Ward had started to paint over the S.H.I.E.L.D logo on one of the vans, so that when they used it they wouldn't be stopped. Ward looked over to her with a smile on his face, which she returned with a grin. When he looked away however, it quickly died into a frown. It was so hard having to act like everything was alright, when she felt like she could hardly breathe. She pulled out the hard drive from her computer and walked over to the cupboards to look for any communications she could use.
"Fitz keeps the candy under his bunk" Ward said from right behind her, making her jump.
"What are you up to?" He asked.
"Just looking for the sat-phone to call the team, make sure everyone's all right" Kayla told him.
"I've got the phone. I just talked to Coulson a little while ago" Ward exclaimed.
"You did?" Kayla inquired.
"Yeah, sorry. Should have told you. They're okay, but the sooner we get to the location, decrypt that drive..." He trailed off.
"The sooner we can rendezvous with the team" Kayla finished for him.
"Exactly" He nodded.
"Guess Skye never thought this geo-locking hard drive thing would backfire" Kayla announced, walking away from him, back to her laptop.
"It hasn't backfired. The drive is supposed to be impossible to crack" He stated.
"Pretty specific coordinates, though. Why a random diner in L.A.?" Ward asked.
"It was already built into the encryption. Skye never changed it. But it's fitting. It's where she met Mike Peterson. I guess if she had never met him I wouldn't even be here right now" Kayla suggested.
"Well I'm glad you are He exclaimed.
"Same here...let's just hope everything goes to plan" Kayla told him.
"Oh, don't worry you'll be plenty safe" He said, approaching her.
She felt her heart speed up as he got closer, and had to stop herself from running away. His hand's then went behind her back and pulled out the gun that she had hid in her waistband earlier. She couldn't stop the goosebumps that erupted over her skin where his hand lay.
"This, however, is not the answer" He announced, walking away again.
"What's the matter? A girl can't defend herself?" Kayla questioned.
"In this situation, the last thing we can afford is to get pinched on a concealed-weapons charge" Ward stated.
"You're right. Again" She said, agreeing.
"Couldn't find any rounds anyway" She told him, awkwardly.
"Hey. We are gonna be okay. I promise, until this thing is over, I'm not gonna let you out of my sight" He smiled, as he brought her into a tight hug.
She used to feel safe when she was around him, but now she didn't know how she felt. How could someone who had killed Koenig so viciously, smile at her like that?
The others had found Koenig's body and Simmons had assessed that it was Ward who had killed him. Fitz had immediately rejected the idea, becoming angry. While Skye, had instantly tried to find the Bus, desperate to find her friend.
"I can't remember the last time I sat in a restaurant" Kayla announced, when after they had parked the van.
"I know. It's been all tubes, tunnels, and plane food" Ward sighed.
"Maybe I will get cake for dessert" She suggested.
"Dessert? I was hoping we'd be done by the time I finished coffee" Ward admitted.
"No can do. It would take Skye a long time to decrypt this hard drive, and even longer for me" She explained.
"You put yourself down a lot, you know" He stated.
"No, I don't" She retorted.
"You're just as good hacker as Skye is" He told her.
"Glad you have so much faith in me" She exclaimed, as he opened the door for her.
"You're staring again" Kayla announced.
"I'm not allowed to stare at my girlfriend?" He questioned.
"You're being impatient" Kayla retorted.
"That's not why I'm staring" Ward stated.
The truth was he knew he might never see Kayla again, and was trying to memorize her face, but he couldn't tell her that.
"Maybe you should duck outside. Try again on the sat-phone just to make sure" Kayla suggested.
"No. We stick together and we stick to the plan. The sooner you decrypt this hard drive..." Ward trailed off.
"The sooner we get to them. I heard you twice the first time" Kayla told him, she then looked down at her laptop and saw that the hack had stopped because the location was invalid.
She gulped and immediately closed the window, not wanting Ward to see.
"Are you all right? You look nervous" He said, placing his hand on top of hers.
Kayla instantly shrugged him off, which made Ward frown.
"I'm not" She shrugged.
"You're staying unnaturally still to keep from fidgeting, maintaining eye contact to give the impression of confidence. What's wrong?" He inquired.
"I'm just worried someone might spot us, you know. I don't really want to spend the night in jail" She exclaimed.
"Relax. You're doing great" Ward smiled at her.
"Thanks" She said, trying to smile back, but she knew it came out as more of a grimace.
"How much longer?" Ward asked, with a sigh.
"Half-hour" Kayla stated, she had tipped of the police of their location a while ago, and Ward was beginning to get suspicious.
"You said that a half an hour ago" Ward retorted.
"Weren't you the one who told me to relax?" Kayla suggested.
"Those cops over there keep looking at us" Ward told her.
"They're just checking out the waitress. They don't know you're pretending to be someone you're not" Kayla exclaimed.
"Yeah, all right" Ward sighed.
"You know we never really talked about Garrett" She announced.
"Garrett? What about him?" Ward questioned.
"Well you must be feeling pretty bad right now. Garrett had been lying to you for years. I don't know how he did it" Kayla explained, getting no response from Ward who was still looking at the police in the corner.
"Think about all that time he spent as your S.O…getting to know you, being your mentor...only to betray you like that. You must have hated him" Kayla went on.
"It was, uh, difficult to accept. But thankfully, that's over" Ward replied.
"Because you took care of him. How did that feel?" Kayla stated.
"Can we not discuss this right now?" Ward asked.
"If you had one more moment before you shot him in the back of the head so heroically, if he was sitting right here and you could say anything you want, what would you say?" Kayla inquired.
"Kayla-" Ward started, but was quickly cut off.
"Would you say he's disgusting? Would you tell him he's a disgusting, backstabbing traitor? That you hate him?...Or to rot in hell?" Kayla said, not able to keep the venom out of her voice.
"What are you doing?" Ward asked.
"I know" Kayla told him.
"…They're starting to clear people out. We should go" Ward suggested, refusing to believe that Kayla knew about him.
"Did you not here me?" Kayla retorted, unable to believe his denial.
"Kayla, we've been made. Come on" Ward insisted.
"No…I tipped them off" Kayla explained, turning her laptop so he could see she had contacted the police.
"Hail Hydra" She spat out.
Author's Notes: I hope you all enjoyed this chapter! So Ward's secret is now completely out, and everything just gets a hundred times more complicated from there. As someone has just pointed out to me, Kayla acts like Skye a lot in the latest chapters but its just because I don't feel like there is really any other way to act. But trust me, Kayla's really going to start coming into her own soon, especially in season 2. Spoilers for 3x04: Okay, so I've got this crazy theory that Ward is lash...what do you guys think? Oh and I pretty much hate Hunter. Please leave a review:)
