Tokyo Vampire
Sirens split the night, heading towards the sight of the accident that had just occurred at the construction yard. In said construction yard, two teens lay, one slumped against the wall covered in blood, while the other lay under a pile of metal, clearly dead. The other teen however was just barely clinging to life and that was exactly what the figure standing over him was hoping for.
"You won't die this night, Ken Kaneki," said the figure, leaning down and opening its mouth, revealing a set of long, sharp fangs.
Kanekis eyes snapped open, shooting upright with a gasp, looking around wildly, only to relax a second later as he recognised the hospital room he had been staying in for the past week after being attacked by Rize. According to the Doctors, he had been lucky and, despite the fact he had been covered in blood when he had been found, his wounds had been deep but not fatal, which was odd because he distinctly remembered being stabbed clean through the stomach. He was just in hospital for observation to make sure that he had recovered from the bad case of concussion and blood loss he had suffered. He glanced at the window, only to flinch as the bright light from outside burned his eyes. Ever since the accident, the light of day had hurt him far more than was normal. Just looking at it burned his eyes forget being exposed to it. He had made the mistake of allowing his hand to touch sunlight and it had felt like he had stuck his hand on a lit hob.
The Doctors were at a loss to explain why he was suddenly unable to handle direct sunlight, although they did find that it was only direct sunlight that hurt him and clothing was enough to keep it away. Another change was the boys appetite, it had gone from normal to almost none existent. Oh, food still tasted fine, but he just didn't feel hungry at all. Instead he felt thirsty. His throat burned almost constantly and nothing he tried would diminish the constant burn. He didn't tell any of the Doctors about the strange feeling as he felt it wasn't really important. The burn was a little distracting, but not painful or even that annoying, he just attributed it to the trauma like the Doctors did with his decreased appetite.
Kaneki didn't have time to be worried about stuff like that though as today was the day he was finally getting out of hospital. The Doctor gave him one last check up, before giving him his clothes and sending him on his way. Kaneki flipped his hood up and shoved his hands into his pockets, before stepping out of the door, wincing as the bright sunlight stabbed into his eyes. The teen took a breath, before stepping fully into the sun and heading in the direction of home. As he did, he passed a tall, black haired man in a long, black coat and sunglasses who was leaning against the gate post of the hospital, smoking a cigarette.
"Hurts, doesn't it?" said the man as Kaneki passed him.
"What?" asked the teen, looking at the man in confusion.
The man eyed him for a moment, before shaking his head and muttering something under his breath in a language Kaneki didn't recognise.
"You don't know, do you?" he asked.
"Know what?" demanded Kaneki, "Who the hell are you?"
"De necrezut," said the man, shaking his head, "It's carelessness like this that makes life difficult for us!"
He sighed and rubbed his head, before turning back to Kaneki.
"Look kid, if you want to know whats happened to you then come to the abandoned theater in the 20th ward tonight. Ask for Peter Romanov and make sure you come alone."
The man dropped his cigarette and walked away before Kaneki could ask him anything else. As he walked past him though, Kaneki caught a whiff of bitter almonds coming from the man. Before he could chase after the man, he was distracted by his phone going off, allowing the man to disappear into the crowds. Kaneki cursed as he fished his phone out of his pocket and saw the text from his friend Hide inviting him to their favorite hang out, the steakhouse Big Girl. Kaneki quickly texted back with confirmation, before putting the odd man out of his mind and heading towards the restaurant.
When Kaneki reached his destination it was to find his friend waiting outside the door for him. Hideyoshi Nagachika, also known as Hide by virtually everyone, was an 18 year old boy with messy, strawberry blond hair and brown eyes. He usually wore brightly coloured clothes that matched his personality.
"Yo, you look well," said Hide in way of greeting as Kaneki approached.
The teen smiled brightly at his friend, before the smile slipped slightly as Hide slung his arm over his shoulders and Kaneki caught the scent of wet dog coming from his friend. He quickly put the odd smell out of his mind however as the two teens entered the restaurant and were immediately greeted by the cute girls that worked there. In short order they were given their table and gave their order as they discussed Kaneki's recent brush with death.
"It sure sucks that Rize died like that," said Hide, "And damn lucky that you survived with so few injuries."
Hide caught the look on Kanekis face and quickly apologized for his flippant comments.
"No, its fine," said Kaneki, distractedly.
"Thats right, I still haven't told anyone she was a Ghoul," he thought as he looked away.
As he did, he caught sight of the waitress bringing them their meals and focused on her neck. As he did, all the sounds around him seemed to fade away as he got the feeling that he could practically smell the blood flowing through her veins. He was faintly aware of a strange, sliding sensation in his mouth, before he felt a hand touch his arm. He shook his head, dispelling the odd sensation.
"Hey, are you OK?" asked Hide, looking worried.
"Yeah, just a little distracted," muttered Kaneki as the waitress placed the food on the table.
Hide didn't look convinced, but dropped it as the two friends began to eat. Like with the food in the Hospital, Kaneki found the food a little unappetizing, especially the vegetables, although the red meat was a lot easier to stomach and for some odd reason, the tomatoes. Hide attacked his food with a passion, as usual, making short work of the massive stake he'd ordered, before sitting back with a sigh of contentment.
"Excellent as usual!" he called.
"Yeah," said Kaneki, "Really good."
Later, Kaneki found himself in his room, laying back on his bed, staring up at the ceiling, wondering what in the hell had caused all these changes in him. While most were fairly superficial, that sensation while looking at the waitress was a little worrying. The teen reached up and probed his mouth around where he had felt the sliding sensation, only to freeze as he felt something under his gums. Kaneki shot out of bed and dashed into the bathroom where he tugged his lips up and looked at his gums in the mirror. At first he didn't see anything, before, to his horror, a new set of teeth seemed to emerge from his gums to rest over his normal teeth. These new choppers were completely unlike anything that should be in a human mouth. They were long, sharp and clearly meant for biting through flesh with ease. The fangs retracted as Kaneki took a step back from the mirror in fear, leaving him looking mostly normal, although he was white as a sheet.
The teen staggered out of the bathroom and slumped down on his bed.
"Whats happened to me?" he muttered.
As if to answer his question, his arm hit the TV remote, causing the channel to change to one showing a TV series from the States. The character on screen was explaining something to his partner.
"Most vampire lore is crap. A cross won't repel them. Sunlight won't kill them and neither will a stake to the heart. But the bloodlust - that part's true. They need fresh human blood to survive. They were once people, so you won't know it's a vampire until it's too late."
Bloodlust… Just the thought of the red liquid made Kanekis heart begin to beat faster, his mouth water and his throat burn. To make matters worse, his new fangs had slid from their sheaths. He wanted nothing more than to find a human, tear out their throat and drink that sweet elixir that flowed through them…
Kaneki shook his head, dispelling the horrifying thoughts as he came to an equally horrifying realization. The sunlight hurt him, his throat constantly burned and the mere thought of blood was enough to make him almost lose control.
"No," whispered Kaneki, "It can't be true. Vampires aren't real!"
But despite his denial, the idea made of horrible amount of sense. It would certainly explain what he was feeling and all of the changes he was experiencing. Then, Kaneki remembered the strange man from outside the Hospital. He seemed to know and Kaneki was willing to bet that he was also...whatever it was Kaneki had become. He also remembered the invitation and quickly looked at the clock. It was nine o'clock, definitely night. If he wanted answers, it seemed that that invitation would be the best option. Decision made, Kaneki grabbed his jacket and left his apartment.
The teen made his way through the streets, trying with all his might to ignore the fact that his senses seemed to be amplified to the nth degree and he felt far more energized than he ever had done before. Until he was given indisputable proof, he was going to deny what he was slowly starting to subconsciously accept. It didn't take long to reach the 20th Ward, but by the time he did, the burn in his throat was beginning to become more pronounced. God, he was thirsty. He needed something to drink, something warm and sweet. Kaneki slumped against a wall as the ground in front of him seemed to spin, panting heavily as sweat began to pour from his face. Despite the fact that he had felt fine just a few moments ago, now he just felt ill. As he tried to catch his breath, the sound of voices reached his ears. The teen looked up and saw an old man grabbing a young girl who looked about Kaneki's age. Kaneki could smell the alcohol on the old man from where he was and it turned his stomach. The girl on the other hand...He could smell her and the scent made his mouth water. It was a sweet, heavy smell, like dark chocolate. He felt his fangs unsheathed as he began to make his way towards the struggling girl, ignoring the man. As he approached, the drunk noticed him.
"Huh, what do you want?" he slurred, "What are you looking at?"
Kaneki ignored him, his face still shadowed by his hood.
"Hey, don't ignore me!" shouted the drunk, reaching for the teen.
"Don't you dare touch me scum!" hissed Kaneki, lifting his head and revealing a pair of pure black eyes and his razor sharp fangs.
"Ah!" yelped the drunk, staggering away from the Fledgling, "W-what the hell are you? You monster!"
Kaneki snarled and shot forwards, his fangs into the mans throat. He may reek of booze, but at this point the Vampire in Kaneki just didn't care. Just the walk over to the man and his victim was enough to send the Vampire over the edge as its blood thirst reached its peak. It needed blood, NOW! Kanekis fangs sank straight into the mans neck like it wasn't even their, making him squeal in agony, before he went limp as the Vampire drained him in seconds, reducing him to a dried up husk.
Touka Kirishima watched in shock and no small amount of horror as her would be meal was attacked and drained by a boy that didn't look that much older than her. It took a lot to shake a Ghoul, but witnessing the terrifying black eyes and parana like fangs in a seemingly human face was certainly enough to do so. Those eyes were so different than a Ghouls Kakugan, they were like a sharks, completely soulless with absolutely no emotion but a ferocious, endless hunger. As she watched, the drunk began to shrivel, until all that remained was a dried up husk of skin. The creature tore its fangs from the throat of the corpse and released it, letting it fall. As soon as it hit the floor, the body burst into a cloud of dust, before the creature turned its black eyes on her.
As it did, Touka realized that she knew it. It was the boy who had dated Rize. She thought he would be dead by now, but if what he had done to the drunk was any indication then Rize was the dead one. The creature took a step towards her, making her flinch back, before a black shadow suddenly shot out of the sky and collided with the boy, forcing him to the ground. The boy let out a roar of fury as he slashed at the shadow, only for his hand to be grabbed and forced behind his back.
"You will be calm!" shouted the shadow as a its hood fell back, revealing a human face with similar fangs and glowing blue eyes surrounded by black.
The frenzied teen continued to struggle as his captor reached under his coat and pulled out a syringe filled with a black liquid, before he stabbed it into his neck and pressed the plunger. The struggling teen let out a yelp as black veins appeared on his skin, before he went limp. The man sighed as he pulled out the syringe and released the unconscious teen.
"I hate having to do that," he muttered as his monstrous visage faded.
He turned to Touka, making her flinch back and bring out her Kagune, ready for a fight.
"Who are you?" she demanded, "No, scratch that, what are you?"
The man chuckled as he lifted the unconscious teen over his shoulder.
"Ghouls aren't the only things that haunt the night little lady," he said, "In fact, compared with some of the beasties out here, your kind are pretty small fry. I don't really think I need to spell out to you what we are, do I?"
He raised an amused eyebrow at her, before grabbing the hem of his coat and swirling it up, making the shadows seem to bend around him as his form dissolved into a flock of bats that flew up into the sky and out of sight, leaving a thoroughly shaken Ghoul.
"...is responsible for this?"
"Thats what I want to know. Someone turned this kid and then left him alone. I'm surprised its taken this long for his Thirst to get the better of him."
"I want the Sire found!"
"They will be, now quit your whining LaCroix. Don't forget, your not the Prince around here, I am."
"No see here..!"
"Quiet, he's awake."
Kaneki groaned as consciousness slowly returned and with it a pounding in his head and a feeling like he had the flu. Slowly, the teen opened his eyes, blinking away the bleariness, and found himself laying on a moth-eaten settee in a dirty room lit by a flickering bulb. He was not alone in the room however as he quickly became aware of as someone placed a hand on his forehead. He looked up and found himself staring at a cleavage, before he quickly directed his gaze up onto the amused face of the woman standing over him. She didn't look that much older than Kaneki, with brown hair in a hime cut and brown eyes and was wearing a low cut top and a pair of jeans.
"How are you feeling?" asked the girl.
"Sick," replied Kaneki.
"I'm not surprised considering the amount of Dead Mans Blood Pete gave you."
She directed a glare at one of the other occupants of the room where he was sat on an office chair. It was the same man Kaneki had met outside of the hospital, only now without his coat and sunglasses, revealing his blue eyes, button down shirt and jeans.
"Hey, don't blame me Kimi, you're the one who gave me the dosage!" protested Pete.
"Yes, as a last resort!" retorted Kimi, "Surely you could have found a better way to calm him down."
"A newborn in a Blood Frenzy with a Ghoul in the area?" asked Pete, "You really think I could have stopped him without having to resort to drastic measures?"
"Enough of this!" snapped the third occupant of the room, a young man with light red hair, dressed in an expensive looking suit, "We need to find who turned this boy so we can deal with them!"
"And just how do you propose we do that LaCroix?" asked Pete, "The kids unlikely to remember, the scene of the incident has been thoroughly cleaned so we can't get the scent from their. I also find myself reminding you again that you have no authority here and even less over me. Or did you forget who you are talking to?"
LaCroix quailed before the other man's glare for a moment, before he seemed to regain his bluster.
"Need I remind you that I am a representative of the Conclave?" snapped LaCroix, puffing himself up like a peacock, "And according to the Conclaves laws, all Turnings must go through them and any unauthorized Turnings are punishable by death, for both the Sire and the Childe…"
SMACK!
Pete moved with such incredible speed Kaneki couldn't even see the motion as he punched the puffed up man across the room. The black haired man stormed over to LaCroix, his face contorted into a scowl that showed off his unsheathed fangs, before slamming his foot into the prone mans head, forcing it into the concrete.
"You can take your precious Conclave and shove it up your ass!" snarled Pete, "They are an outdated idea composed of weak and foolish old men, so obsessed with clinging to their power they refuse to accept that their methods are outdated and wrong. This city is under my control and the only one I bow to is the Princess!"
He slammed his foot into LaCroix's side, sending him crashing through the wall and onto the stage on the other side.
"Get out of my territory and tell those twisted old men that if I catch another of their flunkies in Tokyo, I will crush them!"
"You'll regret this Romanov!" snarled LaCroix as he staggered to his feet and ran from the building.
Pete took a deep breath before turning to face a shocked and scared Kaneki.
"Sorry about that kid," said the man, "Just had to take out the trash. My name is Peter Romanov, Prince of the Tokyo Vampires."
And thats the end. I hope you liked this latest entry to the Vault as its something I'd like to do more of at some point, once I've read Tokyo Ghoul again. Before I sign off, a few points.
First, the design for the vamps in this isnt really taken from anywhere, although the idea for the fangs came from Supernatural, as did the quote. The quote was taken from the episode Dead mans blood. I also took the idea of dead mans blood being poison for vamps from Supernatural cus it was a cool idea.
Second, there will be more beasties showing up in this story, including werewolves and a few others. I like the idea of a Wendigo coming to town and muscling in on the Ghouls.
Third, in this world, Ghouls are like catnip for Vampires, their blood is extremely tasty for them. Of course that works both ways and vamps make good eating for Ghouls. Both have a rejuvenating effect on the other, granting increased regeneration and strength for a short time.
Oh, and De necrezut is Romanian for unbelievable, from Google translate.
And this is where I sign out. Please leave me a review!
