Pokémon Go!
Chapter 34: Underground Battle! Showdown in the Driftveil Gym
Narration: At last Golen and his friends have arrived at Driftveil City, where Golen hopes to win his 5th Badge.
"We're finally here." Golen expressed in excitement as he looked over at the city. "This place sure is beautiful." Carly stated in awe.
The city was filled with emerald and gold colored buildings of various sizes and along with that had a traditional Pokémon Center and in the center of the town was the Driftveil Market. On the side of the entrance to the city was a Charizard shaped statue. "Wow this statue is amazing." Vlad expressed in awe. "Indeed, this is a statue of one of the fully evolved forms of one of the Starter Pokémon from Kanto." Tom informed his companions.
"A Charizard, huh?" Golen stated as he read the description of the statue. "Man would I love to catch one of those." Golen expressed as he stared at the statue.
"You should probably focus on the Pokémon you already have before fantasizing about catching more of them." Carly told her companion as Emolga nodded its head in agreement.
"So should we head to the Gym first or should we drop by at the Pokémon Center?" Vlad asked. "We should go to the Pokémon Center first, I have to congratulate my Pokémon for their valiant effort in stopping the Heatmor and Durant." Tom answered. "All they did was pose together." Cary muttered. "Fine, let's go!" Golen declared as the group departed to the Pokémon Center.
"I can't believe it, what does he want with us?" Nichole nervously asked her teammates. "I'm not sure, but what I do know is that we're in trouble if he finds out about our involvement in the Comet Tower incident." Duke stoically answered. "Damn him, after we successfully added a few Pokémon to our roster this bastard decides to contact us." Zorua angrily stated. "We should be cautious, he's someone that we can't afford to drop our guard around." Duke told his companions. "Yeah, let's move out." Zorua declared as the trio departed.
"Everyone, I must congratulate you all on your valiant effort in defeating those Heatmor and Durant." Tom stated as he congratulated his Pokémon while he and his companions relaxed in the backyard of the Pokémon Center. "I'm glad you guys were there for us." Vlad thanked the Pokémon. Aipom, Teddiursa and Skitty happily nodded their heads as Houndour aloofly sat alone while Swinub attempted to tackle its trainer. "Those guys sure are proud of themselves." Carly thought to herself as she looked on at the group.
"Alright, with these three this win should be easy." Golen thought to himself as he looked at the three distinctly colored Pokéballs. "Emoh, emoh." Emolga told its trainer.
"Don't worry, these guys can handle it." Golen assured the Sky Squirrel Pokémon. "Besides, if anything they'd at least do better than you would." Golen jokingly told his Pokémon. "Emolga, emoh!" Emolga retorted as the duo began to bicker. "Everything is still like it's always been." Carly happily thought to herself. "Alright, come on everyone! I'm going to win my 5th Badge!" Golen declared.
"Be cautious Mr. Golen, the last four Gym Battles will be much more of a challenge than the first four were." Vlad told his companion.
"Underestimating them will surely be your downfall." Tom added along. "Don't worry you two, I know what I'm doing. But what kind of person is the Driftveil Gym Leader?" Golen asked his companions.
"I am not entirely certain, I remember that he at least had some sort of connection to the previously Gym Leader, Clay. But other than that my information on him is scarce." Tom answered. "But what are you going to do against Ground-types? I mean I know that there's a bunch of counters to them but considering how much variety they could possibly have, would it really be a good idea to charge in with a type advantage and nothing else?" Carly asked the goggles wearing lad. "Hmm I've got no idea." Golen bluntly answered.
"But why are you rushing into…" "I have faith in the guys that I decided to use for this battle, nothing more and nothing less." Golen declared as he interrupted Carly's sentence. "I understand." Tom smirked.
"But what if you end up losing?" Carly asked her companion, still being affected from her own defeat. "I never said I had faith that I'd win, I just said that I have faith in my Pokémon." Golen answered to Carly's surprise. "Mr. Golen….With that kind of passion you'll win without a doubt!" Vlad happily exclaimed. "Alright, let's go!" Golen declared as he and the crimson-haired lad departed.
"Carly are you alright?" Tom asked his companion as Vlad looked back. "Yeah, I'm fine." Carly answered as she prepared to depart as well. "We should make haste, the faster Golen conquers the Driftveil Gym the faster we can assist you in your preparations for the next trial of the Unova Circuit." Tom informed his companion. "Yeah." Carly smiled as Vlad happily looked on before turning back to continue his march with Golen.
After a while the quartet had finally arrived at the outskirts of the Driftveil Gym. They had arrived in front of a bronze colored building. It had light blue lights and three pillars on the ceiling and along with that there were two Pokéball shaped statues that were put on the sides of the entrance as well.
"It's finally time." Golen muttered to himself as he and his friends walked into the building.
They had entered into a seemingly plain lobby that had nothing but a counter, a table with a few chairs, two golden statues and various pictures on the wall. "Is this really the Gym?" Carly asked in confusion. "Hmm I know. The past Gym Leaders we've met have usually had a hobby aside from being a Gym Leader, right?" Vlad asked. "Yeah that's true." Carly answered. "So if we find out what this Gym Leader does than maybe we can find a way to enter the real Gym." Vlad declared. "Good idea Vlad. But what could his hobby be?" Golen wondered.
"I recall that Clay was quite fond of mining so if anything that trait was carried over to his successor." Tom answered as he walked up to what seemed to be a statue. "This is what you use to activate the elevator." Tom told his companions. "Good job, sensei!" Vlad exclaimed. "It's not even fair, he already knew the answer." Golen muttered to himself.
The group had eventually gotten together as Tom pressed the button on the statue like object, which caused the platform that they were standing on to descend into the ground.
"What floor are we going to stop at?" Golen asked as they passed through a dark cave which seemed to be filled with various landing platforms and conveyer belts. "I assume that this elevator is programmed to take the challenger directly to the Gym Leader." Tom answered as the elevator had suddenly reached the bottom floor.
"Hey, Driftveil City Gym Leader! I challenge you!" Golen loudly declared. "Why are you screaming?" Carly asked. "It makes me feel empowered." Golen proudly answered.
"You only know that word because I taught it to you." Tom informed his companion. "What's your point?" Golen asked. "Hey you guys, I see a stairway." Vlad told his companions. "Alright, come on everyone!" Golen declared as he eagerly walked down the stairway while his companions followed him.
As the group walked down the stairway they looked over to see various stalagmites of crystal jutting out from the ground. As they approached the end of the stairway they began to hear the sound of rocks being chipped off from the wall. "Who's there!?" Golen exclaimed as the quartet arrived at a large golden platform.
The platform was surrounded with various drilling machines, wheelbarrows and shovels as a man chipped off a piece of stone from the wall using a pickaxe.
"Who are you?" Golen asked the man who dropped his pickaxe and rose from the floor. He was a medium sized man with an average build. He had brown hair along with brown eyes. He wore an orange and black cowboy hat and had a red vest with tassels and underneath his vest he wore a white dress shirt with an orange tie. He also wore red cowboy pants which were kept up by a black belt with a golden buckle along with black cowboy boots. "Hey how much you guys wanna bet that this guy speaks with an accent?" Carly jokingly asked her companions.
"I'm the Gym Leader of the Driftveil City Gym, Turner." the man declared. "You were saying?" Tom asked his annoyed companion as Vlad chuckled.
"Hah so you're the Gym Leader? Well alright then, I challenge you to a Gym Battle!" Golen declared. "Fine, I'll accept your challenge." the Gym Leader stated. "R…really?" Golen asked in disbelief. "What do you mean?" Turner asked. "Oh it's nothing, it's just that it's never been this easy to get a Gym Battle before." Golen answered. "That is true." Vlad admitted. "Indeed, we usually must always overcome some sort of inconvenience." Tom smirked. "Why are you guys complaining about it being too easy?" Carly asked her companions. "I…it's just not the same." Golen sulked.
"So do you want the battle or not?" Turner asked the goggles wearing lad. "Yeah, so what kind of battle should we have?" Golen asked the brunette man. "How about a 3-on-3 battle?" Turner suggested.
"At least that's still the same." Golen muttered. "What was that?" Turner asked. "Oh it's nothing, I accept." Golen declared. "Hey where's the referee?" Golen asked the Gym Leader as the two trainers stood on the two opposite sides of the battlefield. "I gave him the day off." Turner answered. "Now's my chance, can I be the referee?" Vlad asked. "Hey Vlad, let me get a turn to be referee." Carly told the crimson-haired lad. "B…but I'm always referee." Vlad sadly stated. "Yeah but I've never gotten to be the referee before." Carly answered. "But this is my thing." Vlad muttered in response as he went to stand at the sidelines with Tom and Emolga.
"It's just a onetime thing." Carly assured her companion. "Either of you can be the referee." Turner declared.
"Alright, this will be a 3-on-3 Gym Battle between the Driftveil City Gym Leader, Turner and Golen. The first side to take out all of the Pokémon from their opponent's team will be the winner. Let the battle, begin!" Carly declared as Vlad sulked. "Alright! Time to get to work, Piloswine!" Turner declared as he tossed his Pokéball into the sky.
From it emerged a big, brown, furry Pokémon with an impressive hump on its back. It also had two tusks made of ice, which seemed small but could be lethal. These tusks were quite small. It had floppy ears and small hooved legs which were covered by its long hair. "A Piloswine?" Carly muttered to herself. "That's the evolved form of Swinub." Vlad expressed. "Indeed, it excites me to get to see the evolved form of one of my own teammates in battle." Tom stated in amusement as Golen pulled out his Pokédex.
Piloswine, the Swine Pokémon. The evolved form of Swinub. With its excellent sense of smell, it's even able to find mushrooms that are buried under frozen ground.
"Swinub was a Ground and Ice-type so I'm sure it's the same with its evolution. If that is the case then, let's go, Servine!" Golen declared as he called out the Grass Snake Pokémon. "A Grass-type against a Ground and Ice-type, huh?" Vlad muttered. "Going by typing alone it should be an even matchup." Tom stated. "You get the first move, challenger." Turner told the trainer. "Alright, Servine use Seed Bomb!" Golen commanded as Servine opened its mouth.
Its mouth then began to glow white as it then fired multiple glowing light green seeds from its mouth at the Swine Pokémon. "Dodge it!" Turner commanded as Piloswine avoided the attack.
"It's pretty fast." Carly muttered as she intently looked on. "Now use Stealth Rock!" Turner declared. "Oh no." Vlad muttered in shock. "Golen, do not allow him to carry out that attack!" Tom shouted to his companion. "Uh…oh yeah, Servine use Iron Tail!" Golen commanded as Servine's tail adapted a white glow before turning into iron as it charged at its opponent. Piloswine's body became surrounded in several silver glitters that grew larger and fired around the battlefield. The energy then grew larger and formed into pointed glowing gray rocks that fell onto the ground.
"It's too late." Vlad muttered as Emolga looked on while Servine halted its attack. "What did he do?" Golen wondered out loud. "What's wrong? Aren't you going to attack?" Turner asked with a smirk.
"Servine keep on with your Iron Tail!" Golen commanded as the Grass Snake Pokémon once again charged at its opponent. "Piloswine dodge it with Dig!" Turner quickly ordered as the Swine Pokémon dug underground using its front paws.
"Stay on guard, Servine!" Golen shouted as the Grass Snake Pokémon looked around all over the battlefield.
"Go!" Turner commanded as Piloswine emerged from the ground behind Servine. "Servine dodge it!" Golen commanded as Servine avoided the attack.
"Now use Ice Shard!" Turner instantly commanded as Piloswine quickly released multiple glowing light blue icicles from its mouth at the Grass Snake Pokémon. "Avoid it!" Golen commanded as Servine swiftly ran across the battlefield as it avoided the icicles. "Not bad." Turner mumbled to himself. "Now use Seed Bomb!" Golen commanded as the Grass Snake Pokémon once again attacked its opponent. "Dodge it and use Ice Shard!" Turner ordered as the Swine Pokémon quickly retaliated and attacked its opponent. "Servine intercept it with Seed Bomb!" Golen commanded as Servine intercepted and overpowered Piloswine's attack, with the collision causing an explosion.
"Use Growth!" Golen commanded as light green orbs began to appear around Servine as it absorbed the orbs and began to glow. "Use Dig!" Turner commanded as Piloswine once again hid underground.
"Use Growth!" Golen commanded as Servine once again rose its attack. "Ice Shard!" Turner commanded as Piloswine suddenly appeared from underground and struck the Grass Snake Pokémon. "Servine!" Golen shouted as Servine firmly stood in place despite being hit by a super effective attack. "Not bad, Piloswine use Double-Edge!" Turner commanded as Piloswine became covered in a gold aura. It then charged at the Grass Snake Pokémon with great force. "Servine use Iron Tail!" Golen commanded as Servine charged at the Swine Pokémon.
"Go!" Golen shouted as Servine sidestepped Piloswine and smacked it in the face with Iron Tail. The result of the attack had sent the Swine Pokémon spiraling into the wall.
"A…amazing." Vlad said in awe at the sight of the fallen Piloswine. "P…Piloswine is unable to battle, Servine is the battle!" Carly declared. "Impressive." Turner smiled as he recalled his fallen Piloswine. "S…Servine's that strong?" Golen muttered to himself in absolute shock. "It really has powered up a lot ever since it evolved." Golen thought to himself as the Grass Snake Pokémon simply smirked at its trainer.
"Hahahaha, you've got some strong spirit there." Turner laughed. "But I can't let you get carried away. Get to work, Krokorok!" Turner commanded as he called out the Desert Croc Pokémon.
"Krokorok, huh?" Golen thought to himself as Servine eagerly prepared to battle. "Servine return for now." Golen declared to the disappointment of the Grass Snake Pokémon. "Why would he recall his Servine?" Carly thought to herself. "Let's go, Mudkip!" Golen declared as he called out the Mud Fish Pokémon. "Oh no!" Tom exclaimed as he and Vlad looked on in dismay at Golen's decision. "Mud?" Mudkip muttered as multiple glowing gray rocks emerged from the ground and struck the Mud Fish Pokémon.
"What?" Golen expressed in shock. "What's going on?" Carly asked in confusion.
"Stealth Rock is an entry hazard move that instantly activates whenever the opponent calls out a Pokémon after the attack was successfully used, in other words it has an effect that negatively affects the Pokémon called out by the opponent if they happen to fall into the category of Pokémon that are vulnerable to that certain move. Unfortunately for Mr. Golen there is no Pokémon that is immune to Stealth Rock." Vlad stated. "As long as he can avoid using a Pokémon that is weak to Rock-type moves than he should not be at too much of a disadvantage." Tom added along.
"That doesn't mean a thing, Mudkip use Ice Beam!" Golen commanded as Mudkip formed a light blue ball in front of its mouth as it shot multiple beams of the same color at the Desert Croc Pokémon.
"Krokorok counter it with Fire Fang!" Turner commanded as Krokorok opened its mouth. Then, red-orange fire appeared and covered its mouth as it bit down on the beam, which caused the attack to dissipate.
"Now use Low Sweep!" Turner quickly ordered as the Desert Croc Pokémon swept its leg at Mudkip. "Mudkip dodge it and use Dig!" Golen commanded as the Mud Fish Pokémon dug a hole with its front paws. "Krokorok follow it with Dig!" Turner commanded with a smirk as his Krokorok jumped into the air, then dived into the ground face first while spinning its body slightly. "So it's a stalemate." Golen muttered to himself. "Are you sure about that?" Turner confidently asked to the goggles wearing lad's shock. "Krokorok use Bulldoze!" Turner commanded as the Desert Croc Pokémon created a shock wave underground, which sent the Mud Fish Pokémon flying out from underground. "Mudkip!" Golen exclaimed.
"Now use Low Sweep!" Turner commanded as Krokorok quickly emerged from underground and leaped into the sky, it then smacked the Mud Fish Pokémon into the ground. "He's strong." Golen thought to himself.
"Come on, don't tell me that's all you've got. Krokorok finish it with Low Sweep!" Turner commanded as the Desert Croc Pokémon charged at its opponent. "Mud." Mudkip muttered as it stood back up. "Mudkip use Ice Beam on the ground!" Golen commanded as the Mud Fish Pokémon used Ice Beam, which froze the ground that Krokorok ran on. "What?!" Turner expressed in shock as the Desert Croc Pokémon lost its balance and slid on the frozen floor. "Now use Aqua Tail!" Golen commanded as Mudkip's tail was encased in a powerful spiral of water. It then struck the Desert Croc Pokémon, who was sent flying as a result of the powerful attack.
"Amazing." Vlad exclaimed. "That won't be enough to stop us, Krokorok use Dig!" Turner commanded as it dug a hole underground. "Mudkip, stay on guard!" Golen told the Mud Fish Pokémon. "Mud." Mudkip muttered as it looked around to see where its opponent was hidden. "Where could it be?" Golen thought to himself as Mudkip used the blue fin on the top of its head to sense out its opponent. "Kroko!" Krokorok exclaimed as it emerged from the ground. "Dodge it!" Golen commanded as Mudkip avoided the attack.
"Krokorok use Fire Fang!" Turner commanded at the air borne Desert Croc Pokémon.
"Mudkip use Ice Beam!" Golen commanded as the Mud Fish Pokémon shot an Ice Beam at Krokorok's chest as it was sent flying into the ceiling. "Krokorok!" Turner exclaimed as the Desert Croc Pokémon's chest was stuck to the ceiling due to being frozen by the Ice Beam. "Now finish it with Whirlpool!" Golen commanded as Mudkip glowed a bluish-white color and it stood on its hind legs as it pointed its head and front legs to the air. It then opened its mouth and a huge whirlpool came out of it and formed above of Mudkip. Mudkip then threw the whirlpool at immobile Krokorok who was struck by the powerful attack.
"Krokorok is unable to battle, Mudkip is the winner!" Carly declared as the Desert Croc Pokémon fell to the floor.
"Alright!" Vlad happily shouted. "Golen still has his entire team while Turner is down to his last Pokémon." Tom stated. "So Mr. Golen's got this won, right?" Vlad asked.
"I assume that will be the case but first we have to see the power of Turner's final Pokémon." Tom answered. "Good job, Mudkip." Golen congratulated the joyful Mud Fish Pokémon. "You did well Krokorok. I must admit, I underestimated you but now that it's come to this your defeat has been sealed." Turner declared as he held out a Pokéball. "Bring it on." Golen nervously muttered to the Gym Leader.
"This guy's power is leagues above of my previous Pokémon. Come on out, Excadrill!" Turner declared as he called out a Pokémon that had a dark brown body with diagonal, red splotches.
Three markings were on its front, with two under each arm, and two on its back. It had short legs with small, narrow feet, each containing three toes. Its small white face was long and thin, tipped by its pink nose. Its eyes were set back, on both sides of the bridge of its nose. Under them, on each side, were two thin, red stripes. A large blade roughly twice as large as its face extended from its forehead. The top of the blade contained two smaller blades, resembling fins. Its arms were thick and had three large blades instead of fingers, with two smaller blades on top of the middle ones. On its knees, halfway down its arm, and just behind where its forehead meets its face, were small red spots.
"An Excadrill?" Vlad muttered as Emolga looked on. "I see, I had not expected for his ace to be the same as one utilized by Clay." Tom admitted as Golen pulled out his Pokédex.
Excadrill, the Subterrene Pokémon. Forming a drill with its steel claws and head, it can bore through a steel plate, no matter how thick it is.
"A Ground and Steel-type, huh?" Golen thought to himself. "Hey Mudkip, you think you can handle this?" Golen asked the Mud Fish Pokémon, who nodded in response. "Alright, use Whirlpool!" Golen commanded as Mudkip attacked the Subterrene Pokémon with a powerful Whirlpool. "Excadrill use Iron Head!" Turner confidently commanded as the large blade on Excadrill's head turned into a silver iron as it rammed itself against the Whirlpool. "What's he doing?" Carly expressed in shock as Excadrill's Iron Head managed to completely destroy the Whirlpool. "No way." Golen muttered to himself.
"I told you that he's on a whole other level." Turner declared. "Mudkip use Aqua Tail!" Golen commanded as the Mud Fish Pokémon prepared to attack.
"We won't fall back, Drill Run!" Turner ordered in response as Excadrill puts its arms up to its head and formed its body into a drill. It then jumped into the air and rotated its body while charging at the Mud Fish Pokémon. "Interc….Mudkip dodge it!" Golen urgently commanded to the shock of Mudkip, who narrowly avoided the attack. "If we got hit by that than we would've been done for." Golen thought to himself. "What's wrong? Where'd all of that confidence of yours go?" Turner asked the goggles wearing lad. "Mudkip use Ice Beam!" Golen commanded in response as the Mud Fish Pokémon attacked its opponent with a powerful Ice Beam.
"An attack of that level won't work on us, Iron Head!" Turner commanded as Excadrill plowed right through the Ice Beam and managed to strike Mudkip with the powerful Steel-type attack.
"Mudkip!" Mudkip wailed as it fell to the floor. "Mudkip! Are you alright?" Golen asked the Water-type as it struggled to stand on its feet. "You did well, return for now." Golen told the Mud Fish Pokémon as he recalled it. "That Excadrill is powerful, to think it could overwhelm Mudkip despite having the type disadvantage." Vlad expressed. "Golen was wise to switch out Mudkip before it could have possibly been defeated." Tom stated as Emolga looked on. "Let's go, Snorunt!" Golen declared as he called out the Snow Hat Pokémon.
Due to the effects of Piloswine's Stealth Rock, Snorunt was pelted with multiple grays boulders that appeared from the ground. "Snor…runt." Snorunt muttered.
"Because Snorunt is an Ice-type, which is weak to Rock-type moves, it ended up taking double the damage from that Stealth Rock." Turner informed the goggles wearing lad. "That doesn't matter, this is Snorunt's Gym debut and I know that it'll still find a way to win this battle." Golen confidently declared as Snorunt timidly hid behind its trainer's leg. "Did he even do anything about its shyness?" Carly thought to herself. "Snorunt, come on there's nothing to be scared about." Golen told the Snow Hat Pokémon.
"I know that we haven't battled together yet but we'll still find a way to beat that Excadrill, I promise." Golen added along. "Sno." Snorunt stated as it decided to battle for its trainer.
"Alright, Snorunt use Frost Breath!" Golen commanded as the Snow Hat Pokémon blew out snow from its mouth and a wind with sparkling blue powder was then released at the Subterrene Pokémon.
"Stop it with Rapid Spin!" Turner commanded in response as Excadrill held out both of its arms and both of its claws started to glow silver. It then spun its body rapidly while turning its head upwards. As it spun, its body released yellow static electricity as it managed to easily blow away Snorunt's Frost Breath. "No way!" Golen expressed in disbelief. "Excadrill use Iron Head!" Turner commanded as Excadrill charged at the Snow Hat Pokémon, who timidly looked on. "Snorunt dodge it!" Golen commanded as Snorunt ducked and managed to avoid the attack.
"We're not done yet, Excadrill use Earth Power!" Turner commanded as Excadrill's outline flashed yellow and it slammed its claw into the ground. Glowing gold cracks then traveled at the Snow Hat Pokémon. "Dodge it!" Golen commanded as Snorunt once again avoided the attack. "You're pretty good at running away." Turner expressed. "Snorunt use Ice Fang!" Golen commanded as Snorunt opened its mouth which began to glow light blue as it released two light blue beams of energy from its fangs at Excadrill. "Avoid it!" Turner commanded as the Subterrene Pokémon sidestepped its opponent.
"Darn it." Golen muttered. "Now use Drill Run!" Turner quickly ordered. "Snorunt counter it with Climate Attack!" Golen commanded as the Snow Hat Pokémon looked on in confusion.
"Mr. Golen, the attack is called Weather Ball!" Vlad shouted to the black-haired lad as Snorunt was hit by the Drill Run. "What?" Golen expressed in shock as Snorunt fell to the floor.
"Sno…runt." Snorunt muttered as it struggled to stand up. "Snorunt you did enough, return for now." Golen stated as he recalled the Snow Hat Pokémon.
"Mudkip and now Snorunt? You realize you're putting your Pokémon in danger by constantly switching them out right?" Turner asked the black-haired lad.
"No, they did everything they could so now I'll settle it with this guy." Golen declared as he held out a leaf green Pokéball. "Bring it on!" Turner excitingly declared. "Let's go, Servine!" Golen declared as he called the Grass Snake Pokémon. Due to the Stealth Rock, Servine was struck by multiple boulders as well. "Servine, let's win this battle." Golen told his Pokémon, who simply smirked in response.
"Excadrill use Earth Power!" Turner declared as the Subterrene Pokémon attacked its opponent. "Dodge it!" Golen commanded in response as Servine swiftly avoided the attack.
"Now use Seed Bomb!" Golen commanded as Servine attacked the Subterrene Pokémon. "Dodge it and use Drill Run!" Turner commanded as Excadrill avoided the Seed Bomb and charged at its opponent with Drill Run. "Use Seed Bomb one more time!" Golen commanded while Servine managed to strike its opponent with a powerful Seed Bomb. But to their dismay Excadrill continued with its attack and still managed to strike down the Grass Snake Pokémon. "Servine!" Golen exclaimed in concern as it quickly regained its balance.
"That Servine of yours is pretty tough." Turner admitted to the young lad. "Thanks, your Excadrill is amazing as well." Golen said in response.
"This guy is the symbol of my progress as a Gym Leader, you can't defeat it." Turner declared. "We'll win somehow, Servine use Growth!" Golen commanded as the Grass Snake Pokémon increased its attack stats. "Don't let them rest, use Iron Head!" Turner ordered as Excadrill once again charged at its opponent. "Jump and dodge it!" Golen quickly commanded as Servine jumped into the air and avoided the Iron Head. "Now that you're in the sky you can't dodge this one, Drill Run!" Turner shouted while Excadrill jumped into the air and held out its arms. It then spun its body rapidly as it rushed at the air borne Grass Snake Pokémon.
"Servine, send them flying with Iron Tail!" Golen commanded as Servine's tail was encased in a white light before turning into iron. "Servine!" Servine shouted as it slammed its tail against the side of Excadrill's body, which as a result caused the Subterrane Pokémon to lose its balance and plummet to the ground. "Amazing!" Vlad expressed in awe. "If he keeps this up, he might just win." Tom happily stated as Emolga looked on. "I can't afford to let anyone faint. If even a single of them ends up fainting than I'll lose this battle." Golen thought to himself as Servine landed on its feet.
"Alright, Servine use Seed Bomb!" Golen commanded as the Grass Snake Pokémon attacked its downed opponent. "We won't let you, Excadrill use Rapid Spin!" Turner commanded as the Subterrene Pokémon managed to deflect the Seed Bombs, much to Golen and Servine's dismay. "Now use Iron Head!" Turner commanded as Exacdrill charged at its opponent. "Servine use Iron Tail!" Golen commanded in response as Servine rushed at its opponent as well. The two Pokémon began to repeatedly clash with each other, neither side yielding while they continued to avoid and strike at each other.
Servine managed to slap Excadrill in the face but in response the Subterrene Pokémon rammed its head into the Grass Snake Pokémon's chest. The two Pokémon were both sent reeling as they quickly regained their balance and stood on the opposite sides of the arena. "Servine." "Excadrill." the two Pokémon smirked at each other, both being amused at how strong their opponent was.
"This has been a fun battle, but it's all over now. Excadrill settle this with Drill Run!" Turner commanded with a determined look on his face as the Subterrene Pokémon charged at its opponent at an incredible speed. "We won't lose, Servine use Seed Bomb on the floor below of Excadrill!" Golen commanded as the Grass Snake Pokémon opened its mouth. Its mouth then began to glow white as it then fired multiple glowing light green seeds from its mouth that exploded on the ground, which made its opponent lose its focus and balance and as a result ended up cancelling out the Drill Run as well. "Say what!?" Turner expressed in shock.
"Now it's time to settle this with our new move, Servine use Grass Pledge!" Golen commanded.
Servine then began to glow a light green color as various leaves appeared around it as it jumped into the air and slammed its tail into the ground. As a result a pillar of swirling leaves rushed at the dazed Subterrene Pokémon. When they reached Excadrill they then formed a ring of grass pillars and then in the center of them erupted a giant grass pillar as the Subterrene Pokémon was sent flying as a result of the new move. "Excadrill!" Turner exclaimed in shock as his trusted ace Pokémon fell to the floor, in defeat. "No way, I mean. Excadrill is unable to battle, the winner is Servine and the victor is the challenger, Golen!" Carly declared.
"Alright!" Vlad shouted. "To think he managed to win without losing a single member." Tom stated, being impressed with his companion's victory. "Thanks a lot Servine, I knew that you could do it." Golen happily told the Grass Snake Pokémon who only smirked in response, seemingly knowing that it would be victorious. "That kid's sure got some skill." Turner expressed as he let out a smile as he and his Excadrill looked on at the victorious young lad. "Amazing, h…he's even better than I thought." Carly thought to herself as she became depressed.
After a while the group had departed from the gym as Turner prepared to award Golen with his Gym Badge. "That was an excellent, gutsy battle." Turner stated as he congratulated the young trainer.
"Thanks a lot." Golen chuckled. "I inherited this Gym from my father and I've strived to surpass the standards that he and the other Gym Leaders of the past have set. In fact surpassing the past is the goal that we all must strive to obtain right now in the present. As long as you keep on moving forward than you'll become a legend yourself. Here, take this, it's the Quake Badge." Turner told the young trainer as he handed him a badge that was shaped like a vertical piece of earth, the top half of which has cracked and slid out of place, resembling the result of an earthquake.
"Thanks a lot, Mr. Turner. Alright, I won the Quake Badge!" Golen happily exclaimed as Mudkip cheered while Servine smirked and Snorunt hid behind its trainer.
Nightfall had eventually arrived as the group relaxed in their guest room at the Pokémon Center. "Man, I can't believe that I won my 5th Badge." Golen happily expressed as he stared at all the badges in his Badge Case. "Only three more and you will be qualified for the Unova League." Tom happily stated. "Yeah, we'll leave to the next town as soon as possible!" Golen exclaimed as someone knocked on the door. "Come in." Carly stated as Turner entered the room.
"Mr. Turner, what are you doing here?" Vlad asked. "I came here to ask you all if you were interested in entering the Pokémon World Tournament." he responded.
"Pokémon World Tournament?" Golen muttered in confusion. "Amazing! That tournament is going to be held here soon?" Tom asked in excitement. "Yeah, it will be held in four days." Turner answered to the violet-haired lad. "What's the Pokémon World Tournament?" Golen asked. "It's a tournament that was created by my father, Clay. Also known as the PWT. He created it to encourage development in Driftveil City and allowed trainers of other regions to enter to promote unity among the regions while at the same time allowing Gym Leaders to enter so they could battle against each other and prove who's the strongest." Turner answered.
"Oh I see, so what will people from other regions be allowed to enter this tournament?" Carly asked.
"No, it's more of a basic tournament. Well outside of the secret prize." Turner answered. "Secret prize? It sounds like fun." Vlad joyfully stated. "So will you be entering?" Turner asked the group. "Absolutely." "Of course!" Tom and Golen answered. "I guess I'll give it a shot too." Carly nervously stated.
"Alright, so it'll be all three of us battling it out to see who's the best!" Golen excitingly declared.
Narration: After winning his 5th Badge, it appears that a new challenge has presented itself to Golen and his friends. What awaits them next time?
"Hey Mr. Golen, someone is calling you." the Nurse declared as she entered the room. "Really?" Golen expressed in shock as he ran to the lobby alone. "Hello, who is it?" Golen asked as he began to talk to someone on the phone. "What? No way, I can't wait!" Golen happily declared.
Major Events (9/19/13): Golen battles Turner in his 5th Gym Battle and wins, without losing a single Pokémon, thus earning himself the Quake Badge.
