35; ...Of The End | Part Two
After hearing Stiles' promise, Cassidy gave him a short nod, knowing for once he was being honest with her. She had no doubt he would do the best he could to get them all out safely.
Seeing him nervously move from one foot to another, she knew he was itching to say more, but she wasn't in the right state of mine to talk to him. She gave him a small smile, then turned around and took a few steps away from him. She needed to be alone.
With her turned away, he looked over at her for a moment and tried not to take offense at her walking away from him. Deep down he knew he deserved it after lying to her for weeks. He deserved whatever she threw his way.
When he saw her reach up and wipe at her eyes, he looked away and silently cursed at himself. He had made her cry, something he had never wanted to do.
Looking over at the others, he saw Allison beg Scott not to leave the room while Lydia and Jackson mixed up ingredients to make a Molotov Cocktail for Scott to use against the alpha- or more like Lydia was doing the mixing and Jackson was staring at Cassidy and handing Lydia bottles when she asked for it.
At hearing Allison cry, Cassidy turned around and watched her friend kiss Scott. When she saw Scott heading for the door, she called out to him and took him by surprise.
He was even more surprised when she quickly crossed the room and threw herself into his arms to hug him. She might be pissed and a little scared of him now, but he was still her childhood friend who was going up against man-killing alpha. She was terrified and extremely worried about him.
"Come back to us." Cassidy whispered after she pulled back to look at him.
"I will." Scott promised as he gave her a friendly kiss on her forehead.
Cassidy flashed him a small smile. For a moment she remembered him as the boy she grew up with, the one who was like a brother to her. She honestly couldn't imagine her life without him in it because he had always been there.
Scott's eyes flickered over each of them and gave his friends a small nod, then opened the door and walked out of the room. As soon as he was gone, Stiles rushed over to the door and locked it, then turned around and looked at the group as they waited for Scott to return.
Cassidy wasn't sure how long they had waited when she turned and took a few steps toward the windows. She stared out of them and watched dark shadows dance across the pavement as a slight breeze blew the leaves on the trees surrounding the parking lot.
She was lost in her own thoughts when she heard someone walk up behind her; assuming it was Stiles, she softly sighed, still not ready to talk to him.
"Stiles, I said-"
"Not Stiles." Jackson interrupted her as he held up his hands.
"I see." She softly said, turning back to look out the window. "What do you want, Jackson?"
"You're closed." He stated.
"What?" She asked confused as she turned her head to look at him.
"You're closing yourself off from everyone. That's not good, Cas." He explained as he shot her a worried look.
She scoffed, then said,"You talk like you actually know me."
"I do." He quietly said. When she turned to look at her again, he added,"Just because we're not together anymore doesn't mean I just erased you from my mind, Cas. I remember everything about you."
Cassidy titled her head to the side as she continued to look up at him. She lowered her eyebrows in thought, unsure how to take his comment. Even though she was seeing the old Jackson more and more lately, she still wasn't use to it and unsure what to do about it. She knew she didn't want to be with him again, but could they actually become friends again?
She quickly looked away from Jackson and caught Stiles' eyes for a moment, seeing the hurt in them. With a sigh, she looked over at Allison, who was crying and freaking out still about Scott leaving.
Looking back at Jackson, she gave him a tight smile, then walked over to Allison to comfort her upset friend. Hopefully she could calm her down and keep her mind off of what was going on.
"I don't get this. I don't get why he's out there, and why he left us. And I can't- I can't stop my hands from shaking." Allison cried out.
"Shh, it's okay." Cassidy said, wrapping her arms around Allison. "Scott is..." She began to say as she caught Stiles' eyes, seeing his widen, afraid she was going to spill the secret.
Blowing out a small breath, she continued,"Scott's strong. He'll be okay and I promise he'll come back to us."
She knew Allison had a right to know what Scott was now and everything else werewolf, but she also knew now was not the time to drop it on her. She vowed to herself that if Scott didn't tell her soon, she would. She knew what it felt like to have people you care about lie to your face and she didn't want that for Allison, but first, she wanted to give Scott the chance to do the right thing.
Allison nodded her head at her words; Scott was strong, but was he strong enough against a killer? Could he actually go against Derek, who had already killed several people?
That was what she was scared of the most. Scott was just a high school student and Derek was a full-grown adult killing people, in her mind, Scott would have a hard time coming out on top.
For the next several minutes, Cassidy continued to hold Allison, who would quietly sniffle every so often, while the rest just stood around and waited.
Stiles would catch Jackson looking at Cassidy every so often, causing him to roll his eyes. He knew he had screwed up bad, but he had to believe he had a better shot of her giving him another shot before she would Jackson.
Lydia softly sighed when she saw her boyfriend look over at Cassidy again for the millionth time. She hated when he looked at his ex the way he was now- it always made her nervous.
Needing a distraction, she glanced over at the table where the bottles of chemicals were sitting and lowered her eyebrows as she wondered if Jackson gave her the right bottle earlier. Looking over at him, she cleared her throat to get his attention from staring at Cassidy again.
"Jackson, you handed me the sulfuric acid, right? It has to be sulfuric acid. It won't ignite if it's not."
"I gave you exactly what you asked for tonight." Jackson snapped, not liking that she was questioning him. He knew why she was really asking, she was mad that he kept looking at Cassidy and wanted to knock him down in front of her.
"Yeah. Yeah, I'm sure you did." Lydia mumbled, not wanting to fight with him.
The group was quiet for a few more minutes until they heard a loud noise; a loud animalistic growl. Cassidy glanced over at Stiles with wide eyes, silently asking him if that was the monster they were hiding from. Stiles answered her with a nod, but said nothing out loud.
Jackson, Lydia and Allison looked at each other, too scared to question what that noise was, but it did make Allison's worry for Scott intensify. She jumped down from the table she had sat on with Cassidy, and took a few steps toward the door before turning back around to face the group.
"Where's Scott? He should be back by now." She questioned as she rubbed her hands up and down her arms.
Cassidy opened her mouth to answer, but before she could say a word, they heard a noise at the door. She and Allison rushed over to the door and saw a shadow outside. Assuming it was Scott, they began to beat on the door and call out to him.
Allison reached down to open the door and noticed it was still locked. She tried to unlock the door, but something was stopping her. She began to beat on the door more and screamed out in fear for Scott. She couldn't understand why he wasn't unlocking the door and coming back inside with them.
"Stop. Stop!" Lydia said, rushing over to the two girls. She waited until Cassidy and Allison looked at her, confusion on both of their faces, then added,"Do you hear that? Listen!"
The five teens inside all turned to look out the windows and breathed out a sigh of relief when they heard police sirens. They rushed over to the window and saw the sheriff's car with a few other cop cars pull into the parking lot.
Turning her head to the side, Cassidy saw Stiles standing behind her. She closed her eyes and took a deep breath, then slowly released it when she felt Stiles lay a hand on the small of her back. She glanced over her shoulder to look at him at the same time he looked down at her.
The two locked eyes for a moment, before he cautiously reached out to push a lock of hair behind her ear. He flashed her a small smile as he whispered,"We made it."
"Yeah we did." She whispered back with a small smile of her own.
Several minutes later, the teens were released from the classroom and made their way to the parking lot. Scott, Stiles and Cassidy talked to the sheriff for a few minutes as he asked them over and over again if they were okay, before questioning them.
Once he was done with them, he moved on to Jackson, Lydia and Allison. Leaving the trio alone for a moment. The two boys looked at Cassidy, neither one knowing where to begin. They knew they screwed up and owed her the truth, but before either boy could say a word, she held up a hand to stop them.
"Look I know we all need to have a long heart to heart, but not now. Right now, all I need..." She began to say as she took a deep breath, trying to slow down her racing heart. "Right now, all I need is hours and hours of sleep. I want to just forget this night ever happened, but I know that'll be impossible. I know every time I close my eyes I'll remember it."
"I'm sorry." Scott said, hating to put his best friend through this. "I was just-"
"I know you only wanted to protect me. But you lied to me." Cassidy interrupted him. Looking from Scott, over to Stiles, she added,"Both of you."
"We're sorry." Stiles said.
He opened his mouth to say more, but before he could, his dad called out to him wanting to speak to him and Scott a little longer. He turned to look at his dad and held up a hand to tell him he would be right there.
Turning back to look at Cassidy, he softly said her name to apologize again, but before he could speak she cut him off.
"You two should go. We'll talk later."
Without another word to them, she turned to walk across the parking lot where her car was parked. She pulled the keys from her coat pocket and folded her arms across her chest. She was halfway there when she heard Stiles yell out of her and run toward her.
"Stiles-"
"I know. I know you said not now, but I can't leave things like this, Cas." Stiles interrupted her.
Reaching out to lay his hand on her arm, he softly caressing her skin and cleared his throat, trying to get rid of the lump that formed as he wondered if this was the last time he would be able to touch her in this way.
His voice cracked as he added,"I don't want to lose you. I can't lose you."
Cassidy didn't say anything as she bit her bottom lip to keep the tears from spilling from her eyes. She turned her head, finding it harder and harder to look at him. She hated this. She honestly hated what she was about to do, but she had to. She couldn't be with someone she couldn't trust.
"But I am, aren't I? I'm losing you." Stiles mumbled as he read the look on her face. He felt tears fill his eyes and reached up to brush them away as he tried to plead with her,"Cas, please... "
"I'm sorry, Stiles." She softly said as she turned her head to look at him, a few tears rolling down her face. "You told me no more lies. You promised there was nothing else, but you lied, again."
"I know, but-"
"But nothing, Stiles." She interrupted harshly. She took a deep breath to control her anger, then added a little softer,"I can't trust you, and if I can't trust you, then I can't forgive you and I can't forgive you then..."
"Then what?" He asked when she paused.
"I can't be with you." She whispered as more tears fell down her face.
"No, Cas, just... no. Just, give me-" He stuttered out, his eyes wide.
"Give you what? Another chance?" She guessed. "I already did and I can't do that again. Not right now."
"But-"
"I'm sorry, Stiles." She cut him off. "I gotta go."
"Cas..." He called out as he reached out to grab her arm to stop her. He felt like if she walked away now, he would never get her back. He needed her to stay, he needed to fix things.
"I gotta go, Stiles." She repeated. Her tone was low and pleading as she added,"You got to let me go, Stiles. Please."
Stiles shook his head at her request. The last thing he wanted to do was let her go, he knew when he did that meant it was official over. When he heard her quiet ,'please', he knew he had to respect her wishes. He looked at her for a moment longer then reluctantly released her arm.
Cassidy gave him a short nod of thanks, then turned and walked over to her car. Stiles watched as she slid behind the wheel and turned the car on. He couldn't tear his eyes away until he saw her pull out of the parking lot and the tail lights disappear.
Blowing out a breath, he turned to walk over to his dad. Halfway there he paused and glanced around the parking lot. Since Jackson and Lydia left- as well as Allison after her dad picked her up- the parking lot was mostly empty except for his Jeep and the cop cars. That's when he realized another car was missing; Derek's car.
He didn't know if that meant Derek was alive or if Parker drove it away. The last time he saw her she was facing off with the alpha while he and Scott took shelter inside the building.
He hoped the missing car did mean she escaped. While they ran for their lives on the inside, he had almost forgot she was there. He knew it was destroy Cassidy to lose her sister. It would destroy him and Scott as well, they always viewed Parker as family.
Looking in the area he had last seen her, he thought to himself that she had to be okay. She just had to be okay.
•••
Parker groaned out as she shifted around a little. Her whole body was in pain, she felt like she had been ran over by a big truck or something. She thought back to what happened, trying to figure out how she ended up in this very bad, intense, pain.
Her mind flashed back to being at school. In her mind, she saw the alpha stick his claws in Derek before throwing him against the building. She squeezed her eyes shut and whimpered out as that imagine ran through her mind over and over again. Derek couldn't be dead though. He just couldn't be. She could not lose him.
"Be still." She heard someone mumble from beside her.
She snapped her eyes open and turned her head to the side and saw Derek sitting beside her. He was holding her hand and trying to take away as much of her pain as he could.
"Derek?" She questioned, her vision blurry for a moment.
"Who did you think it was?" He asked back as he raised his eyebrows at her. "Someone else I should be worried about?"
Parker rolled her eyes at his teasing, then groaned- it even hurt to move her eyes.
Glancing around, she realized they were in his hideout in the subway cart. Looking at him again, she asked,"What happened?"
"What do you remember?" He asked in concern. For a moment he was worried she had hit her head so hard she lost her memories.
"I saw- I saw the alpha stab you and toss you aside." She said, her voice cracking. Even if she could see that he was fine now, the thought of losing him still upset her.
Clearing her throat, she continued,"Then I told the boys to run inside and told them I would take care of it."
"Well you didn't. You almost got yourself killed." He scoffed as his eyes flashed at her for a minute. He didn't mean to snap at her, but hated the thought of her getting hurt.
"What have I told you, Parks? I told you not to go after the alpha, but what do you do? You go after the alpha."
"Seriously, Derek? You're going to yell at me now while I'm laying here in pain." She said back as she shot him a look.
The two stared at each other for a moment, before she flashed him a sweet smile and added,"But thank you for taking away some of the pain. It's helping."
Derek gave her a small smile before he leaned down to press his lips against hers for a soft kiss- just needing to feel that she was alive and well. She reached up to run her fingers through his hair as she deepened the kiss for a few minutes longer.
He pulled back to look at her and brushed a lock of hair from her forehead. "You're an idiot. You know that, right?"
"Thanks, babe, I love you too." She sarcastically said as she playfully tugged on his hair.
He softly chuckled at her comment, then lowered his head for a moment to kiss the inside of her wrist. Raising his head to look at her, he said,"You know what I mean.
"You can't keep going up against this alpha. It's going to get you killed and I can't... You are all I have left, Parker, I can't lose you."
"You won't." She promised him. She looked up at him and smiled until the night events crossed her mind again. She gasped, her eyes went wide as she said,"Oh, my god, Scott and Stiles! Are they okay? Did the alpha catch them?"
She let out a groan as she tried to sit up, but Derek pushed her back to lay on the bed. "Stop! Just lay back and relax. I couldn't take all the pain. You need to heal."
"But Scott and Stiles-"
"Are okay." He interrupted. "Everyone made it out of the school okay."
"Everyone?" She repeated. "Everyone who?"
Derek glanced away to avoid her eyes. He knew she was going to freak out when she finds out that her sister was inside the school, but he had to tell her. They couldn't have secrets between them.
"Everyone who, Derek?" She asked again, starting to get angry.
"The Argent girl showed up. That jerk that's been harassing Scott drove her there with that redhead he's dating." He said, wanting to save Cassidy for last. "And..."
"And who?" She snapped, when he paused.
"And Cassidy." He answered quietly, hoping she wouldn't hear, but knew she did when he heard her gasp.
"What?" She yelled as she tried to sit up again, biting her lip to keep from crying out in pain. "My sister is there! Is- did anything happen? Is she okay?" She asked without taking a breath.
"She's okay."
"I-I gotta go to her. I got to at least call her." She mumbled as she glanced around looking for her phone. "Where the hell is my phone?" She snapped as she looked over at Derek.
Derek watched her for a moment, wishing she would just lay back and relax, but knew that was not possible now. He raised his eyebrows and looked over at the other side of the room, where he had laid her jacket and phone on top of an empty wooden crate.
Parker turned her head to look at the direction he was looking in and saw her phone. She clenched her jaw and took several deep breaths, trying to breath through the pain as she stood up from the bed and took a few wobbly steps. She made it to the end of the bed before she gave out and sat down on the edge of it. She looked over at Derek, her eyes pleading with him to get the phone for her.
The two stared at each other, having a whole conversation without even saying a word, until Derek finally rolled his eyes and walked across the room to snatch up her cell phone.
He tossed it onto the bed beside her as he mumbled,"Here. The damn thing's been ringing for hours anyways."
"Oh, my God." She breathed out as she checked her phone. She had several missed calls from Cassidy, as well as a few text from Scott and Stiles asking if she was okay.
"Why didn't you answer?" She snapped as her head jerked up to look at Derek.
"And say what exactly?" He asked sarcastically.
"Good point." She mumbled, her voice barely above a whisper.
She looked down at her phone and sent the boys a quick text back, then looked at all the missed calls from Cassidy again and wondered how she was going to explain this.
"Maybe you should just text her." Derek suggested, knowing what she was thinking. "Tell her you're out of town for a few days while you stay here and heal."
Blowing out an annoyed breath, she looked up at him and said,"You mean lie to her? Lying is all I have done since I came back. I can't keep doing that to her, Derek."
"What are you going to say then?"
"I don't know." She answered honestly as she called her sister back.
She placed the phone against her ear as she nervously looked up at Derek. She really had no idea what she was going to say.
She assumed while she was in the school, she knows the truth about everything now and is scared. She knew Cassidy probably had a million of questions and she wanted to answer them, but not over the phone. They needed to have a long talk though, and very soon.
Knowing how worried she was, Derek walked over to the bed and sat down beside her. He reached out and grabbed her hand and gave it a squeeze as they waited for Cassidy to answer
•••
Cassidy slowly walked down the stairs as she looked down at her cell phone. She called her sister's number again for what felt like the hundredth time since she made it home.
Earlier when she walked in the front door her dad was waiting for her. He had received a call from the sheriff, telling him what happened at school. Her father had a million of questions for her- most she couldn't answer, then after checking her over to make sure she was okay, he left to head back to work.
She wished she could say she was surprised, but she really wasn't. Work had always been more important to him than his family and an attack on his daughter wasn't going to change that.
For the first hour or so after he left, she stayed in her room as she waited for Parker to come home. She was usually okay with being home alone, but not tonight.
Unfortunately for her, Parker never showed up, which was why she was now blowing up her phone to reach her.
"Parker, it's me again." Cassidy said over the phone with a sigh when her voicemail picked up again. "Where are you? Something happened tonight and I need to talk to you. You said if I needed to talk to call and I'm calling. I've been calling over and over again, please call me back. Please."
After ending the call, she went into the kitchen to get something to drink; some strong liquor would be perfect, but she settled for a bottle of water.
She grabbed a bottle from the refrigerator and walked over to the counter in the middle of the room. She sat her cell phone down on top of the counter, then turned to look out the window into the backyard as she took a big swallow from the bottle.
Seeing a shadow pass by, she quickly pulled the bottle away with a gasp. She glanced around the empty room and felt her heart race. She was worried it was the alpha coming back to finish what it had started earlier at school.
The bottle dropped from her hand, but she ignored it and the water spilling out as she raced across the room to shut the kitchen light out, then grabbed a big knife from the wooden block on the counter. She raced back over to the counter in the middle of the room and kneeled down behind it to hide from whoever was outside.
She silently cursed herself when she heard the back door slowly open and realized she forgot to lock it when she returned home. Hearing someone enter the room, she peeked around the corner and was about to scream until a familiar voice called out her name.
"Isaac." She breathed out, feeling relieved to see it was him. She quickly stood up and dropped the knife, before rushing across the room and throwing herself into his arms as a fresh set of tears fell down her face.
"Shh, it's okay. I got you. I got you, Cas." He whispered as he held her in his arms. He felt her shaking and laid a hand on the back of her head as he continued to whisper words of comfort.
Cassidy stayed in his arms a few extra minutes, her face buried in his chest, then pulled back to look up at him. He softly smiled at her as he used his hands to brush away the tears on both of her cheeks.
"Are you okay?" He quietly asked.
She slowly nodded her head, then said,"You just scared me. I didn't know who was coming in the house, I thought it was a... I just didn't know who it was."
"I'm sorry I scared you." He said, not catching her almost slip up.
He carefully wiped away a tear from under her eye, then said,"I was going to throw something at your window, but then I saw the kitchen light go on. Figured I would just knock on the door, but then I thought that might scare you."
"So you figured you would just walk into my house." She teased with a small chuckle.
"Yeah, it wasn't my smartest plan." He admitted with a laugh of his own. He turned serious as he looked down at her and said,"I just wanted to check on you. I heard about what happened at school."
"Yeah that wasn't a pleasant evening." Cassidy said with a hint of sarcasm as she turned and took a few steps away from him.
"What happened?"
Cassidy blew out a breath, not sure how to answer that question. She wasn't going to lie to him- that much she did know. She wanted to be honest with him, but was too tired and drained to get into it all tonight.
"It's a very long story and I'm too tired to tell it now. I'm sorry, Isaac."
"Hey, it's okay." He said, walking over to her. "I completely understand. From what I heard you all went through a lot tonight."
"Yeah. A lot." She breathed out as she looked down at the floor and remembered everything that happened; running from an alpha, finding out the truth, fearing they were going to die and breaking up with Stiles. It was all too much.
"Where's your dad and Parker?" He questioned, when he realized they were alone in the house.
"Dad went back to work and I haven't been able to get in touch with Parker." She answered.
Wrapping her arms around herself, she glanced around the empty room and said,"You know, it's funny, these past six years I have been alone a lot in this house; with mom gone, dad always at work and Parker leaving town, and it didn't bother me much.
"I was okay here alone because I was never really alone. I had Scott and Stiles, but now I can't count on them and it's like suddenly, I can feel it now. The loneliness. For the first time in a while I feel alone."
"You're not though. I'm here for you, Cas, I'll always be here for you." He said, reaching out to lay a hand on her arm and giving it a small squeeze.
Cassidy smiled at him as she laid a hand on top of his, then said,"You are, aren't you? You are always there for me."
Isaac smiled back as he ran his hand up her arm and rested it on her shoulder as he looked at her. He really looked and saw how scared she looked. He saw how badly she hated being in this huge house alone.
"Do you uh... I can stay with you tonight, if you want?" He suggested, hating the thought of her being alone all night.
Shaking her head, she said,"No, I couldn't ask you to do that, Isaac."
"You're not asking, I'm suggesting."
"What about your dad?"
"He's out for the night and even if he does get up, he won't check my room."
He saw his dad pass out with his own eyes not long ago before he snuck out and came to her house to check on her.
Cassidy thought about the offer and wanted to say yes, but was worried about getting him in trouble again.
As she shook her head, he moved his hand over to rest on the side of her neck and lightly caressing her skin. She blew out a soft breath and looked up at him as he said,"Let me do this for you, Cas. Let me be there for you, let me be-"
"My Superman." She breathed out with a smile.
"Yeah. Your Superman." He repeated as he returned her smile. "What do you say?"
Cassidy bit her lip in thought for a moment, then began to smile at him as she nodded her head. She opened her mouth to tell him to stay when she heard her cell phone ringing.
She quickly grabbed the phone and breathed out a sigh of relief when she saw it was Parker calling her back. She told Isaac to hold on, then walked out of the kitchen and into the foyer where she could have privacy, but still see Isaac if she wanted to.
"Parker where are you?" Cassidy asked when she answered the call.
"I'm with Derek." Parker answered honestly.
"Parks, something happened tonight. Something bad and Derek is in a lot of trouble." Cassidy said in one breath.
"What do you mean?" Parker asked confused as she glanced over at Derek. He had not told her this part of the story.
"There was murder at the school." Cassidy quietly said, not wanting Isaac to overhear until she could tell him everything else. "Scott and Stiles said it was Derek that did it. They said, he killed the janitor tonight and everyone else recently."
"Damn them." Parker breathed out as she closed her eyes for a moment. She couldn't believe they would throw Derek under the bus to keep their lies going.
"Cassidy, listen to me. I promise you, Derek hasn't killed anyone-"
"I know." Cassidy interrupted her. "I learned a lot tonight, Parker, a lot that I need to tell you."
"Okay. Give me a few minutes and I'll be right there." Parker said, ignoring the look Derek was giving her. She bit her bottom lip to keep from yelling out in pain, but before she could stand up, Cassidy caused her to sit back down with one word.
"Don't"
"Don't? What do you mean, don't?"
"I mean don't come home tonight. It's already so late and I'm tired. I just want to sleep. I'm not up for a long talk now." Cassidy explained.
"I don't want you to be alone, Cassie." Parker pointed out, assuming their dad was gone. She, like Cassidy, knew he was almost always at work.
Turning to look in the kitchen, her eyes landed on Isaac. She smiled as she watched him look down at the floor, then said,"I'm not alone."
"Oh! Is dad actually there?" Parker asked surprised.
"No. Isaac." Cassidy said, the smile on her face growing into a big grin.
"Have a good night, sis." Parker said, smiling. As long as Isaac was there, she knew her sister would be safe. It was plain to see- to anyone but Cassidy- that Isaac was crazy about her and would protect her as much as he could.
"Night, Parks." Cassidy said, ending the call.
Pressing her cell phone against her chest, she stood still and watched Isaac a little longer. Not only was she glad he was in her kitchen, but she was glad he was in life in general.
As long as he was there, she knew she would never truly be alone again.
