Hey everyone, thank you all for much for the feedback! I think this story will be wrapping up soon but don't worry there will be the next installment. I am sorry about the delay, I know it's been like a month. School was insane and my season had started and then we went away so I had no time to update. So I don't actually know when Eddie's birthday is so I'm making it up!
It was the first week of March and Eddie's birthday was quickly approaching. Eddie told Jamie that she didn't want anything, but he knew better. Last year he had treated her to lunch and dinner and she had done the same for him and they got each other little gag gifts. He kept asking her what she wanted but she kept saying nothing so he asked Nicky for help. She was coming over after school and they were gonna go shopping.
Eddie was at work and Jamie was doing work around the apartment. He still studied the law and since he had started dating Eddie, he asked Jack if he could consult on non-criminal cases for some extra income. Jamie knew that eventually he would propose and two cop salaries weren't going to get them very far. Jack was happy to have him consult and Jamie liked doing it.
He was sitting at the kitchen table when he heard a knock on the door. He looked at his watch and knew that it couldn't be Nicky since she was still in class. He walked over to the door and checked the peep hole. He was surprised to see Nicky standing there.
"Nic?" Jamie asked opening the door.
"Before you yell at me, I had last period study hall so I wasn't missing anything"
"Hi to you too. How did you get out of study hall. From what I remember about Catholic School they didn't let you out very easily" Jamie said laughing.
"It's a guy teacher so I lied and I just told him I had cramps and wanted to go home"
"Why do I even ask?" Jamie asked rolling his eyes.
"I don't know why you haven't learned yet"
"So why did you come early?" Jamie asked knowing there was more to Nicky cutting class that just coming to see him.
"I told you I just had study hall" Nicky said putting her bags down.
"Nic, it's not like you to cut school" Jamie said
"I had reasons" Nicky said
"We didn't have plans till you were done school, I'm not taking the fall for you cutting with your mom" Jamie said
"I know" Nicky said in an agitated voice.
Jamie led Nicky over to the couch and sat her down.
"Nic what's wrong? Is everything ok in school? Did someone hurt you?" Jamie asked starting to worry.
"Mike broke up with me" Nicky said, her voice wavering.
"Aww Nic I'm sorry. Come here" Jamie said moving closer to her to put his arms around her.
Nicky moved inter her uncle's arms and buried her head into his shoulder and started to cry. Jamie held her tight and rubbed his hand up and down her back.
"What happened?" Jamie said giving her a kiss her on the head.
Nicky pulled her head off her shoulder and took off her school tie.
"He's in study hall too and someone brought up that charity event that I took Ben to and he got all mad and one of the other guys reminded him that he didn't want to go. Then he went off on me saying that I am to close with my family and that I never have time for him" Nicky said fresh tears forming.
Jamie used the back of his hand to wipe her tears away.
"You didn't need him anyway"
"Can you not act like my dad for once and act like my older brother like you use to do when I was little"
"Nicky" Jamie said firmly.
"I'm serious, don't give me the you're better than him, he doesn't deserve you crap" Nicky said.
Jamie just nodded and got up off the sofa.
"You want me to leave?" Nicky asked surprised.
Jamie just shook his head and walked into the kitchen and opened the freezer and grabbed the carton of ice cream and two spoons. He walked back over and handed it to Nicky.
"You owe Eddie ice cream" Jamie said with a smile.
Jamie said back down next to Nicky and took a spoonful of ice cream.
"Wanna talk about it?" Jamie asked.
"I understand I've been busy but he didn't have to be so mean and break up with me"
"He sucks, let me go shoot him for you" Jamie said mocking her.
"Uncle Jamie" She groaned.
"I'm trying to make you feel better kid" Jamie said
Nicky put the ice cream down on the coffee table and went back into Jamie's arms and started to cry.
"Shh, it's ok. And I mean it Nicky, if he doesn't realize how great you are then he doesn't deserve you. You're turning into a beautiful, talented, caring young women and if he doesn't want to work around your busy life than it's his loss" Jamie said
"Thanks Uncle Jamie" Nicky said sniffling
"You will find the right guy in the right amount of time" Jamie said.
"I don't know why he was being so impatient"
"Do you guys really need to hang out during the week. You see each other in school everyday and you can hang out of Friday's and Saturdays. It seems to me like he was becoming to controlling. The one day after practice you said you were too tired and he got mad that you were coming over here and not going out with him. I kept my mouth shut but he shouldn't tell you when and where you can do things" Jamie said
"He would just get so mad if I couldn't do anything. It was Rosie's birthday and we all went out after the game and he got mad because Saturday night is suppose to be 'our night'. He also yelled at me saying he couldn't be with someone who didn't want to take the next step in the relationship"
"You mean?" Jamie asked hoping he wouldn't have to finish that thought.
"Yea, I told him no but then he went on about me not liking him. It was a huge fight when he broke me up but I don't know how I feel about it" Nicky said.
"He didn't" Jamie said before Nicky cut him off.
"No we didn't have sex, I told him I wasn't ready and he was like well why not and went on and on. He wanted to do it tonight and I told him that I was coming over here and he was like fine that's it. You don't love me your a terrible person, you're such a bitch. No one will love you I can't believe that I wasted the last few months with you, you're not even going far away to school" Nicky said crying again.
Jamie just hugged her tightly and rubbed soothing circles on her back.
"I stand by it kiddo, he doesn't deserve you. You're better than him and that petty nonsense. You're better off with out him and he will realize that it's his loss"
"Why are all guys jackasses?"
"I take offense to that" Jamie said giving her a smile
"Except you" Nicky said smiling
"Not everyone can be as amazing as me" Jamie said
"Thanks Uncle Jamie" Nicky said still in his arms.
"Did he break up with you in study hall?" Jamie asked.
"Yea, I just grabbed my stuff and told the teacher I wasn't feeling well. And then I kept it together until I got here" Nicky said.
"I'm sorry kiddo. I promise you that with time it will get better." Jamie said.
"I just don't know what his problem was" Nicky said.
"His problem was that you are too independent and too sure of yourself for him. Guys like him what to control the women they date, you didn't want to be controlled and you made that clear. You know what you want and you are sure of yourself and he couldn't deal with that. It's better you are done with him now before he tries to take to much control" Jamie said
"How do you always know what to say?" Nicky asked wiping a few tears away.
"I'm just that good" Jamie said with a cheesy smile.
"Thanks" Nicky said hugging Jamie again.
He hugged her back and kissed the top of her head.
"Breakups are never easy, but it happened for a reason. I remember after Sydney and I broke up. I was a mess, I have no idea what to do with myself or my life. I didn't think I would ever love someone again. Turns out I did. Sydney was filling my love for Joe, I just love Eddie and I couldn't imagine my life with out her. Sadly, heartbreak is the sucky part of life, but you will find the person that is right for you. May not be today and may not be tomorrow. It will happen, I promise" Jamie said.
"Boys are stupid" Nicky said laughing.
"There's my girl" Jamie said laughing.
They cleaned up the kitchen and Nicky went to change out of her uniform.
"You still up for birthday shopping?" Jamie asked.
"Shopping cures everything" Nicky said grabbing her purse.
"Of course it does" Jamie said rolling his eyes.
"So what are your ideas?" Nicky asked.
"I don't know, that's why I brought you along" Jamie said.
"Well I don't know. I'm still tapped out from Christmas" Nicky said getting into Jamie's car. She was surprised but he actually let her drive.
"Well think. She said she didn't want anything and she threatened my life if I got her more jewelry and I told her only over my dead body would I buy her more clothes" Jamie said
"Why did she threaten your life?"
"Because we only make cops salaries and she told me I don't need to keep buying her expensive stuff for her to like me"
"That's sweet" Nicky said smiling.
"Well let's think than" Nicky said.
"Ok" Jamie said
"What are some of her favorite things?" Nicky asked Jamie as they were walking around.
"Besides me?" Jamie asked cheekily
"Yes" Nicky said.
"She likes yoga, and shopping. She wants me to teach her how to box" Jamie said
"SO do something with that"
"Don't girls take offense to those kinds of presents?" Jamie asked not totally convinced
"I don't think Eddie would" Nicky said.
"She did say that her mat was getting worn out" Jamie said.
"well then let's start at the yoga store" Nicky said.
Jamie bought her a light green mat with flowers and he got himself a dark blue mat. He also got her the non slip yoga strips for her feet. He figured he would surprise her and go with her one day. Next they went to the sporting goods store and he bought her some boxing gloves. He finished her birthday shopping by getting her a massage time. He always rubbed her shoulders and feet but thought it would be good to surprise her. She had her first undercover stint this week and he knew that she had been stressed. She kicked ass but it could have turned out very differently.
"Thanks for helping me Nicky" Jamie said getting into the car. He decided that he would drive this time.
"Anytime, I don't want you to mess anything up with Eddie" Nicky said.
"Funny, I do well on my own thank you very much" Jamie said.
They gabbed pizza and more ice cream and headed back to the apartment.
Jamie hid Eddie's presents just in time for her to come in.
"Hey babe" Eddie said kissing Jamie as she walked in.
"Hey how was tour?" Jamie asked kissing her back.
"Ok, nothing to crazy" Eddie said taking off her jacket.
"That's always good" Jamie said.
They sat down and started to eat. They were almost done when Eddie asked how school had went for Nicky.
"Mike broke up with me" Nicky said trying to fight back her tears.
"Oh sweetheart" Eddie said. She got up and enveloped her into a hug.
Nicky shed a few more tears and Eddie held her tightly.
Jamie loved how comfortable his family was with Eddie and he loved how Eddie loved his family like he did.
He got up and got Nicky some water.
Together the three of them finished off two pints of ice cream and together they drove her back to Erins.
"So how was your day lambchop?" Eddie asked.
"It was ok, I told Nicky that Mike wasn't good enough for her and that she could do better"
"I love you even more when you take care of your nieces and nephews. It's really sexy" Eddie said with a smile.
Jamie didn't say anything he just laughed and found her hand.
They went home and got ready for bed, they were laying there when Jamie pulled Eddie close to him.
"Babe" Jamie said.
"You ok?" Eddie asked rolling over to face Jamie.
"I wanted to ask you something"
"OK" Eddie said
"How would you feel about inviting your mom for Sunday dinner for your birthday"
Eddie didn't say anything but her face went pale.
"My dad and Gramps want to meet her. It's your birthday dinner so I thought you might want her there" Jamie said.
"Are you sure?" Eddie asked.
"My family has think skin, they can take what she says. But I thought you said she was becoming more understanding"
"She is, but isn't"
"Don't worry everything will be fine" Jamie said.
"I love you, your a great man Jamie Reagan" Eddie said hugging Jamie.
"Happy early Birthday Eddie" Jamie said kissing her.
Well there it is! I've been writing this chapter for a while and I just wanted to post it. The next chapter will be about Eddie undercover and her birthday!
