That night, both Lyon and Gray can't sleep. They are still excited about their last game, and they are thrilled to face Blue Pegasus one more time.
Which reminds Lyon of something.
"Gray." Lyon calls his twin.
"What?"
"We're facing Blue Pegasus again this year."
"I'm aware."
"Means that she will come to see the final."
"...I know."
Lyon closes his eyes and sighs. "Have you thought about what I have said three months ago? About your doubts in your relationship?"
"Go away, Lyon." Gray replies, annoyed.
Lyon really wants to sit up to face his twin, but his back has been glued to his bed. "I'm serious. I can see Lucy is trying to chase her doubts away. Though it still shows that she somewhat still has feelings for taichou."
"Shut up."
"What about you? What about your doubts?" Lyon pesters.
"Shut up and go away, Lyon. I. Don't. Have. Any. Doubts." Gray emphasizes.
Lyon snorts. "I'm your twin, Gray. I know better."
Gray growls. "Leave me alone. I've told you that she's out of my life for good. And about Lucy, I'm aware that she still feels guilty for putting taichou into this situation. And I'm aware that she is still struggling to fight the feeling. But it doesn't matter to me. Lucy chose me."
"Which is the weirdest thing ever in my opinion," Lyon adds. "she made the decision as fast as a lightning!"
"Are you a Sherlock Holmes or what?" Gray asks sarcastically.
"Very funny." Lyon retorts. "I'm being serious here!"
"What? You think I'm not?" Gray asks back. "Damn it, Lyon! It's my relationship that is being questioned here!"
"But it's still strange to me!" Lyon is being stubborn.
"Who cares about how fast Lucy made the decision?" Gray growls. "She doesn't cheat on me, she stays by my side, she doesn't leave me, and damn it Lyon, WE HAVE BEEN TOGETHER FOR THREE MONTHS ALREADY."
"Have you never found it strange?" Lyon pesters.
"Nope." Gray replies immediately. "I'm too happy to even give a damn about it."
"Gray, you're hurting yourselves this way," Lyon sighs loudly. "why don't you solve your doubts first?"
"DAMN IT LYON, FOR THE GODS-KNOW-HOW-MANY-TIME-ALREADY, I. DON'T. HAVE. ANY. DOUBTS. NOT EVEN THE SLIGHTEST." Gray emphasizes every words.
"GRAY! STOP DENYING IT!" Now Lyon snaps and forcefully tears his back away from his bed.
Gray follows. "I'M NOT DENYING ANYTHING!"
"I REMEMBER THOSE TEARS YOU HAVE SHED, GRAY! I REMEMBER THOSE SADNESS IN YOUR EYES, THE UNBEARABLE PAIN IN YOUR HEART! I REMEMBER HOW LIFELESS YOU ARE FOR YEARS!"
Gray snaps. "THAT'S SIX YEARS AGO!"
"AND IT TOOK YOU HOW MANY YEARS TO FORGET? FOUR YEARS, RIGHT?!"
"IT'S MORE THAN ENOUGH TO MOVE ON! YOU KNOW I LOVE LUCY!"
"GRAY, I REMEMBER YOU TOLD ME THAT 'IT'S BETTER TO LOVE SOMEONE WHO HAS ALWAYS BEEN WITH YOU, RATHER TO LOVE SOMEONE WHO IS BY YOUR SIDE, BUT THEN LEAVES YOU BEHIND'! AND I REMEMBER YOU SAID THAT 'IT'S BETTER TO LOVE LUCY RATHER THAN LOVE SOMEBODY ELSE'! YOU FELL IN LOVE WITH LUCY BECAUSE YOU THINK IT'S BETTER, RIGHT?!"
"DAMN IT, LYON, I SAID THAT BECAUSE I WAS BROKEN HEARTED BACK THEN! AND LUCY'S THE ONLY ONE WHO STAYS BY MY SIDE!"
Lyon glares at Gray in disbelieve. "WHAT? GRAY, YOU TOLD ME BACK THEN THAT LUCY REMINDS YOU A LOT OF—"
"SHE'S NOT!" Gray cuts and glares back at Lyon angrily. He then sighs loudly and ruffles his hair in frustration. "OKAY, I DID!" he yells at Lyon. "I DID SAY ALL OF THOSE THINGS, AND I'M AWARE THAT AT FIRST, I CHOSE LUCY BECAUSE SHE REMINDS ME OF HER! BUT IT'S NOT LIKE THAT, ANYMORE!"
"GRAY—"
"WILL YOU TWO SHUT UP?!" Ultear Milkovich slams the twin room's door open and glares angrily.
Lyon and Gray gulp down nervously, terrified of their older sister's furious face. They didn't even realize that they has been shouting at each other, until their scary sister comes in.
Uh-oh.
"Gray, what's wrong with your head? You have a nasty bump." Lucy asks confusedly.
Since today is Saturday, Lucy decides to play at Gray's house. How lucky she is since Gray is alone in his house. Or maybe Gray has sent everybody away so he can enjoy his time alone with Lucy. Right now, Gray is lying while his head is on top of Lucy's head. The two are just enjoying the cold weather while Lucy runs his finger through Gray's hair.
And finds the rather big bump.
"Ul-nee hit me yesterday." Gray answers.
"What? Why?" Lucy asks.
"Cause I'm being noisy with Lyon." Gray answers.
"What did you do with him anyway?" Lucy asks again while rubbing Gray's bump softly. "Ul-nee really has some nasty punch."
"Lucy, can I ask you something?" Gray asks.
"Sure. What is it?"
"Why did you decide to be my girlfriend that fast?" Gray asks. Fine, he'll admit it! Now that Lyon mentioned it again, Gray can't help but to feel a little bit curious.
"What?"
"You didn't give me the answer immediately that morning." Gray says. "But then you said yes after school. What changed your opinion?"
Lucy's body stiffens a bit as she has never thought that Gray will ask her something like that. But then she relaxes as she answers him. "Levy-chan told me, that you can't possibly fall in love with two different people at the same time. No matter what, there has got to be something in either one that attracts you more."
"And.. what part of me that attracts you more?" Gray asks.
"Your constant presence, Gray." Lucy answers. "You have always been by my side for 13 years. When I gave more thought about it, I realized that I can fall in love with you, because you've always been with me."
"..That's all?"
Lucy chuckles. "What else? Do you expect me to say I chose you because you're more handsome than Natsu? No way."
Gray sits up and looks at Lucy accusingly. "And why not?"
Lucy chuckles again. "Obviously Gray, you two are handsome, okay? I can't choose either of you from your looks only."
Gray teasingly flicks at Lucy's forehead and he earns a protest from the girl. "Which reminds me Lucy, how come you have feelings for Natsu-taichou?"
At this, Lucy's eyes dims and she looks outside. "I don't know." she mumbles. "I honestly don't know. I mean, I'm feeling comfortable around him. Like I've known him for a long time. Which is kinda true anyway, since he was my childhood friend."
"What?" Gray chokes.
Lucy lets out a small smile. "Before I met you Gray, I had spent a year with Natsu. We played together a lot, and we spent every day being together. That's why I'm feeling comfortable around him."
"Oh? You have never told me about this." Gray raises an eyebrow.
"To be honest, I don't remember about it either, though Natsu remembers it. I got dreams about the memories with him, and that's how I knew. And when he kissed me back then.." Lucy trails off. "I could feel his love for me, and it made my heart beat so fast. I.. I don't know, my feelings are all jumbled up."
Gray stays silent, feeling a pain in his heart upon hearing Lucy's words.
"Actually Gray, I once thought to be Natsu's," Lucy decides to be honest. She wants to tell Gray her doubts. She wish by doing it, her doubts will stop. "but when I thought of hurting you, it pained my heart a lot. Then I wondered if I became yours.. The thought pained me too, as I could imagine how hurt Natsu would be.. But for some reasons, the pain isn't as bad as the pain I felt for you.."
Gray doesn't comment.
"So I thought.. I thought that maybe.. maybe, I can grow to love you more." Lucy sighs.
"Maybe?" Gray asks softly, nearly whispers.
Lucy whips her head to face Gray. She grabs Gray's arms and locks her chocolate eyes to Gray's own eyes. "Gray, no matter how logical my reasons are, I know that my decision is a haste. And I know I'm being a jerk right now, Gray. I know I still harbor some feelings for Natsu, as I still feels guilty for hurting him.. And I feels lonely without his smile at me.. But Gray, I.. I.." Lucy stutters and takes a deep breath. "I want to grow to love you more. That's why I said yes. That's why I agreed. It's the only way for me to.."
"I understand Lucy." Gray smiles at Lucy. "I'm aware of that. I know you still have doubts about us, and I know you are trying to stop it. I know."
"Y—you know?" Lucy chokes.
Gray nods chastely. "I can see it, Lucy. I'm not blind, you know."
Lucy feels a pang of guilt inside her heart. Gray looks at her and she can't bring herself to look back at him. She lets her hands down and looks elsewhere. Silence falls between the two, until Gray breaks it.
"But I can't put the blame on you totally." Gray says and hugs his girlfriend. He puts his cheek on Lucy's head and Lucy's eyes become teary. "I know it's hard to choose between two people, and I'm just glad you chose me."
Tears are rolling down from Lucy's eyes as she cries in Gray's hug. She sobs in Gray's shoulder, and Gray tightens his hug.
They stay that way for a while, and Gray takes the moment to consider whether to tell Lucy or not. It's not his doubt, but he thinks that Lucy deserves to know. She is his girlfriend, and he needs to be honest with her.
"Lucy." Gray calls and Lucy tears herself away a bit.
Gray looks down at her and using his thumbs slowly wiping her tears off from her face. He smiles at her. "I need to tell you something."
Lucy looks at him in question. Gray smiles again. "The reason why I fell in love with you."
