Cosette wasn't exactly sure of how long it had been, but to her it felt like years had passed by since Eponine and Enjolras last spoke to each other. She had discussed it with her mutual friends about it; they too felt that it had been too long.
People fought all the time, and everyone knew that Enjolras and Eponine argued on a regular basis, but they'd make up eventually, when they realised that they couldn't stand being away from each other.
But this time it was different, this time they didn't speak to each other, they didn't acknowledge each other, they were never even in the same room together. If one had spotted the other, they would turn and walk in the opposite direction. They both had also stopped venturing to their beloved café, not wanting to risk bumping into each other. The atmosphere in the café has changed drastically without their presence. Cosette, someone that didn't go to the café as often as the others, could feel it. She noticed how things were less lively and energetic, even though neither Eponine nor Enjolras were the kind of make a ruckus. The energy had died down without them.
No one was one hundred per cent sure about what was going on between Enjolras and Eponine. One day they were all over each other, and the next they would not speak of each other. There were theories and guesses as to what had gone down, but no one was sure. Even Cosette and Combeferre, the people that lived with and were closest to either Enjolras or Eponine had no clue as to what had happened. The just stopped going to each other's places, stopped talking to each other and both had started to flinch at just the mention of the other's name.
I started when Cosette had arrived home to find a silent Eponine. Cosette knew well enough not to bother Eponine when she got like this; sometimes her roommate just needed her space. Sometimes there was too much on her mind, or she was moody because her time of the month had arrived. Cosette didn't want to be scolded at, so she gave her roommate space. She thought that by the end of the week, Eponine would be back to her usual self. Maybe even faster now that Enjolras was always around to put a smile on her roommate's face.
But Enjolras didn't come around. And Eponine never got out of her silent phase. She just stayed like that, not talking to anyone, not looking at anyone. She focused on her studies and only spoke when spoken to. Only simple, one-line sentences came out of her mouth, and not even the smallest smile would peep through. She hid behind her large hoodies even though the sun was shining and the air was humid.
Weeks and weeks. That's how long it's been going on. Cosette didn't know the exact amount of days, or if it's been a month, but it's definitely been weeks and weeks. But that was it for her. As a roommate, Cosette felt that she had the responsibility of making sure that Eponine was doing fine. So she put on a brave face and readied herself for whatever stubborn moves Eponine was about to pull out of the bag. She was ready to help her friend.
"Eponine …" She leaned on the door, waiting for an answer. Eponine wasn't going anywhere. She was going to tell her everything, and Cosette was going to do anything to make sure her roommate did. "What's wrong?"
She doesn't look up from her books, "Nothing's wrong."
"Don't lie to me Eponine." The blonde snapped back. This grabbed Eponine's attention. Cosette never snapped at her, not in this way anyway. Eponine looked up and saw Cosette, a serious look had formed on her face.
"What are you talking about?" She tried to laugh, to make it seem like she really doesn't know what Cosette was talking about. And Cosette found that she was a pretty good actress, covering her true emotions in such a way. She was clever, but Cosette could see through her.
"Goddamn Enjolras is what I'm talking about!"
"Language Cosette!" She laughed again, and then turned back to her books. But Cosette could see that she had flinched at the mention of her former partner's name.
"You two were just fine weeks ago, kissing and whatnot. And now you won't even look at each other!"
Eponine waves her hand as if it were just a simple matter, something everyone could just push aside and discuss when there's nothing left to discuss. "We had our differences."
"Differences?!" They are both shocked at how much Cosette had raised her voice. "Differences?! But you guys basically argue every minute you're together!"
"So why is this so shocking to you?"
"Because this is the first time you have not talked to each other for a long period of time." Cosette waits for her roommate to respond, but nothing comes from her. "Last time, the longest was only a week. And that was hell."
"Well some topics are just bigger than others." The annoyance was starting to seep in her voice. She has had enough of this conversation.
The blonde girl takes a breath and calms herself down. "Eponine, please don't close yourself off from other people. I know something is wrong. We all know something is wrong. So please, just tell me."
Eponine doesn't make any movement to convey that she had taken in what her roommate had just asked her to do. She continued to 'study' and flip through her books.
Cosette huffs, "Fine. Okay then. I give up." She turns away and goes back to her side of their not so large room. If Eponine was going to ignore her, then there really was nothing left to do.
The room is silent for a few minutes. Only the noise of the occasional flipping of pages from Eponine and the irritated keyboard tapping from Cosette filled the air.
"I really love him." The silence breaks. But Eponine doesn't look up from her books when the words come out of her mouth. Instead, she looks much darker, much sadder. Her face hid behind a veil of hair, her hands were off the pages of the books and were now scrunched together in her lap. Cosette whipped around so quickly she, her chair almost bumped into the table. She waited for her roommate to say something else, but nothing came.
"What did you say?" Cosette says slowly, hoping that talking doesn't put her roommate off of saying what she feels.
"I really love him." There's sadness in her voice. As if all the hope she ever held onto had been sucked right out of her. "I do, I do. I really do. He's the best thing that has ever happened to me. I don't know why, I just …"
Cosette walks over to Eponine's bed and slowly sits down. When Eponine doesn't react drastically, she makes herself comfortable, puts a hand on her roommate's arm and ever so carefully says, "Just tell me what happened."
Eponine shakes her head, "I can't."
Cosette sighs once more and pulls back her hand, ready to give up once again. But Eponine reaches out and grabs her hand.
"I can't tell you the details, but what I can say is that we got into an argument." Cosette starts to listen once again, "A huge argument. And then he told me that he didn't care what I did anymore, and that he won't be coming back." Eponine laughs to herself, "And all he wanted to do was to make sure that I was safe and I had to be so fucking stupid and stubborn and I told him to leave."
Cosette stops herself from squealing with glee; it was not the time for that, no matter how happy she was that Eponine was opening up to her. Instead she tightens her grip on Eponine's hand.
"He loves you too you know."
Eponine lets go of their hands, which upsets Cosette slightly. She shakes her head and looks down once more. "No. And he probably never did. Even if he ever did, which I highly doubt, he definitely doesn't anymore. Not after that. He couldn't care less about me."
"Combeferre told me that he asked about you the other day."
Eponine looks up, genuinely surprised. She can't help but feel a little joyful, but she quickly reminds herself that he doesn't care about her. "You're lying."
Cosette shakes her head. "No, I'm not. He asked how you were." Cosette gives her roommate a loving smile, "But Combeferre couldn't answer him because he didn't know. No one knows how you are because you've been closing yourself off from the rest of the world. Even I, your roommate, don't know how you are most of the time."
Eponine smiles slightly, "Is that why you've been asking me to go out with you and Marius?"
Her roommate blushes and laughs, "You've been all alone, I thought you needed some time with people."
"I'm sorry I never accepted."
"It's fine, I don't know what's going on with you, so I assumed you just wanted space."
Cosette is taken aback when her roommate's arms are suddenly around her, pulling her into a very tight bear hug. Her instincts kick in a little too late, but luckily she hugs back before Eponine pulled away.
"He's never going to take me back." Eponine whispers, the two still in an embrace.
"I think he'd be more than happy for you to warm his bed once again." The blonde girl smirks. Cosette swears she could feel the heat radiating off Eponine's cheeks, as they pulled apart.
"I know what you're implying, and we never did that!"
Cosette is tempted to laugh, but instead she just smirks, "Right, of course not."
Tonight they were at Joly and Grantaire's place. Just another night with beer, each other's company and a game no one will end up watching. They just used it as an excuse to meet up if anyone were to ask them about it. Everyone had arrived, even Marius, who surprisingly didn't have his beloved Cosette attached to his hip. Although, he looked uneasy and kept looking down at his phone.
Rin-
Marius jumps at the sound and quickly answers the phone.
"Cosette! What's wrong, I thought you were going to meet me at Joly's?"
He could hear her smiling, "I'm sorry, I'm going to stay home today. Eponine's finally talking."
"Oh" He hadn't expected for that to happen. Any worries he had melted away. "Okay, that's good. I'll come by later then."
"Sounds good."
"Bye. I love you."
"I love you too."
He waits for her to hang up, which takes a few seconds, then puts the phone back into his pocket. He was glad that Eponine was finally opening up to someone; she had been far too quite for anyone's liking. Enjolras had been the same, but he was always broody and no one dared to ask him about it. At least not on their own.
"What's wrong?" Bahorel asks when he sees Marius had calmed down from panicking about his girlfriend's absence.
"Cosette's not coming, she's having some girl time with Eponine." Marius quickly realises that Enjolras was in the room, and they never dared to mention Eponine's name in his presense. He looks over to where their moody friend was sitting, he was listening to the conversation. Marius gulped and quickly turned away. He doesn't expect anyone to continue the topic, but Jehan seemed to pluck up the courage to speak his mind.
"Enjolras, why don't you speak to Eponine anymore?" People's heads snapped to tune into the conversation. It was a forbidden topic amongst them, but if one of them was brave enough to have their say, then all of them would start joining in.
Enjolras didn't make eye contact and quickly grunted, "It's none of your business."
"Yeah, but now she doesn't hang around you, she doesn't hang with us. And I for one, enjoy her company." No one had expected Jehan to be the one to bring up the topic. "She's like the sun peaking out of the clouds on a dark winter day." He smiled. That sounded more like him. "And she's a very honest person, I appreciate her opinion."
Then questions started coming at Enjolras from everyone. All their voices talking over each other, soon it was just noise, nothing could be fully understood.
"It's none of your business." Enjolras raised his voice just so he could be heard over everyone else. They all shut up.
But it was Grantaire's turn to be brave and speak out. "Enjolras. Remember that I wouldn't hesitate to hurt you if something were to happen to Eponine?"
The room stayed silent, Enjolras didn't reply.
"The only reason why I'm not fucking beating you right now, is because Eponine puts on a brave face everyday and as if nothing was wrong, telling people that she's fine when she's clearly not."
To that Enjolras scoffs, "Right. She'd know how to do that."
"What is that supposed to mean?"
"Nothing."
They're silent again, waiting for Enjolras to say something. Or for someone to be brave and have their say on the topic.
"So do you not like her anymore?" Joly asked.
Enjolras gulps, thinking the question through. They all patiently wait for the answer. They hope that Enjolras wouldn't leave it unanswered.
"I don't think I can stop loving her." He whispered, but just loud enough for everyone to hear.
"Well did you tell her you love her?" Courfeyrac asked.
"I told her I cared."
"Well there's a difference. You care for her, I care for her, we all fucking care for her. We all love her too, but if it's coming out of your mouth, it's a different context."
"Well it doesn't matter anymore."
"It does. She loves you, and you finally found someone you can love, but you're both being so fucking stubborn about it."
"You have to apologise to her." A voice said. Everyone nodded in agreement.
"It's her birthday next week." Grantaire offers.
"I know." Enjolras scowls. Out of all of them, he should be the one that remembered Eponine's birthday. He wishes that he could do something nice for her, but now he wasn't sure if that was going to happen. But all the other guys were pushing him to make it up with her; Enjolras wondered why they were so invested in his relationship with Eponine.
"You should make up to her."
"Why should I? She doesn't want me or need me around."
"Because you love her." Grantaire simply replies. "And you're less of a dick with her around."
