March 3rd
There were National Days Of, and then there were National Days Of…
First it was Cas sitting at one end of the map table, gazing intently at a book that was propped up against some other books at the far other end of the map table, celebrating, as he announced happily to Dean, "'National Read Across America Day'," gesturing at the map of America that lay between him and his book.
Then it was Charlie in the kitchen with a soup pot in one hand and a bottle of wine in the other and her perky intention to have them all celebrate "National Mulled Wine Day!" and Dean walked out again without getting his breakfast.
Kevin was in the library, unannoyingly busy with research and a double decker sandwich in honor of "National Cold Cuts Day", lovingly made by Mrs. Tran, who was sitting nearby in one of the club chairs, reading a book and humming the National Anthem, in honor of, unsurprisingly, "National Anthem Day."
Even Crowley was in on the day, when Dean went in there looking for Sam.
"Today is 'What if Cats and Dogs Had Opposable Thumbs Day'." Crowley offered, hopefully. "Want to see what that's like? Hmm? I can make it happen. Won't even charge you for it. What do you say? Hmm?"
Dean shook his head and took his search for his little brother farther afield.
He found Sam, finally, out in the garage, with the Impala. He was half hidden in the back seat, busy with a portable car vac if the sound of a small, tinny motor was anything to go by.
"Hey, what're you doing out here?" Sam asked, straightening up and shutting off the car vac.
"Too crazy inside. Too many National Days Of. What're you up to?"
Sam shrugged.
"Just – you know – getting the last of that box of donut holes that dumped in the back seat the other day."
"Oh – great. Thanks. I was gonna get that this afternoon."
Sam shrugged again.
"So, what're you doing now?" He asked Dean. "Y'have breakfast yet? Or you wanna go get some breakfast? You want me to go get you something?"
At first Dean was confused, and then he got worried.
"Sam? Something happen? Something you need to tell me?"
"No. Why?"
"Why all the sudden concern, then?"
Sam hesitated, then finally admitted.
"It's 'National I Want You to be Happy Day'."
Expecting to hear confessions of scratches, dings, blood stains or dog hair in the car, it took Dean a few long seconds to realize what Sam had told him. He pulled the key out of his back pocket.
"Breakfast's on me, wherever you want. Let's go."
