalls had been up to bat but wasn't even playing attention anymore as the fireworks illuminated the sandlot creating dull light to play in.
I looked up at the sky with the rest of them. I don't there was anything more perfect them a night game.
"Keep your head in the game Spena." Benny yelled from left field. I looked back to the plate to see that smalls had set up again. I smiled and wound up the pitch. Smalls hit It right down the third base line.
"Alright we should get going!" Ham said taking off his mask.
"But the game isn't over yet!" Benny complained.
"Come on Benny we'll be late." Squints said running in himself.
I shrugged and followed them out of the sandlot.
"You're late." Wendy said crossing her arms.
"Sorry, we had to finish the game." Squints said giving Wendy a quick kiss.
"But we didn't finish the game!" Benny exclaimed his words coming to a quick stop when I elbowed him in the stomach.
"And thats why we're late." I said pointing at Benny and walking over to the fire and sitting on a log. Benny joined me in a few minutes after saying hi to some people. He placed his arm around my shoulder and we sat watching the fire.
'I think this is the most I've seen you dressed up sunshine." Ross said.
I looked down at my jean shorts and t-shirt.
"I look like this everyday." I told him.
"Yeah but your hair's down." he said.
"And are you wearing perfume?" Wendy asked from beside me.
"no what you probably smell is garlic." I told her. She didn't ask why, the boys snickering was enough of a clue to what happened.
The bomb fire was basically gossip and some people drinking. It wasn't the most exiting thing ever. I knew Benny was bored, and he proved it when he leaned into me his breath tickling my ear.
"Wanna get out of here?" I looked back at the joking laughing kids and nodded. We stood up and headed to the other side of the clearing where there was a large hill that you could over look the ocean.
I looked over the water the lights that looked like stars on the land. Benny wrapped his arms around my waist from behind me. Resting his chin on my shoulder but not before placing a soft kiss there.
"I don't think we should go back." he said giving my waist a tight squeeze. "Just stay out here forever."
"Its a nice thought, but we both know we can't live without the sandlot."
"Then we can live on the sandlot." he said. I rolled my eyes and turned to face him, his hands not leaving my waist.
"You know I wouldn't even know about the sandlot if it wasn't for you." I said playing with the collar of his shirt.
'Yeah you would have, you found it on your own remember?"
"No I lost my memory of it when you knocked me in the head." I said he smirked. "But I wouldn't have played on it if it wasn't for you."
"Something tells me you would have played there no matter what. You would have humiliated all of us with your pitching had we not."
"You are correct." Benny reached out his hand brushing my hair behind my ear.
"Thank you for entering my life Toni." he whispered before placing his lips onto mine. My hands ran up his chest fisting the material of his shirt pulling him closer.
He chuckled and placed his hand on my neck grazing his thumb over the skin. Fingers spread over the small of my back massaging gently as his mouth and tongue worked on making me dizzy and wanting more from him.
"God Toni." he breathed resting his forehead on mine.
"Maybe we should go back." I whispered.
"In a minute." he whispered back, then leaned in and kissed me again with a firmness that made me weak in the knees. A minute happened to be a half hour and it was all soft hands and desperate kisses.
Benny's hand had slipped under my t-shirt flat on my back, the other stroked my thigh with a barely there touch.
The fingers of my hand had disappeared under the collar of his shirt my fingers drumming on his strong shoulder, while my other hand knotted in his hair.
"We gotta stop." Benny said pulling away from me breathing heavily, from the way he said it, it was the last thing he wanted to do.
"In a minute." I mocked leaning in to kiss him again, he brushed his lips over mine and then pulled away again.
"No Sunshine really, if we keep at it. . . I'm not gonna stop." he admitted. oh. Oh. My eyes widened as he pulled his hand out of my shirt and took a step back just far enough that he wasn't touching me.
"Well I guess we are seventeen." I said putting my hands in my pockets to keep from fiddling with them.
"You're sixteen."
"What ever."
"Look Toni, I'd be lying if I said I didn't want to. . . hadn't you, you know. . . thought about it." I could tell his cheeks were getting red but in the dark I couldn't tell for sure. "I just, I don't want to rush you into anything."
"And I'd really rather it not happen outside." I said a smile sneaking onto my lips. Benny chuckled and nodded.
"Yeah, that too."
I reached out my hand and took his running my thumb along the back of his hand. He looked at me and squeezed my hand.
"You're not the only one that's crazy about who they're dating."
"really?"
"Yeah, I mean it's been four years Benny. I Took health class so I know what it is I'm feeling."
"Then you also know that its not the right time?" he said looking into my eyes.
"yes."
"I know this is a weird conversation, But I do love you and I want to be with you. Just I agree not tonight, and probably not soon, but I'm really hoping one day." he said an eager edge to his voice. I laughed and nodded looking down at the dirt and then back up at him. "Let's get back." he laughed obviously noticing my discomfort.
"Do the guys ever ask you about us?" I asked as we began walking.
"All the time, don't ask for specifics, cause you know, ew. But they ask if we've done anything."
"And what do you tell them."
"I tell them the truth. That we can't keep our hands off each other." he said pulling me towards him, up and over his shoulder.
"I thought you promised not to do this anymore!" I snapped.
"Is it in writing?" He asked as I bounced along on his shoulder.
"Not that I can recall." I said smacking his back.
"Then I said no such thing."
"BENNY!"
"No need to shout I'm right here." he laughed.
"Put me down." I demanded smacking his back one more time but he ignored me and kept walking.
"Why are you so annoying?" I asked giving up and trying to ignore the shoulder pressing into my gut.
"I don't know, why are you so obnoxious?"
"I am not!"
"If you're not obnoxious then the dodgers aren't the best team-"
"Do not bring the dodgers into this!" I yelled.
Benny laughed and threw me on the ground in front of all our friends who just smiled and laughed at me being tossed like a sack of potato's.
"Yeah yeah keep laughing." I said glaring at them then took a seat on the log.
Benny went to sit next to me but I pushed him away. "Nuh uh no, you sit over there. Far away from me." he grinned and complied moving to sit next to Jessica Saunders and Ben Wither.
Grover took the opportunity to sit next to me. "You excited to see Smalls girl tomorrow?" he asked trying to start a conversation although with Grover we could talk about anything. He took out a smoke and lit it up, I rolled my eyes pulling the cancer stick from his mouth holding it in my own hand. "Hey!"
"The first time you tried this you coughed your brains out and looked green for three hours, why would you want to have one again?" I asked holding it as far away from me as possible before he took it back and took a long drag.
"feels good."
"Feels like death." I countered. Grover had started smoking this year, he didn't do it often since we didn't let him smoke in the sandlot but any other place he was willing. His brother would buy them for him, but also with his height he looked older then he was and could get them if the guy behind the counter was young or new. It wasn't the best habit and we knew that but we also knew he was going to do what he wanted anyways so we cautioned him then left it alone.
At first we didn't think he'd do it, then when he did we were certain he wouldn't do it again but he did, and six months later here we are sitting around a fire him smoking.
"I'll be fine."
I wanted to tell him that was bullshit and after the stunt pulled with the tobacco he shouldn't even be thinking about something like this but I kept my mouth shut. "So about smalls girl?" he was a lot smoother at changing subjects then I was.
"Yeah I am, I mean I think its good he has a girl. . ."
"But?"
"But, it bothers me that shes a girl he couldn't tell us about."
"I think he just wanted to keep her to himself for a bit." Grover said.
"Yeah, but why couldn't she know about us either?"
"I'm sure its not as bad as we think, he probably did tell her something." he said taking another long drag before blowing out the smoke through his nose.
"Yeah probably." I said resting my elbows on my knees and my chin in my hands.
"He wants what you have." Grover said suddenly.
"Huh?" I asked looking at him.
"Well he want's what Benny has."
"What are you talking about?" another drag and he answered.
"It's not insane to know that smalls has always looked up to Benny. Even know when we're seventeen. Smalls doesn't really covet anything Benny has anymore except one thing. I think he's jealous of you and Benny, your relationship. He want's something like that. Hell we all do."
"But I don't get it, the relationship Benny and I have revolve around you guys too."
"I think that's why he was scared to have her meet us right away, he wants her to like us, doesn't want us to scare her away." Oh, okay. I looked over at Benny who winked at me and then back to Smalls who sat there between Amanda and Wendy both not paying any attention to him.
"We better make sure it all works for him." I said Grover nodded.
"Lets just hope shes not insane." Grover smirked stomping out his cigarette.
