Ok, so in this story Megan and Tommy's relationship had been on and off for 6 years whilst Megan was a resident at New York General and Tommy was a rookie in the police force but, once Megan's residency was over and one of Tommy's stupid mistakes slowly ended anything they had left.
So Megan moved back to Philadelphia feeling alone and vulnerable with a secret that she could no longer keep and her only option was to go to the one person she did not want to turn to.
A huge thank you to my lovely Beta Reader Jenny-Gibbs-Forever who has been helping me with this story and I would be lost without her.
Chapter 34 – We do not want to leave it all behind
It was now the day of the big move for Todd and the girls but Lacey was not willing to start packing and Maddie packed a few things away but didn't really want to do anymore so she just stopped and walked into laceys room knowing that she wasn't packing anything away so Maddie walked in and sighed "I hate this lace" Maddie said sitting on laceys bed.
"I know, what can we do I mean whenever we mention it to dad he says we are going no matter what it's like we have no say in the matter" lacey sighed weakly.
"But what if we did have a say?" Maddie said smiling lacey frowned and looked at her sister.
"what If we tell dad together and tell him how we feel about it and tell him that he is just not hearing us and just doing what he wants something like that" lacey shrugged "we can give it a try" Maddie smiled at lacey.
"When are you thinking we should do it maddz?" lacey looked up to her big sister for guidance "I don't really know lace, how about a bit later on" lacey nodded weakly.
Mean while Megan was in the morgue deep in to her own thoughts when she heard someone clear their throat making Megan jump and turn round to see Joan standing there leaning against the door frame.
"Sorry I didn't mean to make you jump darling" Joan walked further into the morgue with a small smile on her lips.
"I see your running for office again" Joan sighed hearing the bluntness in her daughters tone " yes I am and well I wanted to come to see if you would come to dinner tonight just you and me" Joan said moving closer to Megan.
Megan turned to face her mother "It won't be just me and you will it? Who else are you hoping would stop by?" Joan looked down at her hands "well my publicist Sheila but, it would be good to have you there as you are a big part of this campaign" Megan frowned and Joan handed Megan a leaflet with a picture of her around the tender age of 12 holding her mother's hand looking up at her with hope on her face. Megan could not believe her mother sometimes "I don't want to be part of this campaign I have my own problems at the moment" Megan said bitterly to Joan.
"What's happened darling?" Megan rolled her eyes "If you weren't so into you campaign you would know that Todd is moving and taking the girls with him all the way to sunny California" Megan said sarcastically.
"Oh Megan darling" Joan placed her arm round Megan but Megan moved away "You better get going to your dinner don't want you to keep Sheila waiting" Megan turned away from Joan and looked out the window of the morgue and Joan took one last look at her daughter then left. Once Megan knew, Joan had gone she walked over to the leaflet her mother hand left behind picked it up and looked at the picture.
Megan could remember that day so clearly
Flash back
Megan walked the long route home by herself as she had done so many times before but on this particular day she remembered walking a long when several police cars went rushing past her and turned into her street Megan was intrigued what was going on so she walked a bit faster finally taking the corner father quickly she saw the police cars by her house and a crowd of people standing outside the police barrier tape looking at each other with horrid looks on their faces.
Megan looked at all her neighbours as she walked by seeing their sad faces she reached her house only to see that police were in her house, the coroners white van was parked in her drive, and that is when she knew something horrible had happened and a feeling deep in her gut was telling her something unimaginable had happened to her mother or even her father.
Megan ducked under the police tape and walked up to the front of her house only to be stopped by a police officer blocking the doorway.
"What's going on? Why are you in my house?" Megan asked
"I don't know how to tell you this kid but, we don't know where your mother is but your father is dead" Megan stood in shock letting her school bag and books crashing to the ground, as she stood motionless and paralyzed with fear. Megan looked up past the police officer and up the steps towards her father's study seeing the forensics in their white uniforms as they finger printed everything.
Megan turned and walked outside and sat down on the front steps and stayed there waiting and waiting but still no sign of her mother. Then when Megan was sure it could get any worse, the coroner came down the steps carrying her father in a black body bag. Megan could not take her eyes off the black bag that now carried her father's dead body. Megan felt a cold hand on her shoulder "Hang in there kid your mother will her home soon" Megan nodded but watched as they took her father away never to be seen again.
Megan just could not take anymore she took off and just rushed towards her father shed taking her own key he had given her not so long ago and climbed in closing the door behind her. Megan sobbed as she looked round at her father's things around and it still smelt like him. Megan grabbed a blanket wrapped it round her tight and curled up in to a ball and cried herself to sleep feeling alone wanting her father to come back.
Joan arrived home an hour later only to find Megan gone and no sign of her so she alerted the police who were now on the hunt for Megan but 4 hours later, they found her sound asleep in her father's shed. Joan rushed into the shed shook Megan until she opened her eyes and then wrapped her arms round her tight. Megan vowed never to feel that abandoned again.
End of Flash back
Mean while Maddie and Lacey decided to tell Todd how they felt knowing that it was now or never because they were leaving in the morning. The girls headed down stairs to see Todd sitting down
With a beer in his hand and several boxes in the lounge fully packed leaving, the lounge stripped down to the bare essentials.
"Dad" Todd looked over to see Lacey and Maddie walking into the lounge and joining him on the sofa.
"Everything alright girls, how's the packing going?" Todd asked taking a sip of beer.
"Well about that, me and Lacey feel like we haven't had much of a choice about this move dad," Maddie said looking at lacey who wouldn't look at Maddie or her father.
"I have asked you both and yes I know lacey doesn't want to go but, you were on my side about this," Todd said softly to Maddie.
"I know I'm sorry dad but I didn't want to hurt you feelings, but you never considered my feelings not really and... I don't want to move and I feel like you are not giving me a choice or listening to me or Lacey" Todd did not speak for a moment.
"Dad... Please can we stay we do not want to leave our lives behind. Maddie is cheer captain of the squad, I have my horse riding and of course our friends and we are not ready to leave it all behind please say that means something to you because it means a hell of a lot to us" Lacey said finally looking her father in the eyes seeing her own blues eyes staring back her.
"I know they mean everything to you but you can find all of that in California lace" Lacey shook her head.
"Thanks a lot dad" Maddie said sarcastically before she stormed out of the house slamming the front door shut Lacey rushed after her sister. Todd stormed to the front door yelling for the girls to come back but they ignored him and carried on.
"Where are we going Maddie?" Maddie looked at her little sister when it hit her "come on" Maddie linked arms with lacey and got to the bus stop and waited.
10 minutes later the bus came and Maddie paid for herself and Lacey they both headed the back of the bus and sat down. Maddie leant against the window and watched the world fly by whilst lacey looked around not sure what to say so she decided to say nothing. The girls got off the bus, walked to their grandmother's house, knocked on the door, and waited. Lucky for them Joan was home from her meal and was rather shocked to see her granddaughters on her doors step.
"Grandma" lacey said bursting into tears wrapping her arms round her tight.
"Oh Lacey Darling, what's wrong, come in girls" Joan said hugging the young girl back only to let go so she could let them both inside.
"I'm sorry we had nowhere else to go" Maddie whimpered before she too burst into tears.
"It's alright, come you can tell me all about it" they walked into the lounge and sat down on the sofa Joan sat opposite the girls.
"What's happened?" Joan said tenderly
"Dads taking us to California making us leave you, mom and our lives behind and we told him we wanted to stay and well he wasn't pleased" Joan motioned for lacey to carry on.
"We feel like he isn't listening to us or cares about our lives and we've just had enough" Maddie placed her arm round Lacey to comfort her.
"Do you parents know you are here girls" they both shook their heads
In the mean time, Todd turned up at Megan's apartment thinking that the girls would be there so he knocked on the door.
"Todd?" Megan said confused
"Are the girls here?"
"No, why?" Todd sighed
"I have lost the girls and thought they would have come here"
"You have lost our daughters and you don't know where they are? Oh my god unbelievable!" Todd narrowed his eyes
"Don't have a go at me Megan. Just tell me have you seen the girls or not?"
"No, I have already told you I haven't, I can't believe your taking my children away from me again" Megan push at Todd's chest in frustration he took a few steps back into her apartment "you selfish asshole"
"Megan just stop this isn't doing any good or isn't going to find the girls" Megan hung her mouth open in shock
"I can't believe you your blaming me for this argument? You're the one who lost our children!" Megan took a deep breath "You know they don't want to go don't you?" Megan said glancing at Todd then looked away.
"They don't want to leave you Megan but, I am trying to do what's best for them both that's all"
"You think taking them away from me is what's best for them?"
"Yes I do, you have let them down so many times Megs and I just can't take the crushed and hurt looks on their faces when you let them down again"
"I know I let them down in the past but, I am doing my best and I think they are finally forgiving me and I won't let anything to get in the way of that. I love the girls Todd"
"I know Megan I know and the girls they know too"
Megan's mobile buzzed with her mother's Id Megan hesitated before answering.
"Megan, darling don't panic the girls are fine" Megan sighed
"So they are with you"
"Yes, they don't want to go Megan so you and Todd better sort this out now" Joan demanded.
"Fine we will be over in a few minutes and thank... you ... mom"
"Everything will be alright Megan, that's what I'm here for to help you and my grandchildren" Megan ended the call "they are with my mother" Todd sighed with relief
"I don't know what I would have done if I lost them Megs"
"I know" there was silence and for a minute Megan wanted Todd to wrap his arms tight around her like he used to-do when she was upset but Todd putting a hand on her arm shook her from her thoughts "Don't worry they are safe, come on"
Megan and Todd took their separate cars to Joan's house they soon arrived and walked into lounge to see the girls sitting down with Maddie hugging her little sister.
"Why the hell did you run off like that when I was calling for you to come back?" Todd demanded
"I'm sorry but, you weren't listening to me or Lacey and we had enough and this was all we could do to make you realise we don't want to go" Maddie said bluntly.
"I'm sorry baby, I should have listened you to when you said you didn't want to go" Todd said softly "it's just what's-"
"Best for us? Yeah we know you have told us over and over again but We couldn't believe that everything was up to us, I mean you "Lacey said to her father "You were ready move to California unless we stopped you and you "lacey pointed to her mother "You would have left the very first guy you had been with since the divorce if we didn't go. We are the children and you are the adults so act like instead of leaving your fait to me and Maddie"
"Wow were did that all come from Lace" Maddie asked shocked lacey shrugged
"What do you want Girls? What would make you both happy" Megan asked Maddie and lacey looked at each other "What do you think?" Maddie said smiling at her mother and Megan smiled properly for the first time in a long time.
Joan stood and watched seeing them all in the one room smiling reminded her of when Megan and Todd first met… what went wrong Joan would never fully know except that they blamed each other as much as they blamed themselves.
